Brexit will affect all Britons if a no-deal exit from the European Union (EU) takes place next year.

One way in which it will impact Britons is what will happen to British passports from March.

Last month the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) updated their travel advice for British passport holders in the unlikely event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal.

Anyone with fewer than 12 months left on their passport should renew the document now.

If not renewed, Britons could find themselves barred from travelling to countries in the EU.

“If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, after 29 March 2019, you’ll need at least six months left on your passport when you travel to most EU countries,” the FCO website stated.

“Most EU countries (though not the UK) are members of the Schengen Agreement,” explained the Home Office.

“This agreement removes passport checks and border controls at the borders between countries within the Schengen area. People can travel around the area as if it is one country.”

Before 29 March 2019, if you’re a British citizen, as an EU national, you’re currently able to enter the Schengen area if you have a valid passport.

“There’s no requirement for British passports to have a minimum or maximum validity period remaining when you enter or leave the Schengen area,” stated the Home Office.

However, after this March date, those without a passport with over six months left could be unable to travel to such favourite destinations as Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Italy and Portugal.

This is because, without a deal, British citizens could be treated the same as those from countries outside the EU in the borderless Schengen zone.

Other countries in the Schengen zone include; Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

However, even if your passport does have six months or more left on it, it will still need to be less than 10 years old.

The Home Office stated: “If you plan to travel to the Schengen area after 29 March 2019, to avoid any possibility of your adult British passport not complying with the Schengen Border Code we suggest that you check the issue date and make sure your passport is no older than nine years and six months on the day of travel.

“For example, if you’re planning to travel to the Schengen area on 30 March 2019, your passport should have an issue date on or after 1 October 2009.

“If your passport does not meet these criteria, you may be denied entry to any of the Schengen area countries, and you should renew your passport before you travel.”

After Britain leaves the EU the design of the British passport will change.

According to the Home Office: “Passports printed between 30 March 2019 up until the introduction of the new passport design will be burgundy but will not include the words ‘European Union’ on the front cover. This includes passports issued by the Crown Dependencies and Gibraltar.”

Blue passports will start being issued from late 2019. If you renew your passport between late 2019 and early 2020, you’ll be automatically issued with either a blue or burgundy British passport.

Car insurance WARNING: Errors that could leave thousands of drivers without valid cover https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-warning-errors-that-could-leave-thousands-of-drivers-without-valid-cover/ https://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-warning-errors-that-could-leave-thousands-of-drivers-without-valid-cover/#respond Sun, 16 Sep 2018 12:15:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/car-insurance-warning-errors-that-could-leave-thousands-of-drivers-without-valid-cover/

Car insurance is designed to protect you while on the road and the way the premium is calculated is based on a number of factors.

Premiums can range from a couple of hundred pounds a year to thousands every year and will protect you in the event of an accident or if you need to make a claim.

A number of simple mistakes on the application form could result in motorists driving illegally and risking landing some severe punishments.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), there are three main ways in which drivers are trying to trick the system to land a cheaper premium.

One of the main offences is ‘’ which is the process in which a driver puts someone else as the main driver on their premium to make it cheaper.

Usually, it is done by a parent who puts themselves as the main driver on their child’s first premium. It is, however, a form of insurance fraud.

One of the other offences motorists are making is by leaving out previous claims to unclaimed convictions which could leave them without valid cover.

The other issue is by putting a different postcode to the one they are living at or based can also result in an invalidation.

Mark Allen, the ABI’s Fraud and Financial Crime Manager, said to the MEN: “Insurers recognise that innocent mistakes and oversights happen.

“But anyone lying to get cheaper motor insurance, or tempted by cheap insurance offers without first checking that they are genuine, risks driving illegally.

The consequences include getting a criminal record and a massive financial headache if found to be at fault for a crash.

“The risks are just not worth it – especially when you can shop around for the right policy at the lowest price.”

