Naga Munchetty was back on BBC Breakfast today and she was joined by Charlie Stayt and Business Minister Nadhim Xahawi who was on to talk about the furlough scheme and how the government were planning to get people back to work. However, BBC Breakfast viewers slammed the interview today hitting out at the minister for “floundering” when answering Munchetty’s questions.

“There is no point in having people in suspended animation with a false sense that they can continue on furlough infinitely,” Xahawi explained.

“The best way to help people is to ensure we kill the virus and bring people back to work.”

He was interrupted by Munchetty, who remarked: “To be honest, with this suspended animation, it’s not like these people on furlough are sitting at home really pleased they can’t go to work.

“They’re not sitting there enjoying that they are in this suspended animation.”

“They need money for support,” Xahawi added.

“They need the money because they need the jobs because they can’t get back into work.”

Xahawi explained: “Well, first of all we are seeing people coming back to work.

“It’s about 12 percent of people on furlough now instead of the 25 percent it was.”

Munchetty interrupted again: “So, that’s half. That’s half of 25 percent.

Unfortunately, viewers were not impressed with Xahawi’s answers at all and took to Twitter to slam the Minister.

“Zahawi on #BBCBreakfast is yet another train wreck,” one fan tweeted.

Another added: “Great interview from Naga Munchetty @TVNaga01 on BBC Breakfast with @nadhimzahawi.

“His answers were classic “Yes, minister”. Utter nonsense… new politics please, #Renew.”

A third posted: “#bbcbreakfast Does the minister have any idea how this ‘blocking’ technique makes him look?

“He is meant to be explaining and justifying not being the class bully with a grin!”

“@TVNaga01 well spotted, he said we’ve got a deal then he said we’re negotiating a deal – top interviewer keep it up,” added another.

A fifth said: “Totally unsatisfactory interview @TVNaga01 with @nadhimzaha.

“He just fills in the space with preprepared platitudes, and repeats and repeats. She tried her best.”

As Part 1 of Wynonna Earp‘s midseason finale came to a close, Nicole had been drowned and Jeremy was asking a gobsmacked Waverly to trust in what he and Nedley were doing to her partner. So… should she (and we) cut Jeremy some slack?

“I think we should trust Jeremy, and trust Nicole’s posse,” the ex-sheriff’s portrayer, Kat Barrell, told TVLine on Friday evening, in between shooting scenes for Season 4’s very final episodes. “These guys have gone through a lot together, and I can’t see them letting her down. They will definitely try everything they can!”

The drowning is in fact “Plan B” in trying to undo the hex cast on Nicole by Mam Clanton, after Jeremy’s attempt to craft an elixir literally went down the drain. But once the full and wild scope of Jeremy and Nedley’s scheme is detailed, viewers like Waverly may be wondering, “What the frog?!”

Wynonna Earp - Season 4“It’s amazing to watch the gang fight to honor her wishes, because she did ask Jeremy to essentially perform this spell to undo whatever horrible thing that she is obviously hiding from everyone. So we get a bit more information on that,” Barrell previews. And as for Jeremy running this death-defying show, “It’s amazing to see that even though he and Nicole had been parted for so long, and even though there was a lot of hurt there, at the end of the day she still really trusts him, literally, with her life.”

What exactly happens next when the Syfy series’ midseason finale picks up this Sunday at 10/9 “is going to be quite crazy,” Barrell shares. “I will say that we see a whole new ‘side’ of Nicole that is very unexpected. A new version of her, I’ll say.”

Wynonna Earp - Season 4Wynonna and Doc, meanwhile, have unexpectedly run into Rosita Bustillos (returning guest star Tamara Duarte) aka The Woman Scorned in the creepy nuns’ painting. As Wynonna follows through on the plan to trade Rosita for her beloved Peacemaker, Doc — coming out of his old-timey newsreel “reunion” with Wyatt Earp — will consider a bold step in the name of burying a very old axe.

“The cool thing that I love about this next episode is that Doc is trying to let go of the past,” Tim Rozon, who plays Holliday, tells TVLine. “We saw that in Episode 5, when he hears Wyatt talking about Doc and he says, ‘That’s not the way it really went down….’ He’s starting to realize that he’s holding onto the past and he needs to let go, and that starts with someone having to forgive. Doc realizes that fighting just isn’t the way anymore.”

But will the Clanton clan, led by the viciously vengeful Mam and including Sheriff Holt and his sister Cleo among its ranks, see things the same way? Or is there an even more unpredictable threat to Doc’s noble agenda?

