Mourinho is urging United’s hierarchy to trigger the £86m release clause in the France striker’s contract with Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window – instead of waiting until the summer.

He wanted Griezmann last summer before the player decided to stay in Spain but is ready to try again to revive United’s faltering campaign which has been compounded by injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho revealed on Friday that United are preparing “to spend big on one player this summer” but needs new blood now.

Barcelona also want Griezmann but Atletico do not want to sell to their La Liga rivals who are expected to make a renewed bid for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.

The problems are piling up for Mourinho with Ashley Young set to be banned for three games today after the wing-back was charged with violent conduct for elbowing Dusan Tadic in the goal-less draw with Southampton on Saturday. The incident was missed by referee Craig Pawson but caught on video.

If Young contests the charge, the FA will decide his fate before today’s game against Everton.

Mourinho was unhappy with the referee after the draw at Old Trafford.

He said: ”Craig Pawson is a fantastic referee, one of the most promising referees in Europe, and it was bad for him. It was one of the key points.

“The other key points were easy goals that we missed.

“Another key point was David De Gea’s save on the Shane Long shot.

“But the clear, clear point, especially with a result at 0-0, is a clear penalty that was not given.”

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford is the true England star… not Harry Kane https://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-marcus-rashford-is-the-true-england-star-not-harry-kane/ https://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-marcus-rashford-is-the-true-england-star-not-harry-kane/#respond Sun, 08 Oct 2017 09:03:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-marcus-rashford-is-the-true-england-star-not-harry-kane/

You would never have known from Marcus Rashford’s downbeat expression after that ponderous win last Thursday night that he had again shown how important he is going to be for England.

Understandable, perhaps. Because while all around him often looked bemused by the brick wall Slovenia built to defy him, the Manchester United striker was again the star of a distinctly dull show.

Okay, skipper Kane – Captain Marvel to his mates – predictably delivered the goods with his stoppage-time winner, and all credit to him. He’s pretty indispensable these days as well.

But even he would admit it will probably be young Rashford, just 20 in three weeks’ time, who will be the jewel in the crown if England get to wear one in Russia next summer.

He is, almost certainly, the best player this country has produced in decades. Better even than David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, and definitely as good as the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton, who watched proudly from his VIP seat at Wembley last week.

The rest of the world will get a better idea of just how good Rashford really is when he faces the much tougher opposition that Germany and Brazil, ranked No1 and two in the world, will provide next month.

They are billed as friendlies at Wembley, on November 10 and 14, but don’t kid yourselves. These two giants will have done their homework on him already and this truly will be the stage on which Rashford has the chance to show he is in their league.

It will also be an opportunity for the cautious Mr Southgate to play his prize asset up front with Kane in a 4-4-2 formation that most pundits predict would frighten the lives out of the big boys we are going to face in Russia.

Let’s face it, many of the top sides these days play against a lone striker every week; they have a pretty good idea how to handle most of them, most of the time.

Facing two of the calibre of Kane and Rashford, with the blistering pace and technique the wonder boy possesses, could finally provide a World Cup campaign to be proud of.

The mystery would be if the coach persists in playing him out wide.

Sighs of relief from our rivals would likely be audible all the way from Moscow.

Never mind that Jose Mourinho does the same at Manchester United for reasons only he knows. It would be a crying shame for Rashford, and England, if Southgate insists on following suit. It is an indication of Rashford’s growing stature that when the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season threatened to relegate him to a supporting act, he bounced back even better – in a central role of course. The boy still called “the kid” by everyone at Old Trafford recalled: “I knew how I’d react. It is more about what other people learnt about me.”

The hopes and dreams of those disgruntled England fans now rest on Southgate having learnt enough, and being bold enough, to let Rashford loose on the rest of the world alongside Kane.

This could start with some footballing fi reworks against Germany – appropriately in the same week as Guy Fawkes night.