Post-Brexit flights may not be valid in the UK – and airlines are NOT warning passengers https://briefnews.eu/post-brexit-flights-may-not-be-valid-in-the-uk-and-airlines-are-not-warning-passengers/ https://briefnews.eu/post-brexit-flights-may-not-be-valid-in-the-uk-and-airlines-are-not-warning-passengers/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 10:29:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/post-brexit-flights-may-not-be-valid-in-the-uk-and-airlines-are-not-warning-passengers/

Brexit is currently causing concern for travellers in light of the UK leaving the EU in March 2019.

In the event of a no-deal, it could mean Britons booking a holiday for next year could be left without protection and flights not being granted the airspace to fly.

The right to claim compensation and refunds for holidays could be affected if deals are not confirmed post-Brexit.

Yet airlines may not be doing enough to warn passengers of the risks they face when booking a holiday next year.

Which? looked at five of the UK’s biggest travel companies – Thomas Cook, TUI, Jet 2, Expedia, and On the Beach – to see if they had any warnings of what could happen to their rights post-Brexit.

TUI, Jet2 and On the Beach failed to respond to questions regarding whether flights would fly post-Brexit.

Thomas Cook changed their terms and conditions to explain how compensation would not be provided in the event of “airspace closures” as their Brexit clause labelled it as out of their control, whilst Thomas Cook encouraged passenger to take out travel insurance to be protected against “consequential losses”.

Expedia had more positive news and advised that airlines would still be under the Regulation 261/2004 and the Package Travel Directive, meaning compensation could be offered for passengers.

Peter Vicary-Smith, Chief Executive of Which?, commented: “This uncertainty for holidaymakers is just one of the many issues affecting people’s everyday lives that need to be resolved as we move closer to the date that the UK leaves the EU.”

Today, Which? has launched the Consumer Charter for Brexit, to ensure an aviation deal is secured to allow planes to still fly post-March 2019.

It lays out a number of issues such as the risk of Britons as well as how systems need to change.

The latest travel advice for British travellers who have booked travel after March 2019 abroad is to check their cancellation policies to ensure they are protected.

A number of airlines have warned travellers that their flights could be disrupted when the UK leaves the EU; Ryanair has placed a clause in their tickets that they may not be valid post-Brexit.

Vicary-Smith explained: “We want to work with Government and businesses on issues such as this in order to deliver a Brexit that puts consumers first.

“We want to ensure that people are supported by high levels of rights and protection – and with greater access than ever before to quality, affordable products and services.

“We must not miss the opportunity for the UK to improve consumer protections to become a world-leader.

“With control over all aspects of consumer protection the UK can and must do something special.”

Nestle under fire for selling California water ‘without a valid basis’ https://briefnews.eu/nestle-under-fire-for-selling-california-water-without-a-valid-basis/ https://briefnews.eu/nestle-under-fire-for-selling-california-water-without-a-valid-basis/#respond Thu, 28 Dec 2017 23:35:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nestle-under-fire-for-selling-california-water-without-a-valid-basis/

Nestle is under scrutiny by California legislators for selling water from the drought-stricken state. The company has been bottling and selling water taken from the San Bernardino Forest without proper permits.

Following a 20-month investigation, California’s State Water Resources Control Board issued a report suggesting Nestle cease taking water from Strawberry Creek in San Bernardino County.

“While Nestlé may be able to claim a valid basis of right to some water in Strawberry Creek, a significant portion of the water currently diverted by Nestlé appears to be diverted without a valid basis of right,” states the report, published last week.

The investigation was prompted by complaints from locals that Nestle was taking water from the San Bernardino Forest, selling it under its Arrowhead brand, and deceiving the public about the amounts it was using. The investigation found that Nestle is extracting seven times the amount it is entitled to.

Nestle gathers water from a diversion facility at the headwaters Strawberry Creek and pays the federal government $ 524 per year for the permit. Beginning in 1930, Nestle and its predecessors obtained special use permits from the Forest Service, the most recent of which expired in 1988.

