Lucifer’s fifth and final season was confirmed by executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich on Twitter and confirmed by Netflix.

Despite huge ratings, the show will once again be cancelled after Fox cancelled the show after season three.

Netflix then resurrected the show after a global petition by Lucifer fans who believed the show was cancelled too soon.

They then launched another petition to get Netflix to announce season five, which they dutifully did.

However, it must feel like one step forward and two steps backward for fans as they know face the prospect of losing Lucifer forever.

So, they have set up another petition on Change.org to plead with Netflix to commission a season six.

The petition reads: “It had been announced that season five of Lucifer will be its last and final. This show has many more seasons left in it.

“I can’t understand why they would choose not to continue with the fan reaction of the cancellation after season three and season four, great reviews.

“So please, fellow Lucifans, join me and unite once more to show Netflix what the fans want and how many of us there are.”

The petition had 3,600 signatures when this article was written.

“I was really nervous and at that moment I couldn’t have dreamed that we would get to where we are now.

“I have had the most amazing ride making life-long friends, and playing a character that I truly love.”

He touchingly added: “It has been an utter privilege.”

He continued: “More importantly I want to say YOU the fans have been the cherry on the cake of this whole journey.

“You will forever be precious to me and I cannot thank you enough for your passion, support and kindness for the past four and half years.

“Here’s to a rocking season five and going out on a high!!!!!!! #lucifer.”

Lucifer season 4 is available to stream on Netflix now and season five is expected to start production this year.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

One year after a white-supremacist rally turned violent, ultimately killing Heather Heyer, a Charlottesville local, people gathered to memorialize the one-year anniversary.

Last year, a gathering of white nationalists at the Unite the Right rally clashed with counter-protesters. This year, locals and demonstrators came together to honor Heyer, stand in solidarity against racism, and protest the way police and officials handled last year’s deadly events.

Here’s how Saturday unfolded:

Notably absent from the city was any sign of the white-supremacist organizations that drew thousands of counter-protestors last year.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville ahead of the one-year anniversary, anticipating a repeat of the violence between white supremacists from the Unite the Right rally and counter-protestors, some of whom were members of the left-wing group Antifa.

Some local residents remarked that the heavy police presence this year was too little too late.

“Metro will not be having a separate train, or a separate car, or anything separate for anybody at this event that is going to happen next Sunday,” the chairman of the transit agency’s board and a District of Columbia Council member, Jack Evans, told the BNC 4, referring to the ‘Unite the Right’ march.

On Friday, Evans told Washington Post that the Metrorail was considering providing separate trains or at least train cars for the white nationalists attending the event in attempt to prevent potential clashes between the far-right demonstrators and counter-protesters. The plan envisaged providing the white supremacists with special trains that would pick up at the East Falls Church Metro in Virginia and then transport them to the Foggy Bottom station in Washington DC’s downtown on August 11 and 12.

DC authorities are concerned about scuffles and even more serious confrontations as last year’s rally in Charlottesville, VA where clashes broke out and a woman was killed after a suspected white supremacist rammed his car into the crowd.

The idea, however, provoked an angry reaction from a local trade union of the transport workers, the ATU Local 689, which is a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union – Metro’s biggest such association. “Sources have shared with ATU Local 689 that a hate group with Ku Klux Klan affiliation will be provided three private Metro rail cars and police escort to Foggy Bottom Metro Station for the ‘Unite the Right’ 2018 rally,” the union said as it initially made the transport agency’s plans public.

“More than 80% of Local 689’s membership is people of color, the very people that the Ku Klux Klan and other white nationalist groups have killed, harassed and violated. The union has declared that it will not play a role in their special accommodation,” the ATU Local 689 said.

It then explained that the union’s members are “proud to provide transit to everyone for the many events we have in D.C. including the March of Life, the Women’s March and Black Lives Matters” but have to “draw the line at giving special accommodation to hate groups and hate speech.”

Following the outrage, Evans drastically changed his rhetoric and told the NBC 4 that a plan to provide white supremacists with a special train was actually “never under consideration.” Meanwhile, the forthcoming ‘Unite the Right’ rally remains a source of concern.

The previous such event was held in Charlottesville, Virginia and drew around 500 attendees becoming the largest far-right march in recent US history. However, the event ended up in tragedy when suspected Nazi sympathizer James Alex Fields drove his car into a crowd following the aborted rally. Anti-fascist counter-protester Heather Heyer was killed and 19 others were injured in that incident.

A recent event, involving right-wing marchers and anti-fascist counter-protesters, which was held in Portland, was also followed by violent clashes between the two rival camps.

A violent brawl broke out with people using fireworks, eggs, rocks, bottles and construction equipment, prompting police to revoke the right-wing Patriot Prayer group’s protest permit and to declare a riot situation.

