So to coincide with International Wallpaper Week, which starts on Monday, retailers such as B&Q and Homebase are offering in-store events and advice on how to use wallpaper to easily transform a living space.

The problem of decorating rented property has also been tackled by wallpaper and wall art company Graham & Brown, which makes the strippable wallpaper Superfresco Easy.

In a survey it discovered that 85 per cent of renters in the UK would wallpaper their homes given the opportunity and that 38 per cent had been put off renting a property because of its décor.

Backing the campaign to use more wallpaper at home is interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, who also has some “rent-spiration” tips.

“If your landlord is against the idea of decorating, bring the same pops of pattern and colour to a room with wallpapered plywood panels. You can lean these against walls or use no-hole picture hanging strips for a similar effect.”

Mirrors will lighten a room and give the appearance of space and he adds: “Fulllength mirrors are fantastic at the end of corridors and a selection of smaller mirrors look great when hung together on a wall.”

You can also switch cupboard handles and lampshades, as long as you return the originals when you leave and Laurence suggests using large rugs to cover floors, adding wisely: “Rugs will protect the carpets – and your deposit – during your own tenancy.”

There’s more decorating advice for renters from upcycler Max McMurdo, who has shared some tips that won’t upset the landlord for this week’s National Recycling Week.

“It’s often the little things that make a huge difference to the look and feel of a space so adding small creative touches or looking at old treasures in a new light is a great place to start if you’re thinking of freshening up a home,” says McMurdo.

According to a survey by online loan firm Sunny, renters who decorate their homes – with or without permission – spend an average of £880.

But McMurdo, who found fame pitching his eco-friendly furniture design business Reestore on BBC2’s Dragons’ Den, suggests spending the money on things you can take away when you leave, such as colourful cushions and curtains.

“Having a landlord who doesn’t allow you to paint your property doesn’t mean you can’t spruce up your rooms with colour,” he says.

“If you’re feeling adventurous, visit your local haberdashery store for cheaper cuts of fabric which can be used for cushion covers, curtains or even re-upholstering older pieces of furniture.”

Most landlords won’t allow tenants to knock nails into walls to hang pictures so he suggests using adhesive picture strips and adds: “Create your own photo frames by using old scrap pieces of wood or pallets. You can buy cheap blank canvases and paint at many shops – or frame the things that are important to you to create a gallery wall that doesn’t leave a mark.”

Putting up shelves is also a big no-no, so he suggests leaning an old wooden ladder against a wall: “It’s a great way to gain height and create useful shelving.”

As for kitchens, he says: “If you’re after some fresh flooring, consider some lino sheets which can be placed over tiles.”

Star Wars 8: ‘I CAN’T watch it’ Tearful Mark Hamill reveals most UPSETTING Last Jedi scene https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-i-cant-watch-it-tearful-mark-hamill-reveals-most-upsetting-last-jedi-scene/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-i-cant-watch-it-tearful-mark-hamill-reveals-most-upsetting-last-jedi-scene/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 23:47:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-i-cant-watch-it-tearful-mark-hamill-reveals-most-upsetting-last-jedi-scene/

It’s no secret that Star Wars Episode 8 upset a lot of the fans.

Hamill has also been blunt about his opposition to many of the decisions made by director Rian Johnsn regarding Luke Skywalker.

In a new interview, the actor has been speaking about some of the most personally upsetting and emotional moments in the movie.

The new documentary The Director and the Jedi already revealed his tears at being reunited with Frank Oz to film the Yoda cameo, but there was one moment that hit Hamill even harder.

It is no surprise that he is talking about Luke’s farewell to Leia.

Being interviewed by Entertainment Tonight to promote the digital download and home entertainment release of The Last Jedi, Hamill opened up about what is sure to become another iconic Star Wars scene. He also revealed that the most heartbreaking moment of all, the brotherly kiss, was improvised.

Hamill said: “I didn’t decide it and say, ‘Can I do this?’ I mean, in the take , I don’t know if we rehearsed it or not, but it just happened. I was standing up and they weren’t ready for it. They said, ‘No, do that again.’ And we did it for a second take, and like I said, it was just spontaneous.”

Hamill added: “It was really momentous for me because Luke was saying goodbye to his sister forever.

“I can’t watch that scene. It just, you know, takes me out of the movie completely. I’ll get over it, but she’ll be forever missed and she’s irreplaceable.”

