  • Yellow vest protesters took to the streets across France on Saturday, in what quickly devolved into violent clashes with police.
  • The demonstrators began by protesting a planned fuel tax hike weeks ago, but participants have continued even after the French government canceled the increase.
  • The protesters continue to be outraged over French President Emmanuel Macron, economic inequality, and worsening living standards.

For the fourth weekend in a row, yellow vest protesters took to the streets across France to demonstrate against President Emmanuel Macron, high taxes, and economic inequality.

The weekly protests have steadily grown more violent, and French officials said by the end of Saturday, dozens were injured and hundreds arrested.

Thousands of police officers were deployed to control the riots, eventually firing tear gas and rubber bullets, and repelling demonstrators with water cannons.

Here’s how the clashes unfolded:

The so-called “Yellow Vest” movement was first sparked weeks ago, when protestors began demonstrating against a planned fuel tax increase.

Many of the demonstrators are working-class or impoverished residents of France.

In response to the growing outrage and violence, Macron eventually backed down and canceled the fuel tax increase on Wednesday.

Eleven people were killed and six others were injured when a gunman armed with an AR-15 and handguns stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

When police rushed the synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, they were met with gunfire.

The suspect, Robert Bowers, was eventually taken into custody and reportedly told one police officer: “All these Jews need to die.”

The shooting is believed to be the deadliest attack on Jewish people in US history, according to a statement the Anti-Defamation League.

Here’s how the shooting unfolded:

Saturday, October 27, 9:49 a.m.: An anti-Semitic comment was posted on a social media account for suspected gunman Robert Bowers.

Just before the attack on Saturday morning, a post was shared on social media connected to Robert Bowers.

Bowers, the suspected shooter, was reportedly a frequent poster on Gab, a relatively new social network that has attracted many far-right supporters.

“HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people,” Bowers wrote just before the shooting, according to an archive of his Gab posts. “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

9:54 a.m.: Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call about an active shooter.

The call into the Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center came just five minutes after Bowers’ social media post on Gab.

The police officers were told that one 911 caller had reported 20-30 shots heard from the lobby, according to radio traffic posted by Broadcastify.

Several other nearby officers said they were also responding, CNN reported.

One year after a white-supremacist rally turned violent, ultimately killing Heather Heyer, a Charlottesville local, people gathered to memorialize the one-year anniversary.

Last year, a gathering of white nationalists at the Unite the Right rally clashed with counter-protesters. This year, locals and demonstrators came together to honor Heyer, stand in solidarity against racism, and protest the way police and officials handled last year’s deadly events.

Here’s how Saturday unfolded:

Notably absent from the city was any sign of the white-supremacist organizations that drew thousands of counter-protestors last year.

Chris Jones/Business Insider

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in Charlottesville ahead of the one-year anniversary, anticipating a repeat of the violence between white supremacists from the Unite the Right rally and counter-protestors, some of whom were members of the left-wing group Antifa.

Some local residents remarked that the heavy police presence this year was too little too late.

On Friday morning, a gunman armed with two guns opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas. At least 10 people were killed and another 10 were injured.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting “one of the most heinous attacks that we’ve ever seen in the history of Texas schools,” and described the suspect, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, as “evil.”

The Santa Fe High School shooting comes just months after another massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, in which 17 people were killed in Parkland, Florida. That shooting, as have many others, reignited a nationwide discussion over gun rights and gun control.

Here’s a timeline of how the attack in Santa Fe, Texas, unfolded on Friday:

How Trump’s wild 8-day feud involving Gold Star families and a Florida congresswoman unfolded https://briefnews.eu/how-trumps-wild-8-day-feud-involving-gold-star-families-and-a-florida-congresswoman-unfolded/ https://briefnews.eu/how-trumps-wild-8-day-feud-involving-gold-star-families-and-a-florida-congresswoman-unfolded/#respond Mon, 23 Oct 2017 23:04:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-trumps-wild-8-day-feud-involving-gold-star-families-and-a-florida-congresswoman-unfolded/ Donald TrumpShawn Thew-Pool/Getty Images

It’s been a wild eight days as President Donald Trump has feuded with a Florida congresswoman and a Gold Star family.

And the controversy, which has yet to dwindle, began when Trump was asked a week ago why he hadn’t mentioned anything about an early-October ambush in Niger that led to the deaths of four US servicemembers.

