Snapchat has discovered a way to leverage the power of iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera — and that means you’ll have access to exclusive Lenses if you use Apple’s all-screen mobile device. Starting today, you’ll see TrueDepth-enabled Lenses appear periodically within the Snapchat carousel on iPhone X. They’re AR masks that follow your face around like the app’s many other Lenses, but due to the way TrueDepth works, they can look more realistic and just all around better.
See, Apple’s TrueDepth technology for the X’s selfie camera projects 30,000 infrared dots onto your face. It powers the device’s secure facial recognition system and makes it possible to turn your facial expressions into Animojis. Snap says TrueDepth allows even the smallest details and 3D objects in the Lenses to follow your face’s movements, making masks look more realistic than they usually are. Those 3D objects can also reflect and react to ambient lighting, producing shadows and highlights that follow the contours of your face and the surroundings. Finally, Apple’s technology gives the Lenses more accurate depth detection, which leads to better background blurs, among other style elements.
This isn’t the first time the ephemeral messaging app is using a phone’s capabilities to its advantage. Late last year, it allowed users with ARKit-enabled devices to superimpose Jeff Koons’ giant balloon installations onto specific places in the real world. We’ll probably see more Lenses like these in the future, as Snap works to recapture any user it might have lost due to its pretty unpopular redesign.

The NFL Draft is still nearly two months away, but it’s shaping up to be a hectic race for the game’s most crucial position.
As we’ve seen in recent years, no matter how many elite players at other positions there are, teams tend to scramble for the top quarterbacks in the draft.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

While most everybody’s eyes were glued on the happenings at GDC 2018 this week, the rest of the business world quietly continued turning. Google offered $ 40 million for the Lytro camera company, DJI constructed a legion of drones for a construction crew, 2 million Spotify users nixed the ads on their free service and the President decided to start a trade war with China. Numbers, because how else will you figure out how much more your electronics and appliances will cost?

2 million users: Spotify’s free tier typically pays for itself through advertising. That’s good for the company but not something many of its users want to sit through. As such, some 2 million people have taken to using hacked versions of the streaming music app which not only does away with the ads but also grants perks found on higher, paid tiers. Too bad that’s not going to last for much longer.

30 to 40 percent: The battery array that Tesla installed in Southern Australia might be working a little too well. According to the company, it’s being severely underpaid for the electricity that it’s providing to the Aussie grid because the current regulations were designed with older, slower fossil fuel-derived power sources.

$ 1.5 billion: Who says physical media is dead? Certainly not the RIAA. The recording industry reports that while CD and vinyl sales have dropped 4 percent since 2012 to $ 1.5 billion, digital downloads have fallen even further, slumping 25 percent over the same period to $ 1.3 billion. So maybe don’t toss that old record player just yet.

57 billion friendships: Facebook’s week was not a good one, what with all the Cambridge Analytica revelations and whatnot. Surprisingly, not even Zuckerberg’s disingenuous non-apology apology was enough to assuage the public’s outrage. But c’mon people, are we really that surprised that the dude who allegedly stole the idea from his college buddies would also be totally ok pulling shenanigans like this?

1,000 drones: Do you want Skynet? Because this is how we get Skynet. Despite being on the outs with the US military, DJI is still finding plenty of work in the private sector. The company announced this week that it will be selling 1,000 custom Matrice 100 drones to Japanese equipment manufacturer Komatsu in what is being billed as the largest commercial drone sale in history.

$ 40 million: Lytro has fallen on hard times since it debuted its revolutionary $ 400 light field camera back in 2012. As the company has sputtered and employees have moved on to greener pastures, Google has reportedly swooped in to snatch up the company’s technology patents for a cool 40 mil. Can’t wait to see that in my next Pixel phone.

$ 60 billion: Donald Trump, master dealmaker, signed an executive memorandum this week to enact tariffs on up to $ 60 billion worth of imports from China. That includes a number of products in the tech sector, which means that your next iPhone will cost you not only an arm and a leg but likely a kidney too.

Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were big winners at fall festivals (the former at Venice, the latter in Toronto), yet came away empty-handed from last week’s Gotham Awards and New York Film Critics Circle honors. But they both made quite a bit of noise in L.A. – Shape won Best Actress (for Sally Hawkins) and Best Cinematography (for Dan Laustsen), while del Toro tied with Luca Guadagnino for Call Me by Your Name. (Name won Best Picture; The Florida Project took the runner-up slot.) Shape’s Alexandre Desplat was also runner-up for Best Score.
And while Three Billboards didn’t win any of the L.A. critics’ prizes, it was runner-up for Best Actress (Frances McDormand), Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell), and Best Screenplay (McDonagh). Lady Bird, a big winner in New York, made less noise on the west coast, with nods only for Laurie Metcalf’s supporting performance and a “New Generation” award for first-time solo director Greta Gerwig.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer and close confidant, is downplaying the controversy surrounding his involvement with a Russian-born businessman to secure a Trump Tower deal in Moscow and his contact with a top Kremlin official at the height of the presidential election.
Cohen was in touch with the businessman, Felix Sater, in late 2015, when Trump was a candidate.
The two men exchanged a series of emails in November 2015 in which they geared up to celebrate the Moscow deal, as well as Trump’s election victory, which would come a year later. In the emails, which were obtained by The New York Times, Sater bragged about his relationship with Putin and told Cohen that he would “get all of Putins team to buy in” on the Trump Tower Moscow deal.
“Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,” Sater wrote, according to The Times. “I will get Putin on this program and we will get Donald elected.”
But in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Wednesday, Cohen said the proposal from Sater was “business as usual and nothing more … just another project, another licensing deal.” He added that he had “really wanted to see this building go up, because the economics were fantastic.”
Sater told Talking Points Memo in August that his “last Moscow deal for the Trump Organization was in October of 2015” but that it “didn’t go through because obviously he became president.”
“Once the campaign was really going-going, it was obvious there were going to be no deals internationally,” Sater said. “We were still working on it, doing something with it, November-December.”
Cohen also addressed the recent firestorm around revelations that he was in contact with Dmitry Peskov, a top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, about pushing the Trump Tower Moscow deal through.
“Over the past few months I have been working with a company based in Russia regarding the development of a Trump Tower-Moscow project in Moscow City,” Cohen wrote to Peskov, according to The Washington Post. “Without getting into lengthy specifics the communication between our two sides has stalled.”
Cohen continued: “As this project is too important, I am hereby requesting your assistance. I respectfully request someone, preferably you, contact me so that I might discuss the specifics as well as arranging meetings with the appropriate individuals. I thank you in advance for your assistance and look forward to hearing from you soon.”
Cohen explained during the Vanity Fair interview, “I said, let me email him and I’m going to see whether or not this is legitimate, that they’re aware of it with the land acquisition … I typed in ‘Kremlin’ into Google and there’s a phone number that’s there and underneath it, there’s an email address for info@kremlin.ru or whatever it is.”
The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman confirmed last week that Cohen emailed Peskov at a general email and not his personal one.
Vanity Fair reported that Peskov confirmed to Cohen that he had received the initial email but did not otherwise respond.
“There is nothing, no contact between me and any Russian officials except sending one email to a general inbox and it went unresponded,” Cohen said. “I was a little disappointed that it went unresponded.”
Cohen is under scrutiny from the congressional intelligence committees as they investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. His emails with Sater and Peskov will also likely be of interest to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is spearheading the FBI’s probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the election in Trump’s favor.

It was a fairly uneventful week for the tech industry. Apple continued its quest to know everything about its customers. The FDA finally approved a genetic therapy for the first time Lyft spread its operation to 32 more states. And Juicero, purveyors of a $ 400 juice maker, shut down completely. Numbers, because how else will you know you’ve overpaid for a proprietary bag squeezer?

