Canada's Bianca Andreescu jumped 45 positions to a career-high No. 107 in the world rankings Monday after her surprising run to the final at the ASB Classic.

The 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., stunned former world No. 1s Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and American Venus Williams en route to her first appearance in a WTA Tour final on Sunday in Auckland, New Zealand.

Andreescu, who won three qualifying matches to enter the main draw, dropped a three-set decision to 14th-ranked Julia Goerges of Germany in the championship match.

Is this a sitcom I see before me? It is indeed – and a very fine one at that.

Upstart Crow, which returns to BBC2 this week for an eagerly anticipated second series, is a rollicking good comedy written by Ben Elton, the man responsible for such classic shows as Blackadder, The Young Ones and The Thin Blue Line. 

The show portrays Will Shakespeare (played with great panache by David Mitchell) as a put-upon glove-maker’s son from Stratford-upon-Avon, who is constantly battling to gain respect from the snobbish aristocrats who deride him as “an upstart crow.” As an added bonus, each episode cleverly weaves in the plot of a Shakespeare play.

David, who has also starred in another much-loved sitcom, Peep Show, shines as Shakespeare, and explains that Upstart Crow has struck a chord because the playwright makes a brilliantly comic figure.

“Shakespeare is a classic sitcom character. He is an aspiring, middle class, professional social climber. He wants to get on in the world, but the world is not open to him. He is ambitious, but he is held back by his meagre circumstances. He is the most brilliant writer ever, but he still struggles to make his mark. He wasn’t the big deal back then that he is now.”

David, 43, who is also a team captain on the popular BBC1 panel game, Would I Lie To You?, adds: “Like Hancock, Captain Mainwaring, or Basil Fawlty, the Shakespeare in Upstart Crow is a thwarted, frustrated, boxed-in, angry British man. There is a great tradition of those in British comedy.”

In the new six-part series, Shakespeare is once again having to fight against the condescending rivalry of snooty playwright Robert Greene (Mark Heap) and turn out plays for his squabbling, ego-driven London theatre company (Steve Speirs, Spencer Jones and Dominic Coleman.)

Meanwhile, the playwright is forced to deal with a Tudor public transport system that is almost as disastrous as today’s as he attempts to commute back and forth from his home in Stratford-upon-Avon. 

There, he tries to placate his dissatisfied family: long-suffering wife Anne (Liza Tarbuck), teenage daughter Susanna (Helen Monks) and dysfunctional parents (Harry Enfield and Paula Wilcox).

In the opening episode, entitled The Green-Eyed Monster, an African prince called Otello (Steve Toussaint) is visiting London. Will thinks that making friends with him will give him the access into the upper echelons of society, but someone is attempting to turn Otello into Will’s sworn enemy.

Later episodes of Upstart Crow will uncover the true stories behind such plays as Twelfth Night and Two Gentlemen Of Verona. Shakespeare will also join forces with the composer Thomas Morley (played by Channel 4’s new Great British Bake Off host Noel Fielding) and accidentally discover an early inspiration for Falstaff. In the keenly awaited Christmas special, Oscar winner Emma Thompson will guest star as Queen Elizabeth I.

The first series of Upstart Crow proved a huge hit, with an average of two million viewers tuning in to the six-part comedy series, with critics praising David’s star turn. Just learning Ben Elton’s fiendishly difficult lines is an achievement in itself, agrees David’s co-star Steve Toussaint, 52. 

“He is just fantastic. He is very much at the helm of the ship. I could name you 10 actors who couldn’t do it. When we are in a scene with him, we think he deserves a round of applause just for remembering his lines!” 

When Upstart Crow was first announced, there were concerns that a comedy about Shakespeare might be a tad serious – but they need not have worried. 

“Before the first series, when people heard that it was a sitcom about Shakespeare, their hearts felt very heavy. But as soon as it started, they were overjoyed at seeing something so funny,” says Paula Wilcox, 67. “Now people are really up for it. They love the show.”

David says that he hopes audiences will find plenty of laughs in the second series of Upstart Crow. “I think this is Ben’s finest work – and that’s saying something. Ben is not interested in writing obscure comedy only for dedicated fans. He wants to write comedy the whole family can enjoy.”

The deal is said to be valued between $ 35 and $ 40 million, according to people familiar with the matter.

Zeta Global aspires to compete with giants in the “marketing cloud” sector, such as Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce and IBM. These companies offer marketers a slew of data and technology-driven services aimed at helping them acquire and keep customers.

For example, a big auto marketer might use one of these companies to manage its list of existing customers, its email database, its ad budget forecasts and its website clickstream data – all via powerful software.

As evidence of the growing importance of this sector, Zeta raised $ 140 million in new funding in May, valuing the company at $ 1.3 billion, reported TechCrunch.

All of these cloud giants promise that their tools and technology can help marketers make better decisions about what customers they should go after and where to spend their budgets. And all of them are surely interested in claiming to be pioneers in machine learning or artificial intelligence.

The Boomtrain deal is Zeta’s claim to be ahead on this front. Boomtrain currently works with companies such as CBS Interactive and Dow Jones.

