GUEST:
WebVR being a game-changer for the VR industry is a message that I’ve been eager to spread for the past couple of years. The JavaScript API that enables you to load VR experiences on your browser enjoys all the benefits that the open web has to offer an emerging tech (like no friction or walled gardens) is in an interesting enough place that, even if there were no new developments, 2018 is already shaping up to be an amazing year for immersive browsing.
And yet within months the WebVR API will shift gears and become the WebXR API, a combined framework that welcomes WebAR into the family, and thereby allows developers to create immersive content that runs on all VR and AR devices. So, while the rest of the industry continually falls prey to fragmentation, this web-based standard offers us an alternative vision that unifies the entire spectrum of immersive computing.
In fact, it makes the immersive web inherently interoperable; a feat no other platform can even come close to imitating.
“AR and VR share many technologies, from spatial trackers to head-worn displays to interaction devices; from a purely technical standpoint, combining device support into one API will hopefully simplify both the implementation and the use of the API.” Blair MacIntyre, the principle research scientist in the emerging technologies group at Mozilla, told me. “The bigger significance is that by making one API, it is easier for developers to target the spectrum of ways their content can be experienced by users. A key characteristic of the web is that you can visit a web page from the device or browser of your choice, and have a reasonable expectation that you can access the content in some form.”
Above: Mozilla A-Painter on WebXR
Developers can now look forward to creating a single web page, for example, that will be responsive across all platforms and devices, creating use cases that allow digital objects to spring in and out of virtual worlds and appear into the mixed realities that blend seamlessly into the real world. Content will shift back and forth between VR and AR and, naturally, the use cases are exceedingly broad, versatile, and invites developers to consider cross-device responsiveness from the outset in developing XR content.
“There are plenty of scenarios where it would make sense to have the application be responsive and go from an VR to an AR. Immediately I think of education, shopping and training scenarios.” Diego Gonzalez, a web advocate at Samsung Internet, told me. “Possibly the most important one being education, where objects can be in a virtual place and interact in a simulation with the user, and then they can be brought to the ‘real world’ to manipulate and take a closer look at. In this case the combination of being able to inspect something ‘onsite’ and then see how it behaves/operates in a different environment.”

Brandon Jones, Chrome WebVR developer, describes it like this: “Today we tend to think of VR devices as headsets and AR devices as handheld phones, so I’ll use that for the example: VR is great at giving you a sense of scale relative to yourself, while today’s mobile AR is great at giving you a sense of scale relative to your environment. So imagine you’re looking for a piece of furniture or a TV or something similar for your home. An app built for both VR or AR could let you stand next to the object in VR, at the correct scale, to get a sense for how big it is. The AR side of it could then project that same object into your room to indicate it if will fit the space. Of course, the really exciting point will be when you can do both with a single headset, getting that personal sense of scale and grounding in your environment simultaneously.”
Jones also co-chairs what has recently been renamed the Immersive Web Community Group, which was established under the W3C Community Groups organization in order to play the essential role of developing the WebXR API with the active participation of all the major browser vendors and the wider developer community. It brings all of the key players to the table so that they can work together in moving the standard through the W3C standards process.
“We’re talking it one step further, though, and working to establish the Immersive Web Community Group as an incubator for any standards related to how the web interacts with immersive computing. By encouraging any new immersive web features to be developed under the same banner we can ensure that those features complement and enhance one another.” Jones told me.

The WebXR API should be made accessible to developers for early testing in Q1 2018, and you can be sure to expect to see increasing coverage as the months unfold and we inch closer to the standard becoming a stable browser feature. When it does make its public debut, you can bet that it will upset a lot of the market forecasts that have been crunched together by pundits who have assumed all along that VR and AR reflected two distinct and separate industries. It seems immersive computing was always destined to be a lot more mixed.

