Enlarge / A patent image depicting how Clear would work. (credit: Ray Ozzie)
Ray Ozzie’s proposal to end the long-simmering crypto war between law enforcement and much of the tech world is getting a chilly reception from privacy advocates and security experts. They argue his plan is largely the same key-escrow program proposed 20 years ago and suffers from the same fatal shortcomings.
Dubbed “Clear,” Ozzie’s idea was first detailed Wednesday in an article published in Wired and described in general terms last month. The former chief technical officer and chief software architect of Microsoft and the creator of Lotus Notes, Ozzie portrays Clear as a potential breakthrough in bridging the widening gulf between those who say the US government has a legitimate need to bypass encryption in extreme cases, such as those involving terrorism and child abuse, and technologists and civil libertarians who warn such bypasses threaten the security of billions of people.
In a nutshell, here’s how Clear works:

This is the first year that Canberra’s picturesque Manuka Oval will host an international Test cricket match, giving sporting fans the perfect excuse to visit Australia’s federal capital.
Later in 2018, the Australian War Memorial will take centre stage as it hosts the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice, with a series of commemorative events taking place on November 11.
Visiting Canberra unlocks the Australian psyche.
Admire an extraordinary volume of treasures in the Australian National Gallery, National Library and Australian War Memorial.
Beyond these stately monuments and galleries, the 250-hectare National Arboretum is home to a whopping 94 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic Australian fauna, criss-crossed with walking and cycling trails.
The arboretum also features one of Australia’s quirkiest playgrounds, with huge acorns on stilts and play areas shaped like banksia pods.
Revitalised precincts such as NewActon and Braddon best illustrate Canberra’s new lease of life.
The Hotel Hotel in NewActon is the epitome of new Canberra style, with materials such as reclaimed wood evoking the Australian landscape.
NewActon is also home to A Baker, where the five-course ‘Just Feed Me’ and ‘Just Wine Me’ selections offer an array of local produce and wine.
Meanwhile, a blend of pop-up shops and cafes are sprinkled along Lonsdale Street in Braddon.
The Australian War Memorial was established as a place to pay homage to those who lost their lives in conflict.
This memorial is a humbling place to reflect upon life and loss.
Works from the world’s largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art (more than 7,500 pieces) are on display at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA).
Also home to Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series, the NGA’s depth of Australian works is the perfect historical storyboard of the turbulence and triumphs of this island continent.

When it comes to video game consoles, it’s only a matter of time before even the most locked-down system gets unlocked by hackers for homebrew coding (and, potentially, piracy). The goal for most console makers is to hold off that day for as long as possible, to maintain their total control over the console’s software ecosystem as long as they can.
For Nintendo and the nearly year-old Switch, that control seems in imminent danger of slipping away.
Hackers have been finding partial vulnerabilities in early versions of the Switch firmware throughout 2017. Their discoveries include a Webkit flaw that allowed for basic “user level” access to some portions of the underlying system and a service-level initialization flaw that gave hackers slightly more control over the Switch OS. But the potential for running arbitrary homebrew code on the Switch really started looking promising late last month, with a talk at the 34th Chaos Communication Congress (34C3) in Leipzig Germany. In that talk, hackers Plutoo, Derrek, and Naehrwert outlined an intricate method for gaining kernel-level access and nearly full control of the Switch hardware.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials are continuing to voice their displeasure with Apple’s approach to iPhone security, with one FBI official reportedly calling the company “jerks” and an “evil genius” this week.
Apple has repeatedly made it more difficult to access data on encrypted iPhones, making Apple customers safer from hackers but also preventing the FBI from breaking into phones used by suspected criminals.
“At what point is it just trying to one-up things and at what point is it to thwart law enforcement?” FBI forensic expert Stephen Flatley said yesterday while speaking at the International Conference on Cyber Security in Manhattan, according to a report by Motherboard. “Apple is pretty good at evil genius stuff.”

According to a press release from NextRadio app owner TagStation LLC, Samsung will be the next major phone manufacturer to enable the dormant FM chips in their devices. The FM chips will be switched on in Samsung’s “upcoming smartphone models,” which will allow users to listen to local radio stations.
Most smartphones ship with FM chips, but they are usually not enabled for various reasons. FM Radio isn’t just for music, it’s useful in an emergency situation, since it is more resilient and has a longer range than a cellular signal. FM stations can give people critical information even if a storm wipes out the local Internet infrastructure.
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai issued a public statement calling on the wireless industry to activate these dormant FM chips to assist in emergency situations. So far, along with Samsung, LG, Motorola, and Alcatel have announced they will start enabling FM chips in their devices.

