Flight attendants are subject to very strict rules when it comes to getting the job. Certain restrictions are for safety, such as particular height requirements or particular fitness levels. Some airlines dictate the amount of make-up crew wear, however, or how they appear. One flight attendant has revealed what the outfit they wear really means. Heather Poole, a flight attendant for over 15 years revealed that older staff would wear shorter skirts. This is due to passing the designated time to be part of the crew. She told Mental Floss: “Seniority even determines the length of our skirts—we can’t hem them above a certain length until we’re off probation. “Afterward, it’s OK to shorten the hem and show a little leg.” She revealed the secret in her book Cruising Altitude: Tales of Crashpads, Crew Drama, and Crazy Passengers at 35,000 Feet. Being more senior also dictates many other things such as which bunk you had, which floor you slept on and how quiet your room was, according to Poole. Thankfully, weight restrictions no longer exist for most airlines, unlike in the 1960s. During this time, also known as the Golden Age of flying, many women had to be at least five foot two, and weigh no more than 130 pounds. Modern regulations are dictated due to safety, so height and weight depend on how well the person can work in the cabin. For example, being too tall can restrict sitting in the emergency exit seat and prove a safety risk. Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific removed the mandatory skirt in the uniform for flight attendants earlier this year. Female cabin crew members can now wear trousers if they wish. British Airways cabin crew who are female can also wear trousers if they choose. However, airlines in Malaysia have come under fire after being accused of having outfits that were “too revealing”. Malindo and AirAsia flight attendants have been blamed for wearing clothes that are too tight fitting and “sexy”.
Grubb’s officiating career would eventually span about two decades and three sports: basketball, rowing, and football. Early on, she began reading the Florida High School Athletic Association Officials Guidebook. On page two, one guideline reads: “Officials shall … dress neatly and appropriately.”
There was one problem with that: The FHSAA’s official supplier, Gerry Davis Sports, didn’t provide much clothing in women’s sizes. Grubb tried to have her referee clothing tailored to fit, but it can cost a lot of money to try to adjust men’s clothing to fit a woman’s body, and even with tailoring, she told me, her clothes looked “less than ideal.”
This went on until last year, when Grubb—who is now a scoreboard and clock operator for football games—decided to complain. She had made a name for herself as a top arbitration and mediation attorney in Alabama and Tennessee, taking on high-profile gender-discrimination cases. Now, she began to see the uniform issue as another example of gender discrimination. Grubb emailed the FHSAA in June 2017 to complain: “Your female officials, myself included, grow weary of looking baggy, saggy in ill-fitting men’s apparel.”
Jeremy Hernandez, the assistant director of officials for the FHSAA, told me the association “will be doing our best to work with the vendors moving forward to ensure our official’s uniform concerns are being heard.” When Hernandez first received Grubb’s email, he said he would look into the matter. But when Hernandez looked around to see if he could find other vendors who had more options for women—and for football officials, specifically—he found that they didn’t exist.
The lack of appropriate clothing for female sports officials is a widespread problem. When Sarah Thomas, the first female NFL referee, was hired in 2015, the league had to figure out what uniform she would wear, since they only made them in men’s sizes. And not having appropriate uniforms hinders female officials in significant ways. Having pants that fit properly can help add height, which matters when a 5’6 female official is trying to establish on-field authority with a 6’2 male player. And if a woman doesn’t look as polished as the men on her officiating team, she can immediately appear out of place—a perception women are already trying to shake. “It’s hard enough being a female and walking out on that ball field and giving everybody the impression you belong there,” Ila Valcarcel, a baseball umpire, told me. “They don’t know you, so your impression is what they get to see and if what they see is equipment and clothing that don’t fit, you already have one strike against you.”
Valcarcel, who has umpired Major League Baseball spring-training games and now works as an umpire supervisor for Perfect Game USA, an organization that promotes baseball, found that the chest plates and shin guards meant to fit men tended to leave gaps where balls could hit her. She began teaching women how to take apart and mold their chest plates, which are built for flatter, wider, male chests, so that they “don’t look like Ninja Turtles.” She heats up shin guards with a heat gun and remolds them to fit the women’s legs.*
In the male-dominated field of professional baseball umpiring, there are few mentors who can help women dress: Only eight women have ever umpired in the minor leagues, and there has never been a woman umpire at the major-league level. “For us, that’s half the battle right away, just presenting as polished and professional,” said Perry Barber, who has been an umpire for 38 years.
Sports officiating isn’t the only field that has failed to consider women’s bodies when making uniforms. Some women who play sports themselves find it difficult to find the right equipment. While there are shoulder pads made explicitly for women who play tackle football, some smaller players have trouble finding pads that both fit and are constructed to withstand adult impact; junior-sized shoulder pads may fit adult women well, but they aren’t built to take the kind of hits dished out in an adult league like the Women’s Football Alliance.
