  • Hollywood star Uma Thurman said during an interview with The New York Times that disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein made unwanted advances towards her on two separate occasions.
  • Thurman said the incidents destroyed her relationship with Weinstein and director Quentin Tarantino, whom she accused of endangering her life after she told him about the Weinstein encounters.
  • She also said that she had been raped at the age of 16 by an actor 20 years older than her.

Movie star Uma Thurman finally opened up on Saturday about her own experiences with sexual assault following the downfall of disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein last year and the subsequent #MeToo movement.

Thurman, who worked with Weinstein’s studio Miramax on seven films, has now gone public with her harrowing account, telling the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd that the producer sexually attacked her and threatened to derail her career. She also accused director Quentin Tarantino, who frequently worked with Weinstein, of endangering her life.

  • President Donald Trump railed against former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and Michael Wolff, the author of an explosive new book about the inner workings of the White House.
  • Trump said Wolff did not know him at all, and that “Sloppy Steve” gave him access to the White House.
  • He also reiterated his past claim that there was “no collusion” with Russia and added that everything he did was “100% proper.”
  • Trump then accused former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton of colluding with the Russians.

President Donald Trump unloaded on the Russia investigation and Michael Wolff, the author of an explosive new tell-all book during a press conference with reporters at Camp David on Saturday.

In the book, former White House chief strategist and head of Breitbart News, Steve Bannon, is quoted eviscerating Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., his daughter Ivanka Trump, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

During the press conference, Trump called the book a “work of fiction” and said it was a “disgrace” that Wolff could “do something like this.”

“Libel laws are very weak in this country,” Trump said. “If they were stronger, hopefully, you would not have something like that happen.”

He added that Wolff did not know him at all and did not interview him, though he then said Wolff interviewed him once “a long time ago” for a magazine story.

“I guess ‘Sloppy Steve’ [Bannon] brought him into the White House a lot,” Trump said. “That’s why ‘Sloppy Steve’ is looking for a job.”

In a noteworthy exchange Friday during an interview with “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, Wolff said every single person around Trump, including senior aides and family members, questioned his intelligence and fitness for office.

Trump defended his intelligence in a series of Saturday morning tweets, saying his “two greatest assets” were his “mental stability and being, like, really smart.”

He added that he believed he was a “very stable genius.”

Asked during the press conference why he tweeted about his mental stability, Trump replied, “Only because I went to the best colleges, or college. I went to a — I had a situation where I was a very excellent student, came out and made billions and billions of dollars.”

He continued, saying that he then pursued a television career and was a “tremendous success, as you probably have heard. Ran for president one time and won.”

‘No collusion’ and ‘no crime’

Reporters also touched on a recent New York Times report that said Trump asked White House counsel Don McGahn to convince Attorney General not to recuse himself from the FBI’s Russia investigation last year. Sessions recused himself last March when it emerged that he had failed to disclose his contacts with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during his Senate confirmation hearing in January 2017.

Calling the Times story “way off,” Trump said, “Everything I’ve done is 100% proper. That’s what I do is I do things proper.”

“Collusion now is dead,” he added. “Because everybody found out after a year of study there has been absolutely no collusion.”

He went back to a frequent target, former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and accused her, as well as the Democratic National Committee, of colluding with Russia.

When a reporter asked Trump to specify how the Times’ story was “off,” Trump said, “You’ll find out. But the story was off.”

“If [special counsel] Robert Mueller asks you to come and speak with his committee personally, are you committed still to doing that?” another reporter asked.

Trump reiterated that there was “no collusion” and “no crime.” He also repeated another claim he’s frequently mentioned in the past, saying that “everybody tells me I’m not under investigation.”

Trump is a critical figure in several threads of Mueller’s investigation, and he is the central subject in the obstruction-of-justice case Mueller is said to be building.

The case is based on Trump’s decision to fire FBI director James Comey last May. The White House initially said Comey was fired because of the way he handled the bureau’s probe into Clinton’s use of a private email server.