‘Black Klansman’ Trailer: Spike Lee and Jordan Peele Unite, and The Early Reactions Are In https://briefnews.eu/black-klansman-trailer-spike-lee-and-jordan-peele-unite-and-the-early-reactions-are-in/ https://briefnews.eu/black-klansman-trailer-spike-lee-and-jordan-peele-unite-and-the-early-reactions-are-in/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 20:20:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-klansman-trailer-spike-lee-and-jordan-peele-unite-and-the-early-reactions-are-in/ BlacKkKlansman trailer

Focus Features has just unveiled the first trailer for a new undercover thriller called Black Klansman – or BlacKkKlansman, if you prefer its stylized title. John David Washington (Ballers) stars alongside Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) in this incredible true story of a black police officer who infiltrated the notorious Ku Klux Klan hate group in the 1970s, and that’s not the only notable pairing of this film – it also teams producer Jordan Peele (Get Out) with director Spike Lee. Check out the first Black Klansman trailer below.

Black Klansman Trailer

Is it August yet? Because this looks fantastic, and I’d like to see it right now. I don’t watch Ballers so I’m not familiar with John David Washington (a former football star who happens to be the son of Denzel Washington), but this looks like a terrific starring role for him, and he seems very much up to the challenge. Adam Driver, who recently played a goofy redneck in Steven Soderbergh’s heist movie Logan Lucky, continues to showcase his versatility as a performer here. This trailer has singlehandedly catapulted this movie to one of my most anticipated films of the year.

And look at that supporting cast! The Wire‘s Isiah Whitlock Jr., Straight Outta Compton‘s Corey Hawkins, and Topher Grace as KKK grand wizard David Duke? Talk about fun casting. I find Spike Lee to be extremely hit or miss as a filmmaker, so here’s hoping his collaboration with Jordan Peele will result in one of the best movies of his long career.

The movie just debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, and some early reactions are already pouring in:

Here’s the official synopsis:

From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It’s the early 1970s, and Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. Produced by the team behind the Academy-Award® winning Get Out.

BlacKkKlansman arrives in theaters on August 10, 2018.

'Security Council, unite’: US, UK & France want UN to back their illegal Syria strikes https://briefnews.eu/security-council-unite-us-uk-france-want-un-to-back-their-illegal-syria-strikes/ https://briefnews.eu/security-council-unite-us-uk-france-want-un-to-back-their-illegal-syria-strikes/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 03:56:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/security-council-unite-us-uk-france-want-un-to-back-their-illegal-syria-strikes/ Having set themselves above international law by bombing Syria without UN authorization, the US, the UK and France are now going calling on other countries to unite behind their fait accompli and endorse their actions.

American, British and French ships and airplanes fired over 100 missiles at Syria Saturday morning, claiming it was in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Damascus suburb of Douma. The three countries did not wait for UN authorization, or even for evidence from the scene: the international team of experts from the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had just arrived in Syria to investigate when the missiles began to fly.

As US President Donald Trump triumphantly declared “mission accomplished,” his French colleague Emmanuel Macron called for the UN Security Council to step in and pick up the pieces.

“It is now for the UN Security Council to unite and take initiative on the political, chemical and humanitarian questions in Syria,” the French presidency said in a statement after Macron’s teleconference with Trump and British PM Theresa May on Saturday.

During the emergency session of the Security Council on Saturday, Russia proposed a resolution urging the US and its allies to “immediately and without delay cease the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic and refrain from further aggressive acts in violation of the international law and the UN Charter.”

Russia, China and Bolivia voted in favor of the resolution. Four other members abstained, with Ethiopian representatives saying there’s no point in voting for a resolution that would be vetoed anyway. The US, the UK and France ‒ all permanent members with veto powers ‒ voted against, killing the proposal. Apparently, when Macron spoke of unity at the UN, he meant unity behind the actions of London, Paris and Washington.

Willy Wimmer, a former member of Germany’s ruling CDU party, compared the behavior of the UK, the US and France to “the same attitude, which [was] used by Adolf Hitler in 1939 to enter into World War Two.”

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Angela Merkel quickly endorsed their allies’ attempt to take the law into their own hands.

European Council President Donald Tusk likewise cheered on the intervention, saying the EU “will stand with our allies on the side of justice.”

NATO also endorsed the bombing in a statement on Saturday, declaring that the alliance “considers any use of chemical weapons by state or non-state actors to be a threat to international peace and security.”

Dissent in Europe

One notable dissention from the EU and NATO position came from Italy. Rome would not allow the use of NATO bases on its soil for the airstrikes, but agreed to provide “logistical support” to the UK, the US and France.

“Now is not the time for escalation, it’s time for diplomacy to give Syria democracy and pluralism after seven years of horrible conflict,” the outgoing PM, Paolo Gentiloni, said.

