The White House showcased a number of products made in each of the 50 states during its second annual “Made in America” event on Monday.

“We’re here today to celebrate the greatest products in the world — products made with American heart, American sweat, and American pride,” President Donald Trump said.

The Trump administration touted the importance of American-made and American-operated products, which was defined as having contained no, or a negligible amount of, “foreign content,” according to a White House pool report. Additionally, the product’s final assembly or processing must have taken place in the US.

“The single best tribute to our workers can be found in the unmatched quality and craftsmanship of the amazing products they bring from the blueprint to the storefront,” Trump added in a statement. “‘Made in the USA’ is a global symbol of unrivaled excellence.”

The products on display at the White House ranged from knives to cotton linens, while the bulkier goods, such as Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet and Ford’s F-150 truck, were on full display outside.

This year’s showcase comes during a contentious period in US trade relations, after the Trump administration targeted China and some US allies with steep tariffs on a variety of goods. China has fought back with tariffs of its own, sparking a global trade war that some fear would plunge financial markets into chaos.

The F-35’s advanced features have been praised by many pilots, but its steep price tag and numerous setbacks have taken away some of the fighter jet’s luster. At around $ 400 billion, the F-35 program is the US Defense Department’s costliest endeavor.

Japan has commissioned the first of its new F-35A stealth fighter jets at a military base in the north of the country amid ongoing regional tension over North Korea’s missile testing.

The Air Self Defence Force (ASDF) plans to add another nine of the radar-evading planes to its fleet from April, according to the Japan Times. “The deployment of the high-performance F-35 aircraft is significant for Japan’s security at a time when neighboring countries have been quickly building up their air force capabilities in recent years,” said Itsunori Onodera, Japanese Minister of Defense.

The move to deploy the jet to the Misawa Air Base in the Aurora Prefecture comes amid increased tensions in the region following North Korea’s latest series of nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Japan hopes to increase its overall number of F-35As to 42 in the coming years as the country seeks to replace its fleet of outdated F-4 models. Each unit costs around $ 95million, according to the manufacturer Lockheed Martin.

The US Air Force grounded dozens of F-35s after five pilots complained of dizziness and tingling in their extremities following flights out of Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona. The pilots were diagnosed with hypoxia, but despite failing to identify the malfunction responsible for the condition the USAF cleared the F-35s to fly after just 11 days.

The F-35 remains a popular jet for countries looking to bolster their defenses. In December, the Joongang Ilbo newspaper reported that South Korea’s defense chiefs plan to buy an additional 20 F-35A aircraft from the US. This follows the country’s previous purchase of 40 stealth jets from Lockheed Martin in 2014.

Overall, the US and its allies plan to buy more than 3,100 F-35s in the coming years as part of a near $ 400 billion program to replace outdated aircraft, according to Reuters.

The missile defense systems will be equipped with SM-3 Block 2A interceptors and will be administered by the Ground Self-Defense Force. However, according to Reuters sources, the infrastructure and launchers alone, without the missiles themselves, would cost Tokyo at least $ 2 billion.

“We need to fundamentally improve our ballistic missile defense abilities to protect our country at all times and in a sustainable manner,” the government said in a document endorsed by the Cabinet on Tuesday, agreeing that North Korea poses a “new level of threat” to Japan, Kyodo News reported.

Japan’s Defense Ministry is seeking a record-high 5.26 trillion yen ($ 48 billion) budget for the fiscal year beginning next April to add missile interceptors alongside other military equipment. Initially, the government was also considering the purchase of the US-built THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system before deciding on Aegis Ashore.

“We believe this new system will significantly boost our abilities to deal with surprise attacks and saturation attacks,” a ministry official told Kyodo.

To expedite the introduction of Aegis Ashore, the ministry is also seeking 730 million yen ($ 6.4 million) in next fiscal year’s budget to cover design costs and research fees to scout two sites in the Akita and Yamaguchi Prefectures as potential locations to deploy two land-based systems. Furthermore, Tokyo will also allocate 2.1 billion yen ($ 18 million) from the supplementary budget for the current financial year, ending March 31, 2018, to speed up the deployment of the US-built hardware.

The deployment of additional missile defense capabilities would unlikely be welcomed by the big regional players, China and Russia. Last month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed concern that the US missile defense systems are encircling Russia, stressing that Moscow cannot accept “attempts to pump armaments and military equipment into the [Asian] region, and to militarize it citing the North Korean nuclear threat.”

