"Avatar" was the biggest movie in the world over the weekend — again.
James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic was re-released to theaters ahead of the December debut of its long-awaited sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water." It grossed $ 30.5 million globally, $ 10 million of which came from North America.
The strong box office for the 13-year-old movie is a good sign for "The Way of Water's" chances.
"Avatar" is the biggest movie of all time, now with $ 2.878 billion at the worldwide box office, including $ 770.5 million domestically.
"Avengers: Endgame" briefly topped it in 2019, but "Avatar" reclaimed its crown after a re-release in China last year grossed $ 50 million.
"Avatar" was remastered for this re-release in 4K at a high-dynamic range and with enhanced sound. Imax screenings accounted for 20% of the global gross and 29% of the domestic take.
The lesson here is to never underestimate Cameron, who also directed "Titanic" — which was the world's biggest movie until "Avatar" dethroned it.
"'You know what? I made "Titanic." This building that we're meeting in right now, this new half-billion dollar complex on your lot? "Titanic" paid for that, so I get to do this,'" Cameron told the studio regarding changes it wanted to make to "Avatar," he said in a recent interview with The New York Times. "And afterward, they thanked me."
The theatrical industry has a lot riding on "The Way of Water." After a promising summer, blockbuster tentpoles have been lacking in recent weeks. The only surefire hits coming to theaters the rest of the year are "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "The Way of Water."
Because of the movie drought, studios have recently re-released other movies, such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Jaws." The former earned $ 6.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the US, and the latter made $ 3 million in that same period.
"Avatar" was up against the new release "Don't Worry Darling" over the weekend, which topped the US box office with $ 19 million after months of offscreen drama.

Once Europe's partial ban on Russian oil kicks in this December, the direction of those crude flows could change dramatically as Moscow seeks new buyers for its excess barrels.
In a Friday note by Kpler's Viktor Katona, the research firm highlighted seven different nations other than China and India that could see an uptick of Russian oil deliveries in 2023.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has acknowledged the potential for buying Russian oil, and Kpler sees the country as a top prospect for a surge in imports from Russia.
"Very much alike India, Jakarta is seeing discounted barrels as a way of mitigating inflation – after the government hiked fuel prices by 30% in early September (as the country's $ 34 billion subsidy system was getting untenable), inflation worries have come to the forefront again," according to the note.
The last time an Indonesian refiner purchased a Russian crude cargo was December 2016. In Kpler's view, Indonesia could see a potential influx of 100,000 to 150,000 Russian crude barrels per day.
Pakistan, too, has publicly weighed buying Russian crude, Kpler explained, as the government in Islamabad has reportedly asked the nation's refiners to consider buying discounted supplies from Russia as crude prices soar.
Still, there are some reservations.
"Given that Pakistan is effectively buying crude from two Middle Eastern producers – Saudi Arabia and the UAE – it remains to be seen whether domestic refiners would risk antagonizing their relationship," Kpler said.
Pakistan could see a jump of roughly 50,000 to 100,000 additional barrels per day from Russia.
Kpler anticipates that Brazil's October elections will rejuvenate its international ties to so-called BRICS nations, of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Brazil has ramped up its intake of domestic production throughout 2022 and flows to domestic markets are at their highest since 2019. At the same time, its exports have dipped slightly.
"Given that Urals is of very similar quality to Brazil's Tupi or Buzios (same density, higher Sulphur content), refining a discounted crude could free up a substantial portion of Brazilian production to maximize profits," Kpler's Katona wrote.
Brazil could have see an uptick of roughly 100,000 to 200,000 barrels per day from Russia moving forward, according to Kpler.
Historically, South Africa has only had one delivery of Russian crude, which came earlier this summer, according to Kpler. But its status as one of Russia's BRICS peers means it stands as a likely candidate for higher volumes.
What's more, the nation's Natref refinery, Kpler noted, is less likely to self-sanction from doing business with Moscow compared to BP- and Shell-owned Sapref.
There could be a potential impact of 50,000 to 100,000 barrels per day flowing from Russian ports to South Africa.
Since August, Kpler reports that Sri Lanka has already started buying one cargo per month of Russian crude, and the research firm expects this pace to continue moving forward.
As it deals with massive debt and political turmoil, Sri Lanka's oil imports are set to remain depressed, but that could open it up for a small increase in crude deliveries from Russia.
Kpler said the nation could see a marginal increase of about 20,000 to 30,000 Russian barrels per day.
It's unclear whether any Middle Eastern nations will step up as buyers of Russian crude, but Kpler noted that refineries in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in particular will be operating at full tilt once Europe's new sanctions begin.
"Given that these refineries will be effectively reducing exportable volumes, all this in a period of elevated crude prices, the temptation might be to feed Urals into the refineries and let the likes of Arab Light flow freely in Asia," Kpler wrote.
The potential impact for these Middle East countries are both the highest and lowest, with a range of zero to 500,000 barrels per day flowing from Russia.

