Former first lady Melania Trump worried that her husband was "blowing" the US response to COVID, but he told her she worried too much, a forthcoming book on Donald Trump's presidency reveals.

Melania Trump was "rattled by the coronavirus and convinced that Trump was screwing up," wrote New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker and New Yorker staff writer and CNN global affairs analyst Susan Glasser in their new book "The Divider: Trump in the White House, 2017-2021."

She shared her concerns with former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Trump ally, in a phone call and sought his help to persuade her husband to take it more seriously, according to CNN's reporting on the book set to publish Tuesday.

"'You're blowing this,' she recalled telling her husband," Baker and Glasser wrote, according to CNN. "'This is serious. It's going to be really bad, and you need to take it more seriously than you're taking it.' He had just dismissed her. 'You worry too much,' she remembered him saying. 'Forget it.'"

As the nation confronted mounting death tolls, Trump mocked mask-wearing and suggested disinfectant injections and sunlight treatments to fight COVID. He held a September Rose Garden ceremony to announce Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court that became known as a superspreader event.

Shortly after the event, he and Melania announced they contracted COVID. Polling at the time showed most Americans thought the president didn't take appropriate precautions for his health or the risk of contracting the virus seriously enough.

In February 2020, Trump acknowledged in an interview with author Bob Woodward for the book "Rage" that the virus was "deadly" and more dangerous than the flu, even while saying publicly it was no worse. A month later, Trump told Woodward, "I wanted to always play it down. I still like playing it down, because I don't want to create a panic."

Days later, he was saying he wanted the nation "opened up and just raring to go by Easter."

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Taking a lead from the US, Mexico should allow states to begin legalizing marijuana while broader efforts are in limbo, a senior government official said, as the country seeks ways to tackle record gang violence.

Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid, confronting rising lawlessness in and around the resort cities of Cancun and Los Cabos, said it made no sense for Mexico to maintain prohibition given permissive US policies in states such as California.

“I think in Mexico we should move towards regulating it at state level,” he said in an interview late on Wednesday, calling it “illogical” to divert funds from fighting kidnapping, rape and murder to arrest people using marijuana.

  • The US slapped new sanctions Friday on 24 wealthy Russians and government officials, as well as over a dozen Russian-controlled entities.
  • The sanctions cast a wide net by targeting some of the Kremlin’s top allies, and they are likely to anger Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • “The US sanctions list on Putin cronies hits the bullseye of the Putin regime,” wrote Bill Browder, a banker turned human-rights activist and fierce Putin critic. “Since he values money more than human life, this action couldn’t be a more powerful message.”

Washington came out swinging against Moscow when it announced new sanctions Friday against two dozen Russian nationals and 14 Russian entities.

The sanctions target seven Russian oligarchs and 17 senior government officials who are closely aligned with the Kremlin. The US will also penalize 12 companies operated by the sanctioned oligarchs; Rosoboroneksport, a state-owned weapons manufacturer known to have transported arms to the Syrian regime; and Rosoboroneksport’s subsidiary, the Russian Financial Corporation Bank.

Black Mirror season 4 dropped onto Netflix just before the end of 2017, which means you’re likely all caught-up on it by now, right? If so, come along with me on a journey through a list of Black Mirror cameos you may have missed!

Also: the director of the Black Mirror episode “USS Callister” says he’s more than ready to launch an entire spin-off series based around that one particular Star Trek-inspired segment.

If you have yet to catch up with Black Mirror season 4, you might want to beware of possible spoilers here. In the Black Mirror episode “USS Callister”, there were two very quick, very subtle cameos that may have passed you by. The episode finds several characters trapped within a Star Trek-like series, that actually turns out to be a big, deceptive computer simulation (which is pretty much the go-to Black Mirror twist at this point). Near the end of the episode, the inhabitants of the digital world have a quick confrontation with the voice of an angry, online gamer. There’s a chance that voice sounded familiar to you: it belongs to none other than Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad and Bojack Horseman fame. Not to be smug or anything, but I absolutely noticed this cameo – Paul’s raspy voice is very distinct. I will freely admit that I totally missed the other big “USS Callister” cameo, however.

Eagle-eyed viewers over at Syfy noticed a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo from Kirsten Dunst. Here’s a screenshot that shows Dunst hustling to get out of frame before anyone can notice she’s there.

Dunst’s cameo here may seem random, but the actress is actually engaged to “USS Callister” star Jesse Plemons (in fact, the two recently announced they’re expecting their first child together; mazal tov!); Plemons and Dunst also previously appeared together on Fargo. So there you have it: Kirsten Dunst is now officially part of the Black Mirror universe. Speaking of the Black Mirror universe, how would you like to see it to expand even further?

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Toby Haynes, who helmed “USS Callister”, says that he’d be more than willing to launch an entire new Black Mirror spin-off based on the episode. “‘USS Callister’ is probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever,” says Haynes, adding:

“I was talking with Louise Sutton, who produced this and “Metalhead,” and she cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series. I’d love to do a TV series of “USS Callister”…I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think [Black Mirror creator Charlie [Brooker] might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know. Being a fan of the show as much as I am, and being a part of making it, I’d love to work with that crew and cast again. It’s a gift for a director.”

Without giving too much away, the end of “USS Callister” ends with the starship’s crew jettisoning off to explore vast reaches of (cyber)space, which could very well set the stage for an entire series. That said, the series would likely end up seeming like another Galaxy Quest (or perhaps the FOX series The Orville). Still, this idea has potential if handled correctly.