“Nobody knows where anything is going, but we’re making a bet on this being important,” said David A. Steinberg, Zeta Global’s cofounder and CEO. He said that via Zeta’s own machine-learning technology and Boomtrain’s proprietary algorithm, marketers will be able to aggregate vast streams of data and get that much smarter about how to correspond with consumers. 

Theoretically a brand using Zeta’s services will be able to figure out the best time of day to advertise, the most compelling offer to display, and the most ideal medium to reach a person with an ad, for example.

“We believe this leapfrogs us past our competitors,” he said. “We are putting this tech at the core of our platform. Anybody who is not investing heavily in [AI] is going to lose to their competitors.”

Take some of the tweed-jacket, traditionalist design character of the original Land Rover Series 1 and mix in some of the modern features and comforts of the Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser, and you’re probably not far from what New York State upstart Bollinger Motors hopes to build. Except it intends for it to be purely electric.

Most automakers—including fledgling electric-vehicle makers—have started out with a commuter car, a flagship sedan, or a racy sports car for their first EV. But for Bollinger Motors, it makes a lot of sense to apply its electric-vehicle know-how to a rugged, traditional SUV first.

Bollinger Motors started in 2014 out of a renovated car-repair shop and is led by Robert Bollinger, a newbie to the auto industry with a varied résumé that includes having worked on an organic hair- and skin-care business. The automaker isn’t looking for outside funding, but it won’t discuss how it plans to raise the staggering amounts needed for all the steps from proper vehicle development through sourcing, certification, and production.

So far, Bollinger has teased only a partial side-angle shot of its SUV ahead of its anticipated reveal this July. But in the meantime, the company has revealed a few other details including some locked-in dimensions as well as a preview of the rolling chassis it has engineered that will underpin the SUV and, perhaps, a longer-wheelbase pickup to follow.

An Off-Roader at Its Core

–

The 295-pound chassis is built of aluminum but has a high-strength-steel rollover structure. The truck houses all of its core electric components within the chassis rails—with lithium-ion-battery storage under the driver and passenger, high-voltage systems at the middle of the vehicle, and motor systems at the front and rear.

The truck rolls on BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain 285/70R-17 light-truck tires with high-offset, eight-lug alloy wheels and geared axle hubs that permit the whole suspension to be raised on the chassis. An adjustable, self-leveling four-wheel independent suspension permits 10 inches of wheel travel, and the anti-roll bars can be disconnected to allow full articulation for off-roading. The steering is hydraulically assisted.

It’s a good size for off-roading. The wheelbase is just 105 inches—about the same as the Toyota FJ Cruiser, which is much loved by off-road enthusiasts, but nearly 10 inches longer than the wheelbase of the two-door Jeep Wrangler. Approach and departure angles are also impressive, at 56 and 53 degrees respectively, while the breakover angle is 33 degrees.

Based on the rolling chassis and the placement of the steering column, we’d venture to say that the production vehicle will have an extremely upright—and perhaps refreshingly retro—driving position.

Who’s the target buyer?

–

“Because it will have class-leading off-roading credentials, we think that the vehicle will be well suited for outdoor enthusiasts as well as various government agencies with clean-fleet initiatives,” said chief marketer and spokesman Jeff Holland. The company can reach a break-even point with only modest sales, he argued, adding that it’s “a very standard back-to-basics SUT from a materials and packaging standpoint, which also saves cost.” Pricing is to be competitive with comparable SUVs available today; Bollinger said the company will ask for $ 1000 deposits, fully refundable, when it begins taking orders.

Ambitious Timeline, As Rivals Get Ready

The company is aiming for first deliveries in 2019 and is starting certification and compliance work on the vehicle this spring, yet how or where the company will produce this truck remains a mystery. It will be built in the United States with what Holland described as “a well-known and established partner with deep experience in building on- and off-road vehicles.” You won’t see Bollinger looking overseas for production locations, either. “It is important to us that the design and engineering—which was started and continues in New York—as well as the manufacturing and production stay right here in the U.S.,” said Holland.

The idea of all-electric off-roading might sound good to some but not to others. Conservationists might appreciate how there’s no rumbling exhaust to scare wildlife, no tailpipe to scrape, no oil pan to shear off, and no driveshaft to maim when you’re high centered. On the other hand, off-roading while in need of a charge could bring a whole new meaning to the term “range anxiety”—there are no jerrycans, and there’s no possibility that any AAA charging truck will come to the rescue after you’ve scrambled over a rocky ridge.

Bollinger faces a rather narrow window in which to prove it’s not just peddling vaporware. Its closest rival in the short term could prove to be Workhorse, an Indiana company that is courting the fleet market and has already received a 200-truck order for its all-electric W-15 from UPS. Like Bollinger’s truck, the W-15 isn’t a conversion vehicle and has completely new underpinnings not shared with any other vehicle. There’s also a Tesla pickup in the works—all electric, of course, and anticipated to go on sale in two to three years. And if this proves to be a viable segment, don’t think truck stalwarts Ford, General Motors, and Ram are going to sit idly by. Although now barren, the electric-truck landscape could flourish in just a few years.
