Olympic Athletes from Russia delegation parade during the opening ceremony. THE International Olympic Committee executive board has recommended upholding the ban of Russia from the Pyeongchang Winter Games. The full membership will vote on the proposal later on Sunday ahead of the closing ceremony. IOC President Thomas Bach says a condition for Russia’s reinstatement is no further positive drug tests at these Olympics. Two of the four athletes who tested positive in Pyeongchang were competing as “Olympic Athletes from Russia.” Russia was banned from the Olympics because of a massive doping scandal at the 2014 Sochi Games. Meanwhile, Australia have bowed out of the four-man bobsleigh after the team of Lucas Mata, Lachlan Reidy, Hayden Smith and David Mari failed to make the top 20 after their third run. Australia’s last competitor in PyeongChang will be Jessica Yeaton in the cross-country skiing from 5pm (EDT) tonight. Join our live blog. Originally published as IOC urged to uphold Russia Games ban
Greg Kidd has had big success with his early investment in Coinbase, the cryptocurrency exchange now valued at $ 1.6 billion. Before that, he was an early investor in Twitter and Square, before their respective IPOs.
Now Kidd, a federal regulator turned entrepreneur, has invested $ 57.5 million into Uphold, a four-year-old currency exchange where traders can convert USD into traditional currency like euros as easily as they can cryptocurrencies like the red-hot bitcoin. The investment was made through his firm, Hard Yaka.
A big part of where that funding will go: Adding support to Uphold for trading in XRP, the red-hot cryptocurrency from startup Ripple, making it one of the few mainstream currency exchanges to do so.
Greg KiddIn a bigger-picture sense, Kidd’s backing is all in the name of making Uphold more secure than smaller crypto-exchanges, while simultaneously positioning it as more innovative and experimental than the $ 1.6 billion leader of the pack Coinbase, which has been cautious about adding new cryptocurrencies to its exchange.
The biggest part of Kidd’s investment is an insurance fund for Uphold’s users, which will be used to compensate users in the event of a successful cyberattack on the company. Hack attacks on cryptocurrency companies has become increasingly commonplace, as many of these exchanges sit on millions of dollars in digital assets.
Currently, Uphold only holds an extra 1% on top of its users’ deposits in reserves, according to Kidd. This will go up to 20% with the investment, the company said. While regulated institutions like banks are required to have some money on reserve, cryptocurrency exchanges aren’t regulated in the same way.
“As an ex-regulator, that seemed thin to me,” Kidd said about Uphold’s 1% reserves. “It’s fine in normal day-to-day operations, but there are a lot of hacks. And a hack could put you out of business.”
Kidd believes that guaranteeing users that they will get their money back, even in the case of a hack, could give Uphold a leg up on its competition, and prevent it from collapsing completely if things do go wrong.
“It’s to level the playing field,” said Kidd. “People just assume Coinbase has enough money and can withstand a hack. But if you’re a smaller exchange, people are like, ‘What kind of assurance do I have if something bad happens?'”
In addition to the reserves, 20% of Kidd’s investment is a cash deal to fund Uphold Labs, a research facility that Kidd hopes will be as important to the future of cryptocurrency as the legendary Bell Labs was to telecommunications and computing.
As part of Kidd’s investment, Uphold Labs has a mandate for several projects, including platform integrations with the Ripple ecosystem, as well as GlobaliD — a universal digital identity and payments company, which Kidd runs as CEO.
Ripple, where Kidd worked as chief risk officer from 2013 to 2015, is a growing blockchain-based payments company that primarily works with banks. Ripple offers its own cryptocurrency called XRP, which has exploded in the last few weeks, and is trading at around $ 1.22 — nearly 4000% from where it first started trading in April.

Kidd said that Uphold plans to add XRP trading in the near future. While XRP has had a lot of attention in the last few weeks because of major price gains, it’s not available on certain mainstream trading platforms, including Coinbase and Gemini.
Uphold’s willingness to add cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin, known in the community as “altcoins,” is one of the reasons that Kidd became interested in the company.
“Out of all the thousands of coins, someone’s going to have to decide which ones are worth making markets in, which ones are going to be compliant enough,” Kidd said. “Market interests make it worth their while.”