Finding the comedy in any collective tragedy is a daunting task for entertainers. But bringing levity to an ongoing global pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 U.S. lives and kept Americans in quarantine for six months and counting?
Well, that was a Barnum and Bailey-level tightrope walk for the producers of NBC’s Connecting — but it was also a challenge they were eager to face.
“The way many of us deal with uncomfortable and painful situations is with humor,” executive producer Martin Gero (who’s coming off the recently concluded Blindspot) tells TVLine. “That duality of comedy and pain is inside us in a pretty ingrained way already. It was just about finding that balance and making sure the show never got too dark, but also never got too light.”
Connecting — premiering Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8/7c — follows a group of friends who, like many in 2020, have been forced to spend time together remotely as the coronavirus sends America into lockdown. The season opens on March 29, just a few days into those strict stay-at-home orders, and will eventually reach November’s election, with each episode jumping forward in time by a few weeks.
But even though the pandemic is still wreaking havoc around the world, Gero and executive producer Brendan Gall say they didn’t second-guess making a TV show that so closely reflects real life. (Other events that have unfolded during quarantine, including a wave of Black Lives Matter activism, are covered on the show, too.)
“We were definitely conscious that there was a version of this that would feel tone-deaf and wrong, and it was our goal to not do that version,” Gero explains. “But we also need stuff that speaks to the moment we’re in, and people want to feel seen and have those stories resonate. What we’re going through is a lot, and we could use some place to have catharsis. That’s what comedy does so well.”
Adds Gall, “We have these genres of storytelling — drama and comedy and crime and blah blah blah — and that’s not how any of us walk through the world. We don’t get to exist in just one single genre in our lives. That’s what we were embracing.”
Striking the proper tone on Connecting has been just one of many obstacles for the EPs, who are also navigating the unprecedented process of filming a TV show with little human contact. Each actor received a filmmaking kit, which included an iPhone 11 (on which most Connecting scenes are shot), sound equipment and lighting equipment; the crew remotely guides the actors through their own hair and makeup, production design and just about everything else needed to get the shot.
“It’s the closest thing to theater that I’ve done in television” Gero reveals. “It feels like such a communal experience of ‘We’re all in this together,’ and it’s been incredibly powerful to work on at a time when people are feeling so isolated.”
Outside of their partnership on Connecting, Gero and Gall have been friends for 20 years, and their standing Sunday-night Zoom dinners with other close pals during quarantine were the inspiration for the show. That sense of community — and commiseration, perhaps — are what the producers hope to convey, per Gall, in spite of the year’s harrowing events.
“It’s a common knee-jerk response when people say, ‘I don’t know if I want to watch a show about what we’re going through right now,’” Gall admits. “But the second response, that seems to come almost universally, is that once you start to talk about the show and see the show, people really get pulled into it… This show lets you in on this ongoing, evolving conversation about what we’re all going through, which we all need right now.”

In the fall, Law & Order: SVU will kick off its 21st season, making it the longest-running primetime live-action series in television history. That’s quite the accomplishment. It’s also a really good stopping point for a procedural long past its prime.
Yep, I’m saying it’s time for SVU to hang it up. Chung chung!
“Objection!,” you cry from the defense table? I understand. When SVU was in its creative heyday, the ripped-from-the-headlines drama was one of my favorites. Its central detectives, Olivia and Elliot, had an intriguing and complicated partnership. Its writing was fresh, with the franchise’s signature twists still able to catch us unaware. And it kept the victims at the forefront of each story, as Liv, El & Co. worked toward finding justice for those who’d been assaulted.

A lot of people like to cite Christopher Meloni’s Season 12 departure from the series as the beginning of its downfall, but I don’t: Watching Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia come to terms with, and move on from, Elliot’s abrupt exit proved that the actress was more than capable of leading the crime drama on her own. My disenchantment with SVU arrived later and can be summed up in one emblematic name: William Lewis.
For those who’ve forgotten, William Lewis was a Season 14 character, played by Pablo Schreiber, a psychopath perp who kidnapped, humiliated, beat up and (maybe) raped Olivia over the course of several episodes that amounted to no more than torture porn.
Olivia eventually recovered, but something fundamental had changed, and the show hasn’t stopped putting her and/or her family in peril any time it wants to amp up the emotional stakes. How many times, for instance, can her son Noah be in a nefarious character’s crosshairs before the audience just doesn’t care anymore? And on a related note, how often can someone from the District Attorney’s office do something incredibly shady, then have an out-of-nowhere, highly emotional goodbye with Liv? (The answer to that last one is two, apparently, as we saw with Barba’s Season 19 farewell and Stone’s quick out in the Season 20 finale.)
Hargitay is a powerhouse of an actress who deserves something more challenging than staring down the latest criminal/politician/lawyer who decides that Lt. Benson is more trouble than she’s worth. So I say, give the actress her due: Use this final season as an opportunity for Hargitay to play something meaty. Return to the types of cases that championed the victims. Hell, find a way to make it worth Meloni’s while to come back for an arc, if for no other reason than to show how far Liv has come since he left.
Letting the show continue long after the elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit has told all of its stories? That would be criminal.