From that question stemmed days of back-and-forth between Trump, his chief of staff John Kelly, aides of past presidents, a member of Congress, former members of the military, and Gold Star families. The controversy has continued almost uninterrupted for more than a full week.

Here’s how the whole ordeal unfolded:

Monday, October 16

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

During a joint press conference alongside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell last Monday, Trump was asked about why he had not addressed the ambush in Niger.

Responding to that question, Trump said he had written letters and would call the families of the four fallen US soldiers.

But then he added the false claim that former President Barack Obama and other past presidents “didn’t make calls.”

“I call when it’s appropriate,” he said.

Trump backed off the claim slightly when pressed by another reporter at the same press conference. Soon after, former aides to Obama and other past presidents pushed back on the claim that they did not make calls to soldiers killed in action.

The criticism quickly grew, leading to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders telling reporters that Trump “wasn’t criticizing predecessors, but stating a fact.”

“When American heroes make the ultimate sacrifice, presidents pay their respects,” Sanders said. “Sometimes they call, sometimes they send a letter, other times they have the opportunity to meet family members in person. This president, like his predecessors, has done each of these. Individuals claiming former presidents, such as their bosses, called each family of the fallen, are mistaken.”

Tuesday, October 17

The controversy remained when Trump did a round of interviews on conservative talk radio Tuesday morning.

It was during that round of interviews that Trump said he contacted the families of “virtually everybody” killed in the line of duty and doubled-down on his claims about his predecessors, specifically Obama.

“You can ask General Kelly. Did he get a call from Obama?” Trump told Fox News Radio host Brian Kilmeade during an interview. Kelly’s son was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

“I don’t know what Obama’s policy was,” Trump told Kilmeade. “I write letters, and I also call.”

Later that night, Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson told Miami news station WPLG that while speaking with Myeshia Johnson, the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the troops killed in Niger, Trump said, “He knew what he signed up for, but when it happens, it hurts anyway.”

“Yeah, he said that,” Wilson said. “So insensitive. He should not have said that — he shouldn’t have said it.”

Wilson, who mentored the fallen soldier when he was younger, later told CNN’s Don Lemon she was riding in a car with the servicemember’s family on their way to receive his body when Trump called. She said the phone was on speaker.

Wednesday, October 18

Jonathan Ernst/Reuters

Trump responded to Wilson on Wednesday, and the back-and-forth between them has continued since.

Wilson began Wednesday by telling MSNBC that Myeshia was “crying the whole time” and that when she hung up the phone, she looked at the congresswoman and said, “He didn’t even remember his name,” referring to her late husband.

“It was horrible. It was insensitive. It was absolutely crazy, unnecessary. I was livid,” Wilson said.

Trump fired back at Wilson on Twitter, claiming she “totally fabricated” her account of his phone conversation with Myeshia.

“Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!” Trump tweeted, though he did not elaborate.

But the fallen soldier’s mother said Wilson’s account was accurate in an interview with The Washington Post.

“President Trump did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband,” Cowanda Jones-Johnson told The Post. Though she declined to elaborate, she said “yes” when asked whether Wilson’s account was true, The Post reported.

Speaking to the press during a White House meeting with the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday, Trump again pushed back on Wilson’s account of what he said.

“Didn’t say it at all,” he said. “She knows it. And she now is not saying it. I did not say what she said and I’d like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said. I had a very nice conversation with the woman, with the wife, who sounded like a lovely woman.”

Responding to Trump’s claim that she “totally fabricated” her account of the conversation, Wilson called him “a sick man.”

“He’s cold-hearted and he feels no pity or sympathy for anyone,” she told CNN.

Soon after that, media outlets began reporting on Trump’s contacts with other Gold Star families.

In a Post story, one Gold Star father said Trump offered him $ 25,000 after his son was killed. But the president hadn’t followed through when The Post contacted the father for its story.

Chris Baldridge, whose son, Army Sgt. Dillon Baldridge, was killed in June in Afghanistan, told The Post that Trump offered to write Baldridge a personal check for $ 25,000 and said he would work to establish an online fundraiser for the family.

“I could not believe he was saying that, and I wish I had it recorded because the man did say this,” Baldridge said. “He said, ‘No other president has ever done something like this,’ but he said, ‘I’m going to do it.'”

In a statement following The Post story, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told the publication that the check had been sent.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for a van attack in Spain’s historic Las Ramblas district in Barcelona, where at least 13 people were killed and some 100 were injured.

The square had been buzzing with tourists and residents when a white van jumped the curb and plowed into pedestrians on Thursday.

