“I don’t know when we’re going to overthrow them. It could be in a few days, months, a couple of years, but it’s going to happen. They’re going to be overthrown, the people of Iran have obviously had enough,” said Giuliani at a so-called ‘Iran Uprising Summit’ held by the Organization of Iranian-American Communities in New York.

Speaking to members of Iranian expat and dissident communities in the US, who are seeking political change in Iran, the 74-year-old lawyer praised Donald Trump’s bullish approach towards Tehran, boasting that sanctions slapped on Iran, after the White House unilaterally withdrew from the internationally-backed nuclear deal in May, are stalling the country’s economy and damaging Iranians’ lives.

“The sanctions are working. The currency is going to nothing … These are the conditions that lead to successful revolution, and, God willing, non-violent revolution,” he said.

While the US administration has vowed to maintain economic pressure on the Islamic Republic with more sanctions to come into force on November 4 to target Iran’s energy sector, the State Department immediately distanced itself from Giuliani’s comments, stressing that Trump’s personal lawyer does not speak for the administration.

The imposition of sanctions has impacted Iran’s economy and caused the country’s currency to drop in value. The worsening socio-economic conditions have also led to street demonstrations across the country. While Tehran has acknowledged the people’s right to demonstrate, it urged the public to do so in a civil and a peaceful manner. At the same time, the Iranian leadership pinned the blame for sporadic violence on the US and their allies, accusing them of pushing for a regime change in the country.

While Trump has never been shy of supporting the opposition in Iran, his National Security Advisor John Bolton recently noted that a straightforward “regime change” in the country is not being considered by the administration. “Just to be clear, regime change in Iran is not American policy. But what we want is massive change in the regime’s behavior,” Bolton told Reuters in August.

Giuliani’s anti-Tehran comments came immediately after the Iranian supreme leader accused the US and its regional “puppets” of instigating the deadly shooting attack at a military parade in the city of Ahvaz that killed at least 25 people on Saturday.

After staying silent for hours following the atrocity, the US State Department finally issued a statement saying that Americans “stand with the Iranian people against the scourge of radical Islamic terrorism.” At the same time, however, National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis added that the “regime in Tehran” should better focus on keeping its citizens “safe at home.”

Overwatch skins: Winston, Mei and Sombra’s new event outfits for Uprising 2018 https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 03:36:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/

While we have already seen the new outfits coming for Hanzo, Mei and Sombra, today also saw another reveal made by Blizzard for the returning Uprising 2018 event.

New Overwatch skins for Winston were unveiled tonight on the official Twitter account.

It fits in with the ones already revealed for both Sombra and Doomfist, which are a lot different from the designs used for Mei and Hanzo.

Fans can expect around 60 new cosmetic item to go live tomorrow, with a mix of fresh emotes, sprays and skins being added to the game.

That’s without including all the returning outfits from last year’s Uprising event, which included some fan favourites.

Other events have seen older skins cost 1,000 credits, instead of the usual 3,000 credits for Legendary items.

It should also be noted that other events saw prices set at 750 credits for Epic skins, 225 credits for Rare cosmetics and 75 credits for common items.

And not only will there be a new seasonal Retribution event included that chronicles a Blackwatch mission in Venice, but we’re also set to get a nifty new feature.

Blizzard have now confirmed that a special option is being added to the game on April 10 that will help players to avoid peers they deem a bit too toxic.

Players will soon be able to add players to an in-game list so that they can avoid being paired as teammates again.

It’s been available on the PTR since late March and looks set to make its debut this week on live servers.

Game directer Jeff Kaplan spoke about the feature in a recent developers update, telling fans it was being put in place “when you’re frustrated with a teammate but it’s not necessarily a reportable offensive.”

It appears to be something to use against those you find annoying, rather than offensive.

Those who do use this option a lot may well see delay loading into games, especially if they’re a high-ranking player.

The field starts to thin out for matchmaking when you reach a certain tier, while Blizzard have also confirmed that those who have been avoided a certain amount of times will also see a warning pop up about it.

The game did have the avoid player feature just after launch but it was removed due to Blizzard believing it was being used to filter out the better players.

“As with all of our systems, we’re paying very close attention,” Kaplan said.

“We hope that you enjoy having more control over your experience in Overwatch, and we’re going to continue to bring features to you that let you craft the experience exactly how you want it to be.”