Female professionals in non-sports fields contend with ill-fitting attire, too. With women making up more than half of all medical-school students in the U.S., it makes sense that they should be able to find lab coats that fit. Having a properly fitting coat is also important for scientists, who sometimes work with dangerous chemicals and are put at risk if parts of their skin are exposed. In a story for Racked last year, though, Alexandra Bausch wrote that most lab coats aren’t designed with women in mind. Even when lab coats are made specifically for women, they’re often a smaller version of men’s coats, which fail to take into consideration differences in women’s wardrobes, such as lower cuts on the necklines of shirts.
The dearth of women’s clothing for certain professions reflects a broader numbers issue: The fields with limited clothing choices for women—sports, science—tend to be ones in which women are underrepresented. While women have made leaps in many fields, they still have a long way to go when it comes to officiating. And for many apparel companies, it doesn’t make business sense to carry items that don’t seem likely to sell well. Scott Kennedy, a business-development specialist at Ump-Attire.com, which provides uniforms for Minor League Baseball as well as other sports attire, said in an email, “We make multiple requests with manufacturers to fill the female’s industry needs, but the minimums”—the number of items required in a bulk order—“are so high that it’s not economically feasible” to offer many options for women.
The FHSAA began a new contracting partnership with multiple uniform suppliers, as opposed to the single supplier it had worked with in the past. Of the uniform suppliers from which FHSAA officials can now purchase logoed clothing, a couple of their websites advertise women’s shirt sizes for some FHSAA sports, and some items can be made upon request. Still, no FHSAA-logoed pants, or umpire equipment, seem to be available in women’s sizes. It’s an improvement, but, as far as Grubb is concerned, not a big enough one.
Not long ago, Grubb followed up with Hernandez, of the FHSAA, to ask that the absence of women’s clothing be addressed at the association’s annual conference. Hernandez promised a discussion but added, “We tried to base our decision on what was best for our associations as a whole and not based on a specific gender.” Refereeing is a shrinking field, though, and it’s hard to recruit women when there isn’t clothing available that fits them.

Martin Lewis, 45, also known as Money Saving Expert or MSE, said you can get a tax rebate of £250 if you wear a uniform for work.
The Money Saving Expert told This Morning viewers those with a work uniform that they wash themselves simply had to fill in a form to get the money back.
You do not need to wear a full uniform – even a “branded T-shirt” would qualify for the refund, he said.
“On Monday I was talking about 5 refunds you may be due, but I only managed to get to four of them.
“So let me pick up the last one – it’s the uniform tax rebate,” he added.
“If you wear a recognisable uniform to work, even if it’s just a branded t-shirt, and you wash it yourself, you may be able to reclaim hundreds of pounds of tax back.
“Like Jackie who tweeted: “@MartinSLewis we got a £250 cheque today after writing to the HMRC about a uniform tax rebate for my husband! Thank you!”
“The amount you get varies from £12 to £74 a year depending on your tax rate and the industry you work in, plus you can go back four years in total, so this can be £100s for some.
“And you don’t need to pay anyone to do this, just fill out the P87 claim form on the Gov website.
“Once you’ve registered, your tax code will change, so you’ll be taxed less in the future.”
He also outlined another couple of money saving and discount tips.
If you buy two selected No7 items from Boots (online or in-store), you can get a free ‘Summer Treats’ gift box set containing mascara, primer, nail polish and facial sun cream until Tuesday 5 June (until stocks last).
As the cheapest combo of two No7 items included in the offer is £12 for two 10ml No7 nail polishes at £6 each – and the set is worth £20ish, you’ll get about £32ish of beauty products for £12 – so assuming they’re something you’d use anyway, it’s a good deal.
The free set will be automatically added to your basket online, but you’ll need to pick it up from the shelf and take it to the till in store.
Go online to the Family & Friends Railcard website and enter the code FMH20 before 11.59pm next Tuesday (22 May).
You’ll be able to get an annual Family & Friends Railcard for £24, which usually costs £30 – ideal for the half-term holiday.
The railcard gets you a third off train tickets for up to four adults when travelling together with up to four children aged 5-15 getting 60% off.
Even if you don’t use the train that often, just one big rail trip across the country would make the railcard worth it.
Celebrating its 100th birthday in August 2019, British Airways are set to redesign their iconic uniform for all its customer-facing staff, it has been revealed.
The British flag carrier confirmed it will be introducing a new uniform as part of its centenary celebrations.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, British Airways commented: “We’re very much looking forward to celebrating our centenary next year.
“Our uniforms have been iconic symbols of the British Airways brand throughout our history, so we are excited that during this landmark year we will be introducing a new one to take us into the next chapter in our history. We look forward to sharing more details as soon as we are able to.”