Jose Mourinho suggests Victor Lindelof will be eased into Manchester United's first team https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-suggests-victor-lindelof-will-be-eased-into-manchester-uniteds-first-team/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-suggests-victor-lindelof-will-be-eased-into-manchester-uniteds-first-team/#respond Mon, 31 Jul 2017 07:51:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-suggests-victor-lindelof-will-be-eased-into-manchester-uniteds-first-team/

Lindelof became Manchester United’s first signing of the summer when he completed his £30million move from Benfica and has featured heavily in their tour of the United States.

The Sweden international has played in all five of their pre-season friendlies, in which they lost only once to Barcelona.

Mourinho is happy with Lindelof’s contribution so far but admits he is not expecting too much from the 23-year-old too soon.

“Step by step,” Mourinho said when asked about the young centre-back.

“Benfica is a giant club, I always think that players coming from Benfica come mentally ready because it is a big club and the responsibility to play for them makes players ready.

“But the Portuguese league is different and has different qualities.

“Benfica is one of the dominant teams, so he’s more used to playing with the ball than without the ball, so he needs his time and we are going to give him his time to develop.

“Such a young player needs time.

“Manchester United is a huge club with huge responsibility; the Premier League is the same.

“So let’s give him time, but we’re happy with what he is doing, step by step.”

The Red Devils face Sampdoria in their final pre-season friendly on Wednesday before next week’s Super Cup clash with Real Madrid.

Manchester United have been given some fresh hope of landing Real Madrid ace Gareth Bale.

The Red Devils have been long-time admirers of the Welshman and could make a move for his signature after Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane couldn’t guarantee he will stay at the Bernabeu this summer.

“I want everyone who is here now to stay, but anything can happen right up until August 31,” Zidane said.

While Chelsea could make a move for Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Everton ace Ross Barkley to bolster their ‘home-grown’ quota, according to The Sun.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has confirmed Barkley will leave the club after rejecting a new deal while Arsenal man Oxlade-Chamberlain has also rejected a new deal at the Emirates with one year left on his current contract.

Jose Mourinho claims Celta Vigo tie is the biggest match in Manchester United's history https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-claims-celta-vigo-tie-is-the-biggest-match-in-manchester-uniteds-history/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-claims-celta-vigo-tie-is-the-biggest-match-in-manchester-uniteds-history/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 12:08:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-claims-celta-vigo-tie-is-the-biggest-match-in-manchester-uniteds-history/

Manchester United may have been champions of the world twice, champions of Europe three times, lifted 20 League titles and countless domestic cups but none of that matters to Jose Mourinho at this moment.

It is some leap from his stance back in September when he admitted it was a competition United did not want to be in.

But the way the season has panned out, he knows how vital it is for the future of the club not only to see off Celta Vigo – United lead 1-0 – and progress to the final in Stockholm on May 24 but to lift the trophy because it offers back door qualification to the Champions League.

Failing to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition once under David Moyes was a shock, a failure under Louis Van Gaal in his second season was a disaster, but a third under Mourinho would be unthinkable.

“In terms of motivation, we are even,” he said. “For Celta, in their words, it’s the most important match of their history and my feeling is that it’s also the most important match of our history.

Jose Mourinho labelled Man United’s game against Celta Vigo their biggest game in the club’s history

“It doesn’t matter what happened before, what matters most is the next one. I don’t believe Celta want it more than us.”

Mourinho has never failed to qualify for the Champions League with any of his previous top flight clubs over a full season and does not want that record blemished in his first year in the job he has always coveted.

Failure would not just be a financial blow – United would be hit to the tune of £20m in penalty clauses over the course of their contract with kit sposnors Adidas and millions more in broadcasting and prize money.

Just as important is the damage to the club’s pride and prestige, not to mention their ability to attract transfer targets like Antoine Griezmann.

“I am not thinking about myself,” said Mourinho, with a straight face. “I am thinking about the club and I am thinking about the players. For the club it will be very important to be again in a European final. It would be very important to fight for the only trophy the club has never won before.

“For the prestige and the finance, the Champions League is the Champions League. For myself and the players, the Champions League is the Champions League.

“If you are not there, it is because you are not good enough. If we do not go to the final, if we play in the Europa League next season, it is because we are not good enough. So maybe it is the step we need to take.