“Travel eight years into the past and join Blackwatch as they seek to capture a high-ranking member of the Talon organization,” reads a Blizzard blog post.

“Fight in the streets of Venice as Genji, Moira, McCree, or Reyes (later known as Reaper) to complete the mission and unlock pieces of the past with over 100 items from last year and 60 new ones—including highlight intros, emotes, sprays, and more.”

The original Uprising event missions which focused on Tracer’s first mission as an Overwatch agent will also be returning this for the limited run.

Fans can also expect the return of the popular Combat Medic Ziegler, Cadet Oxton, Talon and Chief Engineer Lindholm skins.

Returning skins are typically available at a discounted price, so if you’ve got any spare in-game cash, it’s worth waiting until next week to spend it.

Overwatch Uprising 2018 news: Blizzard teases HUGE new event – but it's not Battle Royale https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-uprising-2018-news-blizzard-teases-huge-new-event-but-its-not-battle-royale/ https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-uprising-2018-news-blizzard-teases-huge-new-event-but-its-not-battle-royale/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 12:26:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/overwatch-uprising-2018-news-blizzard-teases-huge-new-event-but-its-not-battle-royale/

developer Blizzard has something big in store for its Uprising 2018 event.

The next major Overwatch event , and it could come with a brand new mission.

Blizzard’s latest Uprising 2018 trailer starts by looking at last year’s mission, codenamed ‘Archives File 0382’.

The video confirms that the King’s Row mission from 2017 will return alongside last year’s skins and items.

However, just as the video is about to end, the computer begins to access ‘Archives File 0274’.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan previously said that this year’s Uprising event would incorporate “some really big ideas”, so a new mission seems like a certainty.

In the meantime, you can check out the full list of returning Uprising skins in the gallery below. Express Online will add new and leaked skins in the run up to the event.

One thing we can be almost certain of is that the new Uprising mission won’t have battle royale rules.

Jeff Kaplan recently told that battle royale isn’t a great fit for Overwatch.

While Blizzard hasn’t ruled out a battle royale game mode for Overwatch, Kaplan said it would take a lot of design and tech work.

“Overwatch is a game about heroes, and part of what makes the core loop work in a battle royale game is the search, the looting, and the fairness that everybody’s sort of equal,” he said.

The size of the game’s maps are also a stumbling block when it comes to Overwatch Battle Royale.

“I think there are also some technical challenges of large, open game spaces,” he continued.

“Our primary engagement distance is usually around 15 to 40 meters. The Hanamura dojo point B is 45 meters across. I don’t think people realize how tiny it is. Part of what makes Fortnite and PUBG so awesome is that you can have these really long engagement distances.

“Building those systems and getting that many players—I think battle royale for Overwatch starts to get into new game territory.”

James Gunn Reveals His Deleted ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Cameo https://briefnews.eu/james-gunn-reveals-his-deleted-pacific-rim-uprising-cameo/ https://briefnews.eu/james-gunn-reveals-his-deleted-pacific-rim-uprising-cameo/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 12:32:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/james-gunn-reveals-his-deleted-pacific-rim-uprising-cameo/ james gunn pacific rim uprising cameo

Forget cancelling the apocalypse, Pacific Rim Uprising‘s worst transgression was that it probably cancelled the party of the year.

Steven S. DeKnight‘s sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 action monsters-vs.-robots flick nearly had an out-of-this-world cameo from none other than Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. But sadly, a James Gunn Pacific Rim Uprising cameo was not meant to be.

Gunn revealed his secret Pacific Rim Uprising cameo in a tweet on Monday, after the mecha-movie sequel shot to the top of the box office.

“Congrats to [Steven S. DeKnight] on the Number One movie this weekend, Pacific Rim Uprising!” Gunn wrote in his Twitter caption, before revealing the real humdinger: He was supposed to make a cameo in the movie, before it ended up on the cutting room floor.

“Here’s a shot of me & [Jennifer Holland] from the scene we shot for it (yes, really),” Gunn said. “I’m sure they deleted it because they want to spin off my marvelous DJ dancing into its own movie!”

There’s a lot going on in this picture. First is Gunn’s ridiculous hairstyle and wardrobe, one that suggests he’s a flamboyant DJ who may not actually be good at his job. But he does have a beautiful woman on his arm, played by actress Jennifer Holland.

