Update, 10:30: If this is an indication of the quality of the images we should expect over the next several days, we’re in for a treat.

Original article follows.

About 24 hours prior to its collision, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) probe performed its last course correction based on commands sent by ground controllers. “It’s pointed to within a football field of the central body,” said Bobby Braun of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL). “That last maneuver was spot-on.”

The GeForce 3080 Ti.

Some users of Nvidia’s GeForce graphics cards are noticing severe performance issues after installing the Windows 11 2022 Update (aka Windows 11 22H2) that Microsoft released to the public earlier this week. As reported by Bleeping Computer, affected users have experience stuttering, inconsistent framerates, and slowdowns, even on fast PCs with modern components.

Nvidia says the problem is caused by some new Windows graphics debugging features that are enabled by mistake.

The company publicly acknowledged the issue and released a new beta version of the GeForce Experience software package that it says should fix it. This implies that the problem is with Nvidia’s add-on software rather than the GeForce drivers themselves; if you installed the drivers without the GeForce Experience software, you may not have noticed the slowdown in the first place.

Apollo update transforms the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island into a home for ‘Pixel Pals’ https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/ https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 01:09:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/apollo-update-transforms-the-iphone-14-pros-dynamic-island-into-a-home-for-pixel-pals/ The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may have only arrived yesterday but developers are already dreaming up fun and interesting use cases for Apple’s new Dynamic Island interface. Take Apollo creator Christian Selig, for instance. On Friday, he updated his Reddit client to implement support for “Pixel Pals.” The feature adds a Tamagotchi-like critter that does cute things on top of your phone’s Dynamic Island while you have Apollo open. You can even choose between multiple creatures, including a cat, dog, hedgehog, fox or axolotl.

If you don’t have an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, don’t worry. You can also add the creatures to your phone as lock screen widgets – provided you have iOS 16 installed. On the subject of iPhone widgets, Google teased one that will function as a shortcut to Chrome’s Dino game.

Selig isn’t the only person doing something creative with the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island. In a tweet spotted by The Verge, WaterMinder creator Kriss Smolka showed off Hit the Island, a game that uses the UI element for a Pong-style game. You can download it from the App Store. I can only speak for myself, but these apps make me a bit jealous I'm still rocking an iPhone 12.

Ethereum Merge has completed its long-awaited update, Buterin says https://briefnews.eu/ethereum-merge-has-completed-its-long-awaited-update-buterin-says/ https://briefnews.eu/ethereum-merge-has-completed-its-long-awaited-update-buterin-says/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 10:32:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ethereum-merge-has-completed-its-long-awaited-update-buterin-says/ Vitalik Buterin ethereum founder
Vitalik Buterin announced Thursday that Ethereum had completed its 'merge' upgrade.

  • The Ethereum blockchain completed its Merge upgrade early Thursday, cofounder Vitalik Buterin said.
  • The Merge moves the crypto to a proof-of-stake mechanism, dramatically slashing energy usage.
  • Analysts said that should draw institutional investors to ether, which rose 2.2% on the news.

The Ethereum blockchain completed its long-awaited Merge update early Thursday morning, the crypto project's cofounder Vitalik Buterin has said.

The upgrade promises to cut energy consumption for the network, which underpins the world's second-biggest cryptocurrency, ether. That should make it a more attractive asset for institutional investors, according to analysts.

"And we finalized!" Buterin said in a tweet just before 3 a.m. ET. "Happy merge all. This is a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem. Everyone who helped make the merge happen should feel very proud today."

Ether was up 2.2% after the announcement, trading at $ 1,620 at last check Thursday. Leading crypto token bitcoin was up just 0.3% at $ 20,170.

The merge, which was in the works for almost seven years, moves ethereum from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism — meaning that gas fees, or costs per transaction, will fall for the token. It should also make processing of transactions faster.

In a proof-of-stake mechanism, people are tapped to validate transactions according to the number of coins they hold and are willing to offer as a kind of down payment.