However, specific design details are still under wraps. According to cabin crew blog, Paddle Your Own Kanoo, there’s rumours that “acclaimed British fashion house Burberry has been selected to design the new look for the airline’s 40,000+ employees”.
The airline’s last uniform was designed in 2004 by ex-Chanel and Givenchy designer Julien MacDonald and is worn by staff worldwide including cabin crew, dispatchers and check-in agents.
MacDonald said: “I was thrilled to be asked to design a new uniform for British Airways.
“As a designer for some of the world’s most glamorous women, it was a great challenge to design a uniform that is worn by such a large number of staff of different ages and sizes, and who work in many different roles worldwide.
“The uniform proudly signals the airline’s British heritage and blues, through the quality and attention to detail and in the overall professional image to the collection.”
MacDonald made the controversial decision to give woman a choice between skirts and trousers.
Part of its heritage, the uniform is an iconic pinstripe navy blue. Staff are subject to strict ‘Uniform Wearers Standards’ which outlines how the uniform must be worn.
Female flight attendants must wear a pinstripe navy blue smart fitted jacket, skirt with the hemline on the knee or pant trousers with a white blouse tucked in. They must also wear a blue, red and white cravat and either court shoes or loafers with hosiery.
Men must also wear a smart fitted jacket with trousers at least 25mm off the ground.
They must also wear a white shirt tucked in and a tie in the iconic blue, white and red.
All staff are required to wear the brevet, encrusted with the ‘astral crown’ and a rising sun. The pin also proudly states the airline’s slogan: To fly. To serve.
From the 1930s to present, the airline’s uniform is the most powerful symbol of the brand and recognisable around the world.

The controversial episode happened as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was addressing a provincial congress of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the southern province of Gaziantep on Saturday. The Turkish leader used the occasion to whip up public support for the ongoing military operation targeting Kurdish militias in Syria – and to remind those who have completed their service but still had “active mobilization orders” to be ready to be recruited again if the situation requires.
At one point, a young girl in the hall, who was dressed in military uniform complete with a maroon beret worn by the Turkish Special Operations Forces, caught Erdogan’s attention, according to TV footage of the speech. He invited the child, who looked about four or five years-old, to come to the stage next to him. She did, although the attention apparently made her uncomfortable, judging by her sobbing.
“Look what you see here! Girl, what are you doing here? We have our maroon berets here, but maroon berets never cry,” the Turkish president told the child in an apparent attempt to calm her.
“She has a Turkish flag in her pocket too,” Erdogan then told the audience, embracing the girl.
“If she is martyred [killed], they will lay a flag on her, God willing,” he then added in a bizarre twist: “She is ready for everything, isn’t she?”
The confused girl only answered: “Yes.” Erdogan planted a kiss on the girl’s face and let her go.
The bizarre scene was accompanied by the party members’ cheers “Chief! Take us to Afrin!” according to some local media reports. The audience referred to the northern Syrian enclave held by the Kurdish militias, whom the Turkish forces have been targeting in their ‘Olive Branch’ military operation.
The incident has already been criticized by the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) that opposes Ankara’s operation in the Afrin region. “The mindset that abuses children by promising them death will lose. We will win the struggle for the children’s free and happy life!” the party said in a Twitter post.

Erdogan’s apparent PR stunt was also slammed by the HDP member and the former co-chair, Ertugrul Kurkcu, who said that “kids are abused to show that the war is legitimate.”

The Turkish military launched its latest operation against the YPG – a Kurdish-led militia it considers to be a wing of the PKK, an armed movement that Ankara lists as terrorists – last month. The Kurds control several enclaves in northern Syria, including Afrin, which they secured from Islamist militants and terrorists over the course of the Syrian conflict with active US-led coalition’s backing.
A total of 1,780 “terrorists” have been “neutralized” since Ankara began launching air strikes and its troops advanced into the Kurdish-held territories, according to the Turkish General Staff. Ankara insists that the offensive is solely aimed at neutralizing threats to its national security, denying allegations that it has targeted civilians.
Damascus has repeatedly condemned the operation as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and an “aggression” claiming innocent civilian lives, yet so far has hesitated to deploy its regular army in the region. Militias loyal to Damascus, however, arrived in the Afrin area last week to support the US-backed Kurds against Ankara, further complicating the situation in northern Syria.

Pilots are often seen as having a great job by travelling the world for free.
In reality, it is a difficult career with extreme training and tests to pass to make sure they are fit to fly thousands of people every year.
Due to this, many who work in the travel role admit that they are unable to switch off when a passenger, and are always alert for any mysterious sounds or smells in the case of an emergency.
One pilot has revealed one of the things they are banned from doing when they are in their uniform.
They aren’t allowed to be seen drinking alcohol if they are still wearing the clothes that they have flown in.
