Republican Sen. Mike Lee holds a narrow lead over independent candidate Evan McMullin in the Utah Senate race, in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive statewide races in recent memory in the longtime GOP stronghold.
In the latest Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll — among registered voters — Lee earned the support of 36% of respondents, while 34% backed McMullin and 13% opted for another candidate. Per the polling results, 16% of respondents also indicated that they were undecided.
Among likely voters, the race remains largely unchanged, with Lee leading McMullin 37% to 34%, with 16% of respondents stating that they were undecided.
The poll surveyed 815 registered voters from Sept. 3 through Sept. 21 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.43 percentage points.
Jason Perry, the director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, told Deseret News that the polling indicated that a swath of moderates — who are still not sold on giving Lee a third term in Washington, DC — are the key to the incumbent winning in November and are also critical to McMullin if he is to upset the Republican lawmaker.
"Mike Lee continues to be in the driver's seat, but the most interesting aspect of this poll is who the undecided voters are — moderates and liberals," Perry told the publication. "Mike Lee needs some of the moderates and Evan McMullin needs all the moderates and liberals he can convince, but those groups are in a quandary."
Utah Democrats in April threw their support behind McMullin in the November contest, in turn passing over a nominee from their own party. In endorsing McMullin, Democrats lined up behind a former CIA officer who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2016, but performed strongly in the Beehive State — winning 22% of the statewide vote and holding Donald Trump below 50% of the vote in one of the most Republican states in the country.
While Lee overwhelmingly votes in line with most Republican senators, McMullin told NBC News in July that he wouldn't caucus with either major party should he be elected to office this fall.
And while Republican candidates generally enjoy a healthy financial advantage in Utah, McMullin has been able to remain competitive with the incumbent.
According to OpenSecrets, Lee has raised $ 7.9 million and had nearly $ 2.5 million in cash on hand, while McMullin has taken in over $ 3.2 million and had nearly $ 1.3 million in cash on hand.
In the last Deseret News/Hinckley poll — which was conducted in July — Lee held a 41%-36% lead over McMullin.
The latest results show some erosion in support for the senator, as there has since been an increase in the number of voters who are undecided.

Utah is experiencing a number of climate-related challenges, including the shrinking and drying up of the Great Salt Lake, diminishing water supplies, extreme temperatures, and worsening air quality due to wildfires. This has inspired city officials and other stakeholders to come together to seek solutions.