It's less energy-intensive than the proof-of-work mechanism, where computers compete against each other to solve complex puzzles to verify the network and mine ether.

Experts expect the upgrade could slash Ethereum's energy consumption by 99%. Buterin has previously said the aim is to eventually cut the blockchain's energy usage by up to 99.5%.

The upgrade could make ether more palatable to institutional investors that need to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, analysts said. It could bring in firms that were shut out of the cryptocurrency because of its heavy energy costs.

"This improvement in environmental outcomes will likely open the door for institutional ESG investors to invest in ethereum," Deutsche Bank economist Marion Labouré said. "Desire for sustainable alternatives exists in the crypto space."

The Ethereum blockchain underpins some of the biggest and most popular Web3 and crypto projects, such as NFTs and smart contracts in decentralized finance.

Ether has fallen 56% in 2022 after surging five-fold last year. The Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes have weighed on investors' appetite for riskier assets.

How to update your iPhone to iOS 16 for the redesigned, customizable lock screen and new message features https://briefnews.eu/how-to-update-your-iphone-to-ios-16-for-the-redesigned-customizable-lock-screen-and-new-message-features/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-update-your-iphone-to-ios-16-for-the-redesigned-customizable-lock-screen-and-new-message-features/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 18:07:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/how-to-update-your-iphone-to-ios-16-for-the-redesigned-customizable-lock-screen-and-new-message-features/ iPhone updating iOS surrounded by a pattern of other iPhone screens 2x1
Updating your iPhone can be done automatically or manually from Settings, or even from your computer.

  • You can update your iPhone from the Software Update section of the Settings app.
  • It's possible to set up automatic iPhone updates, so it downloads whenever a new iOS is available.
  • If your iPhone won't update to the new iOS, it might be too old or not have enough storage space.

Apple releases updates for the iPhone pretty regularly. In addition to at least one major update to the OS each year, there are generally a few incremental updates throughout the year, often to fix bugs and perform security improvements.

You can set your iPhone to update itself automatically, or manually update it yourself. Here's what you should know.

How to update your iPhone automatically

The easiest (and most secure) way to manage iPhone updates is to let your device handle it.

Here's how to make sure your iPhone is ready to update automatically:

1. Open the Settings app and tap General.

Screenshot of Settings app homepage on iPhone
Go to "General."

2. On the General page, tap Software Update.

Screenshot of General page in iPhone Settings app
Select "Software Update."

3. On the Software Update page, tap Automatic Updates.

4. To let the iPhone do everything automatically, be sure both the Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates buttons are turned on by swiping them to the right, turning them green.

Screenshot of Automatic Updates page in iPhone Settings app
Swipe the buttons to turn them green.

When both switches are turned on, your iPhone will download update files to the phone and then install them automatically overnight, when your phone is charging and locked.

How to update your iPhone manually

If you want to manage updates yourself, or the phone isn't installing updates automatically for some reason, you can do it yourself.

1. Open the Settings app and tap General.

2. On the General page, tap Software Update. Your phone will check to see if there's an update available.

3. If there is an update available, tap Download and Install. Agree to the terms and conditions, and wait while the update downloads to your phone.

4. Finally, tap Install to complete the update.

Troubleshooting tips if your iPhone won't update

If your iPhone won't update either manually or automatically, try these troubleshooting methods.

Make sure your iPhone is compatible

The latest iOS software update, iOS 15, is available for the iPhone 6S and later, as well as the iPhone SE (both first and second generation) and the iPod Touch 7th generation.

This means that if you're still using an iPhone 5S or earlier, you're out of luck. You can view a full list of compatible iPhone versions here.

Check that you have enough available storage

iOS 15 will take up about 3.24 GB of storage space, but you'll need more than that to successfully install the update. In fact, you'll need a total of about 5GB of free space on your phone to download and install the update.

To see how much free space your phone has right now, open the Settings app, tap General, and select iPhone Storage. The amount of storage you have available will be listed at the top of the iPhone Storage page.