It’s likely that this scene would have happened toward the beginning of the film, when we’re first introduced to John Boyega‘s Jake Pentacost, who’s on a hedonistic spiral of hard partying before his adopted sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) finds and recruits him for the revived Jaeger program.

We may never know for sure, but at least we’ll always have this glorious picture to remind us of what could have been.

Pacific Rim Uprising also stars Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona and Nick E. Tarabay. It’s currently playing in theaters.

Here is the official synopsis for Pacific Rim Uprising:

Jake Pentecost is a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous Kaiju. Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through cities and bring the world to its knees, Jake is given one last chance by his estranged sister, Mako Mori, to live up to his father’s legacy.

‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Spoiler Review: The Saturday Morning Cartoon Blockbuster Warm-Up We Need https://briefnews.eu/pacific-rim-uprising-spoiler-review-the-saturday-morning-cartoon-blockbuster-warm-up-we-need/ https://briefnews.eu/pacific-rim-uprising-spoiler-review-the-saturday-morning-cartoon-blockbuster-warm-up-we-need/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 15:02:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pacific-rim-uprising-spoiler-review-the-saturday-morning-cartoon-blockbuster-warm-up-we-need/ Pacific Rim Uprising Spoiler Review

(In our Spoiler Reviews, we take a deep dive into a new release and get to the heart of what makes it tick…and every story point is up for discussion. In this entry: Steven S. DeKnight’s Pacific Rim Uprising.)

When it was announced that Guillermo del Toro wouldn’t be coming back for a sequel to his 2013 sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim, fans of the original movie were understandably worried. Sure, the idea of giant monsters called kaiju battling against giant pilot-controlled robots sounds like it sells itself, but del Toro brought his signature style and passion for monsters and epic fantastical imagery to bring it to life in spectacular fashion.

Pacific Rim Uprising is certainly not a Guillermo del Toro movie, but it benefits from taking place in a world he created that’s rich with mythology. Thankfully, Steven S. DeKnight, along with co-writers Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder and T.S. Nowlin, jumps into this sandbox with an engaging expansion of that mythology, advancements of the wild sci-fi concepts introduced in the first movie, some scrappy new characters, and tremendous action sequences that surpass the thrills and excitement of the first film’s monstrous battles.

Pacific Rim Uprising

Pacific Rim Aftermath

Pacific Rim Uprising begins by setting the stage for the world we’re returning to. It’s been 10 years since the events of the first movie. The kaiju haven’t returned since then, but that hasn’t stopped the Pan Pacific Defense Corps (PPDC) from being prepared for when they eventually do.

There are more advanced Jaegers equipped with stronger, higher-tech weapons. Some citizens have even taken to tracking down older Jaeger technology to build their own custom Jaegers, and with no kaiju to fight, that leaves the advanced Jaegers to police junkyards and abandoned cities left destroyed by previous battles. However, Jaeger pilots are facing a crisis of their own as the company Shao Industries is trying to create an army of remotely controlled drones to handle the possible return of the kaiju.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world has moved on from monsters. Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) in particular seems to be living a life like some kind of makeshift sci-fi Scarface. He’s not doing kilos of cocaine, but he’s partying poolside in a partially destroyed mansion next to the skeleton of a dead kauji, dancing the night away, shaking off hangovers during the day. He’s financing his wild days by selling scrapped Jaeger tech to shady individuals on the black market.

Honestly, I could have watched an entire series unfold in a world like this. It’s not a post-apocalyptic world since the rest of the globe has far more advanced technology with their own Jaegers fully prepared to take on kaiju. But it’s one that is unquestionably changed by the destruction brought by the last kaiju attack.

The world in Pacific Rim Uprising is certainly a departure from that of Pacific Rim. Some negative reviews have touted that it lacks the flair of Guillermo del Toro’s rich world building. However, I think the film properly evolves the world because of how the things change after not having to worry about these kaiju attacks for 10 years. It’s not unlike the kind of world we see in Independence Day: Resurgence, which doesn’t sound like a favorable comparison, but this world makes far more sense and has significantly more style. This is Top Gun meets Pacific Rim in a bright, globally patriotic post-9/11 world where we’ve grown too complacent with our victory. Defense is more about business than survival. Jaegers look sleek and cool and come equipped with the latest weaponry, but they’re still outmatched by their enemy.

