“Blood Relatives” is a movie with a lot of heart. And blood. Lots and lots of blood, because this is the story of a pair of vampires. But it’s also a father-daughter bonding flick; a road trip movie; and a surprisingly non-stop delivery system for Yiddish words. Written, directed by, and starring Noah Segan, “Blood Relatives” is clearly a passion project for the actor (who you probably primarily know from his frequent collaborations with Rian Johnson), and as is often the case with passion projects for actors-turned-filmmakers, it’s a little clumsy. There are scenes that feel awkwardly long, in dire need of some trimming — a mid-movie sequence shot day-for-night goes on seemingly forever and robs the movie of serious momentum, for instance.
And yet, “Blood Relatives” is so unapologetically warm — especially for a vampire flick — that it’s hard not to be charmed by it all. You’ll notice the clunky bits that need some fixing. But you’ll also likely be taken with the undead drama of it all. Segan is Francis, a guy who looks young but is actually old. Very old. He’s a vampire who lived through World War II, and he’s not originally from America, as he’s prone to throwing out Yiddish words whenever he can (this is a running bit that sometimes works and garners big laughs, and sometimes falls flat; so it goes).
Francis lives a nomadic lifestyle, driving through the countryside in his 1969 Barracuda Fastback and wearing an outfit that, as one character aptly points out, is akin to someone dressing like the Fonz for Halloween. When the sun comes up, Francis either checks into motels or covers his car in a tarp to hide from the sun. It’s not clear if he enjoys this lifestyle, but it’s all he has, and it’s seemingly all he’s known for decades. And then everything changes when teenager Jane (Akasha Villalobos) tracks him down and tells him she’s his daughter.

Part of the fun of “Blood Relatives” is how Segan plays around with established vampire mythology. Yes, vampires are undead; yes, they drink blood (of humans and sometimes animals, but animals don’t taste as good); and yes, they can be killed by sunlight. But Francis also loves to chug bottles of booze — something Count Dracula, with his aversion to spirits, would gag at. And, even though he’s technically dead, Francis can also sire a child. Years ago he rolled into a town and got a one-night stand pregnant. Now, that woman is dead, and Jane, her daughter, has arrived to reveal to Francis she’s his long-lost child. And because her dad is a vampire, she’s a half-vampire herself. She has a thirst for blood, has superhuman strength, and can sprout fangs. But she’s also technically alive, ages naturally, and can move about during the day without bursting into flames.
Because Jane has no one, she wants to stay with Francis. Francis, as you’d imagine, thinks this is a terrible idea. But father and daughter reluctantly hit the road together, and it’s not going to be an easy journey. Jane is consistently angry in that sulky teen sort of way, and that’s part of the film’s problems. While Villalobos sells the angst of the character, she’s stuck with the type of smarmy, sardonic, rat-a-tat dialogue that never, ever sounds right coming out of the mouth of a kid. Kids don’t talk like this — screenwriters do. And as such, I had trouble getting used to Jane as a character. You could argue that her nature is all an act; she’s a hurt, lonely kid and she’s lashing out and trying to sound wiser beyond her years. But I don’t quite buy that, and I don’t buy her dialogue.
But I did buy the conflicts that arise between father and daughter, two characters who are both very alike and very different. And I bought into the way these two lonely people ultimately realize they need each other, because each other is all they’ve got. There’s something charming about the way Francis learns to change in order to raise his daughter. Even though he’s already an old man, he’s finally being forced to grow up, something that doesn’t come easy to anyone — even vampires. However, there are darker, somewhat unspoken things lurking in the background — the idea that eventually, Jane will get older and older while Francis stays the same. That’s bleak and disturbing — I was reminded of “Let the Right One In,” which had similar tragic vampire/human dynamics — but “Blood Relatives” plays them for laughs. But perhaps that’s just the reality of the situation — we find humor in the macabre all the time. We have to laugh, or else we’ll cry. “Blood Relatives” gets that, and that’s part of what makes the film so affable, even if it does trip over its own Dracula cape from time to time.

The skeletal remains of a female "vampire" were found in a 17th-century Polish graveyard — with a sickle across her neck to prevent her rising from the dead.
Professor Dariusz Poliński from Nicholas Copernicus University headed the archaeological dig that led to the discovery of the remains, which were found wearing a silk cap and with a protruding front tooth, the Daily Mail reported Friday.

"The sickle was not laid flat but placed on the neck in such a way that if the deceased had tried to get up… the head would have been cut off or injured," Poliński told the Daily Mail.
In the 11th century, citizens of Eastern Europe reported fears of vampires and began treating their dead with anti-vampire rituals, according to Smithsonian magazine, believing that "some people who died would claw their way out of the grave as blood-sucking monsters that terrorized the living."
By the 17th century, Science Alert reported such burial practices "became common across Poland in response to a reported outbreak of vampires."

