The US-led coalition has published the latest casualty figures for its airstrikes in Iraq and Syria since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve in 2014. At least 1,139 civilians have been “unintentionally” killed by coalition strikes, the statement said. The death toll, presented monthly by the US, has been repeatedly challenged by Amnesty International. The group says that the coalition was “deeply in denial” about the “large number of civilians killed and injured by [its] strikes.”

‘You can smell the bodies’: Angelina Jolie in Mosul one year after ‘liberation’ by US-led coalition https://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/ https://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 01:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/ Nearly a year after Mosul in Iraq was declared “liberated” from ISIS terrorists, UNHCR envoy Angelina Jolie said the stench of dead bodies buried under the rubble was still present, amid the “worst devastation” she has ever seen.

“There are bodies in this rubble that stay here and you can smell the bodies and some of them have family members that are here and they are unable to move them,” the Hollywood superstar and Special Envoy for the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said, after exploring a part of Mosul that was recaptured last year with the US-led coalition’s active support.

Even though this was Jolie’s fifth trip to Iraq, the horrific destruction she witnessed in the Old City this time really broke her heart. Walking around the narrow streets of the city center, completely destroyed by artillery and airstrikes, the 43-year-old Oscar winner called it the “worst devastation” she saw in her 17 years representing the UNHCR across the globe.

“This is the worst devastation I have seen in all my years with UNHCR. These people have lost everything and the trauma and the loss they have suffered is unparalleled,” Jolie said.

Ever since Mosul was recaptured following massive bombardment and intensive street-to-street battles to drive out Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists, locals are not receiving any aid to rebuild the city. Unexploded mortars and other explosives still litter the streets of the Old City, while people lack basic medical facilities and infrastructure. Conditions witnessed by the actress in West Mosul are simply “appalling.”

“Displacement is still happening. The camps near the city are still full. Whole areas of West Mosul remain flattened. Enabling people to return and stabilizing the city is essential for the future stability of Iraq and the region,” she said, in a statement.

After Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the city liberated in July, 2017, the government has done little, and received even less support from its allies, to reconstruct the once-thriving city, Iraq’s second largest. An estimated 90 percent of West Mosul, where the historical part of town is located, was destroyed or significantly damaged during the nine-month siege by Iraqi forces, supported by the US-led coalition. It will now cost Baghdad an estimated $ 88 billion to rebuild the country following the devastating battle against IS, money which the government simply lacks, and Western partners are reluctant to provide.

“I call on the international community not to forget Mosul, and not to turn their attention away from its people. We have learnt in Iraq before and elsewhere in the region the dangers of leaving a void. It is also what the families and survivors deserve,” Jolie said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, spoke on the phone following the strikes launched by the US, the UK and France against targets in Syria. Putin reiterated his statement that attacking Syria without a UN Security Council mandate was a violation of international law on the part of the Western powers, a statement on the Russian presidency website says. “The Russian and Turkish sides are assuming that in light of what happened, it is required to boost two-way cooperation, aiming for real advancement of political settlement in Syria,” the Kremlin said.

US-led coalition ‘manufactured consent’ with ‘fabricated’ gas attack – George Galloway on Syria https://briefnews.eu/us-led-coalition-manufactured-consent-with-fabricated-gas-attack-george-galloway-on-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/us-led-coalition-manufactured-consent-with-fabricated-gas-attack-george-galloway-on-syria/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 21:57:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-led-coalition-manufactured-consent-with-fabricated-gas-attack-george-galloway-on-syria/

George Galloway says that both the alleged gas attack in Syria and subsequent US-led missile strikes this week were a “deliberate fabrication” meant to distract from a number of domestic scandals in the coalition member-states.

Galloway, a former MP-turned-broadcaster, spoke to RT.com about the latest US-led strikes in Syria, the pretext behind them and the potential consequences for both the Syrian people and the international community. Like many political commentators, Galloway questions both the timing and the authenticity of the reports on a gas attack in Douma outside of Damascus earlier this week.

“I believe that the entire Douma chemical weapons attack story is a deliberate fabrication… if Britain was involved in that fabrication I would be shocked but not surprised,” Galloway said. “It stands to reason that you can’t risk, even if the risk is small, the OPCW behaving with professional integrity and saying that there is no evidence of such a chemical weapons attack and certainly not one by the Syrian regime.”