However, his potential replacement, Matteo Salvini, the leader of the Northern League party, did not mince words when condemning the attack.

“We are still looking for Saddam’s ‘chemical weapons,’ we are still paying for the crazy war in Libya, and someone with a quick trigger finger is insisting on ‘smart missiles,’ only helping the nearly defeated Islamic terrorists. Total madness, stop it,” he posted on Facebook.

The head of Germany’s Left Party (Die Linke), Sahra Wagenknecht, described the missile strike as “another military violation of international law.”

“Since the illegal war against Yugoslavia in 1999, they [the US, the UK and France] want to have their own international structure,” Wimmer, former vice-chair of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, told RT. “They are no longer interested in having an international organization which can work. And, therefore, they do their utmost to create their own world, where they can do what they want to do.”

Macron’s decision to blindly follow the US was a “big mistake,” Alain Corvez, a former adviser for the French ministries of defense and interior, told RT. “As a French patriot I am very disappointed with the loss of credibility that we had in the world.”

The US, the UK and France set out to “wreck international law without approval from UN and their own parliaments,” Corvez said. They launched a “small strike without big consequences, because they understood that Russia would not let them crush Syria.”

Concern among neutrals

Sweden, which is a member of the EU but not of NATO, also called for the Syrian question to be resolved within the framework of the UN charter and international law, careful not to bring up the fact that both have been violated by the US, the UK and France.

It was pointless to discuss whether the US-UK-French strikes were legal, said Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström. “They happened. Now we need to talk about what to do next.”

Latin American leaders also called for solutions within international law. Peru, which currently chairs the Security Council and is hosting the Summit of the Americas in Lima, called for moderation from all parties and backed a “political solution” for Syria, according to its foreign ministry.

“It’s time to find permanent solutions based in the international law to a war that has been going for far too long and ended too many lives,” Brazilian President Michel Temer told the leaders at the summit.

President Mauricio Macri of Argentina also called for everyone to work “in the framework of existing international commitments.”

The bombing of Syria reminded Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic of the NATO attack on his own country in 1999.

“Being on the side of power does not mean being on the side of morality and justice,” Vucic said, emphasizing Serbia’s current military neutrality.

Gaddafi’s elusive son can unite Libyans in the national interest – Saif’s lawyer to RT https://briefnews.eu/gaddafis-elusive-son-can-unite-libyans-in-the-national-interest-saifs-lawyer-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/gaddafis-elusive-son-can-unite-libyans-in-the-national-interest-saifs-lawyer-to-rt/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 06:58:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gaddafis-elusive-son-can-unite-libyans-in-the-national-interest-saifs-lawyer-to-rt/ Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saif Al-Islam, who plans to run in the presidential election this year, is widely supported by ordinary people hoping to rescue Libya from the chaos caused by the NATO-backed revolt, his lawyer told RT.

While it is not yet certain when Libya will vote in a presidential election, due to varying interpretations of the electoral process by the power-seeking factions of the country, Saif Al Islam Gaddafi, son of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, announced on Monday his bid to run in the race as a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Libya (PFLL). His candidacy bid was confirmed to RT by his lawyer, Khaled Al-Ghwail, who believes that his client has a good chance of winning.

“Saif al-Islam has many supporters. They are ordinary people. Even those who have previously committed to the [Arab Spring] cause now support the comprehensive vision of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi,” Al-Ghwail told RT.

“Saif al-Islam is capable of uniting Libyans around himself on the basis of national interests and those decisions that the Libyans themselves will take,” Al-Ghwail added. “This is a reform project, which should lead Libya into a calm harbor.”

Gaddafi Jr., who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his role in the Syrian civil war, has not appeared in public since his release from prison in June 2017, where he had been detained by a local militia following his capture in November 2011. While in captivity in the southern city of Zintan, he was sentenced to death in absentia by a UN-backed government court in Tripoli. However, two years later, he was released after being granted amnesty by the Tobruk-based parliament, one of the country’s two competing centers of power.

Ever since his release Gadaffi Jr’s exact whereabouts have remained unknown. His political bidding on the ground is done by the members of PFLL who are spread out across Libya. Such a clandestine political campaign is needed to ensure the safety of the candidate.

“The whereabouts of Saif al-Islam are not disclosed for security reasons,” Al-Ghwail told RT from Tunisia, where Saif is reportedly hiding. “If Saif al-Islam comes out in public today, he will surely be assassinated.”

Al-Ghwail noted that his client will address the entire Libyan nation live on TV when the “time is right” for Saif to appear in public. “In the meantime, there is a large team in all parts of Libya and beyond that works in a coordinated and systematic way to develop positions and programs of the Safari al-Islam.”

The lawyer spoke extremely highly of the activists who are campaigning for Gaddafi on the ground, dismissing any speculation that the late Colonel’s son might be out to avenge his father’s murder.