He also revealed that his cheeky farewell wink to C-3PO was also unscripted: “Even that. I don’t remember doing that and I did. You see that’s the best kind of spontaneity you can have. There’s a solemnity to that moment and you don’t want to trivialise it.”

Mike McEwen books ticket to Olympic trials final after upsetting Brad Gushue https://briefnews.eu/mike-mcewen-books-ticket-to-olympic-trials-final-after-upsetting-brad-gushue/ https://briefnews.eu/mike-mcewen-books-ticket-to-olympic-trials-final-after-upsetting-brad-gushue/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 05:03:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mike-mcewen-books-ticket-to-olympic-trials-final-after-upsetting-brad-gushue/

OTTAWA — Don’t call it a breakthrough win for Mike McEwen.

The Manitoba skip says anyone who’s followed curling for years knows his team is capable of winning the big game.

McEwen proved them right on Saturday, winning the biggest game of his career in Ottawa in the Roar of the Rings semifinal against Brad Gushue.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt so comfortable,” McEwen said after the win.

“Being able to handle whatever anxiety was there, I’ve never been able to do it better in this arena setting under that pressure.”

It wasn’t easy, either.

Gushue and McEwen traded brilliant shots throughout the game. His big break came in the eighth end. McEwen forced Gushue into making a difficult double to score one, possibly two points.

Gushue just missed, but it was costly. McEwen stole two points and cruised down the finish to a 6-4 win.

Mike McEwen steals way to Roar of the Rings final over Brad Gushue0:40

“That’s as good as I’ve ever seen him,” Gushue said. “If he plays like that in the final he wins for fun.”

McEwen finished the game curling 88 per cent.

“I thought our patience was key in the first half. We just waited. We wiggled out of trouble at times,” McEwen said. “I came up with some key ones that maybe I haven’t made that good in a while.”

Never been to the big dance

While McEwen doesn’t like the breakthrough word, it’s somewhat fitting for what he’s embarking on.

He’s never played in a final at a Brier or at a trials. He was close at the Brier last year.

In fact, he finished first in the round robin with a 9-2 record. But then the wheels came off. He lost to Gushue in the 1 vs. 2 game. Then, in the semifinal against Kevin Koe, disaster struck.

He was in control of the game leading 5-3 with hammer in the eighth end and gave up a steal of two. The game eventually went to an extra end and McEwen gave up another steal to lose a heartbreaker.

“I wasn’t patient. I was feeling tense that game. I didn’t feel like I had the touch I wanted. There were shot calls that were forcing the issue that cost us,” McEwen said.

“There are lessons to learn from that game.”

In a lot of ways, McEwen says if they don’t get in the way of themselves and become swallowed up by the moment, they’ll win the final against Koe. He hopes some of their past lessons pay dividends when they need it the most.

“I just hope this is our time. We’ve done everything we’ve wanted to do in terms of ticking the boxes to be ready for here.”

Performing under pressure

Kevin Koe, Marc Kennedy, Brent Laing and Ben Hebert have 36 Brier appearances between them. They’ve won Briers and worlds — not to mention Kennedy and Hebert’s Olympic gold.

They have the big game experience.

On the other side, McEwen, B.J. Neufeld, Matt Wozniak and Denni Neufeld are walking into territory they’ve never been in before.

B.J. says it still hasn’t hit him that they’re playing to go to the Olympics but he loves what he’s seeing from his skip.

“Mike is a great player,” B.J. said. “He’s had some amazing games but has he had this type of game in this type of moment? Probably not. I’m glad he picked this moment to bring out his best. He’s in a really good place.”

McEwen would agree.

He said he was feeling nerves all throughout the night and into Saturday’s game. But unlike past semifinals, he found a way to push through it.

“It was nice to perform under those circumstances. It’s been a long time coming since we’ve played for a maple leaf and it’s finally here.”

He might not like the word breakthrough, but should Mike McEwen win Sunday night to represent Canada at the Olympics, there’s no other way to describe it.

It would be a breakthrough of Olympic proportion and he’d probably be okay with that.

“I think we can go out there and play free. We just have to go out there and play the shots and the outcome will be what it will be.”

