Video: SNL’s Cheri Oteri Revives Barbara Walters Impersonation to Usher In 2020 on CNN — Watch https://briefnews.eu/video-snls-cheri-oteri-revives-barbara-walters-impersonation-to-usher-in-2020-on-cnn-watch/ https://briefnews.eu/video-snls-cheri-oteri-revives-barbara-walters-impersonation-to-usher-in-2020-on-cnn-watch/#respond Wed, 01 Jan 2020 15:59:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/video-snls-cheri-oteri-revives-barbara-walters-impersonation-to-usher-in-2020-on-cnn-watch/

CNN didn’t get the real Barbara Walters to appear on its New Year’s Eve countdown show, but they got the next best thing.

Saturday Night Live alum Cheri Oteri, who famously impersonated Walters during her time on the sketch series, revived her impression of the 20/20 anchor just before 2020 actually began.

“I’m afraid retirement didn’t suit me as much as people had hoped. And now that I’m trending on social media… I’ve decided to dust off my power suit and get back in the game,” Oteri’s Walters announced to co-hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen. “I can finally say with confidence: This is… 2020.”

The character then “revealed” her next TV project, after admitting that she’s “not necessarily” interested in returning to The View, which the real Walters co-hosted from 1997 to 2014. (“Though I do miss Joy [Behar] poking fun at me behind my back, and Whoopi [Goldberg]’s questionable footwear and sassy black quips,” she confessed.)

Instead, Walters unveiled plans for a new docuseries that will follow her day-to-day life, chronicling her “relatable struggles” (which aren’t very relatable, after all) and addressing hot topics like global warming, the presidential election and, naturally, “who farted?”

Cohen managed to keep a (mostly) straight face during Oteri’s bit, but the same can’t be said for Cooper: He was doubled over in laughter for most of her appearance, eventually sinking out of frame altogether.

Watch Oteri’s Walters impression below, then drop a comment with your thoughts:

The virtual reality (VR) market is expected to rally in 2018 after seeing slow growth from 2016 to 2017. The uptick will be largely catalyzed by the emergence of the newest headset form factor, stand-alone VR headsets, which address some of the biggest pain points that have prohibited mainstream consumers from adopting VR.

Icons: Combat Arena aims to usher in a new era of platform fighters https://briefnews.eu/icons-combat-arena-aims-to-usher-in-a-new-era-of-platform-fighters/ https://briefnews.eu/icons-combat-arena-aims-to-usher-in-a-new-era-of-platform-fighters/#respond Wed, 14 Feb 2018 16:36:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/icons-combat-arena-aims-to-usher-in-a-new-era-of-platform-fighters/

 Presented by Intel

For Wavedash CEO Matt Fairchild and creative director Jason Rice, building a new platform fighter makes more than just business sense: it’s their way of giving back to the games and communities that brought them together.

“I literally owe my entire life — my career, my friends — to this genre. … I owe so much, and I have seen the transformative power that this genre has and its ability to draw in people from across the board and get them into a competitive community and build relationships there,” said Fairchild.

“I have friends all over the world who — growing up as this east-coast, middle-class, white Protestant boy — I would not have made friends with if I had stayed in my little bubble, if gaming hadn’t pulled me out of that and made me more open to new stuff. … But the platform fighting community is where my home was, where my people were at,” Rice added.

The two friends first met more than a decade ago when Rice, who was working at Major League Gaming at the time, hired Fairchild to host Super Smash Bros. tournaments in Texas. Those early experiences were invaluable to them, and now they’re leveraging that expertise for Icons: Combat Arena.

Icons’s gameplay is similar to Super Smash Bros. Players can choose from a number of different characters to fight with, and the goal is to deplete your opponents’ lives by knocking them off the stage. One big difference from Nintendo’s juggernaut series, however, is that Icons will be free-to-play when it comes out on PC (it’s currently in an invite-only closed beta), which will enable it to grow and evolve alongside its players.

It’s the kind of game Wavedash’s founders wish existed 10 years ago. But it wasn’t until a series of industry-wide changes — including the rise of esports, online streaming, and Amazon’s $ 970 million acquisition of Twitch — that Fairchild and Rice finally decided to make their dream a reality.