California allocates water rights based partially on prior appropriation doctrine, so Nestle based its legal justification its on a 150-year-old claim by a man named David Noble Smith who owned what became the Arrowhead Springs Hotel. However, the water board refuted Nestle’s claim, saying it “not valid for Nestles current appropriative diversion and use of water from the San Bernardino National Forest.”

The company has been given 60 days to issue an interim compliance plan.

“We will continue to operate lawfully according to these existing rights and will comply fully with the California law,” a spokesman for Nestle said in response to the report.

The investigation was partly driven by the fact that, from 2011 to 2015, California was under a severe drought. A massive snowpack ended the drought in 2017, filling reservoirs and wells. Much of Southern California is still considered “abnormally dry” and portions of it are under a “moderate drought,”according to the National Drought Mitigation Center.

In 2016, Nestle secured the rights to purchase the groundwater in Fryeburg, Maine for up to 45 years, after several years of litigation that revealed local politicians and authorities’ links to the company. Local activists complained that the ruling damaged the town’s water sustainability.

Unsent text message accepted as valid will by Australian court https://briefnews.eu/unsent-text-message-accepted-as-valid-will-by-australian-court/ https://briefnews.eu/unsent-text-message-accepted-as-valid-will-by-australian-court/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 12:18:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/unsent-text-message-accepted-as-valid-will-by-australian-court/

An unsent text has been accepted as an official will by a court in Queensland, Australia. The message, found in the drafts folder of a deceased man’s phone, indicated he wanted all his possessions to go to his brother and nephew, instead of his wife and son. The 55-year-old composed the text before taking his own life in October 2016, reports ABC News.

The man’s wife took the case to the Brisbane Supreme Court to manage her deceased husband’s estate. Her argument suggested the text was not valid because it was never sent. But, judge Susan Brown said the phrasing of the message (which included the words “my will”) indicated the man was of sound mind. In the text, he’d also directed for his ashes to be put “in the back garden,” and wrote that he had a “bit of cash behind TV and bit in the bank.” The decision also took into account evidence of the man’s fraught relationship with his wife.

The Queensland government advises that a valid will must typically be in writing and signed in front of two witnesses. But, a change in the law in 2006, allowed for less formal types of documents to be considered as well. A holographic will, without witnesses, being deemed acceptable isn’t a new phenomenon. For instance, the shortest will to historically be recorded was of a Czech man who scribbled “everything to wife” on his bedroom wall in anticipation of his death. A dying Canadian farmer’s will, etched onto the fender of a tractor he was trapped beneath, was also determined by the courts to be valid almost 70 years ago.

Security researchers have unearthed a sprawling list of login credentials that allows anyone on the Internet to take over home routers and more than 1,700 “Internet of things” devices and make them part of a destructive botnet.

The list of telnet-accessible devices, currently posted at this Pastebin address, was first posted in June, but it has been updated several times since then. It contains user names and passwords for 8,233 unique IP addresses, 2,174 of which were still running open telnet servers as of Friday morning, said Victor Gevers, chairman of the GDI Foundation, a Netherlands-based nonprofit that works to improve Internet security. Of those active telnet services, 1,774 remain accessible using the leaked credentials, Gevers said. In a testament to the poor state of IoT security, the 8,233 hosts use just 144 unique username-password pairs.

It is likely that criminals have been using the list for months as a means to infect large numbers of devices with malware that turns them into powerful denial-of-service platforms. Still, for most of its existence, the list remained largely unnoticed, with only some 700 views. That quickly changed Thursday with this Twitter post. By Friday afternoon, there were more than 13,300 views.

Driving after Brexit: Will your UK licence be valid after Britain leaves the EU? https://briefnews.eu/driving-after-brexit-will-your-uk-licence-be-valid-after-britain-leaves-the-eu/ https://briefnews.eu/driving-after-brexit-will-your-uk-licence-be-valid-after-britain-leaves-the-eu/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 06:47:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/driving-after-brexit-will-your-uk-licence-be-valid-after-britain-leaves-the-eu/

Britain is in formal negotiations with EU policymakers to tackle the impending Brexit.