Upsetting The Status Quo https://briefnews.eu/upsetting-the-status-quo/ https://briefnews.eu/upsetting-the-status-quo/#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2017 03:31:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/upsetting-the-status-quo/

President Donald Trump has decided to formally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin what is expected to be a years-long process of moving the US embassy to the contested city, three senior US officials confirmed in a call with reporters on Tuesday.

The move breaks with the longstanding international consensus to refrain from recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital until it brokers a peace agreement with the Palestinians, but satisfies a key campaign pledge Trump made in a March 2016 speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group.

“We view this as a recognition of reality,” a senior official said.

The decision followed a series of phone calls Trump held with key US partners in Europe and the Middle East who urged the president against making the symbolically fraught move. But Trump’s Middle East team, which includes his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his longtime-lawyer Jason Greenblatt, worked in lockstep with the Israelis who have hailed the “historic” decision as a boon to their efforts to win international recognition of Jerusalem as its “eternal capital.”

In anticipation of mass protests in response to the move, the State Department issued a travel warning to US employees and their families not to visit Jerusalem’s Old City or the West Bank, including Bethlehem and Jericho.

Middle East experts said the move jeopardizes the Trump administration’s ability to earn the trust of the Palestinians who strongly opposed the move, but senior US officials said Trump remained committed to helping mediate a final peace deal.

They also said Trump’s decision, set to be unveiled during a speech on Wednesday, does not have any impact on the US view of the appropriate boundaries of Jerusalem, which they said will be subject to final status negotiations.

The Palestinians also claim Jerusalem, which is divided into an Israeli west wide and an Arab east side, as their capital. While Israel long ago annexed the Arab neighborhoods, the international community has never recognized that annexation and considers east Jerusalem to be occupied Palestinian territory.

“This announcement doesn’t change US policy over the specific borders or dimensions” of Jerusalem, one official said.

The officials said Trump would direct the State Department to begin the process of moving the US embassy, currently located in Tel Aviv, to Jerusalem, but they predicted the move would take years and not be completed by the end of Trump’s first term.

“As a practical matter, no embassy is constructed today … in shorter than three or four years,” an official said.

The officials said US officials have not yet determined where in Jerusalem a new embassy would be placed.

The timeline leaves open the possibility that Trump’s successor could reverse the decision. Several past presidents have promised to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the US embassy only to change course while in office at the urging of career diplomats, top security officials and longtime allies.

Once Trump places such a move in motion, reversing the decision would likely face push back from pro-Israel lobbyists and members of Congress.

Still, leading progressives such as Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders spoke out forcefully against the move on Tuesday.

“There’s a reason why all past US administrations have avoided making this move, and why leaders from all over the world, including a group of former Israeli ambassadors, have warned Trump against doing it: It would dramatically undermine the prospects for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, and severely, perhaps irreparably, damage the United States’ ability to broker that peace,” Sanders said in a statement.

When repeatedly asked how the designation would advance US interests, senior Trump officials struggled to provide an answer.

“The physical location of the American embassy is not material to a peace deal. It’s not an impediment to peace and it’s not a facilitator of peace,” a senior official said.

Palestinian advocates have said the absence of any cogent arguments in defending this widely expected move is telling.

“The reason they are struggling to explain how this serves US interests is simply because it does not. The impact of this will have no qualitative effect on the US-Israel relationship because it’s already strong but it will have a negative effect on US relations with allies in the region,” said Yousef Munayyer, the executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights.

After reports indicated that Trump would recognize Jerusalem, the Washington office of the Palestinian Liberation Organization cancelled its Christmas reception planned for Wednesday on Capitol Hill. “It planned to bring a live-stream video of Christian leaders and the children of Bethlehem with a Christmas message of peace,” the PLO office said in a statement. “Out of care for our leaders and children, it might be unsuitable for them to speak and sing shortly after the possibility of an announcement that runs counter to the message of peace.”

Don’t say cheese! Swiss village bans photos of scenery to avoid upsetting people who can’t visit https://briefnews.eu/dont-say-cheese-swiss-village-bans-photos-of-scenery-to-avoid-upsetting-people-who-cant-visit/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-say-cheese-swiss-village-bans-photos-of-scenery-to-avoid-upsetting-people-who-cant-visit/#respond Wed, 31 May 2017 13:30:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-say-cheese-swiss-village-bans-photos-of-scenery-to-avoid-upsetting-people-who-cant-visit/

A Swiss village has banned taking photos of its picturesque landscape, saying people who can’t visit might feel “unhappy” when viewing them online. Social media users have snapped back, with some saying the village should be relocated to North Korea.