"Necessity spurs innovation, and I think we're definitely at that point," Josh Craft, government and corporate relations manager at Utah Clean Energy, a Salt Lake City nonprofit working to accelerate clean energy and climate solutions in the state, told Insider.
To inspire climate-centric innovation, the organization helps facilitate the Utah Climate Action Network. The partnership was founded in 2016 between Salt Lake City, the University of Utah, the business community, faith organizations, and other groups, to foster a collaborative response to climate change. "We assist those partners in bringing together doers and experts from across disciplines to work on questions around climate and how it impacts our communities," Craft said.
The network ensures that no one is "reinventing the wheel," Craft said. "We're learning and able to copy each other's best practices." Partners, including local governments, nonprofits, and higher education institutions, are working on innovations and technology, like tracking water consumption and sharing the data on usage to drive conservation efforts.
Here's a look at how the network is fostering partnerships to address climate change in Utah.
Salt Lake City's Climate Positive 2040 plan outlines long-term climate and energy goals, including achieving 100% renewable energy for community electricity supply by 2032 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2040.
To make progress toward these goals, the city approved a large-scale renewable project to meet its electricity needs in 2020. It also broke ground on the Elektron Solar Project, a new 80-megawatt solar farm that's the city's largest renewable energy project to date.
Last year, Salt Lake City adopted the Electrified Transportation Resolution to expand electric vehicle use among the city's fleet, develop charging infrastructure, and work with community partners to electrify public transit and rideshare vehicles. An update to city regulations requiring charging infrastructure on new multifamily building developments was also proposed but hasn't yet been adopted.
To spread the word about sustainability plans, Salt Lake City also partnered with Path to Positive Utah, Utah Clean Energy, and the Utah Climate Action Network on a training program to educate and empower climate leaders across sectors in the city.
The network helps city leaders and climate experts "incubate and share knowledge quickly," Craft said. "We're facing some pretty significant climate changes. We'll have to develop techniques and deploy technology to do things better than we have in the past."
To address climate issues in Utah and help municipalities like Salt Lake City achieve sustainability goals, Craft said collaboration between state and local governments, the private sector, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and higher education is a must.
The Utah Climate Action Network hosts quarterly meetings for groups working on climate issues — like renewable energy and electric vehicles — to discuss ideas and projects and find new ways to collaborate.
"Having somewhere you can go to ask for ideas, get expertise, and get responses has been helpful to keep innovative ideas alive," Craft said.
Another project hosted by the network is the annual Utah Climate Week, a series of events around the state that bring together dozens of communities across Utah that have adopted climate commitments, researchers, nonprofits, and faith-based groups. This year's event will be held from September 25 to October 1.
Since the network's founding, Craft said he's seen local climate-related expertise grow and more groups are willing to discuss sustainability issues.
"It's a multidisciplinary effort that requires all hands on deck," he said. "Knowing that there's a safe space to talk about climate concerns in a nonpolitical environment is really important, and it's helped build awareness and trust around these issues."
Utah Clean Energy also helped facilitate the Climate and Clean Air Compact, a directive created in 2020 and signed by nearly 200 of the state's most prominent leaders expressing their commitment to climate and clean air actions.
"We're trying to connect with business community leaders to have good faith, positive discussions around climate change, environmental stewardship, and solutions," Craft said. "The mission is to ensure Utah becomes one of the leading states, at least among conservative states, on climate solutions."
The organization also worked closely with Salt Lake City on implementing the Utah Community Renewable Energy Act, a 2019 bill that created a path for the communities served by the electric utility company Rocky Mountain Power to collaborate on a renewable energy program. As of May 2022, 18 communities and counties joined together to launch a net-100% renewable energy option in their communities, which comprises around 25% of Rocky Mountain Power's sales in Utah.
The new Inflation Reduction Act will provide billions of dollars in tax credits, rebates, grants, and loans for projects that will reduce emissions. The Utah Climate Action Network will be a "guiding resource" on the new national investments to ensure local governments, nonprofits, universities, and other organizations take advantage of the funding available to implement clean energy projects, Craft said.
"This is what you have a network for — to build capacity," he said. "We see ourselves as folks who can understand these laws and opportunities, identify them, and find partners with good ideas to go and do."

Over the past 20 years, Troy D'Ambrosio, executive director of the University of Utah's Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, has helped Salt Lake City's entrepreneur community flourish. He leads programs for students at the university that fosters a culture of innovation and supports the next generation of startup founders.

The institute he works for, which was founded in 2001, is part of the university's David Eccles School of Business. It offers programs for high school students, undergraduates, and graduate students, and also just launched a new program for alumni. US News and World Report ranks it as one of the top 10 entrepreneurship schools in the nation.

