Germany will keep two nuclear power stations open and on standby in case of an energy crisis — marking a U-turn in its plan to phase out the fuel source by the end of 2022.
The two plants — located in the southwestern state of Baden Württemberg and the southeastern state of Bavaria — were to be shut by the end of this year but will now stay open until mid-April 2023.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a Monday statement that the country has a "very high supply security" for electricity, but noted that "this year is a special year across Europe."
"The Russian attack on Ukraine has created a tense situation in the energy markets and we are doing everything we can to avoid a gas shortage," Habeck added.
Germany is reliant on piped natural gas from Russia, which accounts for 35% of the country's imports of the fuel. However, it now faces a potential energy shortage in winter as Russia has shut down natural-gas flows via a critical pipeline that delivers natural gas to Germany and beyond.
"It remains very unlikely there will be crisis situations and extreme scenarios," Habeck said. "But as Minister responsible for security of supply, I do everything that is necessary to fully guarantee security of supply."
Habeck added that Germany is still committed to phasing out nuclear energy, and the two plants would be activated only when necessary.
The move to keep the nuclear plants open is a big deal as Germany has been phasing out nuclear energy since Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. It's a highly contentious issue in Germany, where the anti-nuclear movement dates back to the 1970s.
However, amid the country's unprecedented energy crisis, even its Green Party — born of the anti-nuclear movement — has softened its stance on switching off all of Germany's nuclear reactors this year. Habeck belongs to the Green Party.
"We have to prepare for the worst," Habeck told a news briefing, Reuters reported on Monday. "The plants will only reopen when more power is needed."

Derek, 53, has spent the past 12 months in hospital after contracting coronavirus last March and Kate, 53, has been left in turmoil over his condition. Despite the odds, he has pulled through and in an incredible development, he is now home and getting used to having his family around him 24/7. There are still huge steps to take in his recovery from the illness as the home has been adapted to meet his needs. However, appearing on Friday’s edition of This Morning, family friend Ben, 46, explained this shouldn’t have happened so quickly.
The Good Morning Britain star spoke with Eamonn Holmes, 61, and Ruth Langsford, 61, about interviewing Kate earlier in the day.
Ben referenced the Finding Derek documentary which aired last month and explained how medical professionals told the mother-of-two her husband would be in hospital for the foreseeable future.
However, when filming finished, the nation was put into a third lockdown and Derek’s recovery began to regress.
Therefore, it was decided the father-of-two should be allowed home to spend time with his family and build up more communication with them.
Ben said: “He shouldn’t have left the hospital until the end of 2021 but they needed to stimulate him more so suddenly, he’s back.”

Laurel Thomas (played by Charlotte Bellamy) used to be married to the Emmerdale’s vicar Ashley Thomas (John Middleton), and as a man of God, he was constantly explaining the reasons behind some of the lessons life threw at him and his wife. But in recent months, Laurel has been tested far beyond what she thought she could cope with. In upcoming scenes, she left teetering on the edge of destroying her sobriety. Luckily, an intervention occurs, but will Laurel listen if she is advised to leave the village for a while and seek help?
As a recovering alcoholic dating a recovering drug addict, Laurel has done her best to keep her relationship with Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) and make their dysfunctional family happy.
A few weeks ago, when she found out she was pregnant and viewers saw Laurel experience a mixture of emotions.
But she was challenged further when she was told the baby had Down syndrome.
Despite making the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy, Laurel has been left harbouring feelings of grief and guilt.

In heartbreaking scenes, ITV viewers saw the storyline play out from several character’s perspectives; Laurel and Jai, Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) – with the latter having welcomed Leo, an extremely happy Down syndrome child into their lives nine years ago.
With Laurel only a few years away from hitting 50 years old, she made the heartbreaking decision to not have her and Jai’s child.
While she knew this was the right choice for her and her family, she faced judgement from Rhona who wasted no time being extremely vocal with her criticism.
Over the last few weeks, Laurel has got on with her day-to-day routine, seemingly coping.
However, when she attended David Metcalfe’s (Matthew Wolfenden) ‘welcome to the family’ party hosted by Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu), her sobriety was questioned.
Fans will see her contemplate what she should do next; drink it or pour it down the sink.
But her thought process is interrupted by an alert from her phone, it is a pregnancy app which delivers a cruel blow.
Succumbing to temptation, Laurel knocks back a shot of vodka, feeling a sense of release as she swallows.
She is interrupted by Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) bursting through her front door and the community busy-body catches her red-handed with the bottle.
It isn’t long before Nicola questions her best friend, and instead of passing judgement or shouting at her, Nicola holds Laurel.
Finally, Laurel tells Nicola about the baby and the termination, and the cafe owner’s heart breaks for her.
When Nicola gets a moment to herself, she calls Jai and when he arrives home, he sits Laurel down and talks to her.
Jai reminds his partner that he understands the battle she is enduring with alcohol, as well as reminding her he also empathises with her grief for their baby.
Will he be able to help Laurel? Or has the current circumstances become too much for her and she feels the need to leave the Dales for a while and gather her thoughts?
Speaking about the storyline previously, the actress who plays Laurel said: “Terminating a pregnancy is an emotive subject, but I think, as a programme, what Emmerdale does brilliantly is portray difficult stories that are important to tell.
“Laurel and Jai’s story will take the audience on the journey of them coming to this conclusion and having some understanding why they do.
“There are some very powerfully written scenes that I hope will give a fair portrayal of their situation.
“When I embarked on this storyline I was well aware of the responsibility of the subject matter, but the scripts have been so well written and I think the story is told fairly,” she added.
Viewers were left divided by the storyline, with some understanding of Laurel’s choice and other criticising.

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
Fawlty Towers, in its own right, has become a prominent part of the British institution, with actors John Cleese, 80, becoming infamous for his role as Basil Fawlty on the BBC comedy. The programme aired on the broadcaster from 1975 to 1979 but has continued to be shown on UKTV, as other former shows have also done so. However, the Don’t Mention The War episode was temporarily removed from UKTV because it contained “racial slurs” which would be deemed as inappropriate in today’s political climate. However, the decision is now being reversed with action being taken to address the “offensive” material.
In recent days, sitcoms such as Little Britain and Come Fly With Me have been removed from all streaming platforms due to the use of blackface.
Several comedians such as Keith Lemon star Leigh Francis, 47, have also apologised for using such material in sketches from many years ago.
This comes as the Black Lives Matter movement has sparked a further global conversation about racism in the United States and across the world, following the deaths of George Floyd and numerous black people as a result of police brutality.
The BBC were going to take further action by removing the controversial episode of Fawlty Towers from their archives as the instalment in question sees leading character Basil goose-stepping whilst shouting “don’t mention the war” in front of German visitors, as well as other offensive slurs.
However, UKTV, which is owned by BBC studios, have confirmed they will not be removing the episode after all.

A statement for the channel read: “We already offer guidance to viewers across some of our classic comedy titles, but we recognise that more contextual information can be required on our archive comedy, so we will be adding extra guidance and warnings to the front of programmes to highlight potentially offensive content and language.
“We will reinstate Fawlty Towers once that extra guidance has been added, which we expect will be in the coming days.
“We will continue to look at what content is on offer as we always have done,” the statement continued.
Therefore, the shock U-turn will allow the episode to still be available in the archives, but prior to the episode, a message will be displayed to warn viewers of the content included.
Following the decision to reinstate the episode, fans have taken to social media to commend the broadcaster’s actions.
One viewer wrote on Twitter: “@UKTV The perfect, measured and intelligent response to a difficult situation. Thank you. #fawltytowers.”
Another added: “Even if it’s not unjust for content to be censored by those with rights to it, reinstating #fawltytowers is the right call. But sensibilities also move on, so warnings about language are the least one should expect. #blacklivesmatter #justice #Liberty.”
Whilst a third commented on the micro-blogging site: “Common Sense prevails #fawltytowers.”
Britain’s Got Talent hosts Ant McPartlin, 44, and Dec Donnelly, 44, have publicly apologised for any offence they may have caused from a past sketch on their show, Saturday Night Takeaway.
A statement read on their Instagram and Twitter accounts: “We realise that this was wrong and want to say that we are sincerely sorry to everyone that we offended.
“We purposely stopped doing this several years ago and certainly would not make these sketches today.
“We had already taken steps to ensure footage was taken down and have again recently confirmed with ITV that these segments, and any other historical content that could cause offence, does not appear on either the ITV Hub or the Saturday Night Takeaway YouTube Channel.”
Fawlty Towers is available to watch on UKTV.
Speaking to Seventeen, the actor said the upcoming instalments will see the huge cast having more scenes together, rather than separately.
She said: “I can feel us already going back to the season one vibe of us all having scenes together.
“We really all do love each other and get along really well.”
Madelaine also confessed the show will see many more scenes involving Cheryl and her on-screen girlfriend Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan).