Pacific Rim Uprising

A New Surrogate Brother and Sister

I’ll be the first to admit that not all the characters work in Pacific Rim Uprising. Specifically, Scott Eastwood is the least charismatic mannequin in a warehouse full of mannequins, and the love triangle that is half-heartedly attempted between his character Nate Lambert, Adria Arjona‘s character Jules Reyes and John Boyega’s Jake Pentecost is a complete dud both romantically and comedically.

But at the same time, Jake Pentecost does have a relationship that works wonderfully, and that’s as a surrogate brother to a feisty scrapper named Amara Namani (played by Cailee Spaeny). Their two paths cross when Amara steals a Jaeger power core that Jake was trying to sell to some shady customers. When Jake ends up stumbling upon Amara’s tiny, stocky custom Jaeger, appropriately named Scrapper, he ends up being chased by the PPDC, but sees how well Amara handles herself as a pilot, not to mention showing innovation with her little Jaeger by giving it some Sonic the Hedgehog-style rolling capabilities to evade the larger, advanced Jaegers.

John Boyega and Cailee Spaeny have outstanding chemistry in this movie. The fast-talking back and forth these two have when they’re at odds upon first meeting is just the beginning of a delightful brother/sister dynamic. Eventually, Jake becomes the brotherly mentor that Amara needs as she struggles with coming to terms with her tragic past (her family was killed in front of her eyes in a kaiju attack), leading her to have a little trouble with authority. But as Jake himself shows, that’s exactly what helps her stay strong and makes her one of the best cadets. This dynamic also helps keep an emotional core between characters after Pentecost’s adoptive sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) meets her demise.

Furthermore, what I like about the introduction of Amara is how she fits into the expansion of the world’s mythology, but will also likely serve to expand upon how the PPDC will proceed when they take their fight to the kaiju instead of waiting for them to come back to Earth yet again. Her custom Jaeger Scarpper shows potential for a team of giant Jaegers and little, more versatile Jaegers that can more effectively battle the kaiju in more ways than just matching their size and strength.

John Boyega on ‘Pacific Rim Uprising,’ ‘Blade,’ and More [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 18:24:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/john-boyega-on-pacific-rim-uprising-blade-and-more-interview/ John Boyega interview

Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost cast a long shadow in 2013’s Pacific Rim. He was a military man willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good. But Jake Pentecost is not like his father. In Pacific Rim Uprising, Jake is a scavenger who’s happy to ignore his father’s sacrifice – until he’s thrust into battle himself.

For 25-year-old John Boyega, Jake is different from Finn (Star Wars), Moses (Attack the Block), or any character he’s played yet. At the movie’s press junket earlier this month, I sat down with Boyega at the Universal Studios lot to talk about Jake’s swagger, the notion of legacy, the challenges of producing a sequel of this size, and his personal favorite ice cream toppings (it’ll make sense when you see the movie).

John Boyega Interview

This movie deals with the concept of legacy. As an actor, does that idea of legacy factor in to the choices you make when picking projects to be a part of?

Definitely. Specifically, artistic legacy is something artists in general find important. That quantitative release, what it does to the audience, how they perceive your performance, all that kind of stuff. It matters to me, definitely. Being involved in sci-fi, and anything I’ve done, really, has been a blatant and purposeful decision.

Jake has a swagger to him that we haven’t really seen from you before. Was that a particular aspect of the character that you connected with?

I loved, loved Jake’s swagger and the freedom of Jake. I wanted to implement that, because it’s so important in the writing that this came across as, ‘This guy is a rebel.’ My thing coming in was, ‘How do we layer this? How do you make it specific? An individual who doesn’t care what anybody thinks of him, and make him free?’ Jake embodies a free human being. He just doesn’t care.

You not only starred in this movie, but you produced it as well. What was that experience like for you?

It was a fantastic experience. I’ve always been the type to watch the special features of a Blu-ray disc or to jump into B-roll to see how it actually works on the set. I’m always intrigued by the various different departments that come together on a production like this, and the producing role, guarding and then guiding a project from its birth all the way up to its death on Blu-ray (laughs) was something I always wanted to be a part of.

How early did you come on? I know Guillermo del Toro wrote a few drafts very early in the process.

