  • GOP governors have been sending migrants to eastern cities in protest of Biden's immigration policies. 
  • The lawmakers say Biden's administration isn't doing enough at the border. 
  • Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said it's unfair to say the Biden administration is "lax" on immigration.

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said President Joe Biden's administration is being "unfairly" viewed as "lax" on immigration. 

"This administration, I believe, unfairly, is perceived as lax on border enforcement. In fact, we are sending back over 100,000 people a month and have been for the last two years, over 2 million people. The lesson I learned managing this issue is you've got to repeat yourself maybe 25 times before anybody will listen to you," Johnson said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. 

The former Obama administration official said that despite criticism from GOP governors on Biden's immigration policies, his administration has been sending people back at the border and advised the current administration to "continually stress that we are, in fact, with the machinery of government about as fast as we probably can. "

Johnson added that border security is a lot tougher since he served as DHS Secretary eight years ago. 

"We were dealing principally with the Northern Triangle countries Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. This problem has become hemispheric. In addition to those countries, you now have Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela who are not cooperating with us," Johnson said, adding that while border patrol capabilities have expanded, they're still struggling. 

His remarks come as several GOP governors began sending migrants to northern US cities. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. In the past several weeks, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent around 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City. 

The moves were efforts to protest Biden's immigration policies. Johnson called the migrant relocation efforts a "political stunt."

"Well, there's a right way and a wrong way to do that, Margaret," Johnson said. "The wrong way is on 20 minutes notice to send people by bus or airplane to the Edgartown Airport or to mass [avenue] in front of the vice president's residence without giving local resources, NGOs, shelter's local government an opportunity to plan for how they intend to feed and clothe and house migrants."

He added: "What the governors of Florida and Texas are doing, frankly, is a political stunt and treating people like livestock."

Facebook removed a new Android app from the Google Play store on Friday, after critics say that it unfairly collected app usage data from users and sent it back to the social network.

Earlier in the day, Gizmodo itself had called the app ‘deceptive’, with some cybersecurity experts urging users not to install the app.

Netanyahu said the United Nations treats Israel unfairly and “absurdly denies” Jewish connections to Jerusalem which Israel claims as its capital, while the UN views East Jerusalem as Palestinian territory which Israel occupied illegally under international law.

Netanyahu’s other complaint to the UN was that it was not keeping Palestinian hate speech against Israel in check.

He also blamed the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, for being too soft on the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement which is seeking the destruction of the Jewish State, according to the Israeli prime minister.

UNIFIL has failed to report on the “tens of thousands of weapons smuggling into Lebanon for Hezbollah,” he said as cited by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Guterres promised Netanyahu “to do everything in my capacity” to make sure the peacekeepers fulfill their obligations in Lebanon.

“I understand the security concerns ofIsrael and I repeat that the idea or the intention or the will to destroy the state of Israel is something totally unacceptable from my perspective,” he said.

They also discussed a UN construction project in Jerusalem’s Armon Hanatziv neighborhood, which Israeli officials say is being carried out illegally and without a permit. Netanyahu told Guterres that the UN should abide by the rules of construction and Israeli laws, Arutz Sheva reported.

Netanyahu and Guterres agreed that Israel and the UN would attempt to negotiate a compromise solution that would be in line with Israeli law.

As for attempts to bring back Israel and Palestine to the negotiations table, Guterres asked Netanyahu to work towards improving the Palestinian economy so that the Palestinians could realize the benefits of peace.

Netanyahu accuses Iran of building missile sites in Syria, Lebanon

Netanyahu also told the visiting UN Secretary-General that Iran was constructing missile production sites in Syria and Lebanon.

Tehran is turning Syria “into a base of military entrenchment, and it wants to use Syria and Lebanon as warfronts against its declared goal to eradicate Israel,” he claims, as cited by Reuters.

“It is also building sites to produce precision-guided missiles towards that end, in both Syria and in Lebanon. This is something Israel cannot accept. This is something the UN should not accept,” the Israeli PM said.

