  • Russian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking aid from Russian conscripts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out. 

Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.

In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.

"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.  

The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.

Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane.  The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.

In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.

"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.

"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.

British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

The fate of millions of faithful and over 200 monasteries are in the hands of Ukraine’s president, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said, urging the international community to stop Kiev from deepening the religious rift.

“Recently, the interference of the leaders of the secular Ukrainian state in church affairs has grown into a blatant pressure on the episcopate and clerics of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, what allows us to speak of the beginning of the large-scale persecutions,” Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said in a letter sent to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Pope Francis, head of the Anglican Communion Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, as well as other religious leaders and top politicians.

The fate of “over two hundred monasteries and millions of faithful” is currently in the hands of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko, who, “in concert with Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople” seeks to create “some new religious organization” to replace the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the letter reads.

The letter came on Friday, just ahead of the so-called “unification council” scheduled for December 15. The event has been actively championed by the country’s top government officials. The gathering is supposed to bring Orthodox hierarchs together and create a new, allegedly “independent” church. The only canonical religious entity of the country – the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – is a constituent part of Moscow Patriarchate. The vast majority of its hierarchs are not expected to partake in the “unification council.”

Active involvement of government officials in the drive for the supposed church independence is actually a blatant breach of the country’s constitution, Patriarch Kirill stressed.

“The Ukrainian President himself does not make secret his hostile attitude towards the Church. Mr. Petro Poroshenko publicly threatened to banish from the country those Ukrainians who do not want to join the “autocephalous church” which is being created by the government,” the letter reads.

The Constitution of Ukraine stipulates that ‘the church and religious organizations in Ukraine are separated from the state’ and therefore any interference of the state in inter-church relations is unconstitutional.

“[The teeth] have been kicked out by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operatives, fell out or were removed due to horrible conditions, bad food and sloppy dentist work,” Yaroshenko wrote.

The pilot’s health is declining; he cannot eat properly as he suffers from digestive problems. “Every time I eat, I’m afraid to choke,” Yaroshenko stated. The authorities, however, have not even provided him with a medical evaluation to determine what is wrong with his health.

“I don’t receive any assistance with my problems and I still was not sent to a medical exam, which they promised when my family came to visit. There’s a dentist at the jail medical ward, yet all he can do is to pull out the remaining teeth. And there aren’t many of them left,” Yaroshenko said.

This summer, he was transferred from Fort Dix federal prison in New Jersey to another prison in Danbury, Connecticut, after he was allegedly involved in a scuffle with another inmate. The new jail has even less adequate healthcare, according to Yaroshenko. Apart from that, prisoners in Danbury are not allowed to go for walks in the open air from November to March, which further contributes to his declining health.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was once a professional civil aircraft pilot, working in various countries on the African continent. In 2010, he went to Liberia seeking work, but was promptly arrested in a DEA sting operation and secretly transferred to the US in violation of international law and universal diplomatic protocol.

The pilot was accused of “conspiring” to carry a large batch of cocaine from South America to Liberia and sentenced to 20 years behind bars in 2011. Yaroshenko has always maintained his innocence, stating that the charges against him were actually based on statements he made due to his poor understanding and command of English.

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has urged the Saudi-led coalition to stop airstrikes in heavily populated Yemen, shortly after Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said a that long-lasting ceasefire is the only possible solution.

The American Bar Association published a letter urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to delay its vote on Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court until the FBI conducts an investigation into the numerous sexual misconduct allegations against him, according to a CNN report published Thursday.

“The basic principles that underscore the Senate’s constitutional duty of advice and consent on federal judicial nominees require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI,” ABA president Robert Carlson said in a letter, CNN reported.

“If we can find a way to switch it on for the big moments in the finals we should be all right,” said Richardson, with SA a chance to recall left-arm spinner Tom Andrews against the Bushrangers.

Former SA leg-spinner Tom O’Connell, 18, has eight wickets for Victoria but Adam Zampa is the best performed tweaker in the competition with 9 at 21.

“He has been on fire, an Aussie call up wouldn’t be far away, he is controlling middle overs,” said Richardson of leg-spinner Zampa.

“He has a new run- up, action and spinning the ball both ways.”

And if you’re on a standard tariff (ie the hideously expensive one most people are on) then as with typical bills you’re overpaying by £360 a year, so if you don’t act you’re ripping yourself off.

All the big six providers have put up prices this year, and now we’ve had a second round from four of them – which are due to hit your next bills.

For example, British Gas first hiked its prices on 29 May, the second rise is due on 1 October which will see the price on typical usage after rises at £1,205. As for the two who haven’t done it a second time, that could still come.

Compare them to the cheapest deals on the market and you’ll see huge savings. Yet speed is of the essence. With wholesale prices (the prices energy companies pay for energy) rising, many cheap deals are ending and being replaced by more expensive ones. 

The cheapest one-year fix at the beginning of August was £867/yr, today the cheapest fix deal is £978– a rise of more than £111/year in the past month alone. And for the moment this trend looks likely to continue, so the quicker you sort it out the better.

Yes, there’s a price cap coming, but don’t sit on your hands waiting. 

The regulator Ofgem has said it will introduce a price cap on standard prices by the end of December. For someone who uses a typical amount of energy it’ll be £1,136/year fixed for six months. That will mean those on big 6 standard tariffs will see a reduction. 

While Ofgem calls this a ‘fair’ price, that doesn’t mean it is a ‘good’ price – the danger is people will get the false sense of security that they’re on a good deal – where as you can lock in a fixed deal for a year at up to 20 per cent cheaper.  

How to find your cheapest deal

If you’re put off by the fact your winners are names you don’t know – don’t be. Simply scroll down to one you do know – or one with a good customer service rating. You don’t have to go for the very cheapest – go for one you’re happy with.

Don’t think switching is complicated. It’s not.

It only takes minutes to find your cheapest deal and then it’s switched over in 17 days, it’s the same pipes, gas, meter, safety – you don’t lose supply – the only difference is price and customer service. And there’s no break in supply when you do switch.

British Gas customers get £200/year off – but only if you ask for it

3.5m homes are on British Gas’ standard tariff. If you’re loyal and want to stick with British Gas, its launched a new dual fuel, direct debit tariff (i.e. where you get both gas and electricity from it) called ‘Energy Plus Boiler Cover Oct 19’, available for both new and existing British Gas customers who apply online (or better via a comparison site to see exactly what it’ll cost).

On average it’s £1,020/year (though it depends on your region) and the price is fixed for a year, so it won’t rise in October – meaning a typical saving of £185/year, plus it also includes British Gas Boiler Insurance for no extra cost, as you’d normally pay £50ish for that it takes the saving to over £200.