Raymond Reddington will not pass “Go” or collect $ 200: He’s going directly to jail.
In the second half of The Blacklist‘s two-part Season 6 premiere, James Spader’s crafty character landed behind bars after expertly evading the authorities for three decades. Shortly after helping the FBI foil a bomb plot at the United Nations building, Red stopped by one of his favorite pretzel carts for a celebratory snack, only to be apprehended by a nearby cop who became suspicious of him.
As Red informed Liz at the end of the episode, it’s not the jail time that bothers him; it’s the gut feeling that someone in his inner circle must have betrayed him and alerted the cops to his whereabouts. While sitting in his cell, Red tasked Liz with finding out who the traitor was — but, unbeknownst to him, Liz was the traitor, and she’s the reason he now faces a life in prison. (Or the death penalty, if the prosecutors get their way.)
TVLine spoke with series creator Jon Bokenkamp about Liz’s decision to report Red to the authorities (a choice she made with half-sister Jennifer), as well as the proverbial “chess game” that awaits Liz and Red in the episodes ahead.
TVLINE | You had previously confirmed that at the start of Season 6, Red legitimately had no clue that Liz knew his big secret. But in the final moments of Episode 2, it seems like they’re both circling the truth without wanting to say it. Now that Red is in jail, has he become any more suspicious of what Liz knows?
I am the first person to say, “Well, we should wonder about how much he knows.” But I think it’s best to be completely straight with you: He doesn’t know. He is genuinely caught off guard by [getting arrested]. He was caught buying a pretzel. [Laughs] We thought it was fun that the most wanted man in America wasn’t caught doing some crazy heist; he was caught, like many of these people are, in a very benign situation. And yet, that stinks to him. He knows that it can’t be that simple. He knows that somebody has betrayed him. But he does not know that it’s Liz. That doesn’t mean he won’t figure that out, and if and when he does figure that out, there may be some fireworks.
TVLINE | At the end of the episode, Liz asks Red if he plans to kill whoever his traitor was, and he says, “I think it depends.” I know you can’t reveal what happens down the road, but in your opinion, would Red even be capable of hurting Liz if he found out she betrayed him?
That’s a good question. We’ve seen so often that Liz is his kryptonite. She can do to him what no one else can. But he’s never been incarcerated in this way. This is a betrayal like no other, and I don’t know how he would bounce back from that. I think that’s something Megan [Boone] did a beautiful job of playing at the end of this two-parter. She’s probably less worried about Red in prison, although that has significant consequences; I think she’s probably more concerned about what it means for him to find this person that betrayed him. That’s more important to Reddington, and Liz knows that, and she knows she’s playing with fire. But I don’t blame her one minute for the decision she made to sideline Reddington, who is always very slippery and has a way of finding the truth and circumventing the FBI. It’s a great move on her behalf so she can stay one, two, three steps ahead.
TVLINE | And now Liz is in this position where she needs to pretend she’s searching for a traitor in Red’s inner circle, even though she already knows who it is.
Right! And it’s not only that she’s searching for a traitor within his world. It’s also keeping up the story that she is his daughter. She now knows that he is not her father. Raymond Reddington was her father, and this man — who she’s now supposed to feel sorry for, because he’s been arrested and there’s legal jeopardy for him — she’s having to pretend that she cares deeply for him. And in some ways, maybe she still does. But that’s something that’s really fun to watch unfold this season, where you have this chess game happening between Liz and Red. It’s the stories of who they are, and the mysteries that they’re working in the shadows.
TVLINE | Will Liz need to cast suspicion on her fellow task force members? We saw her do that a little bit in this episode, where she half-accused Ressler of being the one to report Red.
She will, and it’s not only potentially casting doubt on others in the task force. It’s casting doubt on others in Red’s life — those who are closest to him. And now that he has a target on his back, we’ll have to see who stays with him, who’s loyal, who can weather the storm of someone like this going to prison. It creates a really unique dynamic. And keep in mind that, at the moment, the task force doesn’t know that Red’s not Red, and they don’t know that Liz turned him in. So Liz has this great secret that she’s not only keeping from Red, but she’s keeping it from the people she’s working with, and that is very different territory for us.
TVLINE | Liz is dealing with some serious inner conflict right now, because she’s torn between wanting Red in jail and knowing that he’s actually saved hundreds of people by working with the FBI. Will she continue to grapple with that in the weeks ahead?
Liz recognizes the situation that she’s created. And I don’t blame her; I blame Reddington. She has taken a step that will cause real fallout. But what other choice does she have? She can’t just confront him and say, “Hey, Fake Dad. Here’s what I found out.” [Laughs] She can’t really go to the police; every time she goes to the police, Red finds a way to slither around it. So I respect her choice to do that, but I also respect that she is fully aware that this creates a big schism between her and Reddington and the task force.
It’s really fertile ground for us for storytelling, because one of the things that’s difficult to do is to find “firsts.” Those are always the most fun in stories, and six seasons in, it’s difficult to find that. And yet, I think we have some of our best “firsts” yet in Season 6. We have Red being incarcerated with a potential pending trial; we have Liz in the driver’s seat, five steps ahead of Red; we have Red working desperately to find out who betrayed him, even though the audience is ahead of him and knows that it was Liz. We have a really unique Rubik’s cube of stories that we get to twist around this season.
With that, I hand it over to you. What did you think of Part 2 of The Blacklist‘s premiere? Grade it in our poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts!