The programme’s original hosts will next month present the show they fronted for more than a decade – despite Judy declaring she would never go back. She said in 2011: “I wouldn’t remotely want to do television again.” But last month the married couple returned as guests. The public response was so overwhelming they have now agreed to stand in for regular Friday hosts Eamonn Holmes and wife Ruth Langsford.
If the two-hour slot goes well it could become a regular gig for the Daily Express columnist pair, whose on-screen bickering became legendary.
Richard, 63, and Judy, 71, launched This Morning 31 years ago before quitting after a row with ITV executives in 2001.
Their stint included interviews with a young Phillip Schofield, who Richard described as “a sex symbol”. Other highlights included Richard dressing as spoof character Ali G and wondering if Judy did not want to present with him “because I is black?”.
“No, it’s because you look like an idiot,” she retorted.
Remembered for the way Judy always had to stop Richard giving away too much about their private life, the pair also endured a streaker on the weather map and staged the first on-air examinations for testicular cancer.
On the day they left, Judy cried and George Michael rang in to say he would miss them.
The couple will return on October 25. They said: “This Morning holds a very special place in our hearts, so we couldn’t be more delighted to take the helm once again.”
Editor Martin Frizell said: “We have been wanting to see Richard and Judy guest present for a while. We can’t wait to have these legends back.”
Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, the Conservative Home Office minister was confronted by Piers Morgan on her 2016 pro-Remain Brexit campaign beliefs. Prior to the referendum, Ms Atkins claimed staying in the EU would mean “more jobs, lower prices and greater security”. But speaking to Piers Morgan today she admitted a good Brexit deal would deliver exactly the same things.
Mr Morgan said: “Two years ago you told us all when you were encoring us to vote Remain that staying in the EU would mean more jobs, lower prices and greater security.
“Now you’re telling us the complete opposite.
“Now you’re telling us that Brexit would mean more jobs, lower prices and greater security.
“So I put it to you that given you yourself clearly have actually no idea which one of these two things would be beneficial to this country, why should we trust any politicians like you to deliver anything beneficial to this country?”
The Tory MP replied she accepted to have been on the “losing side of the argument” and to want to keep the Government’s promise to deliver on the referendum result.
She said: “I was on the losing side of the argument, I’ve accepted that.
“And I said that I would honour the result of the referendum.”
The ITV host branded the admission a “shameless U-turn” on Twitter after the interview.
He wrote: “Takes a special kind of brass neck to perform so shameless a U-turn about such a major issue.”
Theresa May is expected to reveal her Brexit plan B to MPs in Parliament later today.
After the crushing defeat of her deal last week, the Prime Minister is unwilling to budge on her key demands and will be explaining how she intends to proceed in both oral and written statements to the House of Commons.
She will also table a “neutral” motion to be debated and voted on – along with any amendments tabled by MPs – on Tuesday, January 29.
This week will also see Mrs May reaching out to MPs, business leaders and trade unionists in an attempt to find a way forward, Government sources have confirmed.
Despite the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel’s remarks, Lauren still ended up at the bottom of the leaderboard with 35 points.
Viewers at home were delighted by the pair’s performance and took to social media to congratulate her.
One fan tweeted: “After a few dodgy weeks Lauren had such a bounce back! #Strictly.”
“In a surprising turn of events, Lauren & AJ were easily my favourites of the night. Simple, elegant & not overly cheesy. #scd #Strictly,” posted another.
A third wrote: “#Strictly Lauren & AJ – best dance yet! Absolutely beautiful. Really moving. Well done Lauren x.”
Another viewer simply posted: “Lauren and AJ were brilliant #Strictly.”
It comes after Strictly Come Dancing couple Stacey and Kevin Clifton danced the American Smooth Foxtrot to I Dreamed A Dream, with Stacey dressed as a character from Les Misérables.
Host Tess Daly gushed over the performance, describing it as “beautiful” and “moving”, adding: “I saw Bruno with a little tear in his eye. I’ve never seen Bruno cry before.”
Bruno looked tearful as Shirley Balls was seen to wipe away tears from her eyes.
Awarding the pair a 10, Shirley said: “There are some time in our life when we do something so magical that we capture it in our heart and stay there forever, and that was that.
“It was seamless. I loved everything from beginning to end.”
Bruno also awarded the pair a 10, revealing that he was “a mess”, saying: “Look what you’ve done to me, I’m a mess. That was so special. I really forgot who I was. That really was so special.”
Despite the “stunning” routine, Stacey and Kevin were not placed at the top of the leaderboard.