“You can’t risk that so you have to, in Noam Chomsky’s words, ‘manufacture consent,’ for an attack and then launch the attack before that manufactured consent begins to dwindle away.”

Galloway also maintains that, in launching missile strikes against the Syrian government without sufficient international backing, let alone UN Security Council (UNSC) approval, President Donald Trump emulated the former US Commander-in-Chief Bill Clinton by using military action abroad to distract attention away from an embarrassing and widely publicized sex scandal at home.

“I believe that Trump did it, just like Bill Clinton… Clinton launched cruise missiles against Sudan and Iraq… In Clinton’s case it was Monica Lewinsky, in Trump’s case it’s… Stormy Daniels. And, of course, many other problems also beset Trump so he tried to bounce free from those travails in the time-honored way of killing foreigners and destroying their country.”

Trump, however, was not alone in taking unilateral action in Syria without the support of his government or his people; Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron both eagerly followed suit.

In May’s case, Galloway maintains she took the decision “because she was afraid that she would lose in the parliament.”

Regarding the conspicuous timing of both the alleged chemical weapons attack and then the subsequent US-led strikes that happened on the day that investigators from the OPCW were due to inspect the Douma site, Galloway believes that the bombings were a cynical attempt to undermine the probe.

“It’s much harder now for the OPCW to report a negative because they will then be exposing Britain, France and the United States, three members of the security council [as having] launched a war on an entirely false pretext. We must hope that the OPCW behaves with professional integrity and we’ll soon see if they do.”

Galloway, like many other political commentators, also drew comparisons with the Iraq war, which was, rather ominously, based on an entirely fabricated pretext regarding alleged stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. He also highlighted the fact that military personnel from a number of P5 member states are operating in close proximity to each other, raising the stakes of the unauthorized intervention even higher.

“It is as illegal as the US-UK attack on Iraq and, of course, made even more dangerous by the presence in the country they’re attacking of very large numbers of personnel from security council country, namely, Russia.”

Galloway also scoffed at the French Foreign Minister’s suggestion that now was the time for diplomacy.

“Ha! Now it’s time. After you’ve launched a war… but it can’t be diplomacy which seeks to give the alphabet soup of Islamist fundamentalists [a seat] at the negotiating table which they couldn’t win and hold on the battlefield. If it is diplomacy that is designed to find a way out of this war, that would be a good thing. If it was diplomacy that, for example, sought partition of Syria and dismembered it, that would be entirely unacceptable.”

Finally, the outspoken former MP took aim at Donald Trump’s remarks that it was a case of “mission accomplished” in Syria following the coalition strikes.

“If the mission was to destroy universities, people’s homes and kill some people then that was accomplished but that wouldn’t be much of a mission. If the mission was to weaken Syria and its alliances I would have thought that was an epic failure. Apart from anything else, to borrow the slogan of George W. Bush at the end of the Iraq War: ‘War is, by any standards, a public relations disaster.’ I remind you that 95 percent of all the casualties in Iraq died after George Bush declared that the mission was accomplished.”

  • The UN Security Council did not adopt a resolution from Russia on Saturday that would have condemned the US and its allies for a joint military strike on Syrian chemical weapons facilities.
  • Russia, China, and Bolivia voted in favor of the draft resolution, eight countries voted against it, and four abstained.
  • Russia, which is Syria’s strongest military ally, repeatedly warned the US against carrying out Friday’s strikes, and the operation dealt a significant blow to already fragile US-Russia relations.
  • Nikki Haley, the US’s ambassador to the UN, said the US would be “locked and loaded” if Assad used chemical weapons again.

The United Nations Security Council rejected a resolution Saturday from Russia that would have condemned “the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic by the US and its allies in violation of international law and the UN Charter.”

Russia, China and Bolivia voted in favor of the draft resolution, Reuters reported. Eight countries voted against the draft and four abstained. In order to pass, a resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes from the US, France, China, Russia, or the UK.