First-responders flooded the scene, cordoning off the street and tending to the injured. Two suspects are reportedly in custody, not including the driver of the van who was still at large early Friday morning.

Here’s how the day’s tragic events unfolded in Barcelona:

An hour-by-hour look at how Turkey’s attempted coup unfolded one year ago https://briefnews.eu/an-hour-by-hour-look-at-how-turkeys-attempted-coup-unfolded-one-year-ago/ https://briefnews.eu/an-hour-by-hour-look-at-how-turkeys-attempted-coup-unfolded-one-year-ago/#respond Fri, 14 Jul 2017 18:57:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/an-hour-by-hour-look-at-how-turkeys-attempted-coup-unfolded-one-year-ago/ turkey coupReuters/Huseyin Aldemir

ISTANBUL (AP) — A year ago Saturday, a group of Turkish soldiers using tanks, warplanes and helicopters launched a plot to overthrow Turkey’s president and government. The coup attempt failed, but the fallout continues a year later.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan swiftly blamed his one-time ally, U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is in exile in the U.S. and denies the allegations that he was behind the coup. The two had a public falling out in 2013, when Gulen’s organization was declared a terror organization and a clampdown began.

On the night the coup event unfolded, the events made little sense to those watching and the culprit was far from clear. People turned to the news to make sense of what was happening. Many lined up at stores and ATMs, unsure if the country would function the next day. Istanbul and Ankara residents took cover in their homes as they heard the unusual sound of sonic booms from fighter jets.

Heeding a call from the president, thousands of people took to the streets to stand up to the coup plotters. Some 250 people were killed and 2,193 injured. At least 34 coup plotters also died.

Based on reporting from that night, along with information from the state-run Anadolu news agency and the Turkish president’s office, here is an account of how the July 15-16 coup unfolded (all times local):

July 15

10 p.m.

A group of soldiers closes off two Istanbul bridges that connect the part of Turkey that’s in Asia to the part that’s in Europe, leading to a Friday night traffic jam and prompting social media speculation about a potential terror attack. Military jets are heard flying over the capital Ankara and shots are fired at army headquarters.

11:05 p.m.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says in a live televised statement that a group within Turkey’s military is attempting a coup.

July 16

12:13 a.m.

Soldiers aligned with the coup attempt take over the state broadcaster TRT, where anchorwoman Tijen Karas is forced to read a statement announcing the military has seized power from a government “that lost its legitimacy.” The statement cites autocratic rule and increased terrorism. It imposes martial law and curfews.

12:26 a.m.

Holding a microphone to her smartphone, Hande Firat, an anchorwoman for private broadcaster CNN Turk, uses FaceTime to interview Erdogan live on air . He says a minority within the military has attempted a coup outside the chain of command. He says they were incited by Gulen’s “parallel state,” a reference to an alleged infiltration of state institutions by the cleric’s followers. Erdogan calls people to assemble in the country’s squares and airports, then connects to other channels using FaceTime to repeat his call to resist the coup.

12:30 a.m.

People begin flowing into the streets across the country to oppose the coup attempt. The Directorate of Religious Affairs instructs mosques to recite a verse, usually read before Friday prayers, to alert and invite Muslims to the streets. Municipal buses and waste haulers barricade army barracks.

1:01 a.m.

Fighter jets and helicopters hit Ankara police headquarters six times, followed by strikes on a police special operations unit and a branch of Turkey’s satellite operator TURKSAT.

2:32 a.m.

F-16 fighter jets piloted by coup plotters bomb Turkey’s parliament 11 times, forcing members of parliament who convened for an emergency session to seek shelter in the basement.

3:20 a.m.

President Erdogan lands in Istanbul hours after departing a summer resort in Marmaris where he narrowly escaped capture and possibly an assassination attempt. He is welcomed by thousands of supporters. Earlier, all airports had been closed to aviation traffic and Istanbul’s main airport seized by soldiers and tanks.

4 a.m.

An official investigation is launched and detention warrants issued against alleged coup plotters linked to Gulen’s network, including members of the judiciary and the military. Suspensions from public service and detentions are already under way.

Turkey CoupDefne Karadeniz/Getty Images

4:42 a.m.

A helicopter bombs the Marmaris hotel where Erdogan had been vacationing and nearly 30 soldiers and commando squads raid the hotel, killing two police officers. Erdogan had already left.

6:30 a.m.