One thing is for certain: As all of the above storylines reach major turning points in the midseason finale’s closing scenes, Earpers will in turn experience an array of emotions.

“Me trying to explain what people are going to be going through in the last minutes… It would be impossible to guess,” Rozon says with a chuckle. “Utter joy. Elation. And then at the same time, sadness. And heartbreak. But also happiness and love!

“But pretty much love,” he asserts, “because I think love encompasses all those emotions at one time, sometimes. There’s a lot of love — the good and the bad that comes with it — going on.”

Following the midseason finale, Wynonna Earp will return with Season 4’s second six episodes sometime in 2021.

Utter lunacy? ‘Moonmoon’ naming proposal for moons of moons proves divisive https://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/ https://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 16:08:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/utter-lunacy-moonmoon-naming-proposal-for-moons-of-moons-proves-divisive/

Astronomers think it’s possible that moons can have their own mini-moon – but the scientific suggestion that they should be called ‘moonmoons’ is not going down well among those with a more poetic inclination.

READ MORE: NASA administrator shows off historic spaceship…made of Lego

The term ‘moonmoons’ started with astrophysicist Duncan Forgan, reports ScienceAlert, who has written a paper awaiting publishing on the topic.

More recently, astronomers Juna Kollmeier and Sean Raymond wrote their own paper describing how moonmoons could actually be possible. However, they opted for a slightly less ridiculous, but equally disappointing, name of ‘submoon’.

Twitter users in particular are very displeased at the missed opportunity to name something that is not technically even a thing right now, but very well might be confirmed as a thing in the future.

While ‘moonmoons’ may not actually be the agreed upon term for this speculative phenomenon (we’re guessing that honor goes to the person who actually finds a real-life example), that didn’t stop the Australian House of Representatives throwing shade over the suggestion.

To really throw a spanner in the works, another planetary astronomer, Michele Bannister of Queens University Belfast, told New Scientist that she would tend to opt for a ‘moonmoonlet’, to be precise.

“I think we can say for sure that there’s not a moonmoon that’s kilometers across around Jupiter or Saturn. A moonmoon down to the size of a skyscraper could exist out there, but I’d call it moonmoonlet,” she explained.

‘Utter disgust’ at vile racist slur https://briefnews.eu/utter-disgust-at-vile-racist-slur/ https://briefnews.eu/utter-disgust-at-vile-racist-slur/#respond Tue, 12 Jun 2018 01:37:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/utter-disgust-at-vile-racist-slur/ AFL star Eddie Betts has received support after calling out a social media user for a racist comment directed at the dynamic forward.

The Adelaide Crows icon replied to an Instagram comment referring to him as a “monkey” by saying: “I have no time for this.”

The comments were posted alongside an image of Betts mingling with fans at Optus Stadium on the weekend.

Betts copped the disgusting remark after the Crows suffered a three-point loss to Fremantle in Perth on Sunday.

Co-host of Adelaide radio station FiveAA’s breakfast program David Penberthy slammed the “moron” who wrote the vile slur.

“We just wanted to record our utter disgust this morning at the fact that he has been targeted by a halfwit, a moron, a pig of a person on Instagram,” Penberthy said on Tuesday.

“The bloke (Betts) is an absolute gem. He handles himself with such grace and dignity.”

Unfortunately, it’s not the first time the goalsneak has had to endure racist abuse. Last year a woman was widely condemned for calling Betts an “ape” in a Facebook post and in 2016 a spectator threw a banana at him during a Showdown against local rivals Port Adelaide.

The latest dark chapter in Betts’ experience with racism added insult to injury after the Crows suffered their sixth loss of the year against an understrength Dockers outfit missing Nat Fyfe and Aaron Sandilands.

Adelaide slumped to its third straight defeat after unheralded forward Brennan Cox booted four goals to inspire Fremantle to victory.

Adelaide unleashed a six-goals-to-nil second quarter to take a 12-point lead into halftime.

But Fremantle regained their composure after the main break, with Cox booting 4.0 from 19 disposals to lift his team to the 10.11 (71) to 9.14 (68) win in front of 33,421 fans.

The result left Adelaide (6-6) one game adrift of eighth spot and with a horror month of action ahead.

The Crows take on Hawthorn at the MCG next Saturday then face off against flag fancies West Coast (home), Richmond (MCG) and Geelong (home) after their bye.

Last year’s grand finalists are nursing a horror injury toll, with defender Luke Brown added to the list after he rolled his left ankle on Sunday. The Crows were already without Rory Sloane, Rory Laird, Tom Lynch, Riley Knight, Brad Crouch, Mitch McGovern and Brodie Smith on Sunday.