‘Cynical and illegal’: Journalists, activists slam US-led missile strike against Syria https://briefnews.eu/cynical-and-illegal-journalists-activists-slam-us-led-missile-strike-against-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/cynical-and-illegal-journalists-activists-slam-us-led-missile-strike-against-syria/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 18:58:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cynical-and-illegal-journalists-activists-slam-us-led-missile-strike-against-syria/ The US-led missile attack against Syria demonstrates Washington’s complete disregard for international law, and its timing, before a proper investigation was conducted, raises serious questions, experts told RT.

Describing Saturday morning’s missile attack as illegal, Joe Lauria, an independent journalist and former Wall Street Journal correspondent, told RT that the strike was shocking – but not surprising.

“They did not prove that they were acting under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which is self-defense – the US was not acting in self-defense,” Lauria told RT. “They did not get Security Council authorization, and the US Congress did not weigh in on this, so it’s illegal internationally and under US law.”

The decision to launch the missiles just hours before inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were scheduled to begin a fact-finding mission at the site of the alleged gas attack in Douma on Saturday represents “quite an extraordinary moment,” Lauria told RT. “But I should say it’s not unusual. The United States has done this kind of thing before,” he added.

Rick Sterling, an investigative journalist and member of the Syria Solidarity Movement, agreed, telling RT that the missile attacks on Syria by the United States, France and the UK were nothing less than an “attack on international law.” According to Sterling, “There is no justification for three countries taking it upon [themselves] to become the judge, jury and executioner of whether or not chemical weapons have been used. There is a process that should be followed.”

Malik Ayub Sumbal, a political analyst and broadcaster, said the strikes “violated all international laws, all international rules” as well as being a direct affront to the UN Charter.

“This is a cynical act. It’s illegal under international law, it’s illegal under US law. The administration and its supporters have no plausible story that this act will make anything better,” Robert Naiman, policy director at Just Foreign Policy, told RT.

“Even the New York Times dismissed this act before it happened as a feel-good, limited strike, a symbolic act for domestic consumption. So what can we say about the United States, the United Kingdom, and France? These are cynical actors. They’re not interested in what happens to civilians in Syria, or in Yemen, or anywhere else in the Middle East. It’s a sad day for the world, to know that these countries are so cynical and callous.”

F. Michael Maloof, a former Pentagon security analyst, said that the timing of the strikes clearly showed that the US and its western allies “didn’t really care” about a proper investigation into the April 7 incident. Finding out who is actually behind the alleged gas attack is “not really their motivation,” Maloof said.

The OPCW said on Saturday that their fact-finding mission will continue despite the airstrikes.

“They will make their decision, and if it aligns with what Russia said, that there was no chemical attack – we don’t even know if there was one, let alone if it was chlorine or Sarin – you can be sure it won’t be broadcast or printed pretty much in the US media,” Lauria told RT. “We don’t even hear very much here in the US about the inspectors arriving. That was buried here.”

Asked if he thought the US would strike Syria again if more cases of alleged chemical weapon usage emerged, Lauria pointed out that “we don’t even know that [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad] used chemical weapons this time. Or the last time. So they’re talking about ‘if he does it again.’ Well, how about waiting to find out whether he did it this time? So in other words, they don’t need proof. That is clear,” he said.

Ultimately, the humanitarian pretext behind the strikes, coupled with Washington’s disinterest in waiting for a proper investigation into the Douma incident, should raise alarm bells,  Naiman told RT.

“These are the same three governments who are arming, and facilitating, and participating in the Saudi war in Yemen. The cause of the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Millions of human beings on the brink of famine, worst cholera outbreak in human history, millions of human beings suffering from the blockade of fuel, medicine and fuel. These are the governments that [would] have us believe that this bombing has something to do with protecting civilians,” Naiman said.

“Does anybody in the world actually believe this military action has anything to do with protecting civilians? I can’t imagine anyone would be so foolish to believe such an assertion.”

A scientific facility in Barzeh, north of Damascus, has been targeted during the US-led airstrikes overnight. Footage from the scene shows the building has sustained heavy damage.

The Center for Scientific Research partially collapsed after reportedly being hit by several missiles during the attack. No one was injured during the strike, according to Syrian state media.

