Aussie flu spread may be peaking, Public Health England figures revealed last week. But, doctors have warned that the “incredibly unpredictable” virus could come back quickly, and that people should still take precautions against the flu. While the number of flu cases has started to level out, the number of patients coming down with the condition is still well above average, according to the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Washing your hands regularly and throwing away tissues quickly could help to prevent the virus from spreading, it said. “Whilst influenza rates have levelled out for now, this means that there are still huge numbers of patients being seen in general practice with flu and other common winter conditions – and GPs and our teams are certainly feeling the pressure,” said RCGP’s Chair, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard. “We continue to urge patients who are ill to think hard about whether they do need to see a GP – not just in terms of reducing pressures on the NHS, but to minimise the possibility of passing viruses, such as flu, to others.” RCGP’s Research and Surveillance Centre’s Medical Director, Professor Simon de Lusignan, added: “We’re certainly not out of the woods yet this flu season as the influenza virus is incredibly unpredictable. “It is quite possible that rates will rise again, although they may continue to level out or even decline.” If anyone comes down with the flu, the best thing to do is to drink lots of fluids, said Stokes-Lampard. Don’t mingle with other people – particularly the elderly, or at-risk patients – to prevent the virus from spreading further, it added. Painkillers can help to ease some symptoms, including muscle aches and fevers. To prevent infection in the first place, regularly wash your hands, she said. Aussie flu symptoms are similar to normal flu, but they can last longer, and tend to be more severe. Signs of infection include headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, runny noses, sore throats and sneezing. Aussie flu could also lead to pneumonia, experts have claimed. The flu has could help to lower your risk of infection, according to Public Health England.

AUSSIE flu symptoms include headaches, coughs and vomiting. The deadly virus infection could continue to spread, doctors have warned. Here’s everything you need to know about the Australian influenza virus.![]()
For one generation, Tim Curry’s performance as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the made-for-TV adaptation of Stephen King’s It will always be the first thing that comes to mind when they think about the character. But I’d venture to say with the popularity of director Andy Muschietti’s new film version of the classic horror novel, actor Bill Skarsgard‘s take on the shapeshifting entity is going to burrow its way into peoples’ minds and give Curry a run for his money in the long-term.
As It continues to dominate at the box office during its third week, Warner Bros. has released a new Pennywise featurette devoted to Skarsgard’s chilling performance. The video features interviews with the actor himself and the Losers’ Club kids talking about the first time they saw him in character, and you can check it out below.
When I first walked out of my screening of this movie, I found myself conflicted about Skarsgard’s vocal choices for Pennywise. But the more time passes, the more I appreciate the weird approach he took; aside from the costume, makeup, and his physicality interpreting the character, the voice is his secret weapon and a way to ensure he sounds different enough from Curry’s New England accent to make Pennywise his own.
For those of you who have been paying close attention to the making of this movie, you might be confused about the timing of when the kids first encountered Skarsgard in costume. The filmmakers have said that the first time they interacted with him was in the Neibolt Street house in the scene in which Pennywise attacks Eddie; in this video, Wyatt Oleff (who plays Stan Uris) says the first time they saw Skarsgard “all together” was during the projector scene. I guess either some of them filmed on the Neibolt set and saw him there first, or, more likely, all of the Losers’ Club kids filmed the projector scene and saw what he’d look like for the first time in those images as the hair comes back and Pennywise is revealed on screen. (Meaning they physically interacted with Pennywise first in the Neibolt house.) Moving on…
That unpredictability to Skarsgard’s performance that’s mentioned in this video is something the actor was keen to bring to the role. When I spoke with him at the film’s press junket, he explained:
If you have explosiveness and quick changes, it’s something that’s very unsettling. I wanted to incorporate that unpredictability, but have the character be almost like, you know when you’re about to pop a balloon [between your hands]? It’s this tension of explosiveness that’s about to happen.
But my personal favorite part of Skarsgard’s take on the creature known as It is the way he mocks his victims, which was an unscripted aspect he brought to the character. He told me:
…It’s like, ‘What defines evil? Real, real evil, and monstrosity?’ And having a crying child and then mocking that crying child is, to me, one of the most horrific things you can do. So I’m like, ‘Fucking great, let’s do that!’
It is in theaters right now. Make sure you catch up with everything we know about It: Chapter Two so far.