But Trump later told NBC’s Lester Holt that “this Russia thing” was a key factor in his decision. He also reportedly told two Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting one day after terminating Comey that the FBI director’s firing had taken “great pressure” off of him.

Trump said Saturday that he and the White House have been “very open” in cooperating with Mueller’s team. “We could have done it two ways. We could have been very closed and it would have taken years. But you know, sort of, like, when you’ve done nothing wrong, let’s be open and get it over with, because honestly, it’s very, very bad for our country and it’s making us look foolish.”

He added that “this is a country that I don’t want looking foolish, and it’s not going to look foolish as long as I’m here. So we’ve been very open and we just want to get that over with.”

(Reuters) – Power grids maker ABB is buying General Electric’s Industrial Solutions business for $ 2.6 billion in a bet it can improve the division’s lacklustre margins over the next five years, the Swiss engineering company said on Monday.

Zurich-based ABB sees potential for annual cost benefits of $ 200 million with the deal, which includes an agreement for long-term use of GE’s brand and a strategic partnership. In 2016, the GE business had sales of $ 2.7 billion.

The GE products include circuit breakers, switchgear, components for lighting control and power supply equipment for facilities including data centres. ABB‘s portfolio includes similar products.

ABB is seeking to better penetrate the North American market and gain access to GE’s larger installed base of electrical installations worldwide.

ABB said the business had been “an unloved child” and pledged to upgrade aging products with its own technology to help arrest a declining U.S. market share.

ABB is suspending its $ 3 billion share buyback programme as part of the deal, which will bolster its position as the second-biggest supplier of electrical components behind France’s Schneider Electric.

ABB is also wagering on being able to cut costs and boost profitability at the Georgia-based GE unit.

“The key rationale of the integration is, first we will make this business better. And then afterwards, we will make this business bigger and better,” said ABB Chief Executive Ulrich Spiesshofer.

ABB expects integration costs of $ 400 million.

The GE unit’s operating earnings before interest, taxes and amortisation (EBITA) are just 6 percent of sales, less than half the 15 percent operating margin at ABB‘s comparable Electrification Products division.

Spiesshofer said he agreed to the transaction only after striking a supply partnership where ABBand GE will increase buying and selling from each another.

“Without that, the economics wouldn’t have worked,” he told reporters on a call. “With the supply partnership, the economics at the price of 0.9 times revenue is working.”

GE has been under pressure from activist investor Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management to sell assets and focus on higher-margin businesses.

Some analysts said the price was surprisingly high given the GE business’s low profitability.

“GE Industrial Solutions isn’t in top shape, so ABB has its work cut out for it,” said Zuercher Kantonalbank analyst Richard Frei.

ABB said it would finance the deal — likely its last for some time — with cash and did not need to raise equity capital. Its shares were little changed in early trading.

GE had resumed negotiations to sell the business to ABB after moderating its price expectations, people familiar with the matter told Reuters in August.

Credit Suisse and Dyal Co acted as financial advisers to ABB, and Davis Polk & Wardwell provided legal counsel. (Editing by Michael Shields; Editing by Keith Weir)

‘Don’t put that guy in front of the cameras again’: Fox News host unloads on Stephen Miller after altercation with CNN reporter https://briefnews.eu/dont-put-that-guy-in-front-of-the-cameras-again-fox-news-host-unloads-on-stephen-miller-after-altercation-with-cnn-reporter/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-put-that-guy-in-front-of-the-cameras-again-fox-news-host-unloads-on-stephen-miller-after-altercation-with-cnn-reporter/#respond Thu, 03 Aug 2017 01:29:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-put-that-guy-in-front-of-the-cameras-again-fox-news-host-unloads-on-stephen-miller-after-altercation-with-cnn-reporter/ eric bollingFox News

Fox News commentator Eric Bolling harshly criticized White House adviser Stephen Miller for his altercation with a CNN reporter at Wednesday’s press briefing.

“Listen, he’s a brilliant guy, he’s a great policy adviser,” Bolling said on “The Fox News Specialists.”

“He is not a communications person. Don’t put that guy in front of the cameras again.”