Another fight between Apple and the FBI is brewing, this time over an iPhone reportedly used by Devin Patrick Kelly, the man who went on a shooting rampage on Sunday killing 26 people at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.
In a press conference on Tuesday, the FBI said that it hadn’t been able to access data on a phone used by the gunman. The Washington Post identified the phone as an iPhone.
“They’re in the process of looking at the phone,” Christopher Combs, the special agent leading the investigation into the shooting, told reporters on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to get into that phone.”
Combs’ comments suggest that critical clues to Kelley’s motivations or potential co-conspirators remain inaccessible on his device without knowing the password.
Apple told Business Insider that it reached out to the FBI after it saw the press conference on Tuesday.
“Our team immediately reached out to the FBI after learning from their press conference on Tuesday that investigators were trying to access a mobile phone. We offered assistance and said we would expedite our response to any legal process they send us,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement.
“We work with law enforcement every day. We offer training to thousands of agents so they understand our devices and how they can quickly request information from Apple,” it continued.
Flickr/Kārlis DambrānsThe Apple spokesperson went on to confirm that law enforcement had not yet asked for any help from Apple accessing data off of Kelley’s phone.
The implication is that had law enforcement contacted Apple sooner, it would have received tips and guidance that could have helped it preserve access to the data on Kelley’s phone.
For example, as a security measure, the fingerprint sensor on iPhones won’t work if the user hasn’t used it in the last 48 hours. That suggests that for the two days after the rampage and after Kelley’s death, but before the press conference, law enforcement could have used Kelley’s actual finger or a copy of his fingerprint to access his phone.
The episode mirrors a fraught situation in 2016 when Apple and the FBI publicly clashed over access to an iPhone used by Syed Farook, a terrorist associated with an attack in San Bernardino.
At the time, Apple went public to fight a court ruling that ordered it to assist the FBI in bypassing critical security features on the device. But the FBI later announced that it was able to access the data on its own and dropped the court fight.
FBI officials have called for companies like Apple to build “back doors” into their technology — special ways for law enforcement to read messages and other data off of commercial smartphones.
A spokesperson for the FBI did not immediately return a request for comment outside of business hours.

It’s still relatively uncommon to see female leaders in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries.
In biotech, it’s estimated that only about 7-9% of chief executive roles are filled by women. It’s not an issue that’s unique to drugmakers: Among the Fortune 500, 6.4% were led by female CEOs.
But among the generation of leaders under 40, there are a number of women who are building companies, unlocking new ways to treat cancer, and harnessing revolutionary gene-editing tools.
Business Insider initially came up with a list of 30 leaders, through nominations and past coverage, who are shaping the future of medicine. Of that list, half were women. We asked them what the contribution the under-40 generation would have on medicine.
Here’s who’s doing groundbreaking work as young female leaders under 40 in biopharma, listed alphabetically.

Narges Bani Asadi, the vice president and Life Cycle Leader of sequencing genomics at Roche Sequencing Informatics, grew up in Iran before moving to Stanford University for graduate school. While pursuing a master’s and later a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, she met a mentor who explained to her a future in which biology and medicine is more about data than a biology or chemistry lab problem. “It blew my mind,” she said.
From there, she started working at that intersection between computer science and medicine, launching a startup called Bina that was later acquired by Roche. The company worked to find clinical applications for genomic data, so that the findings that come out of academic researchers make it to patients.
“How can that actually change medicine? That’s the bottleneck today,” she said. “What is the clinical utility of this information?”
The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: It will be getting more nontraditional, and possibly even younger people into the industry that come from different backgrounds and expertise areas, Bani Asadi said.

Stephanie Barrett, a principal scientist at Merck, is working to make implantable devices to treat infectious diseases. Originally from Canada, Barrett moved to the US in 2004 to get her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shortly after completing her graduate work, she joined Merck.
Right now, treatments for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis are taken via pills. Merck’s hope is that by building an implanted device, people will do better on the medications because they will actually adhere to them. Adherence is key when you’re thinking about infectious diseases like HIV where you need low viral counts.
The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: The energy and “hungriness” this generation will have will propel things forward, Barrett said.

Viki Bockstal, the biomarker lead for filovirus vaccines at Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Vaccines, helps develop vaccines to prevent hard-to-treat conditions, including HIV, polio, and Ebola. She joined Janssen in 2012 after receiving her Ph.D. in bioengineering sciences at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Her job is to help Janssen’s Ebola vaccine keep moving through clinical trials, a process that can be difficult when there isn’t an Ebola outbreak. In the absence of that, Bockstal determines the parameters that help determine whether the vaccine is effective or not.
The contribution the under-40 generation will have on medicine: Bockstal said it will be by finding vaccines or cures for some of the infectious diseases and conditions that have so far evaded our grasp, such as Ebola, HIV and cancer. “I truly believe this generation has the best shot at not only making this happen, but also really eradicating diseases such as AIDS, measles, polio, tuberculosis, and malaria,” Bockstal said.

ALZHEIMER’S disease and Parkinson’s disease cures could both come from unlocking a key rogue protein in the brain, say scientists.![]()
Life hacks are all the rage these days. Unfortunately, most of the tricks found across the web aren’t actually very helpful. While using dental floss to cut a birthday cake might be a decent party trick in a pinch, it’s probably not something you’ll use very often.
Because of that, we’ve decided to put together a video series to test life hacks that people might actually use. Introducing Autoblog’s Car Hacks, where we test the most common car hacks on the web and let you know which hacks are studs and which are duds.
This week, we tackle the infamous hack that claims you can actually unlock a car door by using the air pressure from squeezing a slightly modified tennis ball against the key hole. Will it work? You’ll have to watch to find out!
Keep in mind, Car Hacks isn’t intended to be a replacement for industry best practices or professional maintenance techniques. If you’re into hardcore detailing, check out our Autoblog Details series.
