If you’ve seen any of the recent Star Wars shows, you’ve heard the work of Respeecher. It’s a Ukrainian startup that uses archival recordings and a “proprietary AI algorithm” to create new dialogue featuring the voices of “performers from long ago.” In the case of Jones, the company worked with Lucasfilm to recreate his voice as it had sounded when film audiences first heard Darth Vader in 1977.
According to Vanity Fair, Jones had signed off on Disney using recordings of his voice and Respeecher’s software to “keep Vader alive.” Lucasfilm veteran Matthew Wood told the outlet that James guided the Sith Lord’s performance in Obi-Wan Kenobi, acting as “a benevolent godfather,” but it was ultimately the AI that gave Vader his voice in many of the scenes.
While there’s something to be said about preserving Vader’s voice, Disney’s decision to use an AI to do so is likely to add fuel to disagreements over how such technology should be used in creative fields. For instance, Getty Images recently banned AI-generated art over copyright concerns. With Jones, there's the possibility we could hear him voice Vader long after he passes away.
]]>
James Earl Jones is 91 years young, and after voicing the character for 40 years, it sounds like he has finally moved on from the role of Darth Vader. By now, “Star Wars” fans have gotten used to seeing actors digitally resurrected or de-aged, as in the case of Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Mark Hamill in “The Book of Boba Fett.” What you may not know is that the voices of some legacy actors are also being digitally recreated via A.I.
Vanity Fair has a new report out about the Ukrainian origins of the new/old Darth Vader’s voice, and in the context of that, the magazine mentions that Jones has officially “stepped back from the role” of Darth Vader.
Vader played a big part in the recent Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and you may have noticed that his voice sounded different in that series, more like his old self than it did in “Rogue One,” where the effects of Jones’ age made the character’s voice sound a bit more tremulous. It turns out this is because Lucasfilm brought in a Ukraine-based company called Respeecher to synthetically construct new Vader dialogue for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” based on archival recordings.

Respeecher is the same company that was behind Luke Skywalker’s voice in “The Book of Boba Fett,” so it already had an existing relationship with Lucasfilm, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year severely complicated matters when it came to “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Its synthetic-speech artists were still wrapping up work on the series even as Russian soldiers were crossing over into Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Needless to say, this serves as a sobering reminder of real-world events playing out not only in tandem with but behind the very scenes of the entertainment we consume.
Matthew Wood, the supervising sound editor for Skywalker Sound, said Jones acted as “a benevolent godfather” overseeing Respeecher’s work on Vader’s voice for “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” “He had mentioned he was looking into winding down this particular character,” Wood said. According to the report, however, they made sure to “inform the actor about their plans for Vader and heed his advice on how to stay on the right course.”
Jones famously overcame a childhood stuttering impediment to develop one of the most well-known voices in movie history. He also voiced Mufasa in “The Lion King,” in addition to playing live-action roles in films like “Coming to America.” Some “Star Wars” fans may have already consigned themselves to him retiring from the Darth Vader role due to his age, but now we have official confirmation that Jones is passing the baton, and all that remains to be said is: may the Force be with you, sir.

After 42 years and eight movies, Star Wars is still in the parent trap. While Rey and the fans continue to wonder who her parents really were (surely Kylo Ren was lying?), the whole world and possibly galaxy knows that Luke’s father was Anakin slash Vader. With hindsight, it appeared to be the most masterful sleight of hand at the time, shocking audiences even more than it did poor Luke. Back when the Original Trilogy was being made, however, the rediscovered first draft of Leigh Brackett’s script for The Empire Strikes Back reveals something startlingly different. Since it was apparently based on an outline by George Lucas, was he actually making things up as he went along?
In the original script, shared by StarWarz.com and attributed to Brackett, the scene where Luke and Yoda see the ghost of Obi-Wan (Ben) on Dagobah was originally substantially different. Not only was Yoda called ‘Minch’ and Luke’s sister was called ‘Nellith’, another ghost then appeared, called only ‘Skywalker.’ Some of the dialogue, including references to ‘Nellith’ and ‘Minch’ have already been crossed through, showing changes were underway.