Authorities in the village of Bergün/Bravuogn, which has a German/Romansh double name, made their decision at a municipal assembly, the village tourist office said in a statement on Tuesday.

“It is scientifically proven that beautiful holiday photos on social media make the viewers unhappy because they cannot be there themselves,” the statement added. They especially deemed this to be the case with Bergün/Bravuogn, which has “a particularly picturesque landscape to offer.”

“Bergün/Bravuogn is beautiful. We don’t want to make people outside the community unhappy by sharing social media photos of our picturesque landscape, and we cordially invite you to visit Bergün to experience it for yourself,” Mayor Peter Nicolay’s office said in a press release.

“I am very pleased that the inhabitants of Bergün have the happiness of all people at heart. That makes me very proud,” it added.

Those who are not as concerned with humanity’s happiness – and continue to take photographs of the village’s landscape – will pay a “symbolic” fine of 5 Swiss francs ($ 5), according to the authorities.

“Mayor Peter Nicolay calls upon all inhabitants and visitors of Bergün/Bravuogn to respect the cordial prohibition of photography and to enjoy the unique landscape of Bergün with their own eyes.”

Somewhat ironically, the ban itself made social media users unhappy. Many called it “idiotic” and “shameful,” saying that tourists will simply stop visiting the village.

“In general, a person has a right to take photos of nature everywhere… If you want to make it illegal, relocate [your village] to North Korea. No doubt they will welcome you there,” one person sarcastically wrote.

“There is neither common sense, nor [reason] for this law. I will take and share photos further, and gladly will pay a fine,” one person wrote. “I … hope it [the ban] will immediately be lifted.”
Some people wondered if the ban would concern webcams, security cameras or police surveillance operations.

Bergün/Bravuogn’s tourist office addressed all the comments, admitting that “the new law would not appeal to everyone.”
Others, though, got the picture and suspected clever PR… and were at least partly correct.

“In the background of course the idea is that everyone talks about Bergün. So it’s a combination of both – we made the law and also there’s some marketing [aim] behind it,” Marc-Andrea Barandun, the Bergün/Bravuogn director of tourism, told the Local. He added that it was unlikely that anyone would actually be fined.

Bergün/Bravuogn has some 700 inhabitants. The 67km Albula Railway which crosses the village has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.

Kirsten Dunst reveals upsetting Colin Farrell sex scene: 'I really didn't like doing it' https://briefnews.eu/kirsten-dunst-reveals-upsetting-colin-farrell-sex-scene-i-really-didnt-like-doing-it/ https://briefnews.eu/kirsten-dunst-reveals-upsetting-colin-farrell-sex-scene-i-really-didnt-like-doing-it/#respond Sat, 08 Apr 2017 01:20:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kirsten-dunst-reveals-upsetting-colin-farrell-sex-scene-i-really-didnt-like-doing-it/

Most women probably wouldn’t object to shooting a sex scene with the Irish heartthrob under normal circumstances, but this doesn’t sound like a cosy romcom.

The film is a steamy Gothic thriller set on a plantation in America’s Deep South during the Civil War.

Farrell’s handsome wounded stranger is taken in by a group of women who start to compete for his affections.

Unfortunately, events soon take a rather dark turn.

The first trailer hints at the nature of Dunst’s scene and she revealed more to E1 News.

The actress said: “We had an intense scene. I am on the floor and my clothes are being ripped. I don’t like it, I don’t like it.

“To be honest, I’m like, ‘Let’s get this over with as fast as possible.'”

Fortunately, Farrell was also aware that the scene would be difficult for his female co-star.

Farrell said: “It’s harder for women and women have in the history of cinema been more exploited of course, through the means of sexuality, by men than men have. So, it’s situations like that, any love scenes that I’ve been a party to over the years, you just [do] whatever your female dance partner needs.”

“I really think a woman should be the boss completely in those scenes, whatever she needs to make her comfortable and allow her to have the freedom to do the job she needs to do.”

Dunst also praised Coppola’s handling of the tricky shoot.

The actress said that having a female director made all the difference as Coppola was sensitive to her discomfort and shot the scene as quickly as possible.

The movie also stars Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning and is based on the 1971 original of the same name.