The final part of the investment is a warrant for a 10% stake in the company. This means Kidd has a right to buy that much of the company at a set price for a select period of time, though he retains the right to change his mind and back out.
Adrian Steckel, CEO of Uphold, said in a statement that the company will use the funding to accelerate its product development, and add new assets and “connectivity” to financial institutions and “blockchain and Ripple-centric projects.”
“This is a landmark partnership for the crypto market. We have always provided our Members with unparalleled transparency and safety, as well as the greatest choice of currencies, now we’re also giving them unprecedented asset protection,” Steckel said.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup at the weekend.
But the Portugal international made the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Ronaldo was sent-off for two yellow cards but decided to take his frustration out on referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.
He pushed the official and was immediately slapped with a five-game ban – four of those being for his treatment of the referee.
Ronaldo had launched an appeal but Spanish authorities have now decided to uphold his suspension.
Per the rules, the 32-year-old was given an automatic one-game ban for his dismissal at the Nou Camp.
But Ronaldo’s decision to push Bengoetxea will rule him out of four more matches.
That means the former Manchester United star will be absent when Real go up against Barcelona in the second leg tonight.
However, given their dominance at the weekend, Zinedine Zidane’s side are still favourites to win the Super Cup.
Ronaldo was introduced from the bench but Real looked stronge than their La Liga counterparts throughout.
Gerard Pique’s own-goal gave them the lead, before Lionel Messi levelled from the spot after Luis Suarez had gone down easily in the penalty area.
Ronaldo then struck a stunner before his red card.
And wonderkid Marco Asensio added a third with a fine strike – and is expected to start tonight.
Acknowledging that it is mostly China that will bear most of the brunt of the new economic sanctions on North Korea, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged that Beijing would not hesitate to enforce them in full.
“If we consider traditional economic relations between China and North Korea, it is China that will have to pay most of the price for implementation of the latest resolution,” Wang Yi said, speaking at the ASEAN forum in Manila on Tuesday.

The foreign minister went on to say that China is prepared to go against its own economic interests “for the sake of supporting international system of nuclear non-proliferation and to maintain peace and stability in the region.”
Wang said that China always heeds United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions on North Korea, and the latest one is no exception.
Speaking about potential ways to resolve the crisis, which has escalated recently with North Korea test-launching two suspected ICBMs in July, Wang urged all parties involved in the dispute to resume the six-party talks. The negotiations, aimed at finding peaceful solutions to the lingering crisis, included South Korea, Japan, China, the US, Russia, and North Korea. The six-party talks ended in 2009 when North Korea walked out and officially notified the International Atomic Energy Agency that it would resume its nuclear program.
Commending Washington’s recent reassurances that it is not preparing to topple Kim Jong-un or try to accelerate the reunification of the two Koreas, Wang said he hopes North Korea will follow suit and tone down its own rhetoric.
China “hopes North Korea can echo this signal from the United States,” he said, as cited by Reuters.
Speaking at the ASEAN ministerial security forum on Monday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson apparently stated one precondition for direct talks between the US and North Korea, saying that “stopping missile launches” would be “the best signal that North Korea can give us that they are prepared to talk.”
The new round of sanctions targeting exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore, and seafood are estimated to cost North Korea’s economy around $ 1 billion of its total $ 3 billion in yearly foreign trade revenue. The resolution also restricts the number of North Korean citizens working abroad, prohibits the establishment of joint ventures and investment in already existing projects.

While the resolution was approved unanimously, Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, called for dialogue, cautioning against using unilateral sanctions as an “economic chokehold.”
While urging North Korea to phase out its nuclear program, Nebenzya criticized Washington and its allies for stirring up tensions in the region by staging drills near North Korea and deploying the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile systems to South Korea.
On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s desire for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, saying that it is possible to find a solution that would be acceptable to every side involved in the conflict.
“I believe that with a sensible approach from all the players, including the US, South Korea, Japan, we will be able to find a solution that would work for all parties,” Sergey Lavrov said on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum on Tuesday, as cited by TASS.
Lavrov said that he did not see any other way out of the crisis other than through comprehensive political dialogue.
“We are convinced there is no alternative to resuming [the] political process, in particular the six-party talks,” the minister said, as cited by Sputnik, pointing out that this idea has received strong support from China.
