There’s been a crack in the case surrounding Unsolved Mysteries‘ return date: The remaining six episodes of the Netflix reboot’s first season will drop on Oct. 19.

In making the “Volume 2” announcement early Wednesday, the streamer teased that the new episodes will profile “more unexplained disappearances, tragic events, and bizarre occurrences.”

Within 24 hours of the show’s July 1 premiere, producers received nearly two dozen “credible tips” related to the cases in the first six episodes, EP Terry Dunn Meurer revealed to USA Today.

While the original series featured multiple cases in each hour-long episode, Unsolved Mysteries 2.0 focuses on just one impenetrable investigation. Another big change: The Netflix update does not have a narrator. (Robert Stack, who was the voice of the original show for most of its run, died in 2003.)

“The final decision was that it’s very difficult to fill Robert Stack’s shoes, and his trench coat,” Meurer previously told TVLine. “He’s just such an iconic voice. He’s such a signature of the show. We also wanted the actual participants in the stories, the family members and law enforcement [officers], to be more involved in telling the stories.”

The chill-inducing theme song, however, was resurrected for the reboot. “Everyone comments about the music!” Meurer declared. “That’s probably the most memorable element of the entire series.”

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

The stories in Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot are new. The sense of delicious dread you feel when you hear the unsettling intro music… is not.

That’s part of the reason why the reboot of the 1980s-’90s nonfiction series, which makes its debut Wednesday on the streaming service, feels so much of a piece with its predecessor. After all, executive producer/co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer tells TVLine, “the premise of the show has always been: Someone somewhere knows the truth, and perhaps you can help solve a mystery. And that has not changed with the new iteration on Netflix. That’s always been the mission.”

But that’s not to say that the new episodes are a carbon copy of the show that Meurer, along with co-creator John Cosgrove and executive producer Robert Wise, put in motion decades ago. (All are involved in the reboot, as is Stranger Things‘ Shawn Levy.)

“When we initially created the series, we were a little concerned that people weren’t going to want to watch stories that weren’t solved,” Meurer recalls. “But then when we started solving cases through the broadcast, we were very gratified by that, and realized that we could provide closure for the families and for law enforcement, and for the viewers, as well.”

Six new Unsolved Mysteries premiere Wednesday; another six will become available in the future. Here are a few bits of intel — in Meurer’s own words — you might want to put in your mental casefile before watching the new episodes.

PROVEN TRACK RECORD | “The original series profiled 1,300 cases over roughly 230 episodes,” the EP says. “Of those, 260 have been solved.”

FASTER FEEDBACK | “It’s much easier now. We have social media, so we can update very quickly on social media. Back in the day, other than local news coverage or network news coverage, you couldn’t get that news out as quickly as you can now. So we’re excited about launching in this new technology. It just gives us such an advantage over when we were producing the original shows.”

CASTING A GLOBAL NET | “One of the reasons we’re excited to be premiering on Netflix is because of the international reach. The original episodes did catch wanted fugitives in different countries in Africa, American Samoa. There were many, many cases that were solved, and that reach is so important,” she says. One episode, “House of Horrors,” details deaths and a disappearance that took place in France. “We’re hoping that if he is alive,” Meurer says of the suspected murderer, “that the reach of this show, the reach of the Netflix audience will track him down.”

A ‘CLEARING HOUSE’ FOR CLUES | “We have a team of people who are going through every single tip and vetting those tips,” she says. “It’s the more specific leads that come in, where somebody actually has a name and says “I have information” or “I witnessed something,” those are the tips that we get to law enforcement right away or to whomever we’re sending those tips to. We are a clearing house for those tips.”

NOT JUST TRUE CRIME | “We think of Unsolved Mysteries as a mystery show, not a true crime show, because we do have so many different categories,” Meurer says. “We have the UFOs and the ghosts and the treasure stories in addition to the wanteds and the missings and the murders. Unexplained death is one of our categories…Those are cases where there’s multiple theories. Was it suicide? Was it an accident? Was it murder? Was it foul play?”

A SPOOKY SAMPLING | The first round of episodes includes the more-than-a-decade-old unexplained death of a Maryland man named Rey Rivera, a disappearance in Mississippi that may be an 11-year-old hate crime and a UFO sighting in Massachusetts.