The Canadian coach of the South Korean women’s hockey team says she has “mixed feelings” about including players from North Korea on her roster.
Sarah Murray, a dual Canadian-American citizen and the daughter of former NHL coach Andy Murray, is concerned about the timing of the decision to ice a unified team.
A deal to combine North and South Korean women’s hockey players on one team was reached Wednesday, pending approval from International Olympic Committee.
During their third day of talks in about a week, senior officials also reached an agreement that would see athletes marching together under a “unification flag” depicting their peninsula during the opening ceremony, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said.
While Murray acknowledged having the two countries come together at the Olympics is “great for the politics and world relations,” she said she would have preferred “this had been done three to four years ago, when we started this journey.”
“I have mixed feelings about this combination,” she said in an email to The Canadian Press.
Murray was hired to lead the South Korean program in 2014.
If a joint hockey squad is realized, it would be the Koreas’ first unified team in an Olympics.
The idea of North Koreans joining their Olympic team was “very sudden,” said Murray.
“We heard unofficial rumours about the possibility four to five days ago, but we didn’t believe it because it was so close to the start of the Olympics,” she said. “However, in the last couple of days, things have gotten much more serious.”
The IOC is due to meet with officials from the two Koreas, along with Pyeongchang organizing committee members, on Saturday at its headquarters in Switzerland.
South Korea also wants the IOC to allow the hockey team’s 23-player Olympic roster to be expanded so that several North Korean players can be added without removing any of the South Korean players.
According to Yonhap news agency, Murray told reporters on Tuesday that adding players so close to the Games “is a little bit dangerous just for team chemistry because the girls have been together for so long.”
The potential move has garnered the support of South Korea president Moon Jae-in, who said during a meeting with his country’s athletes on Wednesday that a joint hockey team would be a historic event that moves the hearts of people around the world.
South Korea’s Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae-hyun told a regular briefing Wednesday that the government will try to make sure the joint team’s formation doesn’t cause any negative effects on South Korean players.
“It is the government’s basic stance that we will make sure there is no negative impact on our athletes,” Tae-hyun said.
The South Korean team recently returned to the country after holding a training camp in the United States. Canadians Danelle Im and Caroline Park are on the South Korea roster.
South and North Korea played against each other in the lower tier of the 2017 world championship. The South shut out the North 3-0.
South Korea is in a group with Switzerland, Sweden and Japan at the Olympics and opens preliminary round play on Feb. 10 against the Swiss.

GUEST:
Optimizing ads are a hot topic these days, and we’re constantly witnessing disruption aimed at improving advertising transaction standards. Why? At the end of the day, it’s all about one thing — helping publishers maximize their revenue, and part of that discussion has been around a topic called header bidding.
Header bidding is an effort to address fairness within a real-time advertising auction. Online publishers add a short snippet of code into their page header that opens up more auctions and unlocks more money. It utilizes commonly bought prices as the targeting strings of line items, which are then prioritized in the ad server to be triggered. So the strings with the highest prices will have greater chance in delivering. The last element for this work is invoking the ad requests the moment the publisher’s header is loaded. So by the time the ad server is making a decision — all advertisers trying to get their hands on a 300-by-250 banner are all set and ready to go.
That is, in a nutshell, what a header bidding is: A very smart hack.
Header bidding helps online publishers earn more revenue, and what’s not to love about that? However, it’s not as effective for mobile in-app advertising for multiple reasons.
For starters, when implementing header bidding in an in-app environment, this simple concept is missing:

. Yes, let’s all agree that there is no header in mobile in-app, literally! But to go a bit deeper, the real reasons behind the limitation are:
Those factors put a roadblock on header bidding in mobile app. But when we take one more step back and look at the real problem header bidding is trying to solve, the challenge also exists in mobile in-app advertising — waterfall methods are generally unfair.
To understand the rise of favoritism when placing bids for ads in mobile apps, let’s take a look at the transaction value chain when buying ads on web vs. mobile in-app.
In web, here are the players, each taking their own cut in the transaction:

This is the picture in mobile in-app:

So why doesn’t mobile app follow web’s lead? Well, it’s import to realize that gaming has one of the largest potential impression volume for in-app advertising based on players’ time spent. For example, according to eMarketer, the average U.S. adult will spend 23 minutes a day playing games via mobile apps. But the network/mediation model initially was a way to fulfill the gaming markets’ needs of mobile in-app advertising. With that, a few things must be understood:
These two conditions aren’t changing anytime soon, so with this in mind and thinking outside the box, how can fairness be created when bidding in the mobile in-app space? With great power comes great responsibilities.
In order for publishers to find success, they need to earn money so they can keep doing what they love –making amazing entertainment experiences. And one approach to help achieve that success is to start shaking up the industry a bit. To create fairness when bidding takes place in the mobile in-app space, those who should first take the plunge are the networks/mediations by doing: a Unified Auction for true competition across all demand sources.
You’ve heard the term. It is a 100 percent unified, single-tier auction without bias or influence. Which simply means, the demand source with the highest bid wins — no ifs, ands, or buts. This takes the best parts of header bidding, such as leveling the playing field within a fair auction. But, it doesn’t bring to the table all the performance issues, frequency capping problems and troubleshooting complexities that come with the hacks involved in header bidding. Ultimately, this helps democratize development for publishers while maximizing their revenue.
For example, this is what Unified Auction is:

And, this is what Unified Auction is not: (but are some of the standards for in-app today)

In this type of waterfall method, even when the supply team has “direct” demand, simply put, they control auction fairness, and is sometimes internally influenced by this ‘direct’ demand. When you manipulate controls to win, even for internally influenced “direct” demand, the highest value source does not necessarily win. To be independent of this influence, a demand channel needs to operate in fairness and in the best interest of the publisher.
For example:
Web: Now remember earlier, this is the same flow of all the players involved that we described earlier.

Current in-app: What’s important to note here is the way the Network/Mediator falls within the same bucket and is one in the same. Not a good combination.

Proposed in-app: Simply put, instead of a Network/Mediator being one in the same, here we clearly have two parties. Demand that has bidder technology representing the advertiser, and Supply that’s technology representing the publisher.

With these two parties participating in a fair unified auction, publishers will have more revenue lift fueled by ads. In return, advertisers get fair results. It’s great for the advertising ecosystem and networks and mediators should embrace it.

Periscope Data is trying to make it easier for data teams to process large amounts of information from across their companies with a new cloud data warehouse service that the company announced today.
The Unified Data Platform is designed to provide a single source for companies to perform data processing, analytics, and visualization, which is important for generating insights from the information that’s tied up in business systems.
It’s supposed to solve a key problem: While companies have plenty of data about how their business is doing, it can be hard for analysts to reason over all of it, owing to a series of technical silos that makes collating and processing all that information difficult. Periscope Data’s new product helps fix that by bringing all of a company’s data into Amazon Web Services’ Redshift database.
Once the data is loaded in, teams can query the information using SQL, R, and Python. Periscope Data’s software is also able to provide visualizations in the form of both reports and dashboards. According to Periscope Data CEO Harry Glaser, this whole system is supposed to replace the existing approach to building data warehousing and analytics capabilities, which often requires chaining together multiple software packages.
“Generally speaking, if you’re a data team and you’re getting up and running, what you will do is assemble a platform out of various siloed products — some of them B2B products, some of them open source or consumer products — and then stitch them together with spit and duct tape,” he said in an interview with VentureBeat.
That causes a problem, though, since companies will then need to pay engineers to maintain that platform in order to keep their entire data processing regime working. Glaser said that the Unified Data Platform is designed to fix that.
In addition, having one unified platform means that it’s possible to see how changes to data affect an entire system, so companies can see what reports would be affected when a particular information source is shut off, for example.
Customers will get billed for the Unified Data Platform based on how many people use the software, as well as how much data they have stored within the data warehouse. When all is said and done, it will end up costing customers tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, according to Glaser.
Glaser said that he could see a future in which customers would be able to select from different cloud platforms and different database engines in order to match the performance characteristics that they want. But that’s still a ways off. Right now, Periscope Data is quite happy working with Amazon, which was a partner for this launch.
What’s not on the table is an on-premises version of the Unified Data Platform. Glaser said that the company is remaining focused on serving only customers who want to have their information in the public cloud, since that’s where the market is headed, in his view.