The pair scored a total of 38 points from the judging panel, putting them in third place.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman announced: “It’s time to take a look at the leaderboard.
“Faye and Giovani are at the top of the leaderboard with a perfect score of 40.
“Down the other end are Lauren and AJ and Charles and Karen, each with a score of 35.
“Remember, you can change all of that by picking up the phone or going online and voting for your favourite.
“They all want a golden ticket to next week’s semi-final. The vote closes at 8.45pm tonight.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow on BBC One at 7.20pm.
Rooney came on as a second-half substitute to earn his 120th and final cap for England.
The former Manchester United and Everton star had not played for England for two years – but this match was something of a testimonial with proceeds going to the Wayne Rooney Foundation.
Gary Neville had claimed ahead of the match that Rooney was in Gareth Southgate’s squad on merit.
He even suggested Rooney could play in the UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia on Sunday.
But Wayne Rooney insists he is hanging up his international boots for good.
“It has been fun being around the players, it’s been great seeing how they work and have improved. I’ve said my own personal thanks but I want to say thank you to the FA, to Gareth Southgate and to the players for the opportunity,” he said.
“Tonight was great, a great way to finish my international career, I thought the lads played great. Unfortunately I couldn’t get a goal but I’ll remember it for a long time.
“I’m not a player who hasn’t played for a year and come back, I’ve been playing at a high level. I think I fitted in well.
“It’s two years since I’ve played foe England and I’m proud to be the record goalscorer for England.”
Neville was co-commentating for Sky Sports and before the game said: “I think if he scores a goal he’s likely to go and grab Gareth Southgate at the end and try and keep him in the squad for Sunday as well.
“He will want to make a mark, he’ll want to go out with a goal obviously.
“I’d imagine he will be in the box at every opportunity.”
DC United star Rooney didn’t get his goal – although he came close to making contact with a cross-goal ball.
Rooney was presented with a plaque before kick off commemorating his time with England.
He added: “I think it is new, I know we are different from other countries, I think it’s great that the FA are celebrating players who have left a mark on international football. It’s never happened before and it should have.
“I think it is the right thing to do, it was a great thing for me, I asked Harry Kane to present me with the plaque and I hope to do the same for him one day.
“My youngest son has never seen me play for England, so tonight was the first and the last, it will be a great memory for us when the boys are older. It is great for us as a family.
“It’s my opinion that England are in very safe hands from what I’ve seen this week. The way they are being coached is brilliant, it’s a great group of young players who have a bright future.
“They will go close to being the next team to bring a trophy back for England.”
It only took moments for memes to flood Twitter after Donald Trump backtracked on alleged Russian meddling, correcting a sentence in which he had stated that there was no reason why Russia would have interfered in the election.
The presidential U-turn, which he says was a simple case of using the word “would” when he meant “wouldn’t,” was almost immediately mocked online, with memes and jokes aplenty – many of which were posted with the hashtag #wouldorwouldnt.
🎶You say Would
And I say Wouldn't
You say Should
And I say Shouldn't
Would Wouldn't
Should Shouldn't
Let's call the whole thing off. 🎶— Lisa Tozzi (@lisatozzi) July 17, 2018
If you need any further proof that Trump is a six year-old, his only defense over his Helsinki comments is “It’s Opposite Day!”
— Bryan Behar (@bryanbehar) July 17, 2018
Others used it as an excuse to take a jab at Trump with his own favorite phrase – “fake news.”
Basically, Trump called his own words fake news.
— Peter 🍸🍹Suderman (@petersuderman) July 17, 2018
Some also adopted his backtracking skills to say what they think about the president.
I wouldn't consider Trump one of the biggest lying scumbags ever.
Actually, I misspoke.
I WOULD consider Trump one of the biggest lying scumbags ever.
— Brian O'Sullivan (@osullivanauthor) July 17, 2018
Trump’s supporters were also the brunt of a lot of jokes.
The House will not accept anything that blames Trump for anything. Asking the GOP to do anything that might go against their lord & savior is a waste of time. pic.twitter.com/tEqSDN7EY9

And, in a totally predictable move, many found a way to blame Russia for it all.
Trump got mixed up about what he meant to say because the text was badly translated from the original Russian.
— paul bassett davies (@thewritertype) July 17, 2018
In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word would instead of wouldn't. The sentence should have been…'I don't see any reason why Trump WOULDN'T be called a Russian agent.' Sort of a double negative. So you can put that in, and I think that probably clarifies things. pic.twitter.com/BorpcIAdrG