Yeah, I wasn’t involved when Guillermo del Toro was involved as a director, but once he stepped down and was producing and they hired Steve DeKnight, Steve DeKnight had given a few drafts and I came on board. We were still going through refining the parts and the roles. All the way through to working with pre-vis for the CG element, and then going to costumes, all the way into marketing. We’re still at it now!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome from a producing standpoint?

The time. Time. (Sighs) It really felt like Han Solo was (laughs) establishing this whole thing. ‘Don’t tell me the odds!’ Because Lord, the odds were up against us in terms of how much time we had. Of course, casting gets really complicated when actors are tied to a schedule to do other projects. So you’re going around location scouting, trying to make all these things work out in a set time, and for me, it just got real crazy.

star wars the last jedi finn and rose

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees Finn essentially go from somebody who’s running away to being a Resistance leader. Han Solo became a general when he stopped running in Return of the Jedi. Have you talked to J.J.? Can you tease the next step for Finn?

I really don’t know, but I’m going to try to meet him on my trip to L.A. before I head to China just for him to talk me through what his plans are, because I’m so intrigued to hear what he wants to do.

The Force Awakens didn’t feature a romantic relationship between Finn and Rey, and I think a lot of people loved that. But it seems like those same fans now really want to see Finn in a romance, whether it’s with Rey or Rose –

(Both at the same time): – or Poe.

Or Chewbacca, or anyone. You guys are going savage! (laughs)

(laughs) Why do you think that is, and who would you like to see Finn end up with?

Because Finn is the one character, for me, who has a distinct, unique relationship with everybody. He had this kind of banterous relationship with Han, then he has this loving relationship with Rey. Now with Rose, it feels like he has this great relationship. Personally? Rey. Yeah, Rey.

I think some people will be happy to hear you say that. I want to get back to Uprising for a second. A lot of this movie involves your character inside a jaeger piloting this thing, and I’m wondering how did you go about differentiating the intensity levels of the different scenes that you’re in so it didn’t all feel like a blur when you’re in this enclosed set?

Pre-visual animation. That’s what helped us schedule what we were filming on the interior scenes. What we would do is, Steve would plan out and we would roughly animate the CG world, bring in a copy on an iPad to show the actors before they do their parts. It’s very specific. Like anime, the fight moves the story forward. You’re not just there to fight. You’re fighting specifically for a reason and in a certain style. So all of the actors had to be on top of the intel. So Steve would show us, say, ‘This is what’s going on, this is the right fist that you punch, jaeger’s coming back to smash your face,’ and all the actors would just respond.

When you signed on to this movie, did you sign on for a sequel? Will we see Jake Pentecost in Pacific Rim 3 if this does well enough?

Yeah, yeah, exactly. If it does well enough, I’ll see to it.

You mentioned that the timing was the biggest challenge as a producer. What was the biggest challenge for you as an actor?

Nothing. (laughs)

Really? It was just easy for you? (laughs)

Yeah man, it was great. I love Jake. I love playing Jake. It was fun, always finding new, interesting ways of playing him. New ideas. Amping up his arrogance and cockiness was something that I really enjoyed doing. It was a good old time.

What kind of ice cream toppings do you prefer in your own life?

I mean, wish I had cookie dough. Cookie dough’s enough for me. I’m not going to add no sprinkles, but Jake – he likes sprinkles.

Blade - John Boyega

Did you happen to see the fan art of you as Blade that was making the rounds this morning? I’ve got it right here. (Shows him the photo)

[laughs] Oh wait, is this Boss Logic?

It is.

Oh yeah, my guy. What the hell? That’s a bit mad. A bit young, though. Young Blade.

If you could choose any character to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who would it be?

I really and truly don’t know. Because when I think about Blade, I think, ‘Whoa, eh, Wesley [Snipes] is coming back?’ We would all love to see Wesley come back one more time before we move on to anybody else. I don’t know. Good Lord. I think the Marvel universe is doing well right now.

A lot of times, actors start production companies to tell stories they aren’t being offered elsewhere. From a producing standpoint, are there any passion projects you’re excited about?

Yeah, definitely, and developing now, but I can’t speak about it.

Fair enough. Maybe I’ll catch up with you to talk about one of those when they get made.

Yeah! Definitely.
