Twitter already hides superfluous replies to your tweets, now it’s toying with handing that power to the masses. Software engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who has a knack for discovering what social media apps are building, outed the user moderation feature in a tweet on Thursday. A Twitter senior product manager has since confirmed the function is in development. As shown in screenshots, the update effectively allows users to hide individual responses to their tweets via the menu icon at the top right of a reply. Meanwhile, those reading along can unlock the hidden posts by following the same steps.

Twitter’s Michelle Yasmeen Haq explained the platform’s approach in a thread: “We think the transparency of the hidden replies would allow the community to notice and call out situations where people use the feature to hide content they disagree with. We think this can balance the product experience between the original Tweeter and the audience.”

Had said Twitter will start testing the feature publicly “in the coming months.” It probably helps that it now has a dedicated app to do just that. The fact is not everyone agrees with Twitter’s claims that the health of conversations on its site are improving. And while it’s proactively cracking down on its most barefaced abusers, this upcoming test shows that it’s also relying on users to police their own discussions.

Facebook is still determined to limit data access in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. TechCrunch has learned that the social network is launching a certification tool requiring advertisers to pledge that they’ve obtained your permission before using your email address for ad targeting. The company has “always had terms in place” that required consent, Facebook spokesperson Elisabeth Diana said in confirming the report, but it’s aiming to make those terms “much more prominent.” It will also “educate advertisers” on how they can use that data.

The company added that the tool wasn’t in response to a specific incident. However, the firm does expect to reexamine its involvement with outside data measurement partners to ensure they handle info in a responsible way.

Whether or not this is a reaction to Cambridge Analytica, there’s no question that Facebook has been improving its privacy controls in the days since the data sharing scandal became public. In addition to slapping restrictions on third-party data providers, it recently introduced a simpler way to manage and delete data on your phone. Facebook wants you to know what you’re sharing and where that data is going.

The main question here is implementation: how will this permission tool work? Facebook declined to elaborate, so it’s difficult to say whether the tool will actively enforce the email requirements or just obtain promises. If it’s the latter, that could be a problem. Facebook’s terms didn’t prevent the misleading data collection and sharing in the Cambridge Analytica mess — a stern warning isn’t likely to deter unscrupulous advertisers bent on collecting your email info without asking.

Haemorrhoids, or piles, are swellings of inflamed blood vessels. They’re found in and around the rectum and anus, according to the NHS.

Symptoms are usually difficult to spot, and some people don’t even realise they have piles.

But, they can cause bleeding after passing a stool, or a mucus discharge after passing a stool.

Aloe vera gel could be used to treat the condition, it’s been revealed.

“Haemorrhoids are an extremely common problem,” said medical website Healthline.

“To make them more tolerable, you can use home remedies to treat them.”

The Cleveland Clinic added: “The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera may help soothe inflammation of haemorrhoids.

“Although research isn’t available for its use for haemorrhoids specifically, it has shown some benefit for other inflammatory skin conditions.”

Witch hazel may also tighten the skin and acts a natural anti-inflammatory.

The gel could even reduce pain, itching and bleeding until haemorrhoids disappear.

Submerging the buttocks and hips in warm water is one of the best home remedies for getting rid of piles, said the Cleveland Clinic.

“Generally, experts recommend people with painful haemorrhoids sit in warm water for 15 minutes, several times a day — especially after a bowel movement.”

Haemorrhoids aren’t usually painful, unless their blood supply is interrupted or slows down.

See your GP if you’re showing persistent or severe signs of piles.

The doctor can diagnose the condition by a quick and easy internal examination of your back passage, said the NHS.

While the condition usually clears up by itself, some simple treatments can be bought at a pharmacy without a prescription.

Comcast customers in Washington state should check their bills for unwanted charges, State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a consumer alert issued this week.

Ferguson filed a $ 100 million lawsuit against Comcast in August 2016, accusing the nation’s largest ISP of misleading customers in order to tack $ 5 onto their monthly bills for an unnecessary Service Protection Plan (SPP). (Comcast has since raised the fee to $ 6 a month.)

With that lawsuit still pending, Ferguson says his office has received new complaints.

Piles symptoms are often non-existent, and people don’t even know they have them.

But, the condition can lead to bleeding after passing a stool, an itchy anus, or a lump hanging down outside the anus.

It could also lead to a mucus discharge after passing a stool.

But, certain foods could help to prevent the condition.

Fruits and vegetables

The skins on fruit and vegetables contain insoluble fibre.

Brightly-coloured produce, including tomatoes, kale and leafy greens, all contain compounds called flavonoids.

Flavonoids help to protect against haemorrhoid bleeding.

“Fruits and vegetables provide valuable nutrients that help strengthen your immune system, and fluids that may help ease constipation,” said website LiveStrong.