“There are patriotic young people. They are real enthusiasts. They do not care about political preferences. The main thing that excites them is their patriotic attitude. They saw in the reforms offered by Saif al-Islam an effective means to combat corruption in the current state structures in Libya,” Al-Ghwail noted.

While the campaign to bring the Gaddafi clan back to power has already begun, the “decisive word” will be given by all Libyans. “It is the Libyan people who must form, on the basis of their constitution, such a state system and such state power as it deems most appropriate for themselves,” Al-Ghwail told RT.

Libya descended into chaos after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, with multiple governments competing for control of the oil-rich country. Currently, the north African country is divided between the Tobruk-based parliament and the UN-backed government in Tripoli. The power vacuum in the country, which emerged after the disastrous NATO-led military intervention in 2011, has also been exploited by militants and terrorist groups, including Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) offshoots.

“The current situation in Libya emerged after 2011 as a result of the overthrow of the institutions of the Libyan state, and not just the ruling regime,” Al-Ghwail noted. “Libya today is deprived of its sovereignty. This is a state of lawlessness. It is ruled by gangs and illegal armed groups.”

The main political agenda of the 45-year-old Gaddafi’s son now is to unify the country and expel extremists from Libya. “Libya will not be a country of organized crime, illegal migration, and human trafficking,” Al-Ghwail noted. “We will defend the interests of the Libyan people and its wealth, the squandering of which is unacceptable. The Libyan people must decide for themselves their own destiny.”

At the same time, he believes NATO countries that destroyed Libya should apologize to the Libyan people for the demise of their nation. “The natural wealth of Libya is being stolen today in broad daylight, Libyan oil is being stolen under the auspices of the international community,” Al-Ghwail said. “We want NATO to apologize for what they did to the civilian population, for the plunder of Libyan riches.”

Last July, during a meeting in Paris, representatives of the UN-backed Government of National Accord based in Tripoli and the elected parliament based in the eastern city of Tobruk, agreed to hold elections in the first half of 2018. Gaddafi’s candidacy will be officially registered at the opening of registration lists in the elections.

The date, however, has not been announced yet. Before any election can take place, Human Rights Watch on Wednesday called on the United Nations to “urge the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord and competing authorities in eastern Libya to create conditions conducive to a free and fair vote before rushing to hold general elections in 2018.”

5 global groups aim to unite the world through games https://briefnews.eu/5-global-groups-aim-to-unite-the-world-through-games/ https://briefnews.eu/5-global-groups-aim-to-unite-the-world-through-games/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 13:39:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/5-global-groups-aim-to-unite-the-world-through-games/

Five global organizations are coming together for the U Festival in Ethiopia to honor the World Interfaith Harmony Week, and one of the ways they hope to inspire acts of compassion and advance world peace is through games.

Compassion Games International has organized a week-long “coopetition,” a community engagement experience that invites people around the world to promote acts of compassion. Everyone is invited to participate in the offline games. The event takes place over seven days from February 1 to February 7, and contestants will log acts of kindness, compassion, and peace.

The acts in the World Interfaith Harmony Week Coopetition will be logged on the Compassion Games map, with groups and regions competing to get the highest marks on the leaderboard. The idea is to inspire collaborative acts of service and to strengthen mutual respect, understanding, and harmony between people of all backgrounds.

The five groups include Compassion Games International; Unity Earth, organizer of the U Day Festival in Ethiopia; the Peace Pledge Project; the Empowerment Institute; and 21st Century Leadership for Diversity.

The latter is a group of leaders in the video game and tech industries, dedicated to making the workforce more diverse.

“Part of Leadership for Diversity’s mission is to get us to look within, listen more, and to create a more diverse, equitable and compassionate industry; to create an environment where everyone feels safe to truly collaborate,” said Megan Gaiser, founder of 21st Century Leadership for Diversity, in an email. “By participating in Compassion Game’s ‘Best Game on Earth’, it is our hope to mobilize leaders in our industry with a focus on actionable efforts we can all do.”

King Abdullah II of Jordan first proposed the World Interfaith Harmony Week at the UN General Assembly in 2010. The UN unanimously adopted it and set the first week of February for the World Interfaith Harmony Week.

The Kickoff Event for the 2018 World Interfaith Harmony Week Compassion Games is the upcoming U Day Festival in Ethiopia that brings together global, spiritual and religious leaders with international change makers and musical artists. Mulatu Teshoe Wirtu, the president of Ethiopia, will commemorate the week.

Separately, Compassion Games has been honoring video game industry veterans for their contributions to diversity. Jon Ramer, founder of Compassion Games, passed a ceremonial torch to Gaiser last fall, and Gaiser passed the Compassion Torch to others at the recent Casual Connect USA event last week. I participated in one of the ceremonies and found it quite rewarding. The recipients included:
