The US military has released footage from a massive battle that reportedly took place between Russian military contractors and the US and its Syrian allies in early February.
The battle, wherein 500 or so pro-Syrian regime forces advanced towards a known US position in western Syria and fired with tanks and artillery, reportedly ended with up to 300 attackers killed by US airpower and artillery.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

”Turkey was candid,” Mattis told reporters aboard a plane traveling to Asia from the US. ”They warned us before they launched the aircraft they were going to do it, in consultation with us.”
On Saturday, Turkey launched a series of air strikes on the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in northwestern Syria, controlled by the YPG militia which Ankara considers to be a terrorist group. Turkish ground forces pushed into the territory Sunday, supported by loyal anti-Assad militants.
“Turkey is a NATO ally. It’s the only NATO country with an active insurgency inside its borders. And Turkey has legitimate security concerns,” said Mattis, who noted that gains against Islamic State did not soothe Turkey’s concerns over a breakaway Kurdish state on territory.
The US has spent millions of dollars to arm and train the Kurdish Peshmerga forming the backbone of a ground force that reclaimed parts of Islamic State territory, and took back the city of Raqqa last year.
“They have proven their effectiveness. It has cost them thousands of casualties. But you have watched them, with the coalition support, shred the ISIS caliphate in Syria,” said Mattis.
The US defense chief then promised that US diplomats would “work this out.”
“We are very alert to it. Our top levels are engaged. And we’re working through it,” said Mattis.
Washington’s announcement earlier this month that it was planning to train a 30,000-strong Kurdish-led force in Syria appears to have been a major factor that triggered Turkey to move into Afrin, where it now plans to establish a safe zone 30 km deep into Syrian territory.
Syria, and its ally Moscow, have condemned the incursion, with Russia moving its troops out of the territory where the first fatalities have been recorded.

Turkey launched a massive air and ground campaign against US-backed Kurds in Syria’s Afrin province on Saturday, which its military has code-named operation “Olive Branch,” according to state-run Anadolu Agency.
Turkish warplanes struck Kurdish observation posts and many other targets, Anadolu reported, while its ground forces launched at least 15 rounds of artillery.
There were also reports of Turkish tanks rolling into Afrin, and the YPG claimed they repelled ground invasions near Rajo and villages in the Bilbil district.
The YPG released statements on Saturday saying they “harbor no hostile intent towards Turkey,” and asked Ankara to “halt its unjustified threats.” The YPG added that multiple civilians and YPG fighters have already been killed.
The YPG also denied Ankara’s accusations that its forces have launched artillery across the border, despite having previously released videos contradicting that claim.

Turkey considers the YPG to be an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has carried out a deadly, decades-long insurgency in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast.
Sporadic cross-border artillery exchanges between the two sides have been ongoing at least since August, but increased on Thursday after the US announced it would maintain and train a 30,000-strong Kurdish force in northern and eastern Syria to stabilize the regions against ISIS.
The YPG’s growing strength across a swath of northern Syria has alarmed Ankara, which fears the creation of an independent Kurdish state on its southern border.
But the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces — of which the YPG is a major component — accused Turkey on Saturday of using cross-border shelling as a false pretext to launch an offensive in Syria.
The YPG also accused Russia, which, according to the BBC, has evacuated its troops from Afrin province, of being as much responsible for the invasion as Turkey.

Differences over Syria policy have further complicated Turkey’s already difficult relationship with the US, a NATO member. Washington has backed the YPG, viewing it as an effective partner in the fight against ISIS.
A US State Department official on Friday said military intervention by Turkey in Syria would undermine regional stability and would not help protect Turkey’s border security.
Instead, the US called on Turkey to focus on the fight against ISIS. Ankara accuses Washington of using one terrorist group to fight another in Syria.

Hernandez, who has been Honduras’ president since 2014, was one of the lawmakers in 2009 to support the ouster of President Manuel Zelaya over his seeking a referendum on re-election. Ironically, now he himself faces accusations of trying to hold on to power.
An alumni of the State University of New York, Hernandez is said to have established close relations with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, from the time Kelly was the head of US Southern Command and the Department of Homeland Security.
Now his government struggles to contain large-scale protests, akin to those that rocked the country after Zelaya’s ouster, after the opposition alleged fraud in the election vote count.
The incumbent president was trailing opposition candidate, Salvador Nasralla, by a large margin in a preliminary count of the 26 November elections, when the country’s electoral commission said that Hernandez was closing in on his rival.
Shortly afterwards, an alleged technical glitch caused the commission to stop publishing the results. When it announced on Friday that Hernandez was leading by 46,000 votes after some 95 percent of ballots counted, mass protest erupted. The count has been delayed since with Nasralla demanding a recount of more ballot boxes than the commission had offered.
Hernandez’ government has imposed a nationwide curfew amid civil unrest following the election.
At least one protester has been killed, and 20 have been injured in the clashes. Tensions spilled over after both main candidates claimed victory in Sunday’s vote.
“Honduran people have taken the streets very courageously, just as they did in 2009, when Manuel Zelaya, the democratically elected President, was overthrown in a coup,” Professor of Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the City University of New York, Daniel Shaw, told RT.
The coup “was backed by Washington DC, when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, and Barack Obama was the President, the Honduran people were in the streets for months and months to denounce this coup,” he said. Shaw added that the Honduran people will “continue to be in the streets to denounce this electoral fraud.”
The government has given the army and police more powers to contain the unrest – something Professor Shaw calls a “cruel military and police rule,” in violation of “international law [and] of the human rights law.
“We have to see the bigger picture here, the role that Honduras has always played in Central America, as the backyard of the US,” he continued. Shaw noted that the US has military bases there, which they are using “to do as they will.”
The professor told RT that in Central and Latin America, “the US Embassy has been a hotbed of activity for the past few nights, where CIA officials and US intelligence officials have been exchanging plans with their top lieutenants.”
People are protesting what they call suspicious delays in the vote counting, and political activist and lawyer Cristhian Mancera Mejia agrees that fraud, indeed, is possible.
“We’re looking at a president in the case of Hernandez, who is trying to prolong his time in power now. If it is true that he did win the elections, I would hope for the sake of democracy and for Honduras that he comes with results soon enough so that people can understand and know who their president is, and who the new president will be,” he said.
Turmoil will only grow if the uncertainty in results continues, he warned. “Hopefully it doesn’t lead to more bloodshed we have learned that there are some protesters have been killed in the streets,” Mejia told RT. “I think we have to calm down and offer the people of Honduras a result that satisfies not only the people, but also the region, as well.
“It seems like these leaders have not learned the lesson,” Mejia said. “By not excepting the results or by telling people that they have won, when in fact they have not, or probably even by manipulating the information, they lead the population to think that there is some kind of manipulation going on, that the truth has not been told.”
Unfortunately, there’s no way to make everyone happy, Meija believes: “If the results are given – whether it is in favor of Salvador, or in favor of Hernandez, nobody is going to be satisfied.”
The unrest is destined to repeat again and again, even should it calm down soon, says William Robinson, professor of Sociology, Global and Latin American Studies.
“This is a country in which a democratically-elected government was overthrown in 2009. There was a mass movement and opposition to that. It eventually calms down: 2010, 2011, 2012. Then there were elections in 2013. Again the opposition won those elections, according to the leading international observers, but again there was electoral fraud.”

Brett McGurk via Twitter
As Iraqi forces close in on the Islamic State’s final patches of territory, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has given the once-powerful terror group an ultimatum: Surrender or die.
“Daesh members have to choose between death and surrender,” Abadi said, using a derogatory term for ISIS.
ISIS has suffered severe territorial losses and bell weather defeats in the past month, as a US-led bombing campaign and US-backed and trained forces ground the group down to its last legs.
At a Department of Defense briefing on Tuesday, the top US general, Joseph Dunford, said that at ISIS’s height, “we saw as many as 40,000 foreign fighters from 120 different countries.”
At the same briefing, Brett McGurk the special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, said the flow of foreign fighters had nearly stopped, and the group’s funding is at its “lowest level ever.”
McGurk pointed to ISIS’ own propaganda, which “about a year ago” stopped advising foreign fighters to come to Syria as the group was losing badly on the ground.
ISIS used to hold significant cities and oilfields in Iraq and Syria, but recent US-backed offensives have relegated them to a section of desert along the Iraqi-Syrian border, effectively trapping them.

Initially, after declaring the “caliphate,” or territory under ISIS’ ultra-hardline Islamic control in 2014, ISIS fighters proved potent on the battlefield rolling back Iraqi security forces. But after a US-led intervention that ultimately gained support from 75 countries, the terror group has nearly imploded.
The group carried out high profile attacks abroad, notably killing civilians in public places in London, Paris, and Brussels, but acting Department of Homeland Security chief Elaine Duke credits the US-led offensive keeping them on the run with preventing further attacks.
But after around 70,000 ISIS fighters have been killed, the group once bent on dying for its cause has begun to surrender en masse.
Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve
McGurk reported that ISIS surrendered in “large numbers” after the fall of its Syrian capital of Raqqa.
On Thursday, the Red Cross reported that it had gained access to the families of ISIS fighters in territories they once ruled.

RAQQA, Syria (Reuters) – U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) raised a militia flag inside Raqqa stadium on Tuesday, one of the last remaining areas that were held by Islamic State in its former capital, a Reuters witness said.
The flag of the Kurdish YPG, the strongest of the militias in the SDF, was planted in the middle of the stadium, where fighting had ended, but which had not been fully cleared of landmines, militia fighters told the witness.
A local field commander said no Islamic State fighters remained even in their two remaining city strongholds.
Fighting on Monday night and Tuesday has focused on Raqqa‘s National Hospital and the nearby city stadium, two central positions in which it was well entrenched.
The fall of Raqqa city, where Islamic State staged euphoric parades after its string of lightning victories in 2014, is a potent symbol of the jihadist movement’s collapsing fortunes. From the city, the group planned attacks abroad.
It is now hemmed in to a tiny bomb-cratered patch of the city around the stadium that is pounded from the air by a U.S.-led coalition and encircled by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters.

Islamic State has lost swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq this year, including its most prized possession, Mosul, and in Syria it has been forced back into a strip of the Euphrates valley and surrounding desert.
The SDF, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias, took the National Hospital in fierce fighting overnight and early on Tuesday, said spokesman Mostafa Bali in a statement.
“During these clashes, the National Hospital was liberated and cleared from the Daesh mercenaries, and 22 of these foreign mercenaries were killed there,” said Bali, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.
Another SDF spokesman, Talal Silo, said he believed all fighting around the hospital and the stadium would end in the coming hours.
An SDF field commander who gave his name as Ager Ozalp said three militiamen had been killed on Monday by mines that have become an Islamic State trademark in its urban battles.
Another field commander, who gave his name as Abjal al-Syriani, said SDF fighters had entered the stadium and found burned weapons and documents.

He had heard estimates of about 100 Islamic State fighters remaining in their last besieged pocket, Ozalp said.
The stadium has become the last major position held by Islamic State after four months of battle in Raqqa and the departure of some of its fighters on Sunday, leaving only foreign jihadists to mount a last stand.
The SDF has been supported by a U.S.-led international coalition with air strikes and special forces on the ground since it started the battle for Raqqa city in early June.
The final SDF assault began on Sunday after a group of Syrian jihadists quit the city under a deal with tribal elders, leaving only a hardcore of up to 300 fighters to defend the last positions, including the hospital and stadium.
REUTERS/StringerRaqqa was the first big city Islamic State captured in early 2014, before its rapid series of victories in Iraq and Syria brought millions of people under the rule of its self-declared caliphate, which passed laws and issued passports and money.
It used the city as a planning and operations center for its warfare in the Middle East and its string of attacks overseas, and for a time imprisoned Western hostages there before killing them in slickly produced films distributed online.
The SDF advance since Sunday also brought it control over a central city roundabout, where Islamic State once displayed the severed heads of its enemies, and which became one of its last lines of defense as the battle progressed.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have taken the National Hospital in Raqqa, one of the last remaining bastions of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in its former Syrian capital, Reuters reports, an SDF spokesman said. The SDF is now fighting IS in the area around Raqqa stadium, spokesman Mostafa Bali said.
The SDF is a predominantly Kurdish militant group, controlling large areas in northern Syria. It has been receiving broad military support from the US, and proclaims that fighting IS is its primary goal. The SDF and the Syrian Army, with its allies, are conducting two separate operations in the area, aiming to control the oil- and gas-rich eastern part of Syria.
An Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) group used civilians as human shields to evacuate from the Syrian city of Raqqa overnight, a spokesman for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) told Reuters on Sunday. The US-backed SDF are still trying to oust Islamists from the city, and some foreign fighters left under the so-called withdrawal deal. “The operation has finished and the battle continues,” the spokesman said. “Last night, the final batch of fighters [who agreed to leave] left the city.”
US backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) approaching the Deir ez-Zor region from the north work to the same objective as Islamic State terrorists, the Russian Defence Ministry said.
The MoD added that Syrian troops had been shelled from areas where SDF and US forces are stationed.
Russia had detected the transfer of SDF militants from Raqqa, stronghold of the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS/ISIL), to northern areas of Deir ez-Zor, the Russian Defense Ministry’s spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said in a statement.
“SDF militants work to the same objectives as IS terrorists. Russian drones and intelligence have not recorded any confrontations between IS and the ‘third force’, SDF,” Konashenkov said.
He added that the Syrian troops had been shelled at least twice from areas on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, where SDF militants are stationed together with US troops.

Russia is currently leading an offensive targeting IS terrorists in these areas, the ministry said.
“For this reason Russia unequivocally told the commanders of US forces in Al Udeid Air Base (Qatar) that it will not tolerate any shelling from the areas where SDF are stationed,” Konashenkov said.
According to the ministry, in the last 24 hours the Syrian government troops “continued their offensive operation” to destroy the last “IS bridgehead” near the city of Deir ez-Zor. Troops led by Syrian army General Suheil al-Hassan liberated around 16 square kilometers of territory and two settlements on the western bank of the Euphrates River.
“More than 85 percent of Deir ez-Zor’s territory is under the full control of Syrian troops. Over the next week the city will be liberated completely,” Konashenkov said.
Yet some 25 percent of Raqqa, the unofficial IS capital, remains in terrorist hands, the ministry said. IS captured Raqqa in January 2014 and since then the city has been fully controlled by the extremists.
The city of Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria was besieged by Islamic State in 2014. Syrian government forces lifted the blockade of the city in early September.
However, the liberation of Deir ez-Zor also triggered a confrontation between Syrian government forces and the US-backed SDF militants, the point of contention being control of Deir ez-Zor’s oil fields.
Following Damascus’ strategic victory food, medicine, and other essentials started to reach the city by convoy, where previously the inhabitants had to rely on air-drops.

U.S.-backed Syrian militias will not let government forces cross the Euphrates River in their bid to recover eastern Syria, setting a red line for President Bashar al-Assad as both sides converge on Islamic State in Deir al-Zor, their commander said.
Militia commander Abu Khawla said a civilian administration would be set up to run areas of Deir al-Zor province being captured from Islamic State by his fighters, including its oil fields. The Syrian government was “not fit to lead and rule the people”, he said.
The Deir al-Zor military council, fighting as part of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has advanced toward Deir al-Zor from the eastern side of the Euphrates River since launching an offensive into the province a week ago.
Government forces, supported by the Russian air force and Iran-backed militias, have simultaneously advanced into Deir al-Zor from the west. Last week, they broke an Islamic State siege of the provincial capital, Deir al-Zor city, which sits on the western bank of the river.
Deir al-Zor province is Islamic State’s last major foothold in Syria and Iraq. Rich in oil, it is bisected by the Euphrates River and abuts Iraq.
The Russian- and U.S.-backed campaigns against Islamic State in Syria have mostly stayed out of each other’s way as the sides seek to avoid conflict, with the Euphrates often acting as a dividing line between the sides. Talks have been underway to extend a formal demarcation line that has separated the campaigns, officials have said.
Abu Khawla warned government forces and their militia allies against firing across the river as his fighters close in – something he said had happened in recent days.
“Now we have 3 km between us and the eastern riverbank, once our forces reach the area, any shot fired into that area we will consider an attack on the military council,” he said.
Rodi Said/Reuters
“We have notified the regime and Russia that we are coming to the Euphrates riverbank, and they can see our forces advancing,” he said. “We do not allow the regime or its militias to cross to the eastern riverbank.”
“MOVING FORCEFULLY AND QUICKLY”
“Every village around the eastern riverbank of the Euphrates river until the Iraqi-Syrian border is a goal for our forces,” he said. “We are moving forcefully and quickly. We do not have a timeline, but we hope soon to free the entire eastern bank.”
Reflecting the demarcation line, the U.S.-led coalition said on Thursday the SDF was not planning to enter Deir al-Zor city.
But while Deir al-Zor city was not an SDF target, Abu Khawla did not rule out the possibility that it may become one, saying people in the city wanted to be liberated from “the regime and Daesh at the same time”.
But “right now, we have a schedule that we’re following which is the liberation of the eastern riverbanks of the Euphrates”, he said.
He said Islamic State had “shown fierce resistance” when SDF fighters entered the outskirts of Deir al-Zor on the eastern bank of the Euphrates. “The battles are continuous,” he said.
Rodi Said/Reuters
Abu Khawla, who is in his early 30s, said 10,000 fighters were taking part in the Deir al-Zor campaign, the bulk of them members of Arab tribes from eastern Syria. The campaign is supported by the Kurdish militia that dominate the SDF.
“All our soldiers’ training (is) in the Coalition training camps, they oversee our training and our armament,” he said.
Abu Khawla was a member of a Free Syrian Army rebel group in Deir al-Zor until Islamic State took over most of the province in 2014 at the height of its expansion in Syria and Iraq. He fled to Turkey before returning to Syria and joining the SDF.
“Now we are setting up a civil council parallel to the military council of Deir al-Zor, and this civilian council will run all areas freed from (Islamic State),” he said.