"We've seen how much interest there is from entrepreneurs and where we thought we could fill in the gaps" to be a resource for them, D'Ambrosio, who's also an assistant dean at the business school, told Insider.
Salt Lake City's entrepreneur community is "amazing, robust, creative, and continues to grow," he said. "It's becoming part of our DNA. Entrepreneurship is what people want to do in the future. They're really interested in entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation."
As a Salt Lake City native and University of Utah alum, D'Ambrosio said he's seeing entrepreneurship and innovation being used to solve problems around climate change, health care, and transportation. So far Lassonde has helped students launch more than 2,700 startups and raise more than $ 700 million in funding, including venture capital. These include the medical device LERC Medical, an addiction-recovery mobile app called Relay, and Kroy Railway Group, a company helping mitigate railroad safety issues.
Here's a look at how Lassonde is supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in students.
This month, the institute launched Lassonde for Life, a new program open to University of Utah alumni who completed any degree in any major and now want to start or grow their business. The program is free and offered online so alumni can participate from anywhere.
"We have a number of alumni who have been really successful who are always coming back saying, 'You made an impact on my life while I was there. How can I give back now?'" D'Ambrosio said. Alumni also often get in touch to ask about resources for starting a business.
The program pairs these two groups. It will feature a series of workshops during the 2022-23 academic year that are hosted by successful alumni on topics like launching an e-commerce business, prototyping new products, conducting market research, and navigating legal issues for startups.
D'Ambrosio said the first program will help the institute learn more about which programs to offer, how often, and the best format to deliver the content going forward.
In January 2023, the business school will expand its master of business creation (MBC) degree online, which will enable anyone from around the world to enroll. It'll focus on "the founder's startup, applied curriculum, personalized mentorship, substantial scholarships, peer support and discussion, access to $ 5 million in startup funding, and more," according to an announcement about the program.
The online MBC is part-time with a flexible schedule that's completed in 14 months instead of the nine-month full-time program, which is in-person only. It will feature video content and live virtual group meetings. Every student is assigned a coach, who they'll meet with regularly one-on-one.
"We created the online program because we had so many people apply for the in-resident program who either couldn't physically be in Utah or Salt Lake or because of economic circumstances, they're still working a day job, they have children they're taking care of, or they couldn't participate in as intense of a program as in-resident," D'Ambrosio said.
Students in the online program will have 60% of their costs covered by scholarships and will pay around $ 15,000 out of pocket. Next, D'Ambrosio said they plan to launch region-specific online MBC programs in Africa and Europe.
The institute provides many other initiatives, programs, and resources to support the next generation of entrepreneurs. Its Lassonde Studios is a 400-person residential community and innovation facility on campus for University of Utah students to create and launch ideas. It features a 20,000-square-foot innovation space with 3D printers, laser cutters, and office space.
Courtesy of Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute
"It's become this gathering place, a community where entrepreneurs go," D'Ambrosio said. "It's a unique place where people can find each other on campus and work together."
Students also help commercialize ideas created by other university departments by translating them into real products. D'Ambrosio said they've helped around 70 technologies developed at the university raise startup capital and enter the market, including Peel Therapeutics, a biotech company developing cancer and inflammatory disease medications that recently kicked off its clinical trials.
"We're using that intellectual property on campus as a tool to teach technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and capital raising," D'Ambrosio said.
The institute also runs the High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge (HSUEC), which is open to all Utah high school students, who can win prize money and scholarships based on their ideas. Another program, the Lassonde Founders Program, is a cohort of incoming freshmen at the university who have started companies. The students receive housing at Lassonde Studios, a scholarship, and access to resources and a community to develop their businesses.
"The really interesting thing for us is these young people teach us about the new trends and new technologies and stuff out there," D'Ambrosio said. "They're educating us as much as we're educating them."
Working with students and creating a place where they can develop their ideas and get them out into the world is what D'Ambrosio loves about his role.
"When a student walks into your office and says, 'I have this idea,' and I get to say, 'I can help you,' it's the coolest job ever," he said.

Two teenage boys have been arrested after stealing an airplane from a private airstrip in rural Utah.
For rebellious teens across America, ‘borrowing’ someone else’s car for a short ride is something of a right of passage – but two Utah teens took the joyride to new heights, stealing an airplane from a private airstrip and taking to the skies.
The 14 and 15 year old boys had recently left a group home and were staying with friends in the area, according to the Uintah County sheriff’s office. In order to get to the airstrip, the boys first acquisitioned a tractor, which somehow didn’t attract enough attention to thwart the efforts of the determined pair.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Nov. 22, 2018, two teenage boys were arrested near the Vernal Regional Airport after landing a small plane they had stolen from from a private airstrip in Jensen, Uintah County.
— Uintah Sheriff (@uintahsheriff) November 22, 2018
After stealing the small single-engine Cessna, the boys flew around 15 miles along highway 40 before making a successful landing at Vernal Regional Airport. How they managed to start, fly and land the plane without incident, remains a mystery. Both are now in custody at the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center. The courts would be advised to consider the two a flight risk.

North Ogden city mayor Major Brent Taylor was deployed to Afghanistan with the Utah National Guard at the beginning of this year. Taylor’s trip to Afghanistan was the fourth such deployment for the father of seven and was due to last one year.
Instead, Taylor was gunned down in an “apparent insider attack” in Kabul on Saturday. The gunman was reportedly a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces – whom Taylor was deployed to train and advise. The gunman managed to wound another US service member, before other Afghan forces killed him.

