The maelstrom surrounding his gun tattoo was already swirling around him when it emerged he had turned up late for World Cup duty in the first place, prompting an apology to the entire squad. Then after Gareth Southgate had told his players not to risk diving on Saturday morning with VAR in operation at the World Cup, he was booked for simulation for going to ground to try to win a penalty against Nigeria at Wembley that afternoon. But speaking at a meet-the-press event at St George’s Park yesterday aimed at breaking down barriers between the media and the squad, Sterling said it was all water off a duck’s back. “Me and my mum and my agent sometimes talk,” Sterling said. “Little things like what happened the other day, people expect me to be really affected by it. “But I just find I’ve been through harder stuff in my life so to get down by that… it’s the least of my worries. “I’ve got a massive opportunity here with a great bunch of players to represent England at a World Cup – That’s my biggest focus now. “The tattoo thing goes by, it’s going to be spoken for one day, two days. “If something bad or something negative happens, the majority of the time I have a think, think about what’s beensaid and at the end of it, respect it and go ahead and that’s it.” “It’s just another thing to let go past in the two-day span and get on with football. “That’s the most important thing for me.” That said, he is appreciative of the support that has been shown to him by the England manager and the rest of the squad. “From the minute Gareth Southgate came in he said the only thing we could control was what happened in our circle and on the training ground,” he added. “In the past I think we’ve paid a bit too much attention to the outside and the way he’s brought the squad together as a unit and tried to limit what we do and talk about has been on a positive note. “It lets people know we’ve got each other’s back. “Especially with the stuff that has gone on in the past week. The boys have seen me round the place and, quite frankly, know that haven’t been really bothered by it. “It’s one of those things. They get reported and that’s it. “But they see me in the camp and know I’m fine. The Siberian outpost of Oymyakon is officially the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth – yet residents incredibly go about their day-to-day routines despite bone-chilling temperatures of -62C (-80F). In fact, it’s quite possible that it’s even colder than -62C, given that the Siberian Times reports the town’s digital thermometer stopped working when it reached that mark – because of the chilling cold. While it might provide an interesting photo op for tourists, natives of Russia’s Yakutia Republic take it in their stride. The biting temperature is not an excuse to stay indoors, even for the youngest residents of the coldest place on Earth. “Our country holidays,” wrote one woman, who added a photo of her son in the snowy countryside. Local schoolchildren were finally allowed to skip classes after temperatures in the village dropped below -53C – the threshold after which schools must close. Yet when temperatures fell to -50C in November, the kids attended classes as normal. That qualifies as a no-excuses environment. Meanwhile, Nastya, 24, got widespread traction on Instagram after adding a photo of herself with eyelashes turned white like icicles. “Minus 47C, 15-20 minutes’ walk and you get natural mascara on your eyelashes,” she says. A video showing a smiling nine-year-old boy brushing snow off the back of a horse as it stands in a snow-covered paddock typifies the fortitude of residents. “For us these temperatures are a common thing. It’s strange that journalists call and ask how we live there. I say: you come and see for yourself. We live an ordinary life,” says Semyon Vinokurov, who shot the video. To give tourists some credit, these Chinese ‘ice’ visitors showed an impressive willingness to brave the freezing temperatures as they stripped and danced before taking a swim in the local springs. In 1933, when temperatures dipped to -68C, the town earned a place in the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ as the coldest permanently-inhabited place on Earth. Only Antarctica gets colder. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg has promised to beat SpaceX in the race to Mars, prompting a threatening, but concise, response from his counterpart, Elon Musk. Muilenburg made the bold claim – that he believed the first people to set foot on Mars will do so from a Boeing rocket – during an interview on CNBC Thursday. READ MORE: Space oddity: Tesla car heading for Mars onboard first Falcon Heavy Rocket When asked whether he or Musk will get there first, Muilenberg responded: “Eventually we’re going to go to Mars and I firmly believe the first person that sets foot on Mars will get there on a Boeing rocket,” he said. Musk responded to the claim via Twitter simply writing: “Do it.” The race for Mars has many players, including NASA and Blue Origin to name a few, however Musk has maintained that he intends to reach his goal before anyone else, boldly promising to begin his Red Planet mission by the year 2022. Muilenburg says Boeing intends on taking their next generation rocket, called ‘Space Launch System’ with NASA for its first test flight in 2019. READ MORE: This Soviet pod was first man-made object to land on Mars (PHOTO) “This is a rocket that’s about 36 stories tall, we’re in the final assembly right now, down near New Orleans. And we’re going to take a first test flight in 2019 and we’re going to do a slingshot mission around the moon,” Muilenburg said to Bloomberg. If we’re going by the pair’s current projections, Musk could ambitiously get boots on Mars some 10 years before Muilenberg. Musk said he intends on building a city on the planet because he “can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.” Investors shrugged off any concern about Tesla over-stretching its production and financial resources with the unveiling of futuristic semi-trucks and a pricey sports car, pushing its stock price up almost 4 percent on Friday. Chief Executive Elon Musk shocked industry-watchers by launching a $ 200,000 sports car on Thursday, along with two electric trucks, possibly adding more logistical nightmares even as it wrestles with production issues related to its Model 3 sedan. “In essence, all last night’s event did was add to Elon Musk’s shopping list of things he needs to spend money on at a time when the company is having difficulty making its base vehicle (Model 3),” said Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne. The company this month pushed back its target for volume production on the Model 3 by about three months to fix production bottlenecks. Osborne said the company’s cumulative capex announcements now exceed $ 15 billion to $ 20 billion over the next few years. Some analysts fear the trucks will be an expensive distraction for Tesla, which is burning cash, has never posted an annual profit, and is in self-described “manufacturing hell” related to the $ 35,000 Model 3 sedan. Tesla’s ambitious plans would need a steady flow of cash, analysts said. Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois estimated that Tesla would need to raise $ 2.5 billion to $ 3 billion to keep production running smoothly. “Longer term, we continue to think the capital intensity of the business model will keep returns below best-in-class auto OEMs,” Houchois said in a research note. Tesla spent $ 1.1 billion on its auto business in the third quarter and expects expenses of $ 1 billion in the current one. The company had about $ 3.5 billion in cash and cash equivalents for the period ended Sept. 30. The company raised $ 1.8 billion by selling debt in August. Although Tesla has made inroads among luxury car buyers with its Model S sedan and Model X SUV, it is the Model 3 on which the company’s long-term success rests. The Model 3 sedan is expected to go into production in 2018, electric trucks in 2019. Production for the new Roadster sports car, a likely Ferrari rival, will start in 2020. The first 1,000 Roadsters will cost $ 250,000 each, paid in full upfront, with later models starting at $ 200,000. Houchois called the plan interesting, noting that it would help Tesla raise $ 250 million plus the $ 50,000 deposits on reservations. But the plan to make the trucks is likely to open up new growth areas for Tesla as the global race heats up to overcome the challenges of substituting batteries for diesel engines. The company faces competition from the likes of Daimler AG, Navistar International Corp and Volkswagen AG, as well as a host of startups. Reporting by Supantha Mukherjee Related Video:

Western energy sanctions vis-à-vis Russia have become a steady phenomenon of the global oil and gas market.
Most Russian oil companies don’t expect sanctions to be scrapped anytime soon—an assessment espoused by the political elites of the country, too. The sides even seem to have resigned their minds to the current frosty relations.
The Russian economy has swung back to growth this year, with an anticipated 1.7 percent GDP increase this year, and the ruble solidified following a disastrous 2015-2016 period.
Russian oil companies have mostly overcome the lending obstructions U.S. sanctions present by finding new partners in Asia and taking use of their free cash flow, and were it not for the OPEC+ agreement, they would ramp up production even more swiftly than the 4-5 percent since the sanctions regime kicked in. As a consequence, the current consolidation will soon move to a new phase: testing the sanctions unity of the United States and European Union.
The Black Sea isn’t particularly famous for its oil production. Romania is virtually the only country with stable output from offshore fields, with Bulgaria, Turkey and now Russian-controlled Crimea joining by means of new ventures. The relative insignificance of the Black Sea’s current oil output is mostly caused by the fact that, so far, oil companies have concentrated on shallow water, while most geologists contend that the sweetest spots will be found further, in deep water.

This is bound to change this December as Rosneft, joined by the Italian ENI, will attempt to start exploration drilling at the Shatsky Ridge (also known as the Western Chernomorsky block), one of the most promising blocks of the Russian Black Sea sector.
Notably, Directive 4 under EO 13662 stipulates that the provision of goods, services and technology to any deepwater, Arctic and shale project in Russian territory shall be prohibited.
The Shatsky Ridge, located at depths ranging from 1200m to 2200 m, indisputably qualifies for the “deepwater” category as both U.S. and EU sanctions deem anything developed at depths deeper than 150m a deepwater project.
The Shatsky Ridge was initially a YUKOS-led project and ended up within the Rosneft portfolio after the 2007 firesale of YUKOS assets. Its tumultuous history is also peculiar in that throughout the 21st century the project migrated from one Western major to another—first TotalFinaElf (now Total) tried to sign up onto it in 2002, then Chevron tried its luck in 2010, yet only ENI could clinch a final deal with Rosneft in 2012.
The date of the deal conclusion is crucial in this matter, as it will likely become the rock on which the sides will split, whereas the EU sanctions entail a “grandfather clause” for projects that started before 2014, the US sanctions know no such concession.
Thus, the Russo-Italian consortium will put the US sanctions to test. The issue has thus far elicited no reply from the American side, so it remains to be seen whether the U.S. administration would go so far as to discipline a European company abiding by European rules.
The Shatsky Ridge exploration drilling starts in December by the means of Scarabeo-9, a Chinese-built new-generation deepwater semi-submersible rig. The Saipem-owned rig in itself is a carefully elaborated pick, since it was initially built for a sanctions-hit country, Cuba, with the proportion of American components in it below 10 percent to circumvent U.S. sanctions regarding Havana. Rosneft experienced some delays with the upgrading of Scarabeo-9, as the rig had to be partially dismantled so that it could pass the Bosphorus Strait; however, these issues are now resolved.
The Shatsky Ridge was subjected to a thorough 2D and 3D survey in the past years (ENI retrospectively reimbursed Rosneft’s previous expenses on geological prospecting in accordance with its 33.33 percent share ratio) and is ready to be developed. The location couldn’t be better—the block is situated just several dozen miles away from Novorossiysk, Russia’s biggest export outlet for Mediterranean-bound cargoes.
The reserves of the Shatsky Ridge are still a matter of dispute. An early DeGolyer & MacNaughton D2 recoverable reserves estimate put them at 1.36 billion tons of oil (10 billion barrels). However, latest reports indicate a lower number, at approximately 0.7 billion tons of oil. This might be downgraded even further with the course of time. In many respects, Chevron’s reported discrepancies with Rosneft boiled down to their reserves forecast—which is significantly lower than Rosneft’s—and the U.S. company didn’t want to sign up to the hefty ($ 1 billion) prospecting expenses.

For ENI, the most appealing factor in developing the Shatsky Ridge is the proximity of a potentially resource-rich production area to the Mediterranean region (its core region), while Rosneft’s main manifest advantage is the future assimilation of deepwater drilling technologies and practices, to be used in the oil giant’s other projects elsewhere, if sanctions remain.
The Shatsky Ridge developments stand in stark contrast with other promising block in the Russian Black Sea sector—the Tuapse Trough (ExxonMobil suspended its participation in 2014 due to debilitating sanctions) and Yuzhno-Chernomorskiy (Rosneft was required to drill two exploration wells by 2022, postponed indeterminately).
The Tuapse Trough is estimated to be even more hydrocarbon-prolific than Shatsky Ridge (the latter’s DeGolyer & MacNaughton D2 estimates stand at 1.5 billion tons of oil). However, due to ExxonMobil’s participation it is likely to be given a much slower development. In 2016-2017, ExxonMobil sought a waiver from the U.S. Treasury for the Tuapse Trough, yet saw its claim rejected against the background of a salient Congress outcry. Representatives of ExxonMobil lamented that the decision puts them in a highly unfavorable position as European companies operate on a less confining playing field.
Although Rosneft remains sanctions-listed and CEO Igor Sechin is on the OFAC’s Specially Designated Nationals list, the company didn’t completely severe its links to Western majors. In some cases it managed to circumvent restrictions taking use of loopholes. For instance, it moved forward with Statoil (it, too, has a 33.3 percent share in their JV) on Domanik formations in Russia’s Volga-Urals region and expects to drill three exploration wells by late 2019.
Domanik reserves fall into the tight category, however, since they aren’t iin shale formations, they ought to be exempted from the sanctions regime. Yet all upcoming deepwater projects (including the 17 TCf and 1 Bbbl Pobeda field discovered in 2014) involving Western partners have been postponed or abandoned indefinitely, naturally, with the notable exception of the Shatsky Ridge.

A brief delay by the Chinese delegation left President Xi Jinping facing the entire Russian team solo, prompting President Vladimir Putin to jokingly call his Chinese counterpart “a lone warrior.”
The leaders of China and Russia had a face-to-face meeting on Thursday amid the ongoing meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana, Kazakhstan. The encounter was held on camera, but apparently some glitch in protocol resulted in a brief delay for the Chinese delegation, footage of the episode showed.
This left Xi sitting alone opposite Putin and seven members of his delegation. As seconds stretched, the Russian leader, who was not able to start his welcome speech in the absence of Xi’s entourage, defused the growing tension, remarking that his Chinese counterpart was a “lone warrior” at the table.
The Chinese officials then arrived and the meeting went on as planned, with Putin and Xi exchanging pleasantries and pledging to continue building stronger relations between the two nations.
Xi played host to Putin last month when Beijing held its high-profile ‘One Belt, One Road’ economic summit and they will meet again in early July, when the Chinese president is to visit Russia.