EMPIRE STRIKES BACK ORIGINAL SCRIPT: Another half-ghostly form emerges from the mists; a tall fine-looking man who approaches Luke slowly, looking at him.
BEN: “Your father.”
LUKE: “My father.”
Even with his new-found maturity, Luke finds this an awesome, not to say shattering, moment. They look at each other.
SKYWALKER: “You’ve grown well, Luke. I’m proud of you.” (Luke, not knowing what to say, says nothing) “Proud, and afraid for you. You’re going into battle untried. Did your uncle ever speak to you about Nellith?
LUKE: “Nellith? No. Who is she?”
SKYWALKER: “Your sister.”
LUKE: “My sister? I have a sister? But why didn’t Uncle Owen…”
SKYWALKER: “It was my request. When I saw the Empire closing in, I sent you both away for your own safety, far apart from each other.”
LUKE: “Where is she? What’s her name?”
SKYWALKER: “If I were to tell you, Darth Vader could get that information from your mind and use her as a hostage. Not yet, Luke. When it’s time…”
The most immediately striking point is that Darth Vader and Skywalker (Luke’s father) are clearly different people. One is already a Force ghost while one is living.
This lines up with Obi-Wan’s famous comment in The Force Awakens that Vader killed Luke’s father. The filmmakers retconned this plothole by explaining Obi-Wan was speaking figuratively since Vader subsumed Anakin.
This script has been widely shared, analysed and scrutinised over the years. It was never officially recognised by Lucasfilm and Brackett herself sadly died back in 1978, making it impossible to verify, but she was still credited as a writer on The Empire Strikes Back, indicating some of her work was used in the final version.
If this script had made it to the screen, the entire Original Trilogy and the Prequel Trilogy would have been changed beyond recognition. In fact, without that devastating shock reveal, it might never have achieved such iconic status in cinema history.
The final movie in the original Star Wars trilogy sees a climactic showdown between Luke Skywalker, his father Anakin – aka Vader – and the disfigured Emperor. The Emperor is sent to his death, before Vader then appears to finally have a moment of peace with his son before he too passes away. But are the two deaths linked more than we first thought?
In a new theory, Reddit user bjthebard wrote: “I was just rewatching ep. VI and when Vader asks Luke to remove his helmet, Luke warns that if he does, he will die.
“Vader responds by saying, ‘Nothing can stop that now.’ This takes place almost immediately after he kills Emperor Palpatine.
“So Palpatine knows the secret to keeping others alive…”
They added: “I’ve always seen Darth Vader as a cyborg, or complicated life support system with wrinkly old Ani inside, but if the Force energy from Palpatine is the only thing keeping him alive it kinda changes my perception of things.
“He’s almost more of a walking zombie or a lich, only living by the Emperor’s necromancy.
“Ok, lich is a stretch, but its still much different than half-man half-machine.”
The theory has been 91% upvoted, but – while many agreed it’s a fascinating new perspective on the scene, most assumed it’s not actually what George Lucas was intending to portray.
“Mmm… it’s a cool idea, but probably not,” responded one user. “Vader wanted to overthrow the Emperor with Luke, remember?
“That wouldn’t really work if Vader needs Palps alive to survive.”
Another said: “If you’re asking seriously then the answer is obviously not. However I do like the concept and wouldn’t mind another pair of Sith or Jedi even to have this dynamic in another story.”
The final movie in the main Star Wars saga – Episode 9 – is currently in production.
Ahead of its release in late 2019, filming has been underway in locations such as Jordan and Pinewood.
One thing is clear, most fans want a fitting conclusion to the story of the Skywalkers in Episode 9. JJ Abrams has a daunting task ahead, especially with numerous reports Luke will return, as well as persistent rumours and leaks about his father, both as Anakin and Darth Vader. A new leak describes a potentially game-changing scene with Luke and Rey, dangerous Sith powers and a huge clue about who will finally bring balance to the Force.
As always, treat any such leaks with caution and the awareness that storyboarded scenes and artwork do not always make it to the final on screen movie.
The leak says: “A description of Luke Skyalker and Rey on a jungle world. In front of Rey, Luke has his hand raised with a kyber crystal floating above the palm of his hand. The crystal is red like the one seen in The Last Jedi however it could be a different one. Though the one in the Last Kedi was a fragment, this is a full red kyber crystal. Rey is meditating on a rock as the red kyber crystal floats towards her and then falls into the palm of her hand. This could be Luke’s final lesson of constructing a lightsaber of her own.”
Luke, of course, only gave Rey two of the three promised lessons in The Last Jedi, but is he now introducing her to Sith Dark Side powers? This is what Snoke wanted. This is also an echo of Kylo Ren’s torment and Anakin/Vader before him.
Fans will remember the red crystal pendant from Episode 8 and it was definitely just a small shard with a Sith kyber crystal from the Old Repblic era. Luke, however, had a treasure trove of artefacts on Ahch-To and we already know Rey took the books from the Jedi temple, so she may also have salvaged more of Luke’s belongings.
Luke could also be contacting Rey from the other side and continuing to teach her and guide her to important hidden Jedi places in the galaxy where powerful texts and objects have been preserved.
As for the importance of this scene, every Jedi (and Sith) must build their own lightsaber as a rite of passage. There has been much chatter about Rey having a unique new lighsaber that possibly combines two colours.
The colour traditionally represents the user’s aptitudes and inclinations, although all Sith only have red blades. Surely Rey has not gone over to the Dark Side, so she will not be creating a purely Sith lightsaber.
This raises the possibility she may create a lightsaber that combines Lght and Dark Side crystals. There are rumours Luke’s missing green lighstaber will make a return, after the blue crystal was shattered at the end of The Last Jedi.
Imagine if somehow Vader’s red crystal survived that fall on the second Death Star. Combining the two Skywalker crystals in one weapon would be truly symbolic.
All Skywalkers feel the pull from both sides of the Force so this would also feed back into the original belief that Rey would turn out to be part of teh family at the core of the entire franchise..
Even if she is not, even if it is another red crystal, and indeed another light side crystal, the idea that Rey coud wield a weapon combining both sides of the Force would be the ultimate revelation that she is the Chosen One. It would also finally lay to rest the two sides of Anakin/Vader.
It is a tantalising idea.
The novelisation of the final prequel movie has obviously been out in the world for a great many years now, but now it is finding a whole new audience online. And the way it describes Anakin adapting to his new suit is quite powerful.
Reddit user darthmeteos even described it as their “favourite passage in any book ever”.
Presumably this is from the Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith novelisation penned by Matthew Stover, published in April 2005.
It sees Anakin running through the various sensations in his newly-suited body, after parting ways with Obi-Wan Kenobi and fully succumbing to the Dark Side.

One fan responded on the Reddit thread: “I was always disappointed in the fall of Vader in ROTS, it seemed rushed and didn’t make much sense to me. He just gives in after killing Windu.
“The novelization made it make sense to me, and actually improved the movie for me.”
Another wrote: “Favourite SW book. It is a must read people.”
Revenge of the Sith was, at the time, thought to be the last Star Wars movie; until Disney took ownership of LucasFilm and green-lit the current sequel trilogy.
It starred Hayden Christensen as Anakin, with Natalie Portman as Padmé and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan.
The prequels were much-maligned at the time but seem to have found more of a warm reception now; as fans look back at the positives of the three films.
The whole Skywalker saga will come to an end with Star Wars: Episode 9, which is currently in production under the watchful eye of JJ Abrams.
That film is released in December 2019.
Just when fans thought the story of Darth Vader couldn’t get any darker.