Nathan Burns, a former captain from 2000 to 2016 explained on Quora: “Airline pilots (and really any professional pilot should be this way) are not allowed to consume alcohol while in uniform.
“So even if you’ve just flown LA to London (and are done flying for the day) and you just want to grab a pint and head to your room, you’ll still have to change, or at least remove any and all insignia that would identify you or the company you work for.”
Pilots must be seen to represent the company they work for, and drinking on duty could cause concern with other passengers.
If they are seen drinking, it could make other people feel uneasy if they are due to fly again.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) explains how dangerous it could be for pilots who fly under the influence: “The majority of adverse effects produced by alcohol relate to the brain, the eyes, and the inner ear — three crucial organs to a pilot.
“Brain effects include impaired reaction time, reasoning, judgment, and memory.
“Visual symptoms include eye muscle imbalance, which leads to double vision and difficulty focusing.
“Inner ear effects include dizziness, and decreased hearing perception.”
A rule that pilots many adhere to is called the “8-hour rule”, or the “Bottle to Throttle”.
This means that they must not have another drink eight hours before they are needed to take the wheel.
Pilots will also never discuss their personal life during the last half an hour of a flight.
This is due to the black box that records within the cockpit.
Flight attendants in Malaysia have been deemed to be dressed too provocatively on certain airlines.
Malaysian Politicians Senator Abdullah Mat Yasim and Senator Megat Zulkarnain Omardin have asked the aviation commission to investigate, according to The Straits Times.
Airlines such as Malindo and AirAsia have been accused, with the outfits being ‘too revealing’.
Firefly, another Malaysian airline has also been included in the discussion.
AirAsia currently have a uniform with white shirts, red jackets and red skirts with a slit, whilst Malindo has a white cardigan and purple patterned maxi skirts.
However, due to their tight-fitting nature, they have caused concern over the impression they may leave on travellers.
During a parliament session this month, Omardin stated: “My wife is worried whenever I fly alone on Malindo or AirAsia. This is a real hassle for me.
“The Malaysian Aviation Commission must really look into this.”
As Malaysia is a predominately Islamic country, it is thought that they should conform to the standards of the region.
Senator Hanafi Mamat warned that it could mean tourists are confused regarding the etiquette in the country, as they are dressed “sexily and disrespectfully”.
Yam also stated that it could “arouse passengers” according to The Straits Times.
Flight attendants are also not allowed to be seen eating on a plane.
A cabin crew member has revealed that they must eat out of sight in the galley whilst inflight.
Quora user Jeremy Thompson explained: “When I worked, we were always told to be discreet when eating and drinking.
“We couldn’t be seen by passengers walking down the aisle eating food or drinking.”

It is now official. The NBA will no longer have jerseys with sleeves.
In January, Sara Germano of the Wall Street Journal reported that Nike wasn’t planning to make sleeved NBA jerseys as they take over the league’s uniform and apparel contract from Adidas. However, many people noted that the wording left open the possibility of Nike officials changing their minds and no official announcement was ever made by Nike or the NBA.
However, multiple sources have confirmed to Business Insider that NBA teams will not have sleeved jerseys for the 2017-18 season.
In recent months, most teams have unveiled their main home and road uniforms — now dubbed “Association” and “Icon” uniforms as teams can now more freely choose which to wear at home and on the road. Teams will also have a pair of alternate uniforms that have not been released yet. In recent years, it was those alternate unis that often had sleeves, but any doubt the new alternates having sleeves is now gone.
The Golden State Warriors were the first team to wear a sleeved jersey, debuting their version during the 2012-13 season, and a handful of teams joined them the following season. During the 2016-17 season, 19 of the 30 NBA teams had a sleeved jersey.
The jerseys were contentious among both the players and the fans. Many fans simply hated the nontraditional look, while many players complained about the fit, comfort, and the impact the sleeves had on their shooting.
During the 2013-14 season, many players voiced their complaints about the sleeves being too tight, with LeBron James emphatically saying, “I can’t shoot with these!” The following season, LeBron was famously caught on camera ripping open the sleeves after some missed shots.
Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesEventually, the sleeves were loosened and players warmed up to them. LeBron and the Cavs even grew superstitiously attached to their sleeved black jerseys during their run to the 2015-16 NBA championship. The Cavs wore the sleeved jerseys during road games in the finals — a rule at the time would not allow the Cavs to wear them at home — including their decisive Game 7 win over the Warriors in Oakland.
The disappearance of the sleeves is not the only league-wide change being made to NBA uniforms. The new jerseys will also feature the Nike swoosh logo on the front, or in the case of the Charlotte Hornets, who are owned by Michael Jordan, the Jordan Brand Jumpman logo. NBA uniforms in previous years did not have the Adidas logo. Also, about half the teams have sold advertising patches that will be featured on the front of the jerseys.