It remains unclear whether the facility was, in fact, operational in the first place, however. Despite this, the Pentagon claimed that the attack on this facility “crippled” what they referred to as a Syrian chemical weapons program.

Early on Saturday, the US and its allies launched over 100 missiles on civilian and military facilities in Syria, citing the alleged chemical incident in the town of Douma as a pretext. Syrian air defense systems intercepted 71 cruise and air-to-surface missiles fired by Washington and its allies, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

While the purported incident is yet to be investigated by the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, whose experts are to start the work on Saturday, western powers were quick to blame the Syrian government.

Conservative pundits hammer Trump for US-led strikes in Syria https://briefnews.eu/conservative-pundits-hammer-trump-for-us-led-strikes-in-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/conservative-pundits-hammer-trump-for-us-led-strikes-in-syria/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 15:59:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/conservative-pundits-hammer-trump-for-us-led-strikes-in-syria/

In the wake of US-led airstrikes against Syria following an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, many of US President Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters have vehemently criticized the action.

Conservative writers, bloggers and newscasters that have long stood by Trump are abandoning the president in the wake of his latest intervention in Syria for breaking one of his main campaign promises: to refrain from meddling in the Middle East. Many have even retweeted several of Trump’s own criticisms of past administrations’ actions in the Middle East as a reminder of just how galling these latest strikes are to many in his support base.

While many of his supporters voiced their criticism of Trump’s ‘one-and-done’ strike against a Syrian airfield in April 2017, others saw it as a token gesture to appease the international community in the wake of an alleged chemical weapons attack carried out by pro-Assad forces. US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis admitted in early February that the US had yet to find evidence to justify the 2017 cruise missile strikes.

Conservative firebrand and Fox News host Tomi Lahren, a vocal supporter of Trump since his election, decried the return to US foreign intervention that became the hallmark of both the Bush and Obama presidencies.

Lahren’s Fox News counterpart and equally outspoken political commentator Laura Ingraham suggested that the US “should rethink how we deploy our forces Middle East.”

“It is interesting, the president’s elected over a year ago, he ran on being a non-interventionist… And that’s one of the reasons Trump won this election. Because unlike the Bushes and unlike Romney and Rubio, Trump came out and said, ‘You know something? It was a mistake, and we should rethink how we deploy our forces Middle East.’ And I think, obviously a lot of people, a majority of people, agree with that.”

Outspoken political commentator Alex Jones appeared distraught while presenting news of the strikes to his audience during a marathon broadcast on the subject. And Jones was far from alone in resorting to swearing to emphasize distaste for a foreign policy more akin to Trump’s former presidential campaign rivals than the promises he himself made in 2016.

Others warned that the US had endangered Christian populations in Syria. In addition, several formerly ardent Trump supporters added that the actions could also embolden beleaguered Islamic State militants, who have been pushed to the brink of defeat across both Syria and Iraq.

Even Trump’s foreign allies and supporters have excoriated the US president’s decision to strike the Syrian military and further escalate tensions in the region just days after Trump stated that a withdrawal of US troops was imminent. Most notable among them was former UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

However, not everyone has abandoned Trump. His more fervent supporters have claimed that the US fulfils a role that no other nation can, while others have attacked his critics, advocating for the unilateral action even in the absence of congressional approval.

5 things you should know about US-led 'one-time' strikes on Syria https://briefnews.eu/5-things-you-should-know-about-us-led-one-time-strikes-on-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/5-things-you-should-know-about-us-led-one-time-strikes-on-syria/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 09:02:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5-things-you-should-know-about-us-led-one-time-strikes-on-syria/ Multiple targets in Syria were bombarded by the US, UK, and France in retaliation to what they said was an Assad-orchestrated chemical attack near Damascus. Here are the main facts about the intervention.

Washington approved “precision strikes” against Syria early on Saturday, alongside British and French forces that also took part in the bombing. Shortly after US President Donald Trump announced the bombardment, reports began surfacing of explosions in Damascus.

Syrian air defense units were scrambled to thwart the aerial invasion, intercepting 71 out of 103 of the missiles, the Russian Ministry of Defense said. Now, as Syria deals with the aftermath of the early morning airstrikes, we look at five major things you should know about the American-British-French attack.