“As fibre-rich foods, fruits and vegetables also add bulk to your stool and may reduce strain and pain during bowel movements.”

Whole grains

Whole grains contain more fibre than refined grain-based foods.

Long grain brown rice, popcorn, wild rice, wholegrain breads could all help to prevent piles.

“Swap white breads, pastas, and crackers for versions made with whole-grain flours, buckwheat, stone-ground cornmeal, or rye to boost the amount of insoluble fibre you’ll get,” said medical website WebMD.

Legumes

Legumes, which includes lentils, beans and split peas, are packed full of protein, micronutrients, and fibre, said LiveStrong.

“Increasing your fibre intake can increase stool softness and ease pressure on hemorrhoids during bowel movements,” it said.

Yogurt

Yogurts can contain beneficial bacteria, known as probiotics.

Probiotics promote digestive health and boosts the immune system.

The University of Maryland Medical Center said: “Probiotics, or ‘friendly’ bacteria, such as lactobacillus and bifidus, can help prevent and treat haemorrhoids.

“People who are extremely immunocompromised should speak to their physician before taking probiotics.”

Fluids

Drinking plenty of fluids – particularly water – could help to prevent unwanted haemorrhoids, said the NHS.

Caffeine and alcohol don’t count, though. You should avoid or cut back on both of them, it added.

Everyone should aim to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, the NHS said.

Bad breath could be a sign of diabetes, doctors have revealed.

High blood sugar levels increases the amount of glucose in saliva, which provides food for mouth bacteria. This bacteria can lead to bad breath, or halitosis.

The condition could also be caused in diabetes patients as the body tries to substitute glucose for burning fat, which produces molecules called ketones.

Ketones are linked with a nail polish-like taste in the mouth, and could cause bad breath.

“Halitosis, better known as ‘bad breath’, is sometimes associated with diabetes,” said Diabetes UK. 

“Ketones form as a waste product which cause an unusual smell on the breath, sometimes compared to pear drops.

“People with diabetes can lessen their risk of bad breath by avoiding sugary drinks and food, and maintaining good oral health and blood sugar levels.”

Having bad breath could also have knock-on effects in diabetes patients, including depression and loss of self-esteem.

The best way to manage bad breath was to keep blood sugar levels within their target range, according to nutrition website Healthline.

Make sure to brush teeth twice a day, drink plenty of water and use sugar-free mints or gum to stimulate saliva.

Saliva could also be stimulated by medication, which your doctor could prescribe.

Avoid cheese, cabbage and brussels sprouts to reduce the risk of bad breath, too.

More than four million people in the UK have diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, where the immune systems attacks cells in the pancreas.

If the pancreas doesn’t produce enough of the hormone insulin, or the body’s cells don’t react to it, it could lead to type 2 diabetes.

Eating healthily, regularly exercising and having regular blood tests were crucial to living with diabetes.

Google Chrome is going to war against low-quality ads and autoplaying content with sound next year. Now the team is adding a new target to its list: unwanted redirects.

Google today shared that 1 out of every 5 feedback reports from Chrome users on desktop mention encountering some type of unwanted content. As such, the company has announced a series of protections designed to fight deceptive behaviors intentionally designed to mislead web users.

The company is taking a comprehensive approach. Links to third-party websites disguised as play buttons or other site controls, transparent overlays on websites that capture all clicks and open new tabs or windows, or just redirects that happen out of the blue — Chrome will try to stop them all next year.

Here is Chrome’s current timeline for three new protections against redirects:

  • Early January 2018: Chrome’s pop-up blocker will prevent sites that send users to unintended destinations from opening new windows or tabs. Google is launching the Abusive Experience Report to help site owners check if any abusive experiences have been found on their site (issues left unaddressed for 30 days will trigger the prevention of new windows and tabs).
  • Late January 2018 (Chrome 64 release): All redirects originating from third-party iframes will show an infobar instead of redirecting. This will prevent redirects where a page takes you to a new one for no apparent reason.
  • Early March 2018 (Chrome 65 release): Links that open the desired destination in a new tab but redirect the main window to an unwanted page will no longer work. Chrome will detect this behavior, trigger an infobar, and prevent the main tab from being redirected so users can continue to their intended destination.

For the second protection, coming in Chrome 64, Google has found that many redirects are coming from third-party content embedded in the page. In these cases, site owners don’t intend for the redirect to happen at all. Here’s how this protection looks like in Chrome for Android (note the infobar that says “Redirect blocked”):

For the third protection, it’s clear Google is tackling something the developer is intending to do. Google admits these sites are effectively circumventing Chrome’s pop-up blocker by exploiting how redirects work. This feature will allow the user to continue directly to their intended destination, while also preserving the context of the page they came from.

In other words, Chrome 65 will stop nonsense like this:

It appears Google really wants to clean up the web next year. With over 1 billion Chrome users, the company is certainly in a position to make that happen.