Taylor’s death was mourned by Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, who wrote that the Afghan war “has once again cost us the best blood of a generation.”
I hate this. I’m struggling for words. I love Mayor Taylor, his amazing wife Jennie and his 7 sweet kids. Utah weeps for them today. This war has once again cost us the best blood of a generation. We must rally around his family. Thank you for your sacrifice my friend. 🇺🇸💔 https://t.co/uS9emZgv7s

His death was the latest in a series of so-called insider attacks – killings carried out by members of Afghan forces trained by US and Coalition troops. It came less than two weeks after a NATO soldier was killed in another suspected insider attack in western Herat province. Another such incident occurred in Logar province on September 3. Insider attacks have been a consistent threat in the conflict’s recent years, claiming dozens of lives at their peak in 2010-2012.
The attacks are emblematic of a war that shows no signs of reaching a conclusion. American and NATO troops have been present in Afghanistan since 2001 and over 2,200 US troops have been killed there in that time frame. Despite major combat operations being halted in 2014, the NATO contingent is still present in the country and there is no clear deadline for the forces’ withdrawal.
Meanwhile, the Taliban has proven a resilient enemy. As well as being able to position infiltrators within regular Afghan units, the terror group has expanded its presence in recent months and now controls or influences just over half of the country’s 407 districts, according to US military estimates. On Sunday, the Taliban seized another Afghan base in central Uruzgan province.
The threat from the Taliban is compounded by the presence of Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) terrorist group, made up of mostly Pakistani Talibs who have pledged loyalty to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), and by Al-Qaeda operatives.
Afghanistan’s Air Force stepped up its own bombing campaign against the Taliban this year, with Coalition support, but despite dropping tons of US-made ordnance on the Taliban, casualties among Afghan ground forces have skyrocketed in recent months, with the country’s military suffering 1,000 fatalities in August and September, according to Pentagon figures.
Against this grim backdrop, Gen Austin Scott Miller, the newly-minted head of US and NATO operations in Afghanistan, admitted last week that the war against the Taliban “is not going to be won militarily,” but would require a “political solution.”
Less than two weeks before this proclamation, Miller himself narrowly avoided death when a teenage Taliban infiltrator shot a police chief dead in Kandahar province as the two men left a meeting at a local governor’s office.
Miller’s words signal a change to expectations in Washington. Earlier this year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told US troops in Afghanistan that the Taliban “cannot wait us out,” and that they “will ultimately have to settle their differences with the Afghan government at the negotiating table.”
In August, a State Department official said that the US was doing “everything we can” to bring the Taliban and the Afghan government to the table.
Meanwhile, the Taliban has no interest in negotiating any kind of peace deal with the US involved. In a rare interview, Mullah Tofan, a Taliban warlord, told RT that his group “is not in the hands of Americans” and Taliban leaders would “never give permission to any Taliban members to negotiate” with America.