More than 130 soldiers who occupied the Bosporus Bridge, now called July 15 Martyrs’ Bridge, surrender to police and civilians resisting the coup attempt. Thirty civilians were killed there.

6:43 a.m.

Bombs are dropped around the Presidential Complex in Ankara by the coup plotters.

8:32 a.m.

Chief of Staff Hulusi Akar arrives at the Prime Ministry after being rescued. Akar was taken hostage at the outset of the coup attempt.

5 p.m.

Prime Minister Yildirim speaks in an extraordinary parliamentary session, saying Turkish citizens defeated the coup attempt and protected democracy. All four political parties represented in parliament issue a joint statement against the coup.

8:02 p.m.

The government declares the coup attempt “decisively” put down. Millions gather across the country for a “democracy vigil” that goes on every night for nearly a month.

Turkey CoupChris McGrath/Getty Images

Postcript

Days after the coup attempt, an emboldened Erdogan declares a state of emergency that remains in place to this day. It has allowed the government to rule by decrees, bypassing parliamentary checks and balances, to bring down Gulen’s network and other terror groups. Critics have called it a “civilian coup,” institutionalizing a clampdown that was already underway.

More than 50,000 people, including a dozen opposition parliamentarians and around 160 journalists, have been arrested. Some 100,000 public employees have been fired for suspected links to terror, among them academics, teachers, police and military officers. Judicial and administrative paths for the jailed and purged to defend themselves have been severely curtailed.

To Erdogan’s chagrin, the U.S. has not extradited Gulen and some NATO allies have granted asylum to alleged coup plotters. International criticism of the post-coup crackdown is rampant and Erdogan, more isolated than ever, has further polarized the country.

Witnesses described in detail how the deadly tragedy unfolded in the streets of the British capital.

Eyewitnesses said that the three assailants were driving over London Bridge in a nondescript Hertz rental van, when they accelerated to “about 50mph,” according to Holly Jones, a BBC journalist, caught in the attack.

“We thought it was a car accident but as we got closer we could see a lot of blood and bodies. There was a pregnant woman on the right who was severely injured and on the left there was a man being resuscitated, but he started breathing. We don’t know whether the woman survived,” one witness told the Guardian.

One more witness identified as Eric Siguenza told the BBC that three men “jumped out of the van and that’s when they started attacking people on the road.”

“As they headed down the stairs, as they were running towards the people, they were shouting, ‘This is for Allah,’” he said.

They were just yards from Borough Market, a popular nightspot. It was just after 10pm, minutes after the Champions League Final wrapped up in Cardiff, and the streets were full of revelers.

The violence occurred in full view of hundreds of onlookers.

“I saw a man in red with quite a large blade, I don’t know the measurement, I guess maybe 10 inches. He was stabbing a man… he stabbed him about three times fairly calmly,” an eyewitness, who identified himself as Ben, told The Telegraph.“It looked like the man had maybe been trying to intervene but there wasn’t much that he could do, he was being stabbed quite coldly and he slumped to the ground.”

“They stabbed this girl maybe 10 times, 15 times. She was going, ‘Help me, help me,’” an eyewitness named Gerard told the BBC, saying that he lobbed a bottle at the assailants to try to scare them off.

Many sought refuge in the cafes in the market square. But safety was temporary, as the attackers went inside the cafes, stabbing indiscriminately.

“He stabbed her in the neck,” eyewitness Elsbeth Smedley told CNN, recounting an attack on a waitress. “He stabbed another man in the back, and then he ran out of the restaurant.”

Police said that they received the first call about the attack at 10:08pm. An armed unit was dispatched immediately. Eyewitnesses described a cacophony of gunfire. Within eight minutes, the three stabbers were dead. The canisters the terrorists had strapped to their bodies were crude fakes.

The manager of a pub in the vicinity of the attack told RT that armed police stormed into the building and “basically asked us to leave.” A woman in the pub said the experience was “terrifying,” and that she could see a person lying on the ground from the window.

Another witness, a young man, told RT that he was on the bridge at the time the carnage took place, and saw a man being arrested by police just next to him. He was, however, unable to describe the man, as his face was covered with a hood.

“I did not really see. I tried to snap it but I just had been told to run,” he said.

Shortly after the attack, police issued a ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ warning for civilians, designed as a response to mass attacks in public places.

The local underground station was shut, hospitals were placed on shutdown, and the entire district cordoned off. People were forced to walk with hands on their heads, police stopped and searched suspicious groups, and tourists wandered around, unable to return to their hotels.