Many questions remain unanswered about how the lives of British nationals will change once the process has been finalised.

One subject that has been questioned is the UK driving licence, which each have a blue EU symbol in the top left corner.

The little pink card currently enables Britons to drive freely within the EU and European Economic Area (EEA), but all this will change after Brexit.

All licences will eventually have to be replaced to remove the EU symbol and likely, the privileges attached to it.

But how the process will unfold remains to be decided.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has refused to confirm whether current licences will expire in 2019 when Brexit is complete.

A DVLA spokesman told Express.co.uk: “At this stage it really is too early to speculate on the impacts of leaving the European Union.”

But if no deal can be negotiated, Britons could face having to apply for international driving permits to popular holiday destinations like Spain or France.

This would follow the current process for UK nationals who need to drive in a country outside of the EU or EEA.

The EU symbol was initially added to UK licences as part of an agreement by the EEA.

It aimed to standardise and replace the 110 different plastic and paper driving licenses of the 300 million drivers in the region.

On May 30, two suspects accused of extorting the so-called “Queen of Snapchat” as part of a sex-tape scandal are scheduled to appear in a Florida court. But as wild as the premise sounds, primarily the accused need only to answer a simple question on this visit. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Charles Johnson wants an explanation as to why Hencha Voigt and her then boyfriend, Wesley Victor, can’t remember the passcodes to their mobile phones.

if he doesn’t believe them or if they remain silent, the two suspects face possible contempt charges and indefinite jail time for refusing a court order to unlock their phones so prosecutors can examine text messages. Their defense to that order, however, rests on an unsettled area of law. Voigt and Victor maintain that a court order requiring them to unlock an encrypted device is a breach of the Fifth Amendment right to be free from compelled self-incrimination.

If things don’t go their way in court Tuesday, the duo certainly wouldn’t be the first ones ordered to prison for failing to abide by a judge’s decryption order. They likely won’t be the last ones, either.

3 types of artificial intelligence, but only 2 are valid https://briefnews.eu/3-types-of-artificial-intelligence-but-only-2-are-valid/ https://briefnews.eu/3-types-of-artificial-intelligence-but-only-2-are-valid/#respond Mon, 22 May 2017 01:48:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3-types-of-artificial-intelligence-but-only-2-are-valid/

For all of the visions of robots taking over the world, stealing jobs and outpacing humans in every facet of existence, we haven’t seen many cases of AI drastically changing industries or even our day-to-day lives just yet. For this reason, media and AI deniers alike question whether true broad-scale AI even exists. Some go as far as to conclude that it doesn’t.

The answer is a bit more nuanced than that.

Current AI applications can be broken down into three loose categories: Transformative AI, DIY (Do It Yourself) AI, and Faux AI. The latter two are the most common and therefore tend to be what all AI is judged by.

The everyday AI applications we’ve seen most of so far are geared toward accessing and processing data for you, making suggestions based on it, and sometimes even executing very narrow tasks. Alexa turning on your your music, telling you what’s happening in your day, and how the weather is outside is a good example. Another is your iPhone predicting a phone number for a contact you don’t already have saved.

While these applications might not live up to the image of AI we have in our heads, it doesn’t mean they’re not AI. It just means they’re not all that life-changing.

The kind of AI that will “take over the world” — or at least, have the most dramatic effect on how people live and work — is what I think of as Transformative AI. Transformative AI turns data into insights and insights into instructions. Then, instead of simply delivering those instructions to the user so he or she can make more informed decisions, it gets to work, autonomously carrying out an entire complex process on its own, based on what it’s learned and continues to learn, along the way.

This type of AI isn’t yet ubiquitous. The most universally-known manifestation of it is likely the self-driving car. Self-driving cars are an accessible example of what it looks like for a machine to take in constantly-changing information, process and act on it, and thereby completely eliminate the need for human participation at any stage.