At the briefing, Acosta questioned whether the White House’s new immigration policy, unveiled earlier on Wednesday, was “trying to change what it means to be an immigrant” by favoring immigrants who spoke English and had higher levels of education and job skills. In his question, Acosta cited an inscription on the Statue of Liberty that reads “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

Miller fired back at Acosta, launching into a testy back-and-forth that lasted several minutes.

“I don’t want to get off into a whole thing about history here, but the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of liberty and lighting in the world, it’s a symbol of American liberty lighting the world,” Miller said. “The poem that you’re referring to was added later. It’s not actually part of the Statue of Liberty.”

Miller also aggressively challenged Acosta when the reporter asked if the White House policy would restrict immigration to those from English-speaking places such as Great Britain and Australia.

“Jim, I am shocked at your statement that you think that only people from Great Britain and Australia would know English,” Miller said. “It reveals your cosmopolitan bias to a shocking degree.”

For Bolling, Miller’s spat was a distraction from an immigration policy he praised as “really, really important for the country.”

“The message gets stepped on because everyone is going to play that interchange with Acosta instead of talking about how great this immigration policy is,” Bolling said.

“They really have to fix their communications department.”

It wasn’t Acosta’s first tussle with the White House. In January, during Donald Trump’s first press conference as president-elect, Trump cut off Acosta as the reporter attempted to ask a question about Russia, admonishing him as “fake news.”

It also wasn’t Miller’s only controversial outing in front of the cameras. The adviser alarmed constitutional experts in February when, during a defense of Trump’s travel ban, said, “Our opponents, the media and the whole world will soon see as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned.”

‘A toxic prescription’: America’s largest group of doctors unloads on the GOP ‘skinny bill’ https://briefnews.eu/a-toxic-prescription-americas-largest-group-of-doctors-unloads-on-the-gop-skinny-bill/ https://briefnews.eu/a-toxic-prescription-americas-largest-group-of-doctors-unloads-on-the-gop-skinny-bill/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 03:14:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-toxic-prescription-americas-largest-group-of-doctors-unloads-on-the-gop-skinny-bill/ Mitch McConnell health care voteReuters/Aaron P. Bernstein

The Senate released the text to its “skinny repeal” plan on Thursday, and the biggest group of doctors in the US wasn’t on board.

The American Medical Association came out strongly against the Health Care Freedom Act on Thursday, calling it a “toxic prescription.”

“Action is needed to address problems in the individual insurance market, but the so-called ‘skinny’ bill is a toxic prescription that would make matters worse,” AMA president Dr. David Barbe said in a statement. “Eliminating the individual mandate will lead to adverse selection, triggering higher premiums and further destabilizing the individual market.”

The Senate plans to vote on the Health Care Freedom Act around midnight ET.

The skinny bill includes a series of amendments that would aim to repeal certain unpopular parts of the Affordable Care Act, like the individual and employer mandate.

Without seeing the text, the Congressional Budget Office scored the “skinny” plan Wednesday night and found that it would leave about 16 million more Americans without health insurance.

Here’s the full AMA statement:

“Action is needed to address problems in the individual insurance market, but the so-called ‘skinny’ bill is a toxic prescription that would make matters worse. Eliminating the individual mandate will lead to adverse  selection, triggering higher premiums and further destabilizing the individual market. The stated goal was to advance policies to lower premiums, but the ‘skinny’ bill would do the exact opposite, harming patients across the country.

“Further, the bill would result in millions more Americans without health insurance coverage.

“Again, we urge Senators to oppose the ‘skinny’ bill and to pivot to a bipartisan effort, working through appropriate committees of jurisdiction and regular order to fix problems and gaps in current law to enable Americans to obtain quality, affordable health insurance.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump, under siege in Washington, defended his record at a raucous political rally in Iowa on Wednesday, rejecting a Russia investigation as a witch hunt and saying he was succeeding against all odds, despite no major legislative achievements.

“All we do is win, win, win,” he told a cheering crowd.