Screenshot of iPhone Storage page in iPhone Settings app
Your available storage space will be listed at the top.

Connect to WiFi and charge your battery

Sometimes it's the little things that will block an iOS update. You should have a strong, reliable WiFi connection and your iPhone needs to have at least 50 percent of battery life remaining.

For the best results, perform the update at home or in the office, where you know you have dependable WiFi. And connect your phone to a dock or charger before starting the update.

Restart your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone can solve any number of small glitches, including corrupted files or other bugs that can interfere with an iOS update.

For details on how to restart your iPhone, see our article on restarting and force-restarting any iPhone model.

Update your iPhone from your computer

On rare occasions, you might run into a glitch and find that your iPhone can't install an update, either automatically or manually. If that happens, you can install it from a PC or Mac.

1. Plug your iPhone into your computer.

2. If you're on a PC, open iTunes. If you're on a Mac, open Finder and click your phone's name in the sidebar.

3. If you see a message on the computer asking if you want to allow the computer to access your iPhone, click Continue. Likewise, tap Trust on your iPhone.

4. In iTunes, click Library and then click the iPhone icon on the left side of the toolbar. In Finder, click General.

How to update iPhone 2
When you switch to the Library view in iTunes, you should see an icon representing your iPhone.

5. Click Check for Update.

How to update iPhone 3
Click "Check for Updates" in your iPhone's Summary info to start the update process.

6. If there's an update available, click Download and Update. Leave your phone connected for as long as it takes to update.

Still have an iPhone 6 or 5s? Update it now to fix a big security vulnerability https://briefnews.eu/still-have-an-iphone-6-or-5s-update-it-now-to-fix-a-big-security-vulnerability/ https://briefnews.eu/still-have-an-iphone-6-or-5s-update-it-now-to-fix-a-big-security-vulnerability/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 23:55:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/still-have-an-iphone-6-or-5s-update-it-now-to-fix-a-big-security-vulnerability/ Are you still carrying an iPhone 6 or 5s to save money on the latest Apple device, including the upcoming iPhone 14? If so, Apple has released a new version of iOS 12, which addresses a serious security issue you might not have known about until now.

The security issue iOS 12.5.6 sets out to fix enabled malicious websites to craft content, including PDFs and apps designed to execute unchecked code on your phone if you open it on Safari, Chrome, or another web browser. Apple said in the patch notes that it was made aware of the vulnerability after receiving a report that a bad actor has been actively exploiting it. The last update that addressed this issue was iOS 12.5.5, which Apple released in September 2021.

You might want to take a few minutes today and install iOS 12.5.6 if you want to protect yourself and your data from potentially being stolen by hackers if you accidentally stumble onto a website that attempts to run malicious code on your phone. To install the update, go to the Settings app, tap the General tab, and then go to Software update to download it. If your phone gives you a message saying that you don’t have enough space to install the update, go to your storage space and eliminate any unnecessary apps and programs to accommodate it.

The iOS 12.5.6 update is also available for the iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 and 3, and the sixth-generation iPod Touch. Security warnings like this one are usually nothing to worry about, but you can’t be too careful nowadays.

9-1-1 Spring Teaser Finds Maddie in Labor, While Lone Star Offers a Grim Update About Judd and Grace https://briefnews.eu/9-1-1-spring-teaser-finds-maddie-in-labor-while-lone-star-offers-a-grim-update-about-judd-and-grace/ https://briefnews.eu/9-1-1-spring-teaser-finds-maddie-in-labor-while-lone-star-offers-a-grim-update-about-judd-and-grace/#respond Tue, 30 Mar 2021 21:47:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/9-1-1-spring-teaser-finds-maddie-in-labor-while-lone-star-offers-a-grim-update-about-judd-and-grace/

Fans may be excited for the April 19 return of 9-1-1 (8/7c) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (9/8c), but after watching Fox’s just-released teasers for each show, you might not be so eager for their stories to progress.

