A big new challenge has been added to Monster Hunter World today, for fans on PS4 and Xbox One.

A new beast has been unleashed on all platforms, providing another Elder Dragon to face off again in teams.

Lunastra, the Empress of Flame has come to reclaim her throne in Monster Hunter World and is likely to prove pretty vicious.

She was launched as part of a new Monster Hunter World update, which should be available to download on all platforms.

The latest MHW patch weighs in at around 550-570MB on both platforms, and also includes some new gameplay improvements.

However, the biggest addition to the game is definitely MHW’s Lunastra, a rare female Elder Dragon that litters the air with hot blue dust.

Here’s more from Capcom, who have been providing some tips to fans before the big MHW release.

“Thanks to the help from all the hunters of the Fifth Fleet, the ecosystems of the New World continue to thrive and flourish. Incidentally, this bloom of bioenergy also makes it a very welcoming spot for all manner of species,” the Capcom message reads.

“We’ve seen it happen with the arrival of Deviljho and the resurgence of Kulve Taroth, and now another Elder Dragon is on its way: Lunastra.

“The Empress of Flame returns with new tricks and unique abilities to challenge even the most seasoned hunters.

“Not only is she more aggressive than her male companion Teostra, but her capacity to alter the environment around her is unmatched. Stay awake and alert to her burning blue fire at all times if you want to survive.

“Teamwork is a powerful tool to conquer any foe in Monster Hunter, however hunters beware, Lunastra has learned this lesson as well.

“With the ability to fight alongside her mate Teostra and bond with him for devastating attacks, you’ll want to get a full hunting party stocked up on Lifepowders if you want to stand a chance against this power couple.”

This quest is built for multiplayer, so Monster Hunters will need to work together to complete the challenge.

As usual, players will be able to gather materials after defeating the new dragon boss, with an extra bonus included.

“The Smithy was able to master the technique for combining a Bazelgeuse Gem to unlock the “Guts” skill, adding a tactical defensive ability to Lunastra weapons.

“Materials from Nergigante and Xeno’jiiva have also shown the potential to resonate with Lunastra, so check with the Smithy when you’ve successfully completed your hunt against Lunastra.”

As mentioned above, today’s update also includes new gameplay changes, which have been listed in the official patch notes below:

  • You will now also discover investigations for tempered monsters when hunting a tempered monster or breaking its parts.
  • You can now change armor pigments and layered armor at all item boxes found within Astera (except the Training Area) or the Research Base.
  • It’s now easier to successfully pet the Poogie.
  • The camera will not be forcibly moved by Scoutfly guidance when arriving at camp at the start of a quest.
  • The trophy conditions for “Monster Ph.D.” were updated to no longer include monsters added in free title updates.

The Dambusters Raid of 1943: Bouncing bombs unleashed 330million tons of water https://briefnews.eu/the-dambusters-raid-of-1943-bouncing-bombs-unleashed-330million-tons-of-water/ https://briefnews.eu/the-dambusters-raid-of-1943-bouncing-bombs-unleashed-330million-tons-of-water/#respond Wed, 16 May 2018 08:07:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-dambusters-raid-of-1943-bouncing-bombs-unleashed-330million-tons-of-water/

LIKE so many schoolboys of my generation I was captivated when I watched The Dam Busters shortly after the film came out in 1955. There was so much to enjoy. Not least the charismatic Richard Todd playing Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the commanding officer of 617 Squadron, and the distinguished Michael Redgrave’s brilliant portrayal of Barnes Wallis, the aeronautical engineer who devised the “bouncing bomb”.

It was the end of the film that I found most moving, capturing as it did the poignant mix of emotions of those returning from the raid. While the crews had a sense of achievement, having inflicted a vital blow against the enemy, their joy was tempered by the realisation that so many airmen had perished during the attack.

I watched the film more than 60 years ago at a cinema in British Honduras (now Belize), where my family was living as a result of my father’s overseas posting. I remain as gripped today by the courage of the Dam Busters’ aircrew as I was when I first saw the movie aged just nine or 10.

Now, on the 75th anniversary of the famous raid to attack dams deep in Nazi Germany, I am delighted to pay tribute to those who risked – and in many cases gave – their lives to carry out one of the most daring assaults of the Second World War.

Even before war had broken out in 1939 the British Air Ministry had identified the industrialised Ruhr valley, including its dams, as a potential target of major strategic value.

However the mission to attack the dams grew out of a concept devised by Wallis, who worked as assistant chief designer at Vickers, the engineering firm. Initially his design was intended as an anti-shipping bomb but its potential value for dam destruction was soon identified.

An immense amount of research swiftly took place and by early 1943 Wallis had devised a drum-shaped bomb, similar to a depth charge but with a hydrostatic fuse, that could be spun backwards at 500 rpm. He calculated that if dropped at the correct low altitude and from the right release point the bomb would skip along the water and strike the dam wall before running down to its base where it would explode. In December 1942 and January 1943 testing was undertaken at Chesil Beach, Dorset.