“We will promote [the talks] in New York [at the United Nations] and on other platforms,” he said, adding that Moscow will continue to maintain bilateral contact with Pyongyang.

The Kim Dotcom-Megaupload saga seems like it will never end. Five years have passed since the flamboyant Dotcom’s indictment and arrest in New Zealand on US criminal copyright infringement charges. He’s wanted in the US in connection to the Megaupload file-sharing service he controlled before the US shuttered it in 2012.
Dotcom, while on bail, continues fighting his extradition from New Zealand to the US as part of a prolonged legal battle that could take another year or more. All the while, the US government has seized millions of dollars in Dotcom bank accounts in Hong Kong and New Zealand, as well as multiple cars, four jet skis, Dotcom’s mansion, several luxury cars, two 108-inch TVs, three 82-inch TVs, a $ 10,000 watch, and a photograph by Olaf Mueller worth more than $ 100,000. The Justice Department wants to keep all of it, too, according to a Friday filing (PDF) with the US Supreme Court.
Dotcom has challenged (PDF) the asset forfeiture to the US Supreme Court. He says the US government is abusing the so-called Fugitive Disentitlement Doctrine that essentially forbids defendants from using the court system to their advantage while they’re a fugitive.
]]>The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a motion before the Supreme Court on Thursday evening, asking the nine justices to expedite the case. If the court accepts the filing, the case could be heard at the beginning of their next term, in October.
“We have asked the Supreme Court to hear this important case and are confident that President Trump’s executive order is well within his lawful authority to keep the nation safe and protect our communities from terrorism,” DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.
The March 6 executive order sought to impose a 90-day suspension on entry into the US from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, citing terrorism risks and the perceived inability of their governments to provide appropriate security screenings. It was an update of an earlier order from January 27, which also encompassed Syria.
Muslim groups have protested the order as discriminatory, while civil rights groups such as the the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argued that it violated the US Constitution’s Establishment Clause. Reacting to the government’s filing, the ACLU vowed to fight the “hateful ban,” adding a hashtag “#NoMuslimBanEVER.”
The Supreme Court will rule whether Trump’s campaign rhetoric can be used as evidence that the executive orders were intended to discriminate against Muslims. With the addition of Justice Neil Gorsuch in April, the court is seen to have a conservative majority. Gorsuch was nominated by Trump to fill the seat vacated by the February 2016 death of Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative stalwart.
Vice President Mike Pence said he was “very confident” the Supreme Court would uphold the executive order.
“The ability to come into the United States of America is a privilege, not a right,” Pence said Friday morning on ‘Fox & Friends.’
If the Supreme Court grants the government’s emergency request, the 90-day ban would go into effect immediately, Reuters reports.
Last week, the US Appeals Court in the 4th circuit upheld the injunction against the executive order, with the majority arguing that it was motivated by bigotry rather than national security. The January 27 measure “drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination,” wrote Chief Judge Roger Gregory. Nine other judges agreed with him, while three dissented.
While agreeing with the majority’s conclusions, Judge Stephanie Thacker warned that it should have been based on actual governmental actions, not a “judicial psychoanalysis” of President Trump. Looking at his conduct on the campaign trail was “neither advisable nor necessary,” Thacker warned.
The three dissenting judges zeroed in on the same issue to accuse their colleagues of overreach, by looking past the established authority and judicial precedent to Trump’s statements about Muslims from the campaign, while he was still a private citizen.
“None of the facts or conditions recited as reasons for the issuance of the Executive Order have been challenged as untrue or illegitimate,” wrote Judge Paul V. Niemeyer. “Indeed, the plaintiffs conceded during oral argument that if another candidate had won the presidential election in November 2016 and thereafter entered this same Executive Order, they would have had no problem with the Order.”
In the filing to the Supreme Court, acting Solicitor General Jeff Wall acknowledged the “passionate political debate” on the subject, but pointed out the courts’ second-guessing of the president’s authority on national security and immigration was without precedent.
“But whatever one’s views, the precedent set by this case for the judiciary’s proper role in reviewing the president’s national-security and immigration authority will transcend this debate, this Order, and this constitutional moment,” Wall wrote, according to Reuters.