They recruited other like-minded developers. The team is a mix of triple-A veterans (some coming from big studios like Riot Games and Blizzard) and talented amateurs from the Super Smash Bros. modding community.

“So when we looked at all of these things converging together, we saw an opportunity to take the things that Riot did with League of Legends, the things that Blizzard did with Hearthstone, and more recently, the things that Bluehole has done with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — to take a genre that’s supported by passionate players and make it accessible and exciting to watch, and then take it to new audiences,” said Rice.

The developers believe that fighting games haven’t had its “League of Legends moment” yet, where a game breaks through the noise to reach mainstream-levels of awareness and success. And they hope Icons can fill that gap. But Wavedash faces several challenges, not the least of which is how do you create a new platform fighter that’s accessible for casual players, yet
deep enough for hardcore fans?

Getting out of Smash’s shadow

One way that the Oakland, California-based studio is wrestling with that question is through Icons’s design philosophy. It involves three main goals: make the game easy to learn, hard to master, and an endlessly watchable experience. With the first part, Wavedash is staying true to the pick-up-and-play nature that made platform fighters so popular in the first place. You don’t need to master complicated move sets to start having fun in Icons.

But if you do want to dive deeper, the company is planning on adding a series of tutorials that’ll help beginners get comfortable with the more nuanced strategies in the game.

Seasoned platform fighting players will also feel at home in Icons’s world. It has familiar character archetypes or roles, like Kidd the Space Goat (the swift “space animal” archetype) and the empress Zhurong (the beefy “sword fighter” archetype). Wavedash cited Super Smash Bros. Melee as an inspiration for the kind of gameplay depth it wants Icons to have: players are still trying to master the GameCube fighter more than 16 years after its release.

The last goal is perhaps the most difficult one to engineer. The developer won’t really know how Icons fares as a spectator sport until it’s out in the wild. However, the team has seen some positive signs, like the time Fairchild took his fiancée, who hadn’t played a platform fighter before, to an Icons tournament.

Toward the end of the competition, she grew more excited about the matches, and she even started to pick out players to root for based on their play style.

“Building a game that is inherently watchable makes it not only more fun to play, but it also means that it’s super digestible as content for a platform like Twitch or YouTube. And it makes it something that is ‘esports ready,’” said Rice. “Now, we don’t get to decide if our game is an esport or not in the end. The players will. You can host the tournaments, but they have to show up and support you.”

While similarities do exist between Icons and other platform fighters, the team hopes that a mix of new and familiar features will give the game its own identity. One example of bringing something new to the genre is the elemental duo Afi and Galu. They represent what Rice called a duo archetype, where players can switch between them at any time (the inactive partner stays on the stage as a statue).

Both of them share the same basic moves. But they also have their own special attacks: Afi has fire powers and Galu can manipulate water. From private playtesting sessions, Wavedash found that players quickly grew fond of Afi and Galu, not only because of their strategic potential, but also because of their quirky personalities.

“I’m most proud of the work that Jason and the design team — Adam Oliver and Wes Ruttle — did on taking a familiar idea and making it new, and we’re seeing that in the feedback with people that have gotten to beta test Afi and Galu. They say, ‘This is what I wanted from a duo character. This is familiar and yet it’s also unlike any duo character I’ve ever played,’” said
Fairchild.

Enlisting the help of the community

Gathering community feedback so early in the development process has always been a part of the developers’ plans. Those responses help them identify problems they should work on, as well as which aspects of the Icons’ roster need improvement. Wavedash regularly travels to different gaming events and tournaments — like TwitchCon, EVO (the Evolution Championship Series), and CEO (Community Effort Orlando) — to collect even more data by asking players to fill out surveys (some of who compete in fighting games for a living).

“Ultimately, Wavedash is a small team that’s punching above its weight class. And we’ve only been able to do that because we’ve taken this kind of unorthodox approach to game development. But our players have helped us shape who these characters should be and what the game should feel like,” said Rice.