First up, 9-1-1‘s teaser offers us our first look at the arrival of Maddie and Chimney’s baby, as the mother-to-be is rushed from her desk to the hospital. (“It’s all happening so fast!”)

We also get a heartbreaking glimpse of baby Nia being taken from Hen and Karen (“They’re tearing our family apart!”), as well as a fed-up Athena reacting to multiple casualties caused by a drunk driver.

Check that out below:

Over on Lone Star, we pick up with the aftermath of Judd and Grace’s car crash, with Marjan asking the question on every viewer’s mind: “What the hell happened?!” And the fact that Owen says they were in the water “too long” is doing nothing to sway our concerns for the couple.

As showrunner Tim Minear previously told us, “The premiere will pick up 18 years ago, not right where we left off. It actually is kind of [a ‘begins’ episode] for Judd and Grace. It’s the story of how they met, how they fell in love and what they mean to each other. We’ll also tell you what happened when they went off the bridge, and who — if anyone — survives.”

Watch that teaser below:

Snowpiercer’s Jennifer Connelly Teases a Chilling Melanie Update and Revealing Pre-Freeze Flashbacks https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercers-jennifer-connelly-teases-a-chilling-melanie-update-and-revealing-pre-freeze-flashbacks/ https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercers-jennifer-connelly-teases-a-chilling-melanie-update-and-revealing-pre-freeze-flashbacks/#respond Sat, 27 Feb 2021 19:13:00 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snowpiercers-jennifer-connelly-teases-a-chilling-melanie-update-and-revealing-pre-freeze-flashbacks/

RELATED STORIES

TNT’s Snowpiercer this Monday will answer a burning question amidst the Freeze, by catching viewers up on Melanie Cavill’s trek to the Breslauer Research Station — and revealing why it is she failed to “ping” the latest weather balloon to be released.

While recapping Melanie’s arduous adventure, the dystopian drama will also flash back to prior to the titular train’s departure, revealing the specific circumstances that led to both Wilford and Alex being left behind.

TVLine spoke with series star recent Performer of the Week Jennifer Connelly about the harrowing Melanie-centric hour ahead….

TVLINE | When last we saw Melanie, she had said a sad goodbye to Alex, hopped off the train with her sled and was ready to trek through the tundra. Most simply said, “How goes it?”
[Chuckles] It’s a mixed bag. As you might expect, there are some obstacles along the way, there are some unforeseen encounters and events and challenges. But she’s really put to the test, and I think that she rises to the occasion.

TVLINE | Will the show “rewind” a bit to reveal what happened as soon as she left the train?
Yes, you meet up with her and follow her on her journey from when she leaves the train and begins her epic snow crossing to the station. And then, it’s all about her voyage of discovery, trying to gather this information so that they can get off that train and find a place to start again on Earth.

Snowpiercer Big Alice

TVLINE | Talk about these epic treks through the snow. What does that actually look like for Jennifer Connelly, on set? What are you trudging through?
I was trudging through some synthetic material that was being blown by massive fans inside sound stages in Vancouver, [against a] green screen. Most of the show is practical locations, where we’re filming inside these train cars and in these beautifully designed sets. And once I was inside the research station, it was that way as well. But for the snowy journey, that was on a green screen — although they did pick up some footage without me, out on a glacier.

TVLINE | One of the first thoughts I had as soon as Melanie embarked on this trip was that I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s not alone when she gets there. That seems like the kind of thing the show would do….
Yes, maybe…. Maybe somebody, or something, is there.

TVLINE | Would you almost describe her ordeal at the weather station as like Matt Damon’s The Martian? Is she going to have to “science” some stuff?
She is going to science the heck out of the problem while she’s on her own in a hostile environment, so I can see why you make the comparison. It’s pretty cool, and I have a lot of admiration for that. My [23-year-old] son is an engineer, and I was thinking, “God, wouldn’t it be cool to be just a little bit like Kai?” And I got to pretend I was a bit like Kai in this episode.