But coach Don Pyke hasn’t given up hope of getting his team back into contention.

“We’re not going to just sit and take a woe-is-us attitude,” Pyke said. “We’re going to take an attitude of going, ‘Well, we have an obstacle now that is in our way and we need to get past it.’

“We’re lacking a little bit of connection, a bit of synergy, which historically has been there.” Betts (2.6) had a rare off day in front of goal but some of his shots were from difficult angles.

Crows skipper Taylor Walker finished with 1.2 from 11 disposals in his first match back since round eight.

Walker returned one week earlier than expected from his mini pre-season but Pyke said he was comfortable with the decision to bring back the veteran.

“He performed like a guy that has missed three weeks and came back in,” Pyke said of Walker. “But it wasn’t through conditioning, it was the way the game is.”

Fremantle defender Alex Pearce is set for a stint on the sidelines after breaking his thumb.

The incident happened in the second quarter but Pearce bravely played on. Fremantle veteran Michael Walters faces a nervous wait after being reported for headbutting Tom Doedee in the dying minutes.

Replays showed only a slight contact and it’s unlikely to attract a suspension. But Walters’ punch to the gut of Jake Kelly, which occurred just seconds before the headbutt, could cost him a week.

“It wasn’t the action we wanted. Michael would have known that,” Dockers coach Ross Lyon said.

“We’d like him to be a bit fiery but at the right time.”

‘Different shades of utter resignation’: Venezuelans fleeing hardship at home are finding more struggles abroad https://briefnews.eu/different-shades-of-utter-resignation-venezuelans-fleeing-hardship-at-home-are-finding-more-struggles-abroad/ https://briefnews.eu/different-shades-of-utter-resignation-venezuelans-fleeing-hardship-at-home-are-finding-more-struggles-abroad/#respond Wed, 30 May 2018 06:30:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/different-shades-of-utter-resignation-venezuelans-fleeing-hardship-at-home-are-finding-more-struggles-abroad/ FILE PHOTO - A girl stands next to a barbed wire fence as she waits to try to cross the border to Colombia over the Francisco de Paula Santander international bridge in Urena, Venezuela December 18, 2016. Protracted political, economic, and humanitarian crises in Venezuela have spurred mass migration, with Venezuelans from across the social spectrum fleeing for neighboring Brazil and Colombia, to other countries in the region like Chile or Peru, and as far away as the US and Spain.

To escape what they face at home, many Venezuelans endure more hardship abroad, sacrificing their meager savings for transportation to places where, in part because a lack of documentation, they struggle to find work, lodging, and legal status — challenges exacerbated by discrimination and xenophobia.

Geoff Ramsey, the associate for Venezuela at Washington, DC-based research and advocacy group the Washington Office on Latin America, spent April inside Venezuela and on the country’s borders with Brazil and Colombia, meeting with Venezuelans seeking relief from their country’s collapse, government officials trying to deal with the exodus, and others trying to address the situation.

Ramsey spoke with Business Insider in late May, describing the bleak outlook for Venezuelans who are leaving their homes in search of a better life abroad.

The interview below has been edited for length and clarity.

The bulk of the fleeing Venezuelans are going to Colombia

REUTERS/Carlos Eduardo Ramirez

Christopher Woody: Regarding the situation on the border [of Venezuela], can you go into more detail about the conditions you encountered along the Colombian and Brazilian frontiers?

Geoff Ramsey: Yeah, so they’re very different. The bulk of the Venezuelans that are fleeing the country … the ones who can’t afford to travel farther, I should say, are going to Colombia.

Colombian authorities estimate that there are about a million Venezuelans in the country today, and you very much get that sense on the ground. In Cucuta on the border, there are tens of thousands of Venezuelans working in the informal sector, in many cases sleeping in the streets. The government, every night, comes through with trucks, and security forces round up people in the streets who are believed to be Venezuelans and can’t provide identification, and they’re shipped off to the border where they cross the next day.

I think there are real problems with … the Colombian government’s handling of the Venezuelan exodus, because since February they’ve essentially made it impossible for Venezuelans to cross into the country without proper documentation and proof of further travel, and it’s a real problem, because in Venezuela, as I’m sure you know, it’s extremely difficult to access papers. People can’t afford passports because of a combination of the paper shortages and corruption. … While passports should … essentially only cost something like 30 bolivares, if I’m not mistaken, Venezuelans are paying something like $ 800 to $ 1,000 to get access to a passport, so that’s prohibitively expensive for most Venezuelans.