Of course, the studio can’t react to every individual piece of feedback; it still has a vision it wants to maintain. Rice and his colleagues have to carefully sift through comments (whether good or bad) to see if any of them actually helps reinforce the original design goals.

“Something Jason says a lot is we are in this business to create joy. Our job is to get people together playing games, having fun, and to always be that uniquely positive force in their lives. So as long as we’re going towards that and people are invested in the outcome, then we’re in good shape,” said Fairchild.

Jessie T. Usher is the ‘Son of Shaft,’ Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree Also Returning https://briefnews.eu/jessie-t-usher-is-the-son-of-shaft-samuel-l-jackson-and-richard-roundtree-also-returning/ https://briefnews.eu/jessie-t-usher-is-the-son-of-shaft-samuel-l-jackson-and-richard-roundtree-also-returning/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 13:56:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jessie-t-usher-is-the-son-of-shaft-samuel-l-jackson-and-richard-roundtree-also-returning/ son of shaft

The new Shaft movie won’t be another reboot. In fact, it’s going to be a family affair. The newly titled Son of Shaft has cast Jessie T. Usher in the title role, but he’s not coming alone. He’s going to have a little help from his father. And his great uncle. Because it seems that previous Shaft actors Samuel L. Jackson and Richard Roundtree have also signed on to join director Tim Story‘s action/comedy.

Deadline has the news, reporting that New Line is currently negotiating to bring Jackson and Roundtree back into the fold. This means that Son of Shaft will have a direct connection to the previous film versions of the character, with Usher carrying the legacy of one of cinema’s coolest characters.

Richard Roundtree originated the character of John Shaft on the big screen in Gordon Parks’ 1971 film Shaft. He returned to play the badass private detective in 1972’s Shaft’s Big Score and 1973’s Shaft in Africa. Roundtree even made a cameo appearance in John Singleton’s 2000 reboot-of-sorts, also titled Shaft, which followed Samuel L. Jackson as NYPD detective John Shaft, the nephew of the original John Shaft. Hopefully, Usher’s character will also be named John Shaft, to make this all extra awesome/confusing.

If you haven’t seen Jessie T. Usher before, you probably haven’t watched the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, which begins its fourth season this month. And like the rest of the world, you probably skipped Independence Day: Resurgence, where he played Dylan Hiller, the son of Will Smith’s character from the original movie.

In Son of Shaft, Usher will play the son of Jackson’s John Shaft (which makes him the grand nephew of Roundtree’s John Shaft) and they will have something of a mismatched buddy cop dynamic in the new movie. Here’s how Deadline describes the movie, which will see the millennial Shaft teaming up with old school daddy Shaft:

He will play the son of the detective, who, after long being estranged from his father, finds himself teamed up with him. The young man is an FBI agent, a cyber expert, and the partnership with dad is an uneasy collision of old school meets new school.

Tim Story, who signed to to direct Son of Shaft back in January (long before we knew any of these story details), recently told us that his movie will be a blend of action and comedy. Heck, he dropped the father/son detail right there on our lap:

My Shaft movie is going to be definitely not straight action. We’re going action-comedy or comedy-action, I’m not exactly sure which one comes first. We’re going to definitely make sure the stakes in the world are real, and then you’ve got these characters who are dealing with kind of a father/son situation, we’re going to see them put a family back together.

John Shaft is one of the main ’70s “blaxploitation” icons for a reason: he was effortlessly cool, the kind of streetwise badass who just oozed charisma…until it was time to kick ass and take names. Then he was all business. The remake is less memorable, but Jackson’s turn as Shaft 2.0 was as entertaining as you’d expect. So the thought of seeing three Shafts on the big screen together is certainly intriguing.

And honestly, that brings me to my one big hang-up here. Tim Story has made laid-back comedies (Babershop) and superhero movies (Fantastic Four and its sequel) and buddy cop action films (Ride Along), but can he make a Shaft movie? While I’m glad New Line has entrusted this character to a black director, John Shaft is too powerful and too important of an icon to be reduced to parody. Hopefully, Story’s promised comedic touches will enhance Shaft’s legacy rather than reduce him to a joke.

Son of Shaft is set to begin filming later this year.