Netanyahu provided no proof of his accusations against Tehran, but his statement comes a few weeks after Israel’s Channel 2 News showed images of what it called a construction site of an Iranian long-range missile production facility in northern Syria.

According to the broadcaster, the pictures were captured by an Israeli satellite not far from the Syrian Mediterranean coastal town of Baniyas.

Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, have been helping the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad in his battle against terrorists in the country. Last week, Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel was ready for one-sided actions should Iranian forces not withdraw from Syria.

“Israel opposes Iran’s continued entrenchment in Syria. We will be sure to defend ourselves with all means against this and any threat,” he said.

The Israeli PM has been also working hard to persuade the US that the main threat in Syria is not from not Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, but from Tel Aviv’s main geopolitical rival, Iran.

Guterres decries threats against Israel as “modern anti-Semitism”

Earlier on Monday, Guterres visited a Holocaust Museum and met with the Israeli president, Reuven Rivlin, saying that calls for the annihilation on the Jewish state were a “form of modern anti-Semitism.”

He didn’t back Rivlin’s claims of “the discrimination against Israel” in some UN affiliates.

“I sometimes disagree with [the] positions of the government of Israel,” Guterres said, emphasizing that as the UN General-Secretary, he’s committed to “treating all states equally.”

Guterres will hold talks with the Palestinian prime minister, Rami Hamdallah in the West Bank Tuesday and will then travel to Gaza Wednesday as part of his first trip to the region since taking office on January 1.

The Secretary-General will also meet the families of the two slain Israeli soldiers who had been held by Hamas since Operation Protective Edge in 2014.

Guterres isn’t expected to negotiate with any Hamas representatives, but Israeli sources told Haaretz he can influence the armed Palestinian group indirectly via Qatar and Egypt.

As the world’s fastest-growing investment product, exchange-traded funds are a lightning rod for both effusive praise and cutting criticism.

On one hand, they provide an easy, low-cost way for investors to get diversified exposure to a number of markets. On the other, they funnel traders into many of the same companies, leaving stocks not included in ETFs fighting for relevance.

This latter argument is the basis for one complaint about ETFs: that they’re homogenizing the market, and sapping it of price swings so crucial to generating returns for traders.

Goldman Sachs is calling BS.

They say that if passive funds were actually causing the ongoing low-volatility conundrum, correlations between stocks would be much higher. The logic goes that stocks bundled and traded together would move in tandem.

They’re not. In fact, realized correlation is currently sitting at its lowest level since the start of the eight-year bull market, according to data compiled by Goldman.

“Passive flows into broad indexes are not lifting all stocks in a uniform fashion,” a group of Goldman derivatives strategists led by John Marshall wrote in a client note. “Rather, the fact that correlations have been low in the S&P 500 — despite the strong inflows from passive — have been supportive of a low realized volatility environment at the index level.”

At present time, the low-volatility conundrum is among the hottest debates raging in global markets. In addition to active management being hamstrung by a lack of price swings, traders betting directly on volatility are having a tough time.

Many investors, thinking volatility has nowhere to go but up from historically low levels, have wasted money betting on price swings that haven’t materialized. Meanwhile, traders wagering on lower volatility have found their position increasingly crowded, which has spurred pain on the rare occasions the CBOE Volatility Index — or VIX — has spiked.

The VIX is currently sitting at 10.11, close to the lowest on record and almost 50% below its average since the start of the bull market.

Count Sanford C. Bernstein among the firms not particularly worried either way. They attribute low equity volatility to muted realized price swings, and urge investors to be wary of attributing the low VIX to complacency.

“Yes, we should expect volatility to rise, but as long as that happens in a controlled way in response to an evolution in the cycle,” a group of quantitative strategists at Sanford C. Bernstein wrote in a client note on Wednesday. “Then we see no reason why that, by itself, leads to a bearish implication for the market.”