[According to the official Venezuela exchange rate, 30 bolivares is US$ 3, though the currency is worth considerably less at the more frequently used black-market exchange rate, which is now about 995,000 bolivares to the dollar, according to the website DolarToday.]

Across the street an overflowing food pantry, there’s a government-run shelter with capacity for hundreds that stands empty

REUTERS/Carlos Garcia Rawlins

Ramsey: In Cucuta there’s actually only two shelters. There is one that’s being run by the church and another that’s being run by the government in coordination with the Red Cross, and there this really just, I think, twisted dynamic where right across from the government-run shelter, there is a food pantry that serves about a thousand breakfasts every single day to the Venezuelans that have come across the border … and it’s flooded.

There are just every single day about 1,000, or I would say over 1,000, Venezuelans flooding into this food kitchen and into the streets, and the church people who run it are forced to close the doors and feed whoever they can, and right across the street you have the government shelter, [to] which … they only allow entry for Venezuelans who have their documents in order, and of course that’s very few Venezuelans.

So you have this dynamic where there’s right across the street from this overflowing food pantry or … essentially a shelter, you have the government-run shelter that has capacity for 300 or 400 people and is, on any given day, almost assuredly empty. When I was there there were two people in it. So there’s shelves stocked full of food. There’s bunks, shower facilities, and it’s all completely just unused, and that’s just because the Colombian government has adopted these measures that have, without actually saying so, closed the border to Venezuelans who are crossing without their passports.

“He was saying that these indigenous Venezuelans that are crossing into Brazil are locusts”

REUTERS/Nacho Doce

Ramsey: … The response of the federal government in Brazil has been entirely led by the military, and on one hand that’s good because the military has a reliable logistical capacity. They can move large quantities of aid, but it’s also problematic because the government has tasked the military with providing security at the various shelters that operate on the border, and these are soldiers. These are not people that have much experience in providing direct humanitarian aid, and you see it on the ground.

When I went to the indigenous shelter in Pacaraima, which is directly on the Venezuelan border, I was taught a new word in Portuguese by the captain in charge of the shelter that I spoke with. … He was telling me that he thinks that these Venezuelans, these indigenous Venezuelans who are crossing the border, are “gafanhotos.” And I was asking what that meant, and he was saying, “Oh, they’re coming, and they’re eating, and they’re moving on.” And I was like, “Oh, so you mean they’re like … their tribe is nomadic, related to their customs?”

And he was like, “No, no,” and he put it into his phone on Google Translate, and he showed me that “gafanhoto” actually means “locust,” and he was saying that these indigenous Venezuelans that are crossing into Brazil are locusts, because he thinks that they’re using up state resources and don’t have any intentions for providing for themselves, and I think that really pairs with reports that I’ve heard from our partners of open discrimination from the military and a refusal to recognize local traditions in the indigenous shelters and a lack of respect for indigenous authorities in these shelters.

I think it’s sort of an underreported aspect of the Brazilian response to the crisis, and one that I try to just put a pin in for everybody, because in many ways Brazil deserves praise for what it’s doing, but there’s problems there as well.

Here’s a soul-crushing example of Trump’s utter lack of economic literacy https://briefnews.eu/heres-a-soul-crushing-example-of-trumps-utter-lack-of-economic-literacy/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-a-soul-crushing-example-of-trumps-utter-lack-of-economic-literacy/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2017 00:01:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-a-soul-crushing-example-of-trumps-utter-lack-of-economic-literacy/ Donald Trump reading readsREUTERS/Daron Dean

The full transcript of Donald Trump’s Wall Street Journal interview, which leaked to Politico, is enough to make anyone spiral into despair—like most performances from our president, it’s full of moments that illustrate his tenuous grasp of reality.

As Slate’s official economics correspondent, though, there was one section that left me especially crestfallen—in just one short paragraph of word salad, he delivers a subtle but telling demonstration of his total ignorance on how economies work.

Here’s the passage. Trump is trying to explain that he thinks the United States is growing too slowly compared with the rest of the world, and therefore we need to cut our corporate tax rate to 15 percent. I’ve bolded the key part.

So I’ll call, like, major—major countries, and I’ll be dealing with the prime minister or the president. And I’ll say, how are you doing? Oh, don’t know, don’t know, not well, Mr. President, not well. I said, well, what’s the problem? Oh, GDP 9 percent, not well. And I’m saying to myself, here we are at like 1 percent, dying, and they’re at 9 percent and they’re unhappy. So, you know, and these are like countries, you know, fairly large, like 300 million people. You know, a lot of people say—they say, well, but the United States is large. And then you call places like Malaysia, Indonesia, and you say, you know, how many people do you have? And it’s pretty amazing how many people they have. So China’s going to be at 7 or 8 percent, and they have a billion-five, right? So we should do really well.