What did they target?

One of the strikes targeted a scientific compound in Barzeh in the vicinity of Damascus, which the coalition claimed was involved in the production of chemical and biological weapons. The Syrian government said the bombing destroyed an education center and scientific laboratories, but resulted in no casualties.

The UK Defense Ministry said four Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s launched Storm Shadow missiles at what the UK military claims was a former missile base, 15 miles west of Homs. The ministry claimed that the Syrian government kept a stockpile of chemical weapons precursors at the site.

Twelve cruise missiles targeted Al-Dumayr air base east of Damascus, according to the Russian military. The Syrians used Soviet-made S-120, S-200 and Buk-type anti-aircraft systems, claiming to have intercepted all the missiles.

What weapons were used?

The US did not specify the types of weapons deployed in the strikes, but it did use Tomahawk cruise missiles in last year’s bombing of Syria’s Shayrat air base. US Defense Secretary James Mattis said more than twice as many weapons were fired as in April 2017, adding “it was a heavy strike.”

The Russian Defense Ministry said the US and its two allies deployed combat aircraft and warships to launch over 100 cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles on Syrian civil and military facilities. The strikes, it said, were conducted by two US ships traversing the Red Sea, adding that the coalition also deployed B-1 Lancer strategic bombers and arranged tactical air support in the airspace over the Mediterranean.

Social media & ‘classified’ intel: Pretext for the intervention

The timing of the American-British-French attack is noteworthy. It came just hours before the UN’s Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) experts were set to visit the Damascus suburb of Douma on Saturday to establish whether chemical weapons had been used there last week.

Announcing the strikes, the White House said it has a large body of “reliable intelligence” as well as “social media users, non-governmental organizations, and other open-source outlets,” which implicate the Syrian government in the alleged Douma attack. Washington also referred to the questionable claims that “the Syrian regime has repeatedly used chemical weapons to compensate for its lack of military manpower.”

Earlier, the US State Department claimed to have proof that the Syrian government was behind the alleged chemical attack in Douma. However, it refused to make the intelligence public, as “a lot of this stuff is classified at this point.” Moscow repeatedly dismissed the claims, saying the chemical weapon attack was orchestrated. The Russian military previously warned of a “provocation” involving chemical weapons being planned by militants.

How did the Syrians respond?

Syrian air defenses did all they could to protect the country. Ruptly footage has emerged showing Syria’s surface-to-air missiles responding to the attack. Russian military said later Syrian air defense units downed 71 out of 103 cruise missiles launched by US and its allies.

Damascus harshly condemned the bombing, saying it will never bow to the West’s attacks on its sovereignty. Syria’s UN envoy, Bashar Jaafari, accused the US, UK, and France of blatantly violating the UN Charter. “I would clarify here that the history of these three states is built on using lies and fabricated stories to wage wars in order to occupy states, seize their resources, and change governments in them by force,” he said, as cited by Syria’s SANA news agency.

Russia warns of consequences

While none of the cruise missiles launched by the US and its allies reached the Russian air defense zones, the strikes sparked outrage in Moscow.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the US-led strikes hit a war-ravaged country “that has been trying to survive terrorist aggression for many years.” In a statement posted on Facebook, she compared the invasion to the start of the 2003 Iraq War, which was based on claims that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction.

The defense ministry said the Russian forces did not deploy their air defense systems stationed in Syria to intercept the American, British, and French missiles. For its part, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford said the Pentagon “specifically identified targets” to “mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved.” The coalition did contact their Russian counterparts to “deconflict airspace,” but did not “coordinate targets” with Moscow.

“There’s an obligation, particularly when dealing with the matters of peace and security, to act consistently with the Charter of the United Nationals and with international law in general,” Guterres said in a statement over the coordinated series of airstrikes by the US, the UK and France in Syria.

He went on to stress that the UN Security Council, of which the three countries are permanent members, “has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.”

Guterres called on all the UN members to “unite” to deter further escalation that might aggravate the suffering that the Syrian people have endured during the conflict.

“I urge all Member States to show restraint in these dangerous circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate the situation,” he said.