Footage of a failed robbery attempt at a Russian supermarket shows a cashier nonchalantly scanning groceries while being held at gunpoint, before the perpetrator leaves the store empty-handed like a guilty schoolboy.
In the CCTV video from a grocery store in Moscow Region, the female cashier is seen serving a customer when an unmasked man, wearing a black coat and a hat, enters the shop and heads directly to the cash register. He then produces a gun and points it right at the cashier’s head.
However, contrary to all expectations, no drama follows. Demonstrating tranquility worthy of a Buddhist monk, the woman continues to serve her customer, who also appears to be totally unmoved by the armed perpetrator.
The only person who seems concerned is a man who is seen entering the shop and retreating as soon as he notices the gun.
Help arrives in the form of a female store manager, who enters the frame in a business-like manner, takes the wannabe robber by the arm and sends him on his way without a fuss.
The whole scene takes less than one minute to unfold.
Although originally made public in February, the video has reemerged this week, generating nearly 700,000 views in a couple of days.

Police have since interviewed both the cashier and the perpetrator, broadcast by Russian 360 TV. The unlucky robber turned out to be a homeless man, who said he “went to the store to ask the cashier for 100 rubles” (less than $ 2), which he needed to buy alcohol for his girlfriend. To be more convincing, he used a gun, which turned out to be a toy pistol.
The cashier claimed that at the time, she did not know whether the gun was fake or real. Police also said the failed attacker had a criminal record, and had been convicted of robbery before.

To the side’s match-winner against France, it represents nothing more than white noise.
At 30, Te’o has been around the block enough times in his cross-code career not to go all knock-kneed at the prospect of his first game in the Principality Stadium.
Wales? He’s been there and done that – or at least New South Wales. The Worcester centre reckons the experience of playing for Queensland in rugby league’s most ferocious rivalry should prepare him for the reception which awaits England.
“I haven’t really chatted to anyone about it. I’ll find out for myself…if selected,” he said. “I can’t say it will really affect me much. I’ve played plenty of rival games and been to plenty of hostile environments.
“I’m not foreign to it. State of Origin is quite hostile. If you’re going down to Sydney to play the Blues in a decider it’s full-on. It’s rugby isn’t it? I’m going to go out on the field and play.” The Six Nations is rolling along just fine for him so far.
His record-breaking debut on Saturday at Twickenham which saw him score a try within two minutes of coming off the bench was the stuff of dreams, although not his.

Ben Te’o is relaxed about facing Wales in Cardiff
As a boy growing up in New Zealand, his aspirations never involved wearing the red rose. A wannabe All Black, he went on to represent Samoa at league.
England – where his mum was born – was still not on his union radar when he switched codes from South Sydney in 2014 and moved to Europe.
“When I came over I didn’t think along the lines of playing international rugby – I really only came to play rugby union. Two years of club rugby somewhere in Europe and then maybe head home – that was more what I was thinking,” said Te’o, who joined Leinster.
“I wanted some variety in my career. I had felt stale. I grew up playing rugby union and I had a lot of questions that I wanted to answer about union and whether I’d have been any good or not.”
It was only when his powerful midfield offloading game began to make inroads in his new code that he began to think on.
“I was playing in Ireland against a lot of these international guys and I was starting to feel that maybe I was on their level and could compete. It started popping into my head whether I could give international rugby a go,” he said.

Ben Te’o scored the decisive try as England saw off France
“I knew I had the passport and qualified for England and I really started focussing on that and giving it a go.”
Ireland and Australia were interested in exploiting the residency regulations to snap him up but it was Stuart Lancaster, ironically Leinster’s coach now, who persuaded the gun for hire he should leave for the Premiership to become eligible for England. The rest is Six Nations history.
“It was a nice moment to be a part of and something that I will remember in my career. My family stayed up very, very late in New Zealand to watch it. I know they were very proud,” he said.
“Something like that makes you feel good and confident, especially when you are really enjoying yourself in this team environment.”
As the only Worcester player in the England squad, Te’o flits around the group but he has found a soulmate in Jonny May.
“He is interesting character. Me and him have been watching a lot of documentaries on North Korea,” said Te’o.

England are aiming to retain the Six Nations title
“That’s what he’s quite interested in and we’ve had quite a few chats about how we can fix the situation there. There’s a lot that needs to be done.”
The pair have even discussed the unlikely – and potentially suicidal – possibility of a back-packing trip to the closed-off republic.
“That’s what he wants to do,” said Te’o. “He said ‘We need to go before things get really bad’. I said ‘I don’t know if it’s worth it, it’s quite dangerous’ but he said ‘I’m pretty keen on it’. Maybe we’ll be reporting to you live from North Korea in the summer.”
By then his hope is that he will have started a Test for his adopted country. After four replacement appearances, he is itching for a start but is likely to have to settle for another supersub assignment in Wales.
“You’ve got to just be patient,” he said. “I understand that strong teams are more like strong squads, and that you need depth and you need people to all pull in the right direction.
“It’s not about me trying to say ‘I want more minutes, I want to start’, it’s about doing what’s right for the team. The team’s going in a really good direction. It’s about contributing to that.”