But in order to do that – you know, it’s tax reform, but it’s a big tax cut. But it’s simplification, it’s reform, and it’s a big tax cut, 15 –

At some point, it appears Donald Trump heard somebody say that the United States cannot grow as fast as China or Malaysia because we have a “large” economy. No doubt, what they meant is that the U.S. is a highly developed, rich nation and therefore can’t expand as quickly as developing countries that can still reap large gains from taking basic steps to improve their living standards.

But Trump did not understand it that way. He apparently thought that when whoever he was listening to said “large,” they were talking about population. Therefore, in his mind, if China grows at nearly 7 percent per year with its 1.4 billion people, the U.S. should be able to do it too.

This is the man who millions of voters are relying on to bring back jobs. Bottoms up.

Monster carcass origins cause utter confusion in Indonesia (VIDEO & PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/monster-carcass-origins-cause-utter-confusion-in-indonesia-video-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/monster-carcass-origins-cause-utter-confusion-in-indonesia-video-photos/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 17:01:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/monster-carcass-origins-cause-utter-confusion-in-indonesia-video-photos/

Is it a giant squid or a regular sized whale? That’s the question causing considerable confusion for investigators examining an enormous 22-meter (71ft) carcass which washed up on the shores of Huamual in Indonesia.

The rotten carcass has attracted a crowd eager to debate what the mysterious carcass is – with squid and whale emerging as the front runners.

One brave man got close enough to the remains to film. Patasiwa Kumbang Amalatu posted to Facebook that he believes the remains are those of a massive whale.

Others posting images of the carcass online believe it to be a squid but, given how badly decomposed the animal is, it’s difficult to identify.

“We will take the meat samples to be tested in the laboratory. This is to ascertain what type of animal it is,” M Nasrul Latulanit from the Office of Marine and Coastal Resources Management told Kompas.

The investigator believes the creature to be a whale, saying it was far too big to be a squid, which usually grow to around five meters, much shorter than the carcass.

What do you think. Whale? Squid? Or something entirely different?

‘Utter nonsense’: Kremlin denies reports of Blackwater founder helping establish Putin-Trump ties https://briefnews.eu/utter-nonsense-kremlin-denies-reports-of-blackwater-founder-helping-establish-putin-trump-ties/ https://briefnews.eu/utter-nonsense-kremlin-denies-reports-of-blackwater-founder-helping-establish-putin-trump-ties/#respond Wed, 05 Apr 2017 02:42:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/utter-nonsense-kremlin-denies-reports-of-blackwater-founder-helping-establish-putin-trump-ties/ Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed a Washington Post report claiming that the Blackwater founder held a secret meeting to establish a backchannel for communications between Moscow and Donald Trump’s administration.

“This is complete nonsense,” Peskov said on Tuesday after posed with a question by a reporter.

Earlier Monday, the Washington Post reported, citing unnamed US, European and Arab officials, that the UAE in January arranged secret talks between Erik Prince, the founder of notorious private US military firm Blackwater, and “a Russian close to President Vladimir Putin.”

According to the paper, the meeting at the Seychelles was organized to establish a “back-channel line of communication” between the Russian government and the administration of President Trump.

The White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, has rejected the report, calling it “a bunch of flimsy pieces of information all tied together.”

Spicer pointed out that Prince had no role in Trump’s campaign or his transition when the alleged meeting took place on January 11, with this fact not being contested by Washington Post.

The paper “can’t identify the other individuals” except the Blackwater founder, who participated in the talks, he added.

“Apparently, he [Prince] knows somebody, who knew somebody, who knew a guy in the UAE, who also knew a guy in Russia,” Spicer said, describing the article.

He also added that the authorities at the Seychelles said that they have no records of such meeting taking place and even of Prince visiting the islands.

Spicer believes the paper linked the Blackwater founder to the story only due to the fact that his sister, Betsy DeVos, was on the Trump team as Education Secretary.

When the journalist asked the White House spokesman to acknowledge that the Washington Post report may be potentially problematic for the Trump administration, he categorically replied: “No.”

Reports about the alleged “Russia ties” of the Trump administration have been consistently used by Trump’s Democratic Party opponents, who also allege that Russia-backed hackers got into the Democratic National Committee (DNC) email server to influence the election in favor of the Republicans. None of the allegations of Moscow’s involvement in the 2016 US presidential elections or those of Trump having an established connection with Vladimir Putin’s government have so far been backed by evidence.