NO NARRATOR THIS TIME AROUND | Meurer calls the choice to film the episodes without a narrator — Robert Stack, who was the voice of the original show for most of its run, died in 2003 — “a really hard decision… The final decision was that it’s very difficult to fill Robert Stack’s shoes, and his trench coat. He’s just such an iconic voice. He’s such a signature of the show. We also wanted the actual participants in the stories, the family members and law enforcement [officers], to be more involved in telling the stories.”

THAT CHILL-INDUCING THEME SONG | “Everyone comments about the music!” Meurer says, laughing. “That’s probably the most memorable element of the entire series.”

Welcome to The Water Cooler, a weekly feature where the /Film staff is free to go off-topic and talk about everything except the movies and TV shows they normally write about. In this edition: Chris Evangelista sees John Carpenter in concert, Peter Sciretta attends a David Copperfield show, Jacob Hall plays Hidden Agenda, Hoai-Tran Bui watches Buzzfeed Unsolved, and Ethan Anderton tries to find time to do anything at all.

Chris Evangelista Saw John Carpenter Live

Over the weekend, I had a chance to see John Carpenter perform live. Yes, that John Carpenter – the filmmaker behind horror classics like Halloween, The Fog and In The Mouth of Madness. Not only was Carpenter a prolific filmmaker, he also composed the majority of the soundtracks for his films – usually eerie, simplistic, synth-based numbers that create great atmosphere.

In the last few years, Carpenter released two albums, Lost Themes, which were essentially music done in the style of his classic soundtracks. Think of them as soundtracks to films that never existed. Carpenter and the band he recorded the albums with started touring, and during the live shows, they’d also play music from Carpenter’s films. This lead to the release of Carpenter’s new album, Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998, which is comprised entirely of Carpenter movie themes. I saw the acclaimed filmmaker perform last year, and decided to see him yet again when he swung by my neck of the woods.

Here’s the basic setup: Carpenter and his band play their hearts out while a screen behind them projects clips from scenes of the films they’re playing the music from. If you’re a huge Carpenter fan, as I am, it’s a real treat. It immediately reminds you of how many fantastic films Carpenter has made while also making you want to go back and rewatch them all. Even the ones you don’t like! For instance, I’m not a fan of Carpenter’s Village of the Damned remake, yet the minute he started playing the music from the film as scenes of the glowing-eyed children caused a rampage up on the screen, I immediately felt like rewatching the film.

It wasn’t all a treat though. Look, I’ll be honest: I am what the kids call “an old.” I don’t go to many concerts anymore because I just hate standing up all night. If a concert has seating, I’m in. Otherwise, I skip it. The venue for last year’s show had seating, which was great. This year’s show, however, did not, and I was forced to stand all night, grumbling inwardly. Also not cool: other people. When Carpenter and company began playing the theme from They Live, the screen behind them started projecting the famous, incredibly long alley fight between stars Roddy Piper and Keith David. You may or may not be aware of this, but at one point, South Park recreated the alley fight scene for scene. The minute the screen at the Carpenter show began projecting the alley fight, this very loud, very drunk man next to me began shouting about South Park, apparently assuming he needed to remind everyone of the South Park parody. Listen, dude: shut up. No one wants to hear you.

Beyond that, it was a blast. If Carpenter comes to your town, and you’re a fan of his films and music, check it out.

Peter Sciretta Saw David Copperfield in Las Vegas

Peter Sciretta Saw David Copperfield in Las Vegas

Over the weekend, I took a short trip to Las Vegas with my girlfriend Kitra and several other couples. I lost $ 200 on blackjack (but had fun doing it), ate a lot of great food (Wicked Spoon is still my favorite buffet) and while the girls went to Backstreet Boys, the guys went to see David Copperfield‘s show at the MGM Grand.

As you know, I love magic. I absolutely idolized Copperfield as a kid and his magic television specials were one of my most anticipated annual events. I would record them on VHS and rewatch them over and over, so much that the tapes would wear out.