"Other ways to protect against the return of the dead include cutting off the head or legs, placing the deceased face down to bite into the ground, burning them, and smashing them with a stone," Poliński told the New York Post.
Though other common anti-vampire burial methods included a metal rod hammered through the skeleton, the remains in Poland were found with the sickle across the neck and a padlocked toe to restrain her.
The padlocked big toe attached to the skeleton's left foot, Poliński told the Daily Mail, likely symbolized "the closing of a stage and the impossibility of returning."
Poliński did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Where to watch: Netflix
Much like The Vampire Diaries, Shadowhunters was also based on a much-loved young adult series of books.
The supernatural show is all about Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) who finds out she is actually an angelic warrior called a shadowhunter.
She is dragged into a world of demons, fairies and werewolves, all while navigating her growing feelings for Jace Wayland (Dominic Sherwood).
The show ran for three seasons on Freeform but won many more viewers when it was released on Netflix.
The Vampire Diaries is available to watch on Netflix now.

One of The CW’s greatest love stories is being retold in song. The Feb. 4 episode of Legacies (9/8c) stages the long-awaited production of Salvatore: The Musical, with current students embodying Vampire Diaries favorites like Damon, Stefan, Elena and Caroline.
A new batch of photos finds Josie donning Elena’s signature black hair, leather jacket and Converse sneakers as she recreates the doppelganger’s first meeting with Stefan (played here by Jed) in the cemetery. Damon, meanwhile, will be played by Kaleb, while Lizzie appears to be portraying none other than Caroline Forbes.
Though this is certainly the most direct reference to the franchise’s original series, Legacies has always featured nods to both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Several characters from those shows — including Matt Donovan, Jeremy Gilbert, Freya Mikaelson and even Kai Parker — have popped up during the CW spinoff’s first two seasons.
Legacies recently returned for its third season, picking up immediately where its sophomore outing left off, with Hope and Landon in various states of unconsciousness. Both halves of the show’s it couple were vertical by the end of the hour, but with The Necromancer continuing to plot against them, they’re hardly out of the woods just yet.

Nearly 20 years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer last aired, TVLine is raising the cult-classic series from the dead for a reevaluation of sorts. We’re not questioning whether it was as excellent as we remember — we’ve rewatched it often enough to know that it was. But we are wondering whether the characters that we liked the best… actually were the best.
To that end, we’ve singled out the 25 fictional individuals — OK, and a grouping here and there — that we still think put the “super” in the supernatural. Among them are — well, duh — the title character, a heroine for the ages; more than one version of not only her closest friend but her boyfriend; an airhead who all these years later is still on our minds; and a vamp whose nickname really shouldn’t have been William the Bloody but William the Bloody Awesome.
No doubt, you will have… um, let’s call them feelings about the characters who have been excluded from this list. There are probably even at least a couple of you who will cry foul over the absence of a certain ultra-annoying Key, aka the Cousin Oliver of the Buffyverse. You may render your complaints to your hearts’ content in the comments section below.
But first, you should check out how we’ve ranked our Top 25 by clicking on the photo gallery above (or going here for direct access). Then and only then should you move on to the comments and reveal whether you think our countdown bites… or sucks. Ready… set… click.

AMC Networks announced on Wednesday that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Anne Rice’s major literary works, The Vampire Chronicles Series and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches Series, to develop for its TV networks and streaming services under the AMC Studios umbrella.
Anne Rice and her son Christopher Rice will serve as executive producers on all series and films born of the deal, which specifically encompasses The Vampire Chronicles’ Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, Memnoch The Devil, The Vampire Armand, Pandora, Vittorio the Vampire, Blood and Gold, Prince Lestat, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis and Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat … The Lives Of The Mayfair Witches’ The Witching Hour, Lasher and Taltos… and the crossover novels Merrick, Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle.
It was first announced back in 2016 that Rice was planning a small-screen adaptation of The Vampire Chronicles Series. In July 2018, when The Vampire Chronicles was in development at Hulu, Rice held out hopes for “a Game of Thrones-style, faithful rendering of this material.”
Commenting on the new AMC deal, Rice said, “It’s always been my dream to see the worlds of my two biggest series united under a single roof so that filmmakers could explore the expansive and interconnected universe of my vampires and witches. That dream is now a reality, and the result is one of the most significant and thrilling deals of my long career.”

Luke Fox comes bearing a bittersweet gift — and also hopefully a distraction — in this exclusive sneak peek from this week’s episode of The CW’s Batwoman.
In the clip above, Luke (played by Camrus Johnson) surprises Kate (Ruby Rose) with something to remember Beth by, in the wake of Alice’s kinder doppelganger being shot dead by an unknown assailant (that would be Mouse’s pop aka Dr. Campbell).
Luke then offers Gotham’s caped crusader a work-related distraction, in the form of a blood-sucking baddie — dubbed “Nocturna,” and played by Vampire Diaries vet Kayla Ewell. What is Kate’s initial take on a “vampire” Press play above to find out.
Elsewhere in this Sunday’s episode, titled “Drink Me” and airing Sunday at 8/7c: Sophie (played by Meagan Tandy) reluctantly requests that Batwoman keep her distance, knowing their interactions could compromise her career.