A feisty Trump spoke for more than an hour at a rally in Cedar Rapids that was similar to those he held during last year’s presidential campaign. It included protesters escorted out by police, Trumpattacking the news media and supporters waving signs saying “Drain the Swamp” in Washington.

Trump‘s first trip to Iowa since taking office on Jan. 20 came against a backdrop of problems in Washington. His legislative agenda is struggling to gain traction, a federal investigation of alleged Russian meddling into the election and possible collusion with Trump‘s campaign continues and his approval rating is below 40 percent in most polls.

But Trump touted jobs gains and an improving stock market as evidence that his economic policies are working. He vowed he would eventually get funding for a border wall with Mexico – possibly with solar panels attached – despite congressional refusal thus far.

“We’re thinking about building the wall as a solar wall,” he said. “Pretty good imagination, right? It’s my ideas.”

Solar panels along the wall are among proposals that have been submitted by companies to the Department of Homeland Security, according to media reports.

Buoyed by Republican victories in special congressional elections in Georgia and South Carolina on Tuesday, Trump blasted his opponents as “unbelievably nasty” and said cable news anchors appeared stunned by the Democratic losses.

Unable to get Democrats to join Republicans in major legislative efforts, Trump said the wounding by a gunman last week of Republican Representative Steve Scalise in Alexandria, Virginia, had fostered a spirit of unity. But he did not sound optimistic about breaking through the partisan divide any time soon.

Trump said he doubted he would have help from Democrats in getting major healthcare legislation through the U.S. Congress. He wants the Senate to join the House of Representatives in approving legislation soon to reform the signature domestic achievement of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.

“If we went and got the single greatest healthcare plan in the history of the world we would not get one Democrat vote because they’re obstructionists,” Trump said.

Looking to foreign policy, Trump complained about the “bad hand” he had been dealt, such as North Korea’s nuclear program, days after American student Otto Warmbier died after returning in a coma from captivity in North Korea.

On Tuesday, Trump had tweeted that he has basically given up on getting help from Chinese President Xi Jinping on North Korea after investing a lot of effort to coaxing Beijing to use its influence on Pyongyang.

“I do like President Xi,” said Trump, who was with the new U.S. ambassador to China, former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. “I do wish we would have a little more help on North Korea.”

Pandora lands a $480 million investment from Sirius XM, and unloads Ticketfly for $200 million https://briefnews.eu/pandora-lands-a-480-million-investment-from-sirius-xm-and-unloads-ticketfly-for-200-million/ https://briefnews.eu/pandora-lands-a-480-million-investment-from-sirius-xm-and-unloads-ticketfly-for-200-million/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 13:26:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pandora-lands-a-480-million-investment-from-sirius-xm-and-unloads-ticketfly-for-200-million/ Tim WestergrenGetty Images/Larry Busacca

Sirius XM will invest $ 480 million in internet-radio pioneer Pandora, the companies said in a joint statement Friday.

Pandora will also sell Ticketfly, the ticketing startup it bought for $ 450 million in 2015, to Eventbrite for $ 200 million.

Under the terms of the Sirius XM investment, a subsidiary of the satellite-radio powerhouse will buy issued series A convertible preferred stock of Pandora, representing 19 percent of the company’s current outstanding shares.

The deal comes after private equity firm KKR & Co LP agreed last month to invest $ 150 million in Pandora.

KKR’s agreement gave Pandora a 30-day-period to look for an alternative deal. This period was set to expire on Thursday, and so Sirius XM was racing late on Wednesday to beat that deadline and clinch its own investment in Pandora, sources told Reuters. But on Thursday, Pandora announced that it had extended the deadline “to explore interest expressed by a strategic investor in making a substantial minority investment in Pandora, in lieu of the KKR investment.”

We now know that investor was Sirius XM.

To sell or not to sell

Pandora has endured on-an-off M&A chatter for months, as it tries to re-invent its business with the launch of an on-demand competitor to Spotify and Apple Music. That product finished its rollout in April.

Liberty Media, which controls satellite-radio Sirius XM, has been seen as the only real buyer in town.