The Monster Hunter series is bigger in Japan than many of the foes you’ll face in the game with its most recent release, Monster Hunter X, selling 3.2 million copies in roughly its first month. The series has not been nearly as popular here in the States, however that could change early next year when Monster Hunter: World drops worldwide, all at the same time.
The franchise has long focused on single-player questing, though there was the option to play along with up to three other hunters in order to take down larger prey. And, according to Capcom, that co-op system is getting even better with a redesigned drop-in multiplayer system that will “cross-region cooperative play between Japan and the west” thereby dramatically expanding the pool of potential playing partners.
It’s also the first title in the series to launch within the same release window worldwide when it goes on sale for the PS4 and XBox One in early 2018. The PS4 version will also reportedly receive some exclusive content. Sorry PC gamers, you’ll still have to wait a bit as that platform won’t see the game until “a later date”.
Russian MPs have passed a bill ordering a unified list of all ex-officials who lost their posts because of corruption scandals.
The bill was prepared and drafted by the Russian Labor Ministry in early 2015, and received approval from the government in August of 2016. It was cleared by the Russian lower house in its third and final reading, and is expected to come into force from January 1, 2018.
Once this happens, Russian state agencies will have to create and maintain a nationwide list of officials convicted of corruption crimes or fired over “loss of trust” caused corruption scandals.
The main purpose of the move is to make it more difficult for those tarnished by corruption to receive a new job in a state agency or state-owned corporation.
The new rules would apply to civil servants at the federal and municipal levels, military personnel, law enforcement agents, state corporations, and other state organizations, such as the Central Bank.
The existing Russian Law on State Service allows the dismissal of officials who make decisions about funds and budgets when they are involved in corruption or fail to properly deal with conflicts of interest, leading to a “loss of trust.”
However, the sponsors of the bill explained that a unified list is necessary because officials fired “because of loss of trust” might not disclose the real reason for their sacking when looking for another job.
The current practice of registering the employment history in a ‘labor book’ – a paper document that is physically carried by an employee from one employer to another – also allows for various violations.
A unified nationwide register of those fired because of corruption would allow managers in government agencies and corporations to reject such candidates, should they attempt to re-enter the civil service.
An explanatory note attached to the bill states that between 2012 and 2015, about 1,200 people lost their jobs in Russia for violating anti-corruption rules or restrictions. A typical example of such a development was the 2016 sacking of former Kirov Region Governor Nikita Belykh who was caught red-handed accepting a bribe from a local businessman.

Enterprise-focused cloud communications company Fuze has announced a whopping $ 104 million funding round led by Wellington Management Company, with participation from Greenspring Associates, Summit Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners (BVP), and G20.
Founded out of Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2006, Fuze serves up a combination of video conferencing, SMS, instant messaging, and voice calls under a single cloud-based platform, and includes other tools such as analytics and caller ID. The company’s smarts can also be woven into third-party software including Salesforce, Zendesk, and Gmail.
Fuze was originally called ThinkingPhones, but it rebranded last year and took the name of the video-conferencing company it had acquired back in 2015. Alongside its name change, it also announced a chunky $ 112 million funding round. The company has now raised a total of $ 304 million since its inception, and the fresh cash influx will be used to continue its global expansion and to “fund product innovation,” according to a company statement.
The company says that it grew sales by 90 percent In 2016, with 36 percent of its business coming from outside of North America. “This latest round of investment advances Fuze’s aggressive pursuit of the market for our cloud-based business communications platform, accelerates geographic expansion to service our large global customers, and fuels product innovation in ways that align with our long-term growth strategy,” said Fuze founder and CEO Steve Kokinos.
Fuze is now more than 10 years old and has raised north of $ 300 million — so it is surely a likely contender to go public in the not-too-distant future. Fuze has been an IPO candidate for some time already, though it has yet to commit to an exact path. In an interview with the Boston Business Journal, Kokinos said that the latest round “fully funds us to profitability and / or IPO, whichever comes first,” noting that 2018 would be the key year for something to happen.