With the premiere just weeks away, the 39-year-old actress, who plays Michonne in the AMC hit series, has teased the first episode will be “unpredictable” and “deeply different”.
The American star has warned fans not to expect anything they have seen before but to prepare to be blown away when the show returns next month.
“It is a deeply different season premiere — deeply, deeply different and unpredictable and very, very rich in the story that’s being told and powerfully acted and all of that,” Danai told Entertainment Weekly.
She added: “If you thought, ‘Well, I’ve seen this, I’ve seen that, so I can be prepared for what’s coming next’ — no, you can’t. You won’t be prepared.”
And the American star confessed it’s not only the fans who will be bowled over by season eight as she admitted the cast have also been extremely surprised.
Danai continued: “It’s like nothing before. We’ve all been knocked clear off our feet, and there’s just so many ways everybody’s story is expanded and deepened and sharpened.
“It’s definitely a season that is going to knock everyone off their feet. That, I can guarantee you.”
With all out war expected between Alexandria’s leader Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviours, Danai admitted the clashes will come as a shock.
“The clashes that we’re in take turns no one’s going to expect. And at the same time, it remains palpably human,” she said.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 22 and will follow a day later on FOX UK.
Donald Trump’s positive impressions about his “tremendous” first meeting with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Hamburg is a good thing, but concrete steps are now needed to build mutual confidence and trust, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has said.
Gorbachev said the meeting in itself is a positive sign. “The very fact of their meeting says a lot. And even more, some constructive agreements have been reached,” Gorbachev told Russia’s Interfax news agency Saturday.
“The fact that the US President, for his part, gave positive account of the meeting is a good thing,” the last Soviet leader stated. “Trump is not an empty-headed man, he is an unpredictable one. And it is amazing that he speaks about the meeting this way.”
Now, Gorbachev underlined, it’s crucial for both Moscow and Washington to take “concrete steps” towards implementing the agreements reached at the Hamburg meeting. He also urged the leaders to build trust and to re-engage each other.
“[Former US President Ronald] Reagan and I have agreed at our first meeting that a nuclear war is unacceptable and it would see no victors,” he recalled his experience of dealing with the Republican hardliner. “This conclusion required revision of many domestic and foreign policy strategies.”
Gorbachev and Reagan first met in Geneva in 1985 to discuss the protracted arms race as the Soviet Union and the United States sought to drastically reduce its respective nuclear arsenal.
Eventually, the two leaders convened another summit in Reykjavík in 1986. Though the landmark talks stalled at the last minute, both sides managed a slight breakthrough which later resulted in the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed between the United States and the Soviet Union.
“If a good chance, [for if reconciliation] goes away, it may never come again; therefore it is time for action,” Gorbachev cautioned. “We need to build and restore trust,” he reiterated.
In the lead up to Hamburg meet, Gorbachev urged Moscow and Washington to restore the international arms control system that would include agreements on the offensive nuclear weapons, missile defense and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
In an interview with the RIA news agency ahead of the G20 summit, he called the restoration of the arms control system a “pressing issue.” He also welcomed the meeting between the two leaders but warned that “a lot of time has been already lost” and pointed that the two countries still “do not have a joint constructive agenda.”
He urged Putin and Trump to establish dialogue on a “whole range of issues and not just some particular aspects.”
Gorbachev believes the whole world is hopeful that Moscow and Washington will be able to build a constructive relationship as people are growing weary of international tensions.

Norway’s decision to prolong the stay of US marines on its territory is fueled by absurd anti-Russian hysteria, undermines European security and may complicate relations between Oslo and Moscow, the Russian Embassy in Norway has warned.
Russia views the extended presence of around 330 US marines in Norway as “an element of the US-led military preparations that have intensified against the background of the anti-Russian propagandist hysteria,” the embassy said in a statement on Facebook.
The decision by Oslo “contradicts Norwegian policy of not deploying foreign military bases in the country in times of peace, breaks the traditionally good-neighborly relations, and makes Norway not a fully predictable partner,” the statement read.
The explanation that US marines are deployed in Norway only on a rotational basis does not hold water, Russia’s Norwegian embassy said. The presence of American servicemen “escalates tensions” and may destabilize the security situation in Northern Europe, the embassy cautioned.
“Individual military servicemen will be rotated, while the presence itself will be permanent,” it said, pointing out that “this is how any permanent military base is operating.”
Due to the aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric and claims of “phantom” Russian threats by Norwegian officials and military commanders, “it is hardly possible to call such actions ‘exclusively defensive’ and not directed against Russia,” the embassy underlined.
In view of recent developments, Russia reserves the right to institute “adequate measures to guarantee the protection of our country.”