  • The Game is promoting the initial coin offering, a blockchain-based fundraising method, of a tech company looking to transform the cannabis industry.
  • The market for ICOs has exploded to $ 1.8 billion, and a lot of people are calling it a bubble.

The Game, a hip-hop artist, is promoting a tech company that says it is going to use blockchain technology to revolutionize the weed industry.

Tech company Paragon is set to release information about itself and its planned initial coin offering, a red-hot cryptocurrency-based fundraising method, on August 15, according to a video tweeted by The Game on Thursday.

Standing alongside Paragon CEO, Jessica Versteeg, a former model and Miss Iowa 2014, the rapper said the firm was preparing to “revolutionize cannabis and the world.” Here’s a tweet of the video:

Initial coin offerings are a new funding vehicle using blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin. The market for so-called ICOs is exploding, with over $ 1.86 billion raised via the method since the beginning of the year, according to data from Autonomous NEXT, a financial technology analytics provider. The massive growth of the ICO market has many people in the space thinking it’s a bubble with many firms using the method as a way to raise vasts amount of money without offering an actual product.

To raise money through an ICO, a company issues a new digital currency that can either be spent within its ecosystem, a bit like Disneyland dollars, or used to power part of the business, like the fuel you put in your car.

At this point, it isn’t exactly clear what the company will do, but Versteeg will hold a Facebook Live Q&A next week to give folks “a behind the scenes look at Paragon and how we’re disrupting the cryptocurrency space.”

Paragon’s website has no additional information aside from a mailing list sign-up form and links to their social media sites.

Screen Shot 2017 08 11 at 1.34.27 PMAutonomous NEXT

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has backed an initial coin offering. Boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to Instagram last month to promote an ICO for Stox.com, a blockchain startup. It ended up raising $ 33 million worth of Ethereum, according to a press representative for the firm.

To be sure, the rapid growth of initial coin offerings has worried some Wall Streeters.

Business Insider reached out to Schwark Satyavolu, a general partner at Trinity Ventures, a venture capital firm, to get his impression of Paragon and their plans to launch an ICO.

“It made me smile,” he said. “The lack of information and visibility is quite minimal and stereotypical of these ICOs.”

He thinks an ICO is practically the only way a company could raise money with such limited information.

“Fundamentally, it is because you have investors who feel like they are missing out on the next bitcoin,” Satyavolu said. “That’s getting people to jump in.”

Satyavolu thinks the ICO market could be a bubble akin to the mortgage bubble that ushered in the 2008 financial crisis.

“If investments continue at the current rate, this could become the next mortgage crisis with people – including institutional investors – losing hundreds of millions of dollars when (not if) many of these companies go out of business,” Satyavolu said.

To be sure, Satyavolu doesn’t think ICOs are all scams. As an investor, he is skeptical of ICOs.

“These companies running ICOs could have the best intentions, but they might also have no idea what they’re doing,” he said. “And in many cases, you just don’t have the proper information to make an informed decision.”

As for Paragon, Versteeg told Business Insider that the firm is addressing “real problems in the cannabis industry” and that all the necessary information will be out for folks to examine next week.

“This isn’t another Potcoin,” she said referring to an other weed-focused cryptocurrency. “People will be pleasantly surprised with what we are doing.”

Usher Joins Corden for Carpool Karaoke https://briefnews.eu/usher-joins-corden-for-carpool-karaoke/ https://briefnews.eu/usher-joins-corden-for-carpool-karaoke/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 12:51:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/usher-joins-corden-for-carpool-karaoke/

If we had to rate Usher’s Carpool Karaoke bit on a scale of 1 to 10, we’d give it a certified 20.

The prolific pop star joined Late Late Show host James Corden Tuesday for his signature segment, which included a run-through of Usher’s biggest hits. The pair crooned “Yeah!” (with Corden nailing the Ludacris rap), “Let It Burn,” “I Don’t Mind,” “OMG” and “Caught Up” — with a passer-by joining in for a moment that made both Usher and Corden laugh.