In April 2016, as Donald Trump was on the cusp of clinching the Republican nomination for the White House, he sold two luxury condos near Manhattan’s Central Park for less than half the price his company had said they were worth. The lucky buyer: Trump’s son, Eric.
Such family-friendly deals would normally incur hundreds of thousands of dollars in gift taxes.
But in this case, Trump appears unlikely to have been on the hook for anywhere near that, thanks to benefits only available to real estate developers.
Eric Trump bought the two condos on the two top floors of the Trump Parc East building at 100 Central Park South for $ 350,000 each. Trump Organization filings show that, as of February 2016 — two months before Trump sold the apartments to Eric — the condos were priced at $ 790,000 and $ 800,000. A similar one-bedroom condo on a lower floor at the same building sold for $ 690,000 in 2014.
View the document: Trump Organization advertised prices in February for Eric Trump’s condos.
The transactions illustrate the unique advantages that real estate developers like Trump have when passing down valuable assets between generations.
“Not everyone has the opportunity to avoid gift taxes, just developers with developer units,” said Beth Shapiro Kaufman, an estate planning attorney and president at Caplin & Drysdale in Washington, D.C. “The biggest game in gift taxes is valuation issues.”
An owner who sells real estate for less than it’s worth would typically have to pay gift tax on the difference between the sales price and the true market value. Any personal gifts that are worth more than $ 14,000 in a year are subject to up to 40 percent in federal taxes.
But as the building’s developer selling the units for the first time, Trump had lots of flexibility within the law to determine the value of the apartments.
“This is really, really primo real estate,” said Bob Lord, a tax attorney who reviewed the transaction records at ProPublica’s request. “Why would you show a sale at $ 350,000 other than to play games for tax purposes?”
The units were originally rent regulated, which would typically lower the value of the apartments significantly.
Associated Press/Mark LennihanNew York City records state that the condos are no longer rent regulated.
It’s not clear when they were deregulated, but the result is that Eric Trump will likely be able to sell the apartments at significantly higher prices.
It’s also unclear if anyone currently lives in the condos. The younger Trump bought another, much larger, apartment in the building for $ 2 million in 2007.
It’s ultimately unclear how much, if any, taxes Trump paid on the transactions. The Trump Organization, the White House and Eric Trump did not respond to requests for comment.
But other taxes paid on the transaction suggest gift taxes were not paid. Trump paid a total of $ 13,000 in city and state transfer taxes, New York City property records show. Those transfer taxes, according to a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Finance, are not usually paid when “bona fide gifts” are involved.
Also, when a sale is reported as a gift, buyers and sellers typically disclose in transfer records that the sale is taking place between two relatives. The Trumps did not.

Trump has said that he, like many Americans, wants to keep his taxes at a minimum. “I fight like hell and pay as little as possible,” he told CBS’ “Face the Nation” in August 2015. Trump has proposed repealing the estate tax entirely.
The condo sales were disclosed in President Trump’s 2017 federal financial disclosure, which was released by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics last month. The buyers were listed as two limited liability companies. After we asked readers to help us analyze the documents, a reader flagged the deals and noted that the LLCs listed as the buyers were managed by Eric Trump.

Trump bought the Central Park South building in 1981 and later converted it into condos. The building’s 80 units were initially filled mostly with wealthy rent-regulated tenants who had the right to keep renewing their leases at below-market rates as long as they chose to remain in the building. That interfered with Trump’s plan to tear down the building and replace it with a condo project.
Under New York laws, developers who convert apartment buildings into condos must disclose to the New York state attorney general how much they’re looking to sell units for to existing tenants as well as to the public.
Trump’s 1997 disclosure to the attorney general, known as an offering plan, shows that units 13G and 14G were both rent regulated and originally listed for sale at $ 245,000 and $ 250,000, respectively. Over time, as market prices moved higher, Trump filed frequent amendments raising the listed prices, a standard practice for developers. ProPublica and The Real Deal obtained the offering plan and amendments through a public-records request.
Trump reported nearly $ 3.2 million in revenue in 2016 and the first half of 2017 from condo sales using the company, Trump CPS LLC. He resigned as president of that company on Jan. 19, the day before his inauguration.
As with the president’s other assets, Trump CPS LLC is held by the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust and is managed by one of Trump’s lawyers and the president’s sons. Trump put his businesses under the trust in response to criticism about conflicts. As we have reported, President Trump can take funds from the trust any time.