Sebastian Roché is carving out a new role for himself on The CW: The Vampire Diaries and Originals veteran is joining the cast of Batwoman in a recurring role, our sister site Deadline is reporting.
Roché will play Dr. Campbell, a plastic surgeon and philanthropist who is well-known and respected in Gotham City. Orange Is the New Black‘s Ruby Rose stars as the titular superhero, aka Kate Kane, who takes to the streets to fight crime as a vigilante.
Along with playing Mikael on The Vampire Diaries and later The Originals, Roché has had notable roles on Supernatural, Fringe, Criminal Minds, Once Upon a Time, The Young Pope and The Man in the High Castle, along with a long run as Jerry Jacks on the ABC daytime soap General Hospital.
He’s not the only recent addition to the Batwoman cast, either: MSNBC host Rachel Maddow will provide the voice of Vesper Fairchild, a radio and TV personality from the comics, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Maddow is not expected to appear on-screen in the role, however.
Batwoman — the latest entry in The CW’s Arrowverse franchise of superhero shows — debuts this Sunday, Oct. 6 at 8/7c, followed by the Season 5 premiere of Supergirl at 9 pm.

“The character is in response to how difficult it is to write a contemporary vampire in this newly woke world,” executive producer Julie Plec explains. “By definition, vampire lore is rooted in denying women agency, predatory culture and all these other terrible things [that we know are wrong]. He’s our response to that.”
Need a closer look? Happy to oblige:

Regardless of how Sebastian’s story unfolds, however, Plec promises a “very, very, very smolder-y” performance. “He walks through the halls of the production office and everybody has a Diet Coke commercial moment.”
Of course, Sebastian isn’t the only new character being introduced in Season 2. As TVLine exclusively reported, Alexis Denisof (Angel) is playing Professor Vardemus, an “urbane British sorcerer” who comes to work at the Salvatore School; Bianca Kajlich (Dawson’s Creek) will play Sheriff Mac, the new protector of Mystic Falls; and Leo Howard (Why Women Kill) is playing her son Ethan. Additionally, Bianca Santos (The Fosters) will play Ethan’s sister Maya — and they both have eyes for Hope.
Legacies returns with new episodes on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 9/8c. Your thoughts on the show’s newest addition, or any of the others? Drop ’em in a comment below.

Early on in FX’s terrific new comedy What We Do in the Shadows, we overhear what sounds like a typical argument between roommates about leaving food out too long. Only these roommates are also vampires, and instead of a jug of milk left out on the counter, they’re fighting about a human half-drained of his blood. (“Finish a whole victim before moving onto the next one,” one vampire chides the others. “It’s not hygienic!”) It’s this grandly goofy collision of the supernatural and the mundane that makes Shadows such a giddy joy to watch — and maybe the funniest new show of the year so far.
Shadows — premiering Wednesday, March 27 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first four — follows a trio of centuries-old vampires who now live in not-so-glamorous Staten Island. (“It is where the boat dropped us off,” female vamp Nadja, played by Natasia Demetriou, sighs.) They’re joined by cheerfully servile human Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), who accompanies vampire Nandor (Kayvan Novak) everywhere as his “familiar,” which is “like being a best friend… but also a slave,” he admits. The show is fully aware of how ridiculous all of this is, gleefully taking the sexy stuffing out of the usual vampire tropes and shining the spotlight instead on everyday chores and pointless bickering. Sure, these vampires still suck blood and make passionate love… but they have to buy groceries and take out the trash, too.
FX’s series is based on the 2014 indie comedy of the same name starring Flight of the Conchords‘ Jemaine Clement and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, and they both return here as executive producers, managing to scoop fresh laughs out of the tired mockumentary format. (The vampires’ confessionals are spiced up by cuts to ancient scrolls and paintings of vampires, illustrating their wild tales.) Thanks to Clement and Waititi’s expert guidance, Shadows‘ early episodes are chock full of quotable one-liners and majestically silly moments: You’ll never look at crepe paper the same way again after Nandor’s trip to the supermarket.
The cast is bursting with gems, too. I must confess I’ve never seen Novak, Guillén or Demetriou in anything before, but they’re all superb, nailing the show’s bone-dry comedic tone right away. (Demetriou’s Nadja, in particular, is a lusty, droll delight.) British comedy staple Matt Berry (The Mighty Boosh, The IT Crowd) is fantastic as pompous vamp Laszlo, who’s more likely to brag about his sexual conquests than clean up after himself. And the addition of a fourth vampire to the house — lethally dull office drone/”energy vampire” Colin (Better Call Saul‘s Mark Proksch) — is an absolute stroke of genius; the scenes of him feeding on his co-workers by trapping them in boring conversations are a scream. (And incredibly relatable.)
Shadows has such a precise, goofy sense of humor that it might not click for everyone. These vampires do feast on the living, so the very squeamish may have to cover their eyes at times. (The special effects of vampires levitating and turning into bats are quite low-tech, but charmingly so.) Plus, a full decade after Twilight, perhaps it’s a bit late to be parodying the vampire craze — but who cares when the end result is this funny? I ended up watching the series premiere three times… and still found myself laughing the third time through. Maybe it’s hypnosis, but I’m now fully under Shadows‘ spell.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: What We Do in the Shadows finds lots of laughs in the everyday lives of vampires, with a perfectly bone-dry tone and superb cast.