Currently, Japan runs a two-tier system to protect its airspace from hostile projectiles. The system relies on the ship-based Aegis SM-3 interceptors to target missiles in space and land-based PAC-3 batteries to intercept rockets flying closer to the ground. With the deployment of Aegis Ashore, Japan hopes to entirely protect its territory from any rogue missiles.

However, so far Tokyo has not used any of its existing arsenals to shoot down any North Korean missiles that have repeatedly been fired in the vicinity of Japan. On November 28, North Korea launched the Hwasong-15 ballistic missile. The projectile flew some 1,000 kilometers eastward, according to the Pentagon, before falling in the Sea of Japan without causing any damage. This was the first missile launch by North Korea in over two months. On September 15, Pyongyang tested the Hwasong-12 missile which flew over Hokkaido, Japan’s second largest island. Earlier on August 29, a Hwasong-12 ballistic missile also passed over Hokkaido airspace.

Aerodynamics and physics dictate that you can’t quite strap an assault rifle onto a DJI Phantom and expect it to fly and hit a target. Florida company Duke Robotics has apparently devised a way to keep a drone steady while compensating for a gun’s recoil. “Though a system of flexibly connected pates, the TIKAD distributes the backward momentum in a way that keeps the vehicle stationary in the air,” Defense One writes. “A ten-pound robot gimbal allows six degrees of movement freedom and the ability to rapidly re-target the weapon and camera.”

Supposedly the system can keep a UAV steady whether it has a grenade launcher for a payload, or a pistol — so long as the weapon is under 22 pounds. The Israeli military reportedly has already bought a number of the TIKADs. Duke describes it as such: “The TIKAD allows us to utilize completely new capabilities against terrorist groups and reduce the number of deployed ground troops, and therefore, the number of casualties.” The remote drones would keep soldiers off the front lines and thus, safer, and you can bet that police departments will be interested in these UAVs as well. Almost a year ago to the day, law enforcement officials in Dallas used an armed bomb-drone to kill a gunman following hours of attempted negotiations.

North Dakota recently passed a bill that allows for weaponized drones so long as they aren’t “lethal,” for instance. Then there’s The Skunk by Desert Wolf that can fire 4,000 paintballs from a quartet of barrels mounted underneath, at a rate of 80 rounds-per-second. Now we have the ability to fire live ammunition from our unmanned aircraft. Yup, this is the future we live in.

The United Arab Emirates has begun using US-made planes to support a Russian-backed general in Libya, Time reported.

At least six American-made Archangel turboprop planes have been seen in satellite images of an airbase controlled by Russian-backed Gen. Khalifa Haftar, the leader of a faction fighting the US- and UN-backed government in Tripoli, Libya’s capital.

This move by the UAE is also violates a UN embargo that bans all transfers of weapons to Libya unless explicitly granted an exception.

Since former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi was killed in 2011, the country has fallen into near anarchy. Three governments are currently vying for power in the country, along with several insurgent groups, such as ISIS.

The conflict is further complicated by the fact that Russia, Egypt, and UAE support Haftar’s government, while the US and UN back the Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Fayez al-Sarraj. When Gaddafi was killed in 2011, with the help of US and NATO air raids, Russia lost billions of dollars in arms deals and oil and gas exploration.

Since Haftar and al-Sarraj’s armies possess small air forces, this new development could tip the scales in Haftar’s favor. And while the two leaders met last week for the first time since January and reportedly agreed to a truce, no official statement has been released.

The American company that makes the planes, North Carolina-based Iomax USA, has sold 48 of the Archangels to the UAE.

Archangels are akin to crop-dusters and can also be fitted with advanced surveillance equipment and weapons.

They fly at slower speeds and low altitudes, making them ideal for patrolling borders and fighting insurgents at close range.

The UAE was one of the top 10 purchasers of US-made weaponry between 2011 and 2015. Egypt, which is also backing Haftar and has allowed Russia to keep troops in military bases along its border with Libya, is also among the top 10.

Some members of Congress have recently called for the US to “engage” with Libya in an attempt to halt Russian aggression in the oil-rich nation. President Donald Trump, however, has said that the US has “no role” in the country.