That means Pandora has had to endure stock swings whenever Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei talks publicly about the company — which is often. Maffei reportedly made an informal offer for Pandora at roughly $ 15 a share early last year. But in March, Maffei said that Pandora was “overvalued,” and that $ 10 per share was something that could work. Right now, it seems that Liberty/Sirius XM isn’t ready to take the plunge, at least for whatever price Pandora is looking for. The new investment also includes terms that prevent Sirius XM from picking up over 31.5% of Pandora without Pandora’s board signing off, according to Variety.

Still, any partnership between Sirius XM and Pandora would be a boon to both companies, given that they target a common audience. Pandora is seeking to become more popular with drivers, many of whom subscribe to Sirius XM, while Sirius XM is looking to expand its internet and mobile presence.

Pandora had been urged to explore a sale by Corvex Management LP, an activist hedge fund run by Keith Meister, a protégé of activist investor Carl Icahn. Corvex owned 8.6% of Pandora as of the end of March.

“Dems have been complaining for months & months about Dir. Comey. Now that he has been fired they PRETEND to be aggrieved. Phony hypocrites!,” Trump tweeted.

Trump was referencing some Democrats’ apparent resentment toward Comey after he publicly acknowledged that his agency was taking a renewed look at an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails during her time as Secretary of State. He had previously said the investigation was closed.

Comey’s statement came shortly before the 2016 presidential election, causing chaos for Clinton’s campaign.

But Comey’s firing came as a surprise to not only to him, but to lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Republican Sen. John McCain said that he was “disappointed” in Trump’s decision, while Democrat Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania said it was “Nixonian.”

Bill Maher unloads on cable newscasters for praising Trump’s strike on Syria https://briefnews.eu/bill-maher-unloads-on-cable-newscasters-for-praising-trumps-strike-on-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/bill-maher-unloads-on-cable-newscasters-for-praising-trumps-strike-on-syria/#respond Sat, 08 Apr 2017 19:18:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bill-maher-unloads-on-cable-newscasters-for-praising-trumps-strike-on-syria/ bill maherHBO

Liberal talk-show host Bill Maher laid into Democrats and cable news pundits for their praise of President Trump’s military strike on Syria’s Shayrat airfield in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed 80 people on Tuesday.

The Republicans’ positive response to the strike was expected, Maher said. “They got their two favorite things: [Neil Gorsuch] on the Supreme Court and Trump finally blowing some s— up.”

But Maher was angered by the reaction Trump’s strike elicited from cable news pundits and journalists. “Even the liberals were all over this last night,” he said Friday night. “Everybody loves this f—— thing. Cable news loves it when they show footage of destroyers firing cruise missiles at night. It’s America’s money shot.”

And cable news did love it. Trump was widely lauded by television media and political commentators in the aftermath of the military strike.

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria said Friday morning that Trump “became President of the United States” when he authorized the missile launch Thursday night.

David Ignatius, a columnist for the Washington Post, said on MSNBC Friday morning that, “In terms of the credibility of American power, I think most traditional Washington commentators would say he’s put more umph, more credibility back into it.”

MSNBC’s Brian Williams said he was “guided by the beauty of our weapons, and they are beautiful pictures of fearsome armaments making what is, for them, a brief flight over to this [Syrian] airfield…”

Multiple news networks replayed footage of the cruise missiles being launched while commentary continued in the background.

But some took on a more measured tone, urging people to refrain from cheering on military action that could result in injury and death.

Veteran journalist Dan Rather said in a Facebook post after the strike, “There is a tendency to rally around the flag, and a President who takes on a war footing can see a boost of support.”

He continued: “The number of members of the press who have lauded the actions last night as ‘presidential’ is concerning. War must never be considered a public relations operation. It is not a way for an Administration to gain a narrative. It is a step into a dangerous unknown and its full impact is impossible to predict, especially in the immediate wake of the first strike.”

Trump’s strike on the Shayrat airfield disabled the base for a few hours, before Syrian warplanes again started taking off from the field.
