In an attempt to salvage the cornerstone treaty limiting the deployment of short- and intermediate-range nuclear missiles, which the US has decided to unilaterally suspend, Moscow has introduced a draft resolution to the UNGA.

The US decision to leave the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty could seriously undermine international non-proliferation as well as arms control mechanisms, and would jeopardize world security, the Russian delegation said, presenting the draft to the United Nations General Assembly.

The resolution urges the parties to engage in consultations on strategic issues and key points of concern, in the hope that constructive dialogue will not only lead to compliance with the treaty but pave the way for further efforts in global arms reduction. Washington has accused Russia of being in breach of the treaty and said it will unilaterally pull out in two months unless Moscow provides convincing evidence that it is compliant. While the US accuses Russia of building banned missiles, Moscow denies the claims and in turn says American missile defense systems in Europe, presumably designed to counter Iran and North Korea, could be used offensively against Russia. Moscow is also concerned about American heavy combat drones, which can perform the functions of ground-launched cruise missiles, in violation of the treaty.

Russia has vowed to observe the INF treaty as long as the US does, and is trying to foster a dialogue to maintain the agreement. Signed between the US and the USSR more than 30 years ago, the non-proliferation treaty eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometers. The document, however, did not cover air- and sea-based missiles, nor did it involve any other parties, some of which have since developed their own versions of such weapons.

The US-propelled draft resolution targeting Palestinian Hamas has failed to pass a two-thirds majority threshold at the UN General Assembly vote in what is seen is a major upset for the outgoing US envoy to the UN Nikki Hailey.

The resolution garnered 87 votes in favor and 57 against, thus falling short of securing a required two-thirds majority for the motion to pass. Thirty-six member-states abstained from the vote.

The resolution should have condemned Hamas, which has been in control of the Gaza Strip from 2007 to 2014 and again since 2016. The document was in the works for several days, as Haley was seeking to reconcile the text with the EU and major Arab nations, the US allies.

The final draft denounces Hamas “for repeatedly firing rockets into Israel and for inciting violence, thereby putting civilians at risk,” demands it and other militant groups, such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad “cease all provocative actions and violent activity,” including “airborne incendiary devices.”

The document also includes a call for intra-Palestinian reconciliation and the return of the control over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Administration, reportedly included at the insistence of the US’s European allies.

World leaders laughed at US President Donald Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly because they respect him and appreciate his honesty, US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley argued. Trump’s critics were not convinced.

Appearing Wednesday morning on Fox & Friends, Haley argued that Trump is “very good at knowing his audience” and speaking directly to them.

“I deal with these leaders every single day, I know exactly how they think. Do they love America? No. Do they respect America? Now they do. When he said that, they love how honest he is, and it’s not diplomatic, and they find it funny,” she said.

Haley accused the media of spinning the moment to make it “something disrespectful” of Trump, while in actuality the world leaders fawned over the US leader.

“All day yesterday, they were falling over themselves to get a picture with him, to talk about how great his speech was, how strong it was,” she said. “They love that he’s honest with them and they’ve never seen anything like it, so there’s a respect there.”

The anti-Trump #Resistance on Twitter was not convinced.

“That is not what diplomats told me,” a CBS reporter quipped.

The article she linked did not illuminate that. Instead, it says unnamed diplomats at the UN said that “they have learned that meeting with Mr. Trump one on one is more useful than listening to his speech and immediately issuing an emotional reaction.” Such as laughing, presumably.

Trump himself was of two minds about the incident. “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK,” he said smiling as the UN audience reacted to his claim about his administration’s accomplishments.

Afterward, however, he played it as if he intended to get some laughs all along. “That was meant to get some laughter. It was great,” he said.

Iran’s foreign minister said he will not meet US officials at the UN General Assembly because they “lack honesty.” The two nations are in a diplomatic row following the US’ withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and new sanctions.

“No, no such meeting is planned,” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told Tasnim News Agency on Saturday, when asked whether talks are planned with his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo or other US officials on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September.

“About the recent offer by Trump, our official position has been announced both by the president [Rouhani] and myself. The Americans lack honesty,” Zarif was quoted as saying by Tasnim.

US President Donald Trump had earlier expressed his willingness to meet with Iranian leaders without preconditions. The idea was quickly dismissed by Tehran, citing “bad experiences” in negotiating with the US in the past and saying that Trump should first “make up” for his withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran’s nuclear program in May.

The US imposed economic sanctions on Iran last week, with President Trump promising more to come in November. “Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!” he tweeted.

Zarif pushed back by tweeting that international relations are “not a beauty pageant with tired clichés about world peace,” and called Trump “a warmonger.”

US officials previously stated that the sanctions are, among other things, targeted to eliminate Iran’s revenue from oil exports – something Iran has said is impossible to achieve. Officials in Tehran have repeatedly warned that the nation will enact retaliatory measures against any foreign restrictions.

The US is ready to “take names” of its critics, America’s ambassador to the UN has warned, ahead of a GA session to debate Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and move its embassy there.

The US is ratcheting up its rhetoric and its threats in defending the December 6 decision to move its Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem from global indignation. Even staunch American allies, including the UK and France, have condemned the new American approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which, for five decades, has focused on a potential two-state solution with Jerusalem as a shared capital.

On Monday, the US used its veto power to block a United Nations Security Council resolution that called on all states to refrain from establishing diplomatic missions in Jerusalem. The resolution, which had 14 votes in favor, also sought to reaffirm that “Israel’s establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under international law.”

Following the vote, which is not the first time the US has used its veto power to torpedo a UN measure aimed at sanctioning Israel, America’s UN envoy Nikki Haley termed the united front against Washington an “insult” that “won’t be forgotten.”

On Tuesday, Palestine officially requested a rare special session of the UN General Assembly on the status of Jerusalem. Ahead of Thursday’s meeting, Haley again warned the US “will be taking names” of those who oppose US policy during the symbolic vote, as resolutions passed by the General Assembly are not legally binding, but can be considered morally compromising.

“At the UN we’re always asked to do more & give more,” Haley wrote on Twitter. “So, when we make a decision, at the will of the American ppl, abt where to locate OUR embassy, we don’t expect those we’ve helped to target us. On Thurs there’ll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names.”

Threats under the guise of diplomacy appears to be in line with the style of the US ambassador who was a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. In January, when she assumed her new UN role, she showed her hand, warning US allies that if they do not support Washington, there would be repercussions.

“Our goal with the administration is to show value at the UN and the way that we’ll show value is to show our strength, show our voice, have the backs of our allies and make sure that our allies have our back as well,” Haley said on January 27, as she arrived at UN headquarters to present her credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “For those that don’t have our back, we’re taking names, we will make points to respond to that accordingly.”