I’ve been lucky enough to see his show a bunch of times over the past 7 years, and it’s fascinating to see how much it has changed as he’s overhauled his old show with a ton of new material. It’s like seeing an artist at work, watching the new material evolve and improve over the past few years.

Copperfield’s show is truly unlike any other magic show out there. He has always been one of the few great magicians who used the power of storytelling to elevate his magic from a simple stage illusion to an emotionally driven experience. He is a big cinema nerd, evidenced by his early television specials which were filled with film homages. His new show features a half hour segment which seems clearly inspired by a mixture of Walt Disney and E.T., involving a time-traveling alien creature who must be returned to his family before it’s too late.

I know this may sound strange, but it’s so very enjoyable and unlike anything you’ve ever seen. In fact, there is so much magic packed into the segment, most of which might not even register to people as magic, but helps facilitate the illusion and the story, much in the same way amazing visual effects help in movies and aren’t noticed.

Copperfield performs two shows nightly, and three on Fridays, Saturdays, Sunday’s and holidays. This is a master of his craft with nothing to prove, someone who doesn’t need the money. He owns a set of islands in the Bahamas where I’m sure he could retire and spend the rest of his life, yet instead, he continues to work hard every single night, creatively challenging himself with new material. The show is inspiring, cinematic, emotional – a must see.

Jacob Hall Played Hidden Agenda

Until Dawn is one of the most entertaining video games I’ve played in years and I was one of those who didn’t play it as intended. Supermassive Games’ horror movie-inspired choose-your-own-adventure tale was designed as a single player experience, but I played with with friends and family, handing off the controller and making decisions as a group and shouting at the screen whenever something went wrong. It was a blast (our own Vanessa Bogart wrote about experiencing the game in this way).

Seeing that people loved the communal aspect of Until Dawn, the same developer decided to hone in on that for their follow-up, Hidden Agenda. It’s much cheaper, much shorter, and built to allow up to six players to participate at once using their phones instead of regular controllers. It’s a wonderful set-up and a big step forward for this genre of game. Getting my friends together to participate in a story and vote on outcomes and decisions and pushing the characters in the direction we want is my idea of a good time.

Unfortunately, Hidden Agenda is a bit of a dud. The story isn’t nearly as compelling as Until Dawn, the acting isn’t as good, and the decisions never feel as dramatic or monumental. The skeleton for something special is here, though. If the next game can take the tech advances and smaller footprint of Hidden Agenda and merge them with the pulpy and shocking storytelling of Until Dawn, it’ll be something truly special.

The Grisly Apartheid Assassination That Remains Unsolved https://briefnews.eu/the-grisly-apartheid-assassination-that-remains-unsolved/ https://briefnews.eu/the-grisly-apartheid-assassination-that-remains-unsolved/#respond Sun, 22 Oct 2017 10:11:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-grisly-apartheid-assassination-that-remains-unsolved/ Daniel Tshabalala knocked on his boss’ door and, receiving no answer and finding the door unlocked, let himself in. Once inside, he quickly came across Robert Smit’s body and found Jeanne-Cora Smit’s bloodied corpse slumped over the telephone in the lounge. Without taking in too many of the gory details, Tshabalala ran outside to alert a neighbor.

The Smit murders in November 1977 sent shock waves through apartheid-era South Africa because the hit was carried out against an up-and-coming National Party politician, apparently on the orders of someone at the top of the Afrikaner establishment. Even today there is no clarity about who ordered the hit, or the motive. “Up until that point, Afrikaner nationalism had been a united family,” says James Myburgh, the editor of Politicsweb, a South African news site. “But now you had a situation where members of the family were prepared to go so far as to brutally murder one of their own … and his wife.”

… the person who carried out the hit was not necessarily the same person who did the writing and stabbing.

The scene that greeted police on November 23 was straight from a horror film. Robert had suffered three gunshot wounds — two to the head and one to the chest — and a stiletto knife was plunged into his back. Jeanne-Cora had been killed by one of two gunshots, but her body had been further mutilated by 14 stab wounds. The words “RAU TEM” were sprayed in red paint across the kitchen walls, fridge and freezer. Only Robert’s briefcase was gone, and the neighbors didn’t hear or see anything. Although there’s little hard evidence either way, Myburgh says that if he “were to put money on it,” he’d say that “the person who carried out the hit was not necessarily the same person who did the writing and stabbing.” His guess? Someone came in afterward to make a cold-blooded assassination look like the work of a lunatic.