Final tweaks were then made to the plans before it was decided that up to six dams should be targeted in May 1943 when water levels would be at their highest and breaches of the dams would cause the most knock-on mayhem. Soon afterwards the newly established 617 Squadron started training for a top-secret assignment codenamed Operation Chastise.

By the end of April 20 specially modified Lancasters had gathered at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson. During intense training, often at night, they practised flying at the required 60ft as stipulated by Wallis. As an added pressure they had to fly at exactly 232mph, with the bomb aimers trained in precisely how and when to release the bombs.

It was eventually decided to conduct the attack at night with the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams chosen as primary targets, while three others (Lister, Ennepe and Diemel) were identified as secondary targets for any surviving aircraft that were still armed with their ingenious weapons.

The bombs necessary for the secret raid were delivered to the squadron on May 13 after repeated tests and refinements.

Three formations were chosen, with the aircraft using two different routes to reach their targets. A total of 19 aircraft took off, each with a different call sign. Gibson, just 24-years-old but already a veteran of more than 170 sorties, was given the call sign G-George.

The first aircraft took off at 9.28pm on May 16 and the others soon followed with the intention of striking the dams shortly after midnight. For much of the time the bombers flew low – at around 100ft – to avoid radar detection.

Several aircraft did not make it to the target area, either being shot down en route, having to return home damaged or crashing into power lines due to flying at such dangerously low altitudes. Those that did make it faced other hazards quite apart from enemy fire: the Eder Dam, for example, was shrouded in heavy fog.

However, 617 Squadron pressed ahead with its attack and the raid was highly successful: both the Möhne and Eder dams were breached, while the Sorpe dam was damaged but not breached. The Ennepe dam was struck but not seriously damaged.

On the return journey two more Lancasters were lost to flak but 11 of the 19 bombers made it back to RAF Scampton, with the last aircraft – which had been badly damaged by enemy fire – landing at 6.06am on May 17. This meant that a total of eight aircraft had been lost.

Altogether 133 aircrew had taken part in the raid. Of these 53 were killed, a casualty rate of almost 40 per cent. A further three men were captured as prisoners of war.

The raid had left the Ruhr under an estimated 330 million tons of water. Roads, railways, bridges and an important military aerodrome were all washed away. It was initially believed that 1,294 men, women and children died from the floods.

Express Newspapers

The front page of the Daily Express after the raid

The Daily Express‘s front page headline after the attack read, Floods Roar Down page, May 1943 Ruhr Valley, and the success of the audacious raid provided a much-needed public relations boost for the war effort.

The government captured the mood of the nation by rushing through a number of gallantry awards for the aircrew. Decorations were announced in The London Gazette as early as May 28 and 34 of the survivors were decorated at Buckingham Palace on June 22.

Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), Britain and the Commonwealth’s highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy. There were also the awards of five Distinguished Service Orders (DSOs), 10 Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFCs) and four Bars, two Conspicuous Gallantry Medals (CGM), 11 Distinguished Flying Medals (DFMs) and one Bar.

After the raid 617 Squadron was kept together as a specialist unit and adopted a squadron motto of “Après moi, le Déluge” (“After me, the Flood”).

My personal interest in the Dam Busters raid has now lasted more than six decades. After making some money as an entrepreneur I have amassed several gallantry medal collections, including the largest VC collection in the world.

My collection of medals for gallantry in the air now includes not one, but two, medal groups awarded to Dam Busters’ crew: those of Charles Ernest Franklin and Leonard Joseph Sumpter.

Flight Sergeant (later Flying Officer) Franklin was awarded the DFM and Bar, the latter for his part in Operation Chastise, when as the bomb aimer for O-Orange he took part in the attack on the Ennepe Dam.

Flight Sergeant (later Flight Lieutenant) Sumpter was awarded the DFM and DFC, the former for his role in the raid. As part of the crew of L-Leather he took part in the attack on the Eder Dam. I am immensely proud to be the custodian of these medal groups.

Furthermore, I have always admired the bravery of men from Bomber Command and so I became a major donor to the Bomber Command Memorial that was unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen in Hyde Park in 2012 as a tribute to more than 55,000 airmen who died during the Second World War.

In 2015, I was touched when Squadron Leader Les Munro, then 95 and the last surviving Dam Busters pilot, offered to sell his medals to pay for the upkeep of this memorial. My solution to this issue, which Les went along with, was to offer £75,000 for the medals on the basis that the money would go to the RAF Benevolent Fund.

However I did not take possession of Squadron Leader Munro’s medals, logbooks and other memorabilia. Instead these were given to the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland. Squadron Leader Munro, a New Zealander, sadly died later in 2015, aged 96.