“If we win, then it means we are strong enough to go to the final. The Champions League is the competition we want to be in. I want to focus on where we are. Nobody has more motivation than I have to try to win tomorrow.

“We have a little group with European success – Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick [Champions League winner sin 2008] are the English boys who have been a long time in the club plus also there is Juan Mata [Champions League and Europa League winner at Chelsea].

“But no-one else did it before so it will be very important for the club and the players. We will fight hard. It’s been a long journey, it is match number 14 in the Europa League, and we are going to fight hard.”

Mourinho insists it has not been a gamble to sacrifice United’s top four hopes to pile all his Champions League qualification chips on winning the Europa League – he rested eight players who will play tonight in the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.

Manchester United have lifted the Champions League three timesGETTY

“The situation is simple,” he said. “We have [a poissible] 16 matches in April and May with only 16 players and it is impossible. It was not a gamble, it was just a consequence of our situation. It was a simple decision, based on common sense.

“It was an impossible job since the moment we lost players – Smalling and Jones in the international break and Rojo and Zlatan against Anderlecht – and then also lost good alternatives, Shaw, Young and Fosu-Mensah.”

Mourinho will field the same team that secured a first leg win that will give United the upper hand tonight but he insists complacency will not be a problem against a Celta team who did not impress in their own stadium last week.

Paul Pogba will be one of the players who will return and after news of a FIFA probe into his £89m transfer, Mourinho says the revelation of his huge salary and the exhorbitant fees paid to his agent Mino Raialo will not have a negative impact on the world’s most expensive player.

He waved aside attempts by United’s press officer to dismiss the question, by saying: “The question is simple. He [the reporter] asks the facts. And the answer is no.”

There is bound to be extra scrutiny on Pogba however and it would be with perfect timing if he finally steps up to the plate in a big game.

Manchester United's Zlatan Ibrahimovic to retire from football – report https://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-retire-from-football-report/ https://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-retire-from-football-report/#respond Sat, 22 Apr 2017 12:33:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manchester-uniteds-zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-retire-from-football-report/

But the Daily Star claim the Swede may now retire from the game altogether.

They claim a source close to Jose Mourinho has confirmed the player’s career is over.

is out of contract at the end of the season and United are unlikely to trigger a one-year extension on his £250,000-a-week wages if he is absent for at least six months of next term.

The striker has been United’s go-to goalscorer this season with 17 goals scored in the Premier League.

He arrived from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer after winning four Ligue 1 titles in a row with the club.

Ibrahimovic retired from international football after Sweden were knocked out of Euro 2016.

He has won titles in Spain, Italy, Holland and France and was tipped to head to China or the MLS this summer if United didn’t offer him a new contract.

After Thursday’s match Mourinho was asked if he knew the extent of Ibrahimovic’s injury.

“I can’t do that because I am a manager not a doctor,” he said.

“But the news is fairly negative I think.”

Jose Mourinho blasts Manchester United's strikers for Anderlecht draw https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-blasts-manchester-uniteds-strikers-for-anderlecht-draw/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-blasts-manchester-uniteds-strikers-for-anderlecht-draw/#respond Fri, 14 Apr 2017 00:38:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-blasts-manchester-uniteds-strikers-for-anderlecht-draw/

The Manchester United boss was left fuming at his side’s failure to add to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 37th minute strike before the Belgian’s forced an 86th minute equaliser through Leander Dendoncker’s bullet header.

Mourinho insisted his side still remain favourites going into next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

But he made it clear he blamed his misfiring forwards for the disappointing first leg draw.

He said: “I think sloppy is maybe the right word. I can’t find a better one.

“We have to play more seriously. We put altogether the performance of our three or four of our attacking players and you squeeze not much juice out of it.

“Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Antony Martial.  They were very similar.

“And the people behind, very solid, very focused. And if I was one of my defenders I would be very disappointed. They did the serious work and the people who should kill the game didn’t.

He added: “When you don’t get the second goal, you run a risk.

“We had lots of space to play, lots of space to kill, lots of chances, lots of half chances that didn’t become chances because of a bad decision, bad control, a sloppy flick. Very bad decisions in the bad third.