European security decisions should not be dictated by an “outsider” but must “be built only on the basis of safeguarding genuine national interests, mutual respect and cooperation,” the embassy added. “The sooner this fact is realized in Oslo and some other European capitals, the better.”
The Norwegian government announced Wednesday that around 330 US marines, who arrived in the country for a one-year stay this January, will remain in Norway until the end of 2018.
The Americans said they came to Norway to exercise with local troops and boost its own winter warfare and skiing skills. The Norwegian authorities claimed that the deployment of US marines, which became the first foreign troops to be stationed in the country since World War II, wasn’t directed against Moscow.
Earlier in June, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin expressed concern over the fact that, “American nuclear submarines are stationed in northern Norway.”
“The fly-in time of missiles to Moscow is 15 minutes,” he said during his televised Q&A session. Putin said the situation calls on Russia to establish an effective early warning system in the Arctic region.

The report, put out by Pew Charitable Trust, includes the results of surveys conducted in 2014 and 2015 to see how Americans were coping with what are referred to as financial shocks—those one-off expenses that crop up from time to time. Pew found that in large part, Americans’ ability to weather financial shocks is partially dependent on something that Americans still struggle to accumulate: savings.
According to the report, savings can trump income when people have to deal with unexpected expenses; having $ 2,000 in savings allowed those in the lowest income brackets to recover from these events as quickly as those who made more money, but had less in savings. For example, around three-quarters of families that earned less than $ 25,000 but had $ 2,000 to $ 4,000 in savings said that they had a hard time recovering after a financial shock. That’s around the same proportion of families who said they had a hard time recovering even though they earn more—between $ 25,000 to $ 84,999—but had less than $ 2,000 in savings.
While this illustrates the importance of saving up cash, that’s often easier said than done. This is in part because while people of all income levels can live paycheck-to-paycheck, those barely earning enough to cover necessities have a much harder time whittling down their expenses. And those who earn the least are also the least likely to suddenly inherit a sum of money or have family members or acquaintances who can help them out in a bind. That can make their ability to save dependent upon working more hours, or getting raises, or finding the time and money to advance their education—all difficult feats.
And the truth is that while savings helps in an emergency, it isn’t enough to ease financial stress. While cash on hand prevented many families from being completely destabilized by an emergency, about half of those who had to shell out their saved money reported feeling financially strapped in its aftermath.
The fallout from experiencing a sudden expense—especially among low-earners—has a cyclical effect: 70 percent of those who had a financial shock in 2014 also had one in 2015. Being a millennial, making less than $ 25,000 a year, or being black or Hispanic also made the likelihood of experiencing a financial shock and struggling afterward much more likely in both years.
Financial hardship can leave some families with few good choices. While just under two-thirds of those surveyed said that they would use their checking or savings accounts in an emergency, about 35 percent of people said that they would use their credit card. Of those who did rely on credit, less than a quarter said they were able to pay off the balance in a month or less, which pushed up their revolving debt. Not coincidentally, high debt levels in 2014 were an important predictor of whether or not a family would face financial hardship in the following year.
Breaking this cycle would be tricky. It would require not only better wages for many workers, but also different systems for savings and an understanding that even fiscal responsibility can’t ward off every financial threat.
]]>Harvard President Drew Faust explicitly criticized President Donald Trump in a media roundtable at Bloomberg News on Tuesday, The Harvard Crimson reported.
“This administration seems unpredictable in many ways,” Faust told journalists, according to The Crimson. “It doesn’t seem tied to the traditional notions of the role of government. And so [the new administration’s] understanding of this long relationship between federal government and higher education is unclear to us,” she continued.
Her comments are some of the harshest yet. In the past, Faust has tread more carefully in calling out Trump by name, instead voicing support for students while aiming to remain nonpartisan.
At the roundtable, she restated her concern for “safety and welfare of our students, our undocumented students, immigrants who are students and faculty and those who come to conferences and bring international perspectives that are key to learning and discovery,” The Crimson reported.
Much of that sentiment echoes earlier concerns Faust voiced to students in an email sent in January.
“Nearly half of the deans of Harvard’s schools are immigrants — from India, China, Northern Ireland, Jamaica, and Iran,” she wrote at the time. “Benefiting from the talents and energy, the knowledge and ideas of people from nations around the globe is not just a vital interest of the University; it long has been, and it fully remains, a vital interest of our nation.”
The email urged the Trump administration, Congress, and the court system to reconsider an executive order signed that bars citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen from entering the US for 90 days. That order is currently stalled in federal court.
But worry still exists across the US among undocumented immigrants as the Trump Administration has indicated it wants to ramp up mass deportations.
And Faust indicated that the harsh rhetoric concerning immigrants may dissuade future students from pursuing an education in the US.
“Who are we going to lose if enormously talented people don’t feel welcome here?” she asked.