Today, as the RAF celebrates its centenary year, I hope that the nation will join me in saluting 133 participants from a unique raid that richly deserves its place in British folklore. The Dam Busters were the bravest of the brave and their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

Continuation Aston Martin DB4 GTs unleashed at Silverstone track day https://briefnews.eu/continuation-aston-martin-db4-gts-unleashed-at-silverstone-track-day/ https://briefnews.eu/continuation-aston-martin-db4-gts-unleashed-at-silverstone-track-day/#respond Thu, 03 May 2018 17:08:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/continuation-aston-martin-db4-gts-unleashed-at-silverstone-track-day/

The first customers for the Aston Martin DB4 GT continuation cars have now gotten to experience track time in them. Aston arranged a customer track day at Silverstone, with five continuation GTs stretching their legs on the legendary circuit.

The continuation cars are a 25-car run built by Newport Pagnell’s Aston Martin Works, after the original 1959 recipe. The manufacturer has dedicated a two-year international track driving program for the cars, and the next event after Silverstone will be the Rockingham circuit in the UK on June 21. The third track day will take place in Le Mans on July 27 — more tracks will be announced later.

The events have driving trainers to instruct DB4 GT owners about handling their cars the way they are supposed to, or as Aston’s press release puts it: “They will help customers master driving techniques from an era when track driving was more art than science.” Well put. One of the instructors is Aston Martin Racing driver Darren Turner, three-time Le Mans class winner.

If you can’t quite swing it to get yourself a real continuation Aston, there’s also a more modern opportunity waiting to be seized: a DB5 replica based on — of all things — a Honda S2000. As its dimensions are just a bit off, the car seems to be a cross between The Car and a David Brown Speedback, and it retains the S2000 interior. The asking price is an eye-watering $ 95,000, which is still a lot less than a continuation DB4 GT.

  • Experts say President Donald Trump’s recent cabinet moves reveal that he’s more confident, sick of conventional wisdom, and will now go with his gut.
  • Trump’s instincts seem to call for outright war or trade war with a number of countries.
  • With Trump’s cabinet now stocked with hawks, the US doesn’t lack for credibility when it comes to threats of military action.

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would replace his National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster, a noted hawk, with the even more hawkish former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton.

Just one week earlier, he replaced his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Yesterday’s repeal of net neutrality rules isn’t the only good news Comcast is getting these days. In January 2018, the conditions imposed by the US government on Comcast’s 2011 purchase of NBCUniversal will begin to expire.

Smaller cable companies that compete against Comcast are worried that Comcast will raise the price for carrying “must-have” programming such as regional sports networks, NBC’s local TV stations, and NBC’s national programming. The merger conditions require Comcast to submit to arbitration when there are disputes over prices, terms, and conditions of programming agreements with other pay-TV companies.

The FCC should impose new rules to essentially replace the arbitration conditions that expire in January, cable company RCN told the Federal Communications Commission in a filing this week. RCN is an “over-builder” that competes against Comcast by building its own infrastructure in areas already served by Comcast, such as Boston and Philadelphia.

After some oblique references via tweet, Microsoft has directly responded to our request for comment on our recent Xbox data analysis project. That response has led us to issue the following corrections and clarifications to our piece.

Microsoft has given us reason to believe the usage data provided by Xbox API consisted of incomplete estimates of total Xbox Live usage, and does not reflect a complete account of recent usage sessions by the sampled Gamertags. While the data provided seemed reliable in our spot tests, Microsoft tells us the API was “intended to display to each Xbox gamer an approximation of the time spent in a game so that they have the option to compare it with other gamers on the service.”

That fault in the underlying data has led us to vastly underestimate total usage times for the apps and games in our usage sample. Graphs and charts that refer to average minutes played or percentage of users who played a game during that 4.5 month period seem to be an order of magnitude lower than the actual per-app usage rates and times. The “My Games and Apps” section of the Xbox One was used by 71 percent of Xbox One players during our sample, according to Microsoft, not the approximately 6.3 percent shown by our data.

For three years now, Ars’ Steam Gauge project and the public sampling projects it has inspired (such as Steam Spy) have provided an important behind-the-scenes look at what kinds of games are popular on PC gaming’s most popular marketplace. Today, after years of work, we’re ready to unveil a new effort that similarly uncovers what’s popular among Xbox Live users on the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

As we introduce you to our data and our methodology, you probably won’t be surprised to see the enduring popularity of franchises like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and Halo on Microsoft’s platforms. You might be more surprised by just how often the average Xbox console is used as nothing more than a streaming video box, or by how a relative handful of games dominate the total play time spent on both consoles, or by the specific, branded Xbox 360 adver-game that still sees relatively significant play years after its release.

We’re just beginning to play with all the data about Xbox Live users we now have at our disposal. But first, a little about where that data comes from.

Bigelow Aerospace

Before the 2016 presidential election, businessman Robert Bigelow was one of the few people in the aerospace community to openly support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Now that Trump is in office, Bigelow says the new administration is moving forward with a realistic space exploration plan that focuses on the Moon, rather than Mars.

“Finally, we have someone practically engaged in the conversation here,” he said Friday, during an interview with Ars. “The prior administration excluded the Moon, but that was really unrealistic. With Mars, there are issues with cost, and more. The Moon offers by far the most practical target in the near term, and of course the Moon has a far superior business case at the current time than asteroids or Mars.”