Driving is not a fixed process that is easily automated. (If it were, AI wouldn’t be necessary.) While there is indeed a finite set of actions involved in driving, the data set the AI must process shifts every single time the passenger gets into the car: road conditions, destination, route, oncoming and surrounding traffic, street lanes, street closures, proximity to neighboring vehicles, turning radiuses, a pedestrian stepping out in front of the car, and so on. The AI must be able to take all of this in, make a decision about it, and act on it right then and there, just like a human driver would.

This is Transformative AI, and we know it’s real because it’s already happening.

Now, imagine the implications of this technology applied elsewhere. Most people will likely experience Transformative AI through their jobs or industries before it directly affects the way they live. In business, the massive amounts of Big Data that companies are collecting will be the “fuel” that AI uses to single-handedly power processes currently handled by entire teams, and it will do so with far greater precision and efficiency.

We’re seeing this in the marketing space, as brands like Cosabella and Dole Asia have replaced their digital account teams and agencies built on artificial intelligence platforms.

But these are still early days and it will be a while before these types of stories are commonplace. In the meantime, we’ll mostly see different manifestations of DIY AI and Faux AI.

DIY AI is any artificial intelligence platform whose end goal is to make you, the user, more informed, so that you can then do the remaining work yourself. This type of AI can take in and process large amounts of data to produce insights, but that’s the end of the rope for it. Put another way, it’s prescriptive and practical, but not curative.

Nevertheless, it can be extremely valuable to companies and organizations that have been relying on data scientists to make sense of their data manually. Even the most talented data scientists need far more time to process, analyze and make recommendations from data than does a machine. A few of the many reasons for this is that humans require things like sleep, food and the weekends off. A more significant reason is that humans simply don’t have the same “processing power” that machines do.

An example of DIY AI is Salesforce’s Einstein. In an ad they placed in the New York Times in early May, Salesforce described how Einstein “qualifies leads, predicts when customers are ready to buy, and helps close more deals.” In other words, the AI is reading companies’ CRM data, making sense of it, and setting up sales people for more success than they’d have if they had to wade through the same data on their own. But ultimately, the execution elements of the sales process are still DIY for the user.

It’s worth noting that DIY AI is often “bolt-on” meaning that the AI is essentially bolted onto an existing technology. It then acts as the brain that makes a once “dumb” (or static) system “smart” (or insightful). For the sake of comparison, a Transformative AI must be built from the ground up, meaning there are no parts of the technology that aren’t AI-driven.

The final category of AI we’re seeing is the one that spoils it for everyone: Faux AI. While DIY AI might seem lackluster or boring, Faux AI is pretending to be something that it’s not. As with any new technology that creates hype and intrigue, AI has inspired companies to prey on the public’s lack of understanding of it. Many of the companies doing this are re-positioning their predictive and automation technologies as AI, when really they’re just rules-based applications that aren’t governed by machine learning.

Not to diss on any chatbots, but there are a few culprits in that space. They look and act like AI agents, but they are not really using machine learning. They are pretenders.

Programmatic ad buying is a good example of an insights-driven, predictive technology that many people confuse with AI — and which often passes itself off as the same. Because programmatic technology has been around for over a decade, learning that it is “AI” (which it’s not) can leave people feeling like artificial intelligence isn’t so special.

The way AI will evolve and begin infiltrating our lives is two-fold.

Some of the more robust DIY AI out there is actually “Transformative AI in Training.” The data they’re collecting and processing will “train” their algorithms over time, so that they’re ultimately equipped with all the information they need to begin acting on it (assuming they’re programmed to do so).  And, technologists who are just getting started on their platforms will build them with AI from the ground-up, rather than bolting on “training wheels” after the fact. This result is two active sources of Transformative AI that will ultimately shape up into what we imagine AI can be — ideally, in the most positive way possible.

Or Shani is the CEO of Albert, an AI marketing platform.