“We were good defensively, very organised, very compact, but then they had one chance and we were punished.

“It’s a valuable goal and a valuable result but we had the conditions to kill there game tonight.”

Michael Carrick agreed with his manager after United were held to their 14th draw of the season here last night.

He said: “It’s frustrating. We were so in control but got sloppy, we have to kill teams off. We should have won that game.

“They had one chance and scored a header. We need to be more ruthless, it’s as simple as that. We were too comfortable. We got sloppy.

“It’s not the end of the world but we are better than that. It’s that little edge that makes the difference in the end, but we’ll look forward to the next game.”

United have been held to several draws this season after conceding late goals – Rostov and now Anderlecht in the europa League plus Arsenal, Everton and Stoke in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho makes shock claim about Manchester United's Champions League hopes https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-makes-shock-claim-about-manchester-uniteds-champions-league-hopes/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-makes-shock-claim-about-manchester-uniteds-champions-league-hopes/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2017 02:20:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-makes-shock-claim-about-manchester-uniteds-champions-league-hopes/

Jose Mourinho says he is considering playing stronger teams in the Europa League than the Premier League because Europe’s second tier competition offers a back door route into next season’s Champions League and could be easier to win than finishing in the top four.

Manchester United have been unable to break into the top four again since September despite an unbeaten League run of 17 matches.

Seven home draws – and 10 in all – have kept United rooted in sixth position since early November.

And with a congested fixture list in April and May complicating matters, Mourinho says he may have to concentrate on winning the Europa League.

United will take on Everton, who are seventh, and champions-elect Chelsea in April, face top four rivals Arsenal and Tottenham away in May and still have to re-arrange away games against Manchester City and Southampton.

And they will need to re-arrange another League game if they beat Chelsea in the FA Cup sixth round on Monday to reach the semi-finals.

Mourinho, who gave up on catching former club Chelsea in the title race weeks ago, says he will talk to the Glazer family, United’s American owners, and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward over the dilemma.

As United flew to Rostov yesterday for the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie Thursday night, he said: “Finishing second position is very difficult but it’s still very possible. First is impossible. Second is possible and we have to fight for it.

“The Europa League is very difficult but it’s a target for us and if we beat Rostov and we find ourselves in the quarter-final, then we have to think really seriously about the Europa League because in this moment we are still in the last 16.

“The last 16 we are still far away (from winning the competition) but when a team gets to the quarter-final draw, you smell the final.

“Then in a certain period of the season I have to analyse my team, the players, the conditions of everyone and if I have to make choices, I have to make choices, but choices that I would always share with my owners, with my board.

“But it’s not for now, for now it’s just play against Rostov, play against Chelsea, play against Rostov again and then let’s see how we are in all the competitions, and try to make the right decisions.”

Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw have been left out of United’s 20-man squad, Henrikh Mkhitaryan does feature in the group but Eric Bailly is suspended after his dismissal in the last round against St Etienne. United will also have to contend with a poor playing surface in the 16,000-capacity Olimp-2 Stadium following the harsh Russian winter.

Rostov manger Ivan Daniliants said: “The pitch is the same for everyone but it will still be a problem. In the final of the League Cup, United played on an ideal lawn – it was like a carpet. When they arrive here, they will be surprised.”

Meanwhile, Mourinho would ideally prefer Marcus Rashford to rest this summer rather than play for England Under 21s in the European Championships.

He said: “I know that if the team goes until the end in different competitions every one of my players should finish the last game and disappear to some place where he could rest for a month and not think about football. Don’t move one leg, just move the arm to get the glass! Disconnect totally.

“He is a young guy. Maybe every experience – if he is not exhausted – can help him to be a better player. Let’s wait and analyse the situation when that comes.”