It was one of those rare moments of bipartisanship: Then-Vice President Joe Biden visited the red state of Utah about a year ago and met with the enormously effective Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch and former Republican Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr. to discuss the C-word. Huntsman noted that “politics had been put aside” in support of Biden’s initiative to cure cancer — dubbed the “cancer moonshot.” But while those big-name politicos garnered the bulk of the press coverage, the person Biden may have paid the most attention to at that visit came from outside the political sphere: Mary Beckerle, the 62-year-old who leads the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
On a snowy day in the Beehive State, a bubbly and vivacious Beckerle meets with OZY inside her lab, where beakers line the shelf and a photo of her and Biden is posted in the corner. The CEO and director of the HCI — which includes a cancer hospital and research facilities with more than 1,800 employees — has ditched her lab coat for a bright red jacket. The outfit change deceives, though. Beckerle is deadly serious as she discusses her studies of Ewing’s sarcoma, a pediatric bone cancer; in a typical year, she publishes multiple pieces of research. Her body of work includes a breakthrough discovery on how Ewing’s sarcoma cancer cells spread. “Dr. Beckerle is the envy of every cancer center in the world, and we are very fortunate to have her at the helm of Huntsman Cancer Institute,” Jon Huntsman Sr. told OZY in a statement.
From fighting cancer to changing the culture on domestic violence — we’re just getting started. Join us: https://t.co/QHaFokMnrZ
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) February 1, 2017
Beckerle helped set Biden’s agenda to try and cure cancer, in part by serving on a 28-person panel that advised him on the direction of his program. Just before Barack Obama’s administration ended, the 21st Century Cures Act passed — with some political grit and elbowing by Biden that ultimately led to a cancer research provision for $ 1.8 billion. “There was major momentum and we want to make sure there’s support in the White House,” says Jon Retzlaff, a managing director of Science Policy at the American Association for Cancer Research.
That was last year, though; the future of cancer research is more uncertain today. Retzlaff is looking ahead to the impending budget proposal from President Donald Trump’s administration, due in April, to see how the new president intends to support funding for cancer research after his promises to other sectors, like infrastructure and border security. Biden recently said he “prays” that Trump will continue to support the cancer moonshot, while Beckerle’s “hopeful” that research in this area (much funding for the HCI comes through the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health, both dependent on federal dollars) will remain a bipartisan issue — the war on cancer, after all, took off under Richard Nixon. Even with so much up in the air, Beckerle plans to have her research make its way into treatment before she retires.
No buildings existed yet, but the HCI wanted Beckerle to serve as one of its first members — a desire helped by millions of dollars in pledged funding.
Beckerle grew up as one of three sisters in River Edge, New Jersey, where her childhood was cut short by the death of her father when he was only 36. She was 12. Her mother supported the girls, taking night shifts as a nurse. Beckerle, who swam in the mornings and dipped into biology class, eventually graduated from college with a mix of courses in philosophy, psychology and biology before working in a lab. She debated about pursuing a career in medicine or in science, and settled on science after a stint at UT Southwestern, where she learned the art of doing science and its similarity to cooking. A couple degrees later, during which time she published in prominent journals, she interviewed at, then chose, the University of Utah. Mario Capecchi — now a Nobel Prize winner — recruited her, she says.
A decade later, in the 1990s, Beckerle says she was recruited for a chair position at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. But when the founder of HCI heard she was interested in leaving Utah, he rang her up. No buildings existed yet, but the HCI wanted Beckerle to serve as one of its first members — a desire helped by millions of dollars in pledged funding. In the end, Beckerle chose to stay, and to this day, no other NCI-designated cancer centers exist in Utah or in the bordering states of Nevada, Idaho or Wyoming.
Still, a cure to cancer may remain elusive. Billions of dollars have already gone into researching it each year; around 1.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year, and more than 500,000 died from it — ranking the disease among the top two causes of death in the U.S. The problem is also understood to be more complex these days, given that cancer is recognized to be of various types.
Yet Beckerle remains bullish on a possible solution. “Because [cancer] touches everyone, it’s one of the areas we have had really, really effective bipartisan collaboration,” she says. “No matter if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, a socialist — everyone is touched by cancer.”

A Utah man flew a small aircraft into his own house, kamikaze-style, hours after he had been arrested for assaulting his wife during an argument, police say.
Duane Youd, 47, died in the crash, as the light-skinned Cessna disintegrated on impact and burst into flames. Youd’s wife and a child, both inside the house, survived and the house remained intact.
Youd had been arrested by police in Payson, Utah, earlier on Sunday, after witnesses reported seeing him assault his wife. The troubled couple had been drinking and had gone to a scenic local spot to talk their problems through, Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office said.
After being booked on suspicion of domestic violence and released on bail, Youd was escorted home by an officer. From there, he set off for nearby Spanish Fork-Springville Airport, commandeered a plane and took off for home.
Dodging power lines and other houses, Youd plowed the plane into the front of his house at 2.30 am. Photos taken at the scene showed Youd’s front yard strewn with smoldering wreckage and the house charred and damaged from the fireball.
Investigators said that Youd was a skilled pilot and that the twin-engine Cessna 525 belonged to his employer. They don’t know if Youd was allowed to access the plane.
The 47-year-old had a turbulent marriage, and was charged with disorderly conduct after a domestic violence incident in April. Youd and his wife had agreed to attend six months of marriage counselling as part of a plea agreement.
Youd’s suicidal deathcharge was the second such incident in recent days. An airport employee who described himself as a “broken guy with a few screws loose,”stole a turboprop airplane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday night, casually chatted to ground control staff as he performed aerobatic stunts, and eventually slammed the aircraft into woodland near Seattle.
Before plunging to his death, 29-year-old Richard Russell told controllers that that he’d learned to fly by playing video games, but added that he “wasn’t really planning on landing it.”