These new revelations are actually canon, which means they are now officially part of Star Wars lore, and the show what lay in the darkest depth of Vader’s heart.
Fans have always been fascinated with the castle on Mustafar and the tantalising scenes from Rogue One only intensified the need to know what lies withing those iconic walls.
Not only does it involve Vader and Palpatine, it reveals a terrifying new Sith and plans to bring back Padme from beyond the grave…
Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 22: Fortress Vader, Part IV is the twenty-second issue of the long-running comic book series Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith.
The latest issues are written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli and have been exploring the darkest scerets of Mustafar and Vader’s terrible home.
Issue #22 Part IV was released this month and reveals more about Sith Lord Momin, who even Palpatine regarded as a dangerous heretic and whose life force lives on in a terrible mask which the Emperor gifts to Vader.
Together Vader and Momin create that iconic and dreadful castle and imbue it with evil power and, now it has been revealed, a truly terrible purpose.
The official plot synopsis outlines what happened but then the comic itself reveals even more terrible secrets.
It says: “Vader has requested that his master grant him a planet to do with what he will — and he has chosen Mustafar, a world ripe with dark side energies…and the site of his greatest defeat. Palpatine has charged Chief Imperial Architect Alva Brenne to build Vader’s fortress there and gifted his apprentice with the Mask of Lord Momin, a mysterious dark side artifact.
“But Brenne has failed to capture Vader’s vision for the fortress. And Momin’s mask has revealed its power — by murdering Brenne, possessing her assistant and offering up its own designs for Fortress Vader….”
Together Vader and Momin create something with a shocking purpose.
The castle on Mustafar was a haven for Vader, his stronghold and, he hoped, the seat for his power when he overthrew Palpatine.
However, it now seems that he tolerated Momin so that the castle woud be engineered to harness and focus the dark power on Mustafar for an even greater task.
Everything that shaped Anakin’s fall to the Dark Side was rooted in his love for Padme and his fear of losing her.
After her death he wasn’t just consumed with rage and negation, it now seems he was obsessed with trying to bring her back. Which raises the new question of what – or who – is in that castle?
Did Vader bring Padme’s body and tomb to Mustafar from Naboo?
There are strong theories that Kylo Ren and hsi knights will go to the castle in Episode 9 in search of secrets from the past. What might they find?
Star Wars 9 is out in December 2019
Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 22: Fortress Vader Part IV is out now
The sequel to The Last Jedi is currently shooting, but very little is known of how the last episode of the entire Skywalker saga will go.
Nevertheless alleged leaks and rumours keep sprouting up and the latest concerns a Darth Vader cameo during a flashback duel with Luke Skywalker.
Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh – who claims he has sources – give details, but the following should be taken with a grain of salt since it’s all unconfirmed.
In his video, he says the scene sees: “Specifically both Kylo Ren and Rey walking on a catwalk inside the interior of some cave.”
He continued: “In front of them are two figures in a lightsaber duel.
“It’s Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
“However this is no duel seen in the films.
“We see Darth Vader’s red lightsaber clashing with Luke’s blue one.”
Zeroh added: “However Luke is in his ceremonial outfit, as seen at the end of Star Wars A New Hope.”
“This to me sounds like it comes directly from the comic book called Vader Down.”
Star Wars fans may be familiar with the comic, which includes a brief lightsaber duel between the father and son.
However it takes place between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Oculus Quest owners will have an exclusive Star Wars VR series to look forward to this spring: Vader Immortal. We only got a brief glimpse of it during the Oculus Connect 5 keynote today, but it looks like it’ll place you on Mustafar, the volcanic planet that houses Vader’s lair. The three episode series will be written by David S. Goyer, the prolific genre writer who’s also working on the Secrets of the Empire, another Star Wars VR experience developed by the ILMxLAB and The Void. Vader Immortal will also tie into that series, and it’s going to take place between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One in the Star Wars universe.