Snowpiercer Wilford Melanie

TVLINE | The promo for this week suggests that we will get some flashbacks to pre-Freeze times. What sorts of things will we learn?
The Melanie  that we met at the beginning of Season 1 was a very different woman than we’re spending time with now, and we’ve been following this process of her being able to drop these facades and get back to who she really is, and get back to her original purpose. In this episode, we go much deeper than we have before and we explore what happened in the moments leading up to the train leaving, and how it happened that Alexandra was left behind. We get to understand a bit about the history between Wilford and Melanie,  and what exactly led to her decision to take the train from him.

Snowpiercer 2x03

TVLINE | We gave you and Rowan Blanchard Performer of the Week for that episode where Melanie and Alex truly reconnected. Were you happy that that happened sooner rather than later? Because when we first met Alex, I was like, “Oh, man, I hope they’re not at loggerheads for half of the season.” It was nice that they shared those moments just a few episodes in.
I really liked that, yes — and thank you, by the way, that was very nice. I thought it was good because I thought it was a believable balance. I would’ve been really frustrated if it was like, “Oh, we’re just going to forget all this history that we had and assume a relationship that isn’t real,” because that wouldn’t have felt genuine either. That was a huge number of years that have gone by without them actually knowing each other, so I feel like it needed to be earned a bit. But they both want that relationship so much, so I thought it was really moving when they do come together. It was really satisfying. You want that to happen, and I wanted that to happen so much.

Rick and Morty season 5: Series writer shares exciting update on future of series https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-season-5-series-writer-shares-exciting-update-on-future-of-series/ https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-season-5-series-writer-shares-exciting-update-on-future-of-series/#respond Wed, 24 Feb 2021 06:22:24 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rick-and-morty-season-5-series-writer-shares-exciting-update-on-future-of-series/

Fans have been waiting on new episodes of Rick and Morty since the irreverent animated comedy finished its fourth season last May. Though Adult Swim have yet to confirm release dates for season five, with episodes also expected to hit Hulu and Netflix, an update from writer Alex Rubens has suggested the return could happen much sooner than expected.

One of Rick and Morty’s main writers has just revealed work has already started on the popular sci-fi cartoon’s seventh season.

The new update came as a shock for many fans, who still haven’t seen a single episode of the animated comedy’s fifth instalment.

Rubens took to Twitter with the announcement, which was met with a fair share of disbelief from his followers.

He wrote: “Am I allowed to say we started writing Rick and Morty Season 7? (If not we didn’t and I’m not).”

READ MORE: Rick and Morty: Dan Harmon shares exciting update on season five

The seventh season would be the fourth of a projected seven-season renewal after Adult Swim ordered 70 more episodes over an unknown number of instalments in May 2018.

With each season consisting of ten episodes, other than Rick and Morty’s 11-episode debut, the popular adult animation could run until its tenth season.

On Reddit, one fan quipped: “Can’t wait to watch it when it comes out in 4 years.”

News of Rick and Morty’s production being at least two seasons ahead of schedule certainly comes as a surprise as the series has become infamous for taking lengthy breaks between new episodes.

Most major television and film productions were hit hard by coronavirus delays last year.

Thankfully, animation is one medium that can still run smoothly when the staff are confined to their homes, so Rick and Morty fans shouldn’t expect any further delays.

Still, production on the most recent instalments took almost two years, with a long break in between two blocks of five episodes in season four causing further frustration amongst fans.

Though Adult Swim have yet to confirm, Rubens and Harmon’s optimistic updates have suggested season five could premiere as early as this year.

Sharing another update at last year’s convention, Harmon added: “Immediately after this panel, I’ll be going and reviewing an animatic for a late season five episode.

“And yet, we are very late [in the process of] writing season six.

“I’m looking at finales for both seasons and then also refining the finale of one and then the premiere of the other. So I can’t remember the differences.”

Hopefully Rick and Morty’s team can polish the final pieces of season five over the coming months and yet another painful wait for new content can come to an end soon.

Rick and Morty seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