Robert Smit attended Oxford on a Rhodes scholarship, earned a Ph.D. in economics and was South Africa’s ambassador to the International Monetary Fund in Washington between 1971 and 1974. Upon his return to South Africa, he was appointed head of Santam International, a “front” whose role was to circumvent sanctions and thus acquire “international products of a strategic nature for South Africa,” writes Chris Karsten in Unsolved: No Answers to Heinous South African Crimes. When he was murdered, Smit was just days away from what promised to be a glittering political career: His seat as member of Parliament for Springs was virtually assured, and the talk was that he would soon be appointed finance minister.

“There was little doubt that the secrets in Robert Smit’s brown briefcase held the key to the mystery,” writes Karsten. One theory was that the briefcase contained a document destined for Prime Minister John Vorster himself, purportedly to do with the clouds gathering around the Department of Information. What it revealed is anyone’s guess, but the Smit murders were, in Myburgh’s opinion, “the unanswered question that ran through the information scandal” that ultimately resulted in Vorster’s resignation in 1978.

Over the years, a number of names have been associated with the case, and most of the rumors concur that, regardless of who actually carried out the hit, it was likely authorized by Hendrik van den Bergh, the commander of the notorious Bureau of State Security (BOSS), South Africa’s intelligence agency. “I have enough men to commit murder if I tell them to kill. I don’t care who the prey is,” van den Bergh once told a government commission.

In 2006, the National Prosecuting Authority of the post-apartheid government publicly named three suspects (two BOSS operatives and one a member of a police “task squad”). Phil Freeman and Dries Verwey were both long dead by then, but the third suspect, named only as “RA” but widely acknowledged as being Roy Allen, is believed to be alive and well, living in Australia. No charges have ever been brought against Allen, and he has even written a piece for Politicsweb, giving his theory about who the killers might have been.

The fact that the crime took place in the Smits’ home and involved the killing of both husband and wife has led many to believe that foreign assassins may have carried out the hit. It was hard to believe that BOSS hardmen could have been persuaded to kill Jeanne-Cora, and various former BOSS operatives have said that the crime scene did not bear the hallmarks of a BOSS hit.

One theory, which in Myburgh’s opinion has been underexplored, is what Joe Trento described in the February 1980 edition of Delaware’s Wilmington Sunday News Journal, thata “hit team of Cuban terrorists” trained and recruited by the CIA was being used to carry out the murders. Trento’s article was primarily concerned with the Cuban death squad’s links to assassinations carried out by General Pinochet’s notorious Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional in Chile (which often killed husbands and wives), but it did mention, almost in passing, that the squad’s victims included a “South African economist and his wife, who were shot to death in their South Africa home in November 1977.”

Although it’s hardly surprising the crime was not solved while the Nationalist government was in power, the case is one of very few from that era that remains completely unsolved. Even today there are many among the older generation of Afrikaners — not to mention the Smits’ children, who were 15 and 13 when their parents were killed — who would love to get to the bottom of it.

“I’ve always looked for a proof of hypothesis,” says Myburgh, who feels there is probably something in the files in Chile or Washington that could allow one to make a connection. “Maybe your readers in the U.S. will help us find it,” he says hopefully.

* Efforts to reach Allen and the Smits were unsuccessful.

Joey, 13, and Billy, 11, disappeared while heading to explore a small, nearby cave in Missouri, and Craig, 14, may have been with them. None of them returned home and they were all good friends, so it’s possible they were together. No one can confirm much of what actually happened, which has made the case very difficult to solve.

The murders of hip-hop legends Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. are still unsolved… but at least now Josh Duhamel is on the case.

The Las Vegas and All My Children veteran stars in USA Network’s new true-crime anthology Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., playing real-life LAPD detective Greg Kading, who’s tasked with solving the notorious killings. But in the new trailer below, Kading isn’t sure what he’s really supposed to be looking for, asking his superior:  “Is my objective to solve this case, or to cover the department’s ass?”