A bunch of social media personalities have teased the Titan RTX, NVIDIA’s next flagship GPU, in what looks like a coordinated campaign. Google Brain co-founder Andrew Ng showed off the card on Twitter in an otherwise vanilla recruiting photo, “slow mo guy” Gavin Free teased a shot of it on Instagram with his cat, and Linus from Linus Tech Tips “accidentally” pulled the card out twice on his YouTube show.
It’s unlikely that these folks broke any kind of NDA, all simultaneously. That means NVIDIA wants us to know that the card is real and is trying to drum up excitement for a launch that’s likely happening soon.
We still don’t know the date, specs or price, but we can take a guess at all three. The Titan RTX will likely pack 72 RT cores and 12GB of GDDR6 memory, according to previous leaks, besting the RTX 2080 Ti’s 68 RT cores and 11GB of GDDR6 memory. That’s a pretty modest bump over the current top-end model, but gamers who want the best will no doubt pay.
And that price is likely to be steep — the last Titan XP model was released for $ 1,200, and the GTX 1080 Ti cost $ 700 last year. However, the RTX 2080 Ti already costs $ 1,200, so expect the Titan RTX to be north of that. As for the arrival date, the Titan XP launched about two months after the 1080 Ti, so by that standard, the Titan RTX is due (checks calendar) … imminently.

Earlier this evening, the Majority on the Senate Judiciary Committee announced that their “female assistant” hired to asked their questions at the Thursday hearing with Judge Kavanaugh and Professor Blasey Ford would be a Maricopa County, Arizona sex crimes prosecutor named Rachel Mitchell.
It turns out one of the only interviews Mitchell has ever done is with a publication put out by the far right ‘fundamental baptist’ organization Fundamental Baptist Fellowship International, an organization closely tied to Bob Jones University and espousing a range of hyper-traditionalist views on gender, sexuality and sexual ethics.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Automachef looks reminiscent of the assembly optimization of Factorio, a game that offered expansive alien worlds and resources for your manufacturing. Comparatively, Automachef‘s puzzles challenge you to build in tight spaces with different sized machinery, all wrapped in a narrative about a burgeoning robotic fast food tycoon who believes he is human. Placing conveyor belts, arms, splitters, gates, and many other tools lets you complete dozens of challenges, revolving around putting together specific meals, managing specials events, and space restrictions.
However, setting machines down isn’t your only level of control in the mechanical kitchen; computer items let you type assembly code and develop specific commands for your machines. Programming intsructions for arms or ingredient dispensers can be key to meeting those special event or unique dish parameters.
Automachef is expected to release in early 2019; for more details and footage, you can visit the game’s site and developer Hermes Interactive’s Twitter page.
Twitch has been accused numerous times of springing changes on users without much warning, and it’s now bent on rectifying that by being open about its processes. The livestreaming site has announced that it’s publishing a roadmap showing you just what changes are coming to stream discovery. You’ll now know what projects are in the pipeline, whether they’re in active development or still in the planning stages. It won’t surprise you to hear there are a few major changes on deck.
To begin with, Twitch will replace the Pulse social component on the homepage with more recommended streams based on your viewing habits (you can see a preview below). It’s simultaneously reworking channel pages to help you find videos and the buttons for following and subscribing. In the long term, Twitch is promising more game-specific filters to help streamers categorize their broadcasts based on what’s happening (such as the choice of character), improved recommendations for smaller channels, better search and tags to help describe streams.
Both the roadmap and the changes themselves have one clear goal: help small-time streamers. While many associate Twitch with big-time streamers who can pull in tens or hundreds of thousands of simultaneous viewers, there are many small-scale broadcasters who may see a huge impact on viewership with even modest changes to the experience. The outline helps them prepare for those changes and, ideally, become as popular as their idols.