Jose Mourinho: Luke Shaw has the potential to become Man United's greatest left-back https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-luke-shaw-has-the-potential-to-become-man-uniteds-greatest-left-back/ https://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-luke-shaw-has-the-potential-to-become-man-uniteds-greatest-left-back/#respond Sat, 04 Mar 2017 00:51:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jose-mourinho-luke-shaw-has-the-potential-to-become-man-uniteds-greatest-left-back/

Shaw has made only one start in the last four months and his absence from the 18-man squad for the EFL Cup final fuelled rumours Mourinho had lost patience with the £28m defender.

Jose Mourinho has preferred Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, both centre-backs, and even the right-footed Matteo Darmian to Shaw in the left-back slot and has made it clear on several occasions he has not been happy with the former Southampton player’s fitness levels following his broken leg last season.

But after responding well to a specific training programme, Shaw has been recalled to Manchester United‘s squad for today’s home clash with Bournemouth with a confidence-lifting message from his manager, who clearly believes he can have a long-term future at the club – if he continues to satisfy his demands on the training pitch.

“In practical terms we have lots of left-backs,” said Mourinho. “It doesn’t look like it but the reality is that Blind, Shaw, Rojo and Darmian can all play at left-back.

“They are different players but the one that should be best of all in a couple of years is Luke, because potentially he should have all the best conditions.

“By age, by physicality, by intensity, by being aggressive going forward, he should be the best. But to be the best you need to work hard. And it’s what he’s trying to do.

“Luke is working hard, he’s trying to improve. He has improved on the physical side by good dedication, specific work. Now he needs some opportunities to feel alive, he needs minutes on the pitch to show evolution is not just physical but mental.

“He is selected [in the squad] for tomorrow so it’s one step up from not even being on the bench in the [EFL Cup] final. Now he becomes an option for us again.”

Mourinho also confirmed Wayne Rooney, who hasn’t played for a month, will also get some action today – either from the start or from the bench – but admits he cannot be certain the United captain will still be with the club next season.

He doesn’t have a problem with Everton boss Ronaldo Koeman’s unashamed “come and join us” message even though he dismissed the notion of Rooney returning to his first club as “nonsense.”

Luke ShawGETTY

Luke Shaw has made only one start in the last four months

But he knows Rooney wants much more game time and, while not pushing the club’s record goalscorer out of the door, he will not stand in his way if he is unhappy.

“Until the end of the season he is 100 per cent with us,” he said. “Next season I would like him to be with us 100 per cent but I can’t say 100 per cent that he will be. I like players to be happy and not just to be with me because I want them with me.”

Bournemouth find themselves only four points above the relegation zone after failing to win since December and manager Eddie Howe says the dire dip in form is taking its toll on his youthful complexion.

“When I look in the mirror I see someone who is aging,” said the 39-year-old. “It’s not good for your health, this game. I’ve got a slightly tired face this time of the year – I could do with a little bit of sunshine.

“But I also see someone who’s determined. I work very hard for the club, for myself and for the Bournemouth people to try and achieve what we want to achieve.

“I do see Bournemouth staying in the Premier League next season. Our destiny is in our own hands. We have it all to do.”

Howe took the plaudits for masterminding Bournemouth’s amazing rise from the bottom of League Two to the Premier League. And he says he should shoulder the blame for their dramatic decline since the turn of the year.

Howe said: “I have always been my harshest critic, as a player and as a manager. The buck stops with me first.

“When you think of the position this club had been in and these players have been in it’s not been a bed of roses.

“That is where you get your strength from. I need to grow strong from this experience and I’m more motivated that I have ever been before.

“We have always tried to defy the odds and will have to do it again. Before the season started there was talk of second season syndrome and that is where we are now.”

Howe fears in-form United talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic will plunge his side deeper into relegation turmoil.

The veteran Swede has scored nine goals in 11 games in 2017 – only one fewer than the entire Bournemouth team combined.

Howe said: “Zlatan is definitely a candidate for player of the season. Take his age out of it, it’s what he has achieved this season and what he has done.

“We played against United on the first day of the season I was very impressed by him. He took his goal well and he has gone on to prove how good he is.

“His sheer number of goals is incredible and his appetite for the game impressed me last week with how he approached that cup final. Even in interviews after you can see how he is built to achieve the success he has. I’m appreciating him on a football level.”