In between songs, Urrrrsher gave Corden a quick dance lesson (key takeaway: “Take the Fosse out of it”) and proved himself a good samaritan in helping push a stalled car down the street (“Don’t die!” Corden cried as the singer blocked traffic so the impaired vehicle could turn).

Watch Usher’s Carpool Karaoke turn above, then grade it via the poll below.

1. Y’all remember Usher’s early music, right?

You know, the songs full of love and loss? Like the hella sad stuff in “My Boo” and “U Remind Me”?

2. Well, recently @abneycamryn posted on Twitter that her sister, Jade, used to date Usher back in high school…

3. …and people are convinced that she might actually be the young love that Usher was always singing about.

@AbneyCamryn This is her confession
https://t.co/twou9pqxlL

— ಠ_ಠ ☺ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (@StreetTeamAC)

7. You see, “My Boo” talks about young love and first kisses, which means it’s highly likely that Jade is actually the girl the song is about.

8. Some even started suggesting that Jade hit up Usher now that all this information is out in the open.

@AbneyCamryn @Sinful_Loveee She got dm him with the ‘hey big head’

— Khaleesi (@Its_randle)

@AbneyCamryn Your sister going in them DMs like “hey, hey, hey daddy”😍

— Hello, it’s me (@JudithBosh)

10. The tweet also inspired others to share images of their family members dating other celebrities back in the day.

@AbneyCamryn girl my aunt use to date Jay Z too smh. They so foolish 😂

— Mari 🍀 (@fuckupthefunn)

@fuckupthefunn @AbneyCamryn shittttt my uncle Lyndall used to date Beyoncé but we knew this one

— Barz da Lyricist (@BarzdaLyricist)

@AbneyCamryn Thath cwazy. My mom uth to date Mike Tython back in the day

— Jordyn Cooper (@Jordyn_Cooper)

@AbneyCamryn shiddd.. my auntie & tupac used to mess also 😂😂

— khi (@khiahhhhh_)

  1. But really back to the important question here. Do you think “My Boo” is about Jade?

    1. Seems pretty damn unlikely.

    2. Um, I’m 100% sure she is.

    3. Maybe. I just don’t know what to think anymore.

ZTE’s Gigabit Phone wants to help usher the ‘5G era,’ will be unveiled at MWC https://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/ https://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/#respond Thu, 16 Feb 2017 08:37:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ztes-gigabit-phone-wants-to-help-usher-the-5g-era-will-be-unveiled-at-mwc/ ZTE has quite a portfolio of smartphones lined up for Mobile World Congress this year — so much so that the company has announced what may be its next flagship device a little early: the ZTE Gigabit Phone.

The Chinese company says it’s a “forward-looking smartphone” for the 5G era, though the successor to 4G LTE is not expected to come until at least 2020. Naturally, the Gigabit Phone will allow for 1 gigabit per second download speeds, which ZTE believes would advance 360 degree panoramic virtual reality videos, allow for “instant cloud storage,” high-quality music- and movie-streaming, and more.

More: The Quartz will be ZTE’s first Android Wear watch, and it was just leaked online

Unfortunately the company’s announcement today is largely a teaser — we don’t have any other information regarding specifications or even what the Gigabit Phone will look like. You’ll have to wait until the official unveiling in Barcelona at the end of February.

ZTE said at the show it will also highlight how the Axon 7, its current flagship, received the Android 7.0 Nougat update — meaning it is now the third smartphone to be compatible with Google’s Daydream View headset for Daydream, the search giant’s mobile virtual reality platform. The Axon 7 received the Nougat update a few weeks ago.

The Gigabit Phone won’t be the only new smartphone unveiled by ZTE, though, as the company said there will be more additions to its Blade series.

More: ZTE Axon 7 mini review

We will likely learn more about ZTE’s Hawkeye project as well, which looked to crowd-source ideas for a smartphone and fund it via Kickstarter. The project has hit a few roadblocks and may need to be pulled until the company comes back from the drawing board with some tweaks.

There are also rumors that the company is building an Android Wear smartwatch with LTE connectivity — the ZTE Quartz. It’s rumored to arrive later this year, but we could see the announcement at MWC.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about the Gigabit Phone and other upcoming announcements from ZTE.
