Artists, writers and other creatives also love to mingle at Narrow Marrow, a hip artsy café on Carnarvon Street. It was opened by yet another early Zapper, Alvin Neoh, a musician and interior designer, and his artist partner Jaime Oon.

As the name suggests, Narrow Marrow is a tunnel-like bar with high ceilings and bare walls, vintage chairs and a back area filled with art made from driftwood, books and DIY memorabilia. “Narrow Marrow is a collective of weirdos and non-conformists who can find comfort in each other’s company,” says Stephanie Kee, a lurker of George Town’s artsy underbelly, as she sips her Toddy Mojito, a rice wine-based Penang spin on the popular cocktail.

Meanwhile, Alvin makes sure the retro-pop, melodic punk, psychedelia and light trance crackling from his speakers doesn’t skip a beat. He doesn’t think Penang is the street art hub many visitors might think it is—not yet anyway—but he concedes there is a new guard of creatives, working away behind the scenes, to help establish a more tangible arts scene. “[Because of the famous murals], maybe people arrive in George Town expecting to find a thriving arts scene, which I don’t think really exists yet,” he says. “But I also don’t feel pressured into demonstrating the opposite: Outsiders keep coming, find us here at the bar, and we often click and make stuff happen”.

Easter Island statues could be lost to sea, warns UNESCO https://briefnews.eu/easter-island-statues-could-be-lost-to-sea-warns-unesco/ https://briefnews.eu/easter-island-statues-could-be-lost-to-sea-warns-unesco/#respond Sun, 18 Mar 2018 04:29:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/easter-island-statues-could-be-lost-to-sea-warns-unesco/

Easter Island, the remote volcanic island home of nearly 900 ancient monumental statues, is at risk of disappearing into the sea, according to the latest report from UNESCO.

The world heritage body blamed rising tides, which have been rapidly eroding the island’s coasts for years. However, the group is now warning that rising sea levels could completely destroy the island’s iconic ‘heads.’

“Some Easter Island statues are at risk of being lost to the sea because of coastal erosion,” said Adam Markham, deputy director of the Climate and Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists and lead author of the report.

Scientists predict oceans will rise by up to two meters by the year 2100, which they said will make “storms and waves become a greater threat” to coastal areas, according to the New York Times. Last year, a rock wall three meters from the south coast of the Polynesian island came crashing down due to the impact of strong waves.

Now, archaeologists will try to stall the coastal erosion by constructing a marine wall. The Japanese Government has even supplied a $ 400,000 subsidy to complete the work. Officials are also considering moving the massive statues and ceremonial platforms in an effort to preserve them.

Platforms containing ancient remains and giant moai statues, which represent the ancestors of the islanders, were abandoned about 2,000 years ago. Discovered by Polynesians 1,000 years ago, the island is now a Chilean territory despite being 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) off the country’s coast.

Aside from the loss of archeological heritage, the 6,000 residents on the island could be at risk of losing their livelihoods, as they rely almost entirely on tourists coming to visit the sites. Last year, more than 100,000 people came to visit, and the number is expected to grow to levels that exceed the island’s capacity, according to officials. Tourism generates about $ 70 million each year through hotels, restaurants and tour businesses.

Israel quits UNESCO over ‘attacks’ months after US withdrawal https://briefnews.eu/israel-quits-unesco-over-attacks-months-after-us-withdrawal/ https://briefnews.eu/israel-quits-unesco-over-attacks-months-after-us-withdrawal/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 07:18:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israel-quits-unesco-over-attacks-months-after-us-withdrawal/

Following in the footsteps of the US, Israel announced its exit from UNESCO, citing the it’s “attacks” on the Jewish state. The move comes after 128 UN members voted to reject the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The decision was based on the UN-run agency’s “attempts to disconnect Jewish history from the land of Israel,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said. He added that the official letter of withdrawal will be submitted by the end of the year and that Israel will effectively leave the organization by the end of 2018.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed Israel’s envoy to UNESCO, Carmel Shama-Hacohen, to officially announce the withdrawal, Haaretz reports.

In doing so, Tel Aviv joins Washington, which announced in October that it will leave UNESCO due to its “continuing anti-Israel bias” and “the need for fundamental reform in the organization.” According to Haaretz, Netanyahu made the decision after a series of discussions centered around Israel’s desire to not leave the US isolated in the move.

According to UNESCO regulations, a member state’s exit takes effect on December 31 of the year after the official letter of intent is submitted. Even though the US made its official announcement earlier in October, both countries will leave the agency at the same time.

Israel’s announcement comes after 128 UN member states voted on Thursday at the General Assembly to reject US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. Nine states voted against the resolution and 35 nations abstained.

Commenting on the vote, initiated by a number of Arab and Muslim countries, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he appreciated that “a growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd.” He also thanked Trump and US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley “for their stalwart defense of Israel and their stalwart defense of the truth.”

srael’s relationship with UNESCO has deteriorated since October 2016. Tel Aviv suspended ties with the organization after a draft resolution noted the importance of Jerusalem to three world religions – Christianity, Judaism, and Islam – but made no reference to why the city is significant to Christians or Jews.

“Just withdrawing, just leaving the field [of UNESCO] to others is not acceptable to many Israelis who also don’t think that the accent that some politicians put on the Jewish character of Israel is appropriate,” Amir Oren, an Israel-based columnist, told RT.

He said the decision to leave will hurt Israel’s cooperation in education, science and the arts, and possibly affect financial aid from UNESCO.

US to withdraw from UNESCO https://briefnews.eu/us-to-withdraw-from-unesco/ https://briefnews.eu/us-to-withdraw-from-unesco/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 13:26:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-to-withdraw-from-unesco/

The US State Department confirmed the country is officially withdrawing from UNESCO, the UN’s cultural body it helped found back in 1945. The move is to take effect on December 31, Washington announced.

“This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects US concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organization, and continuing anti-Israel bias at UNESCO,” the State Department said in a Thursday statement cited by Reuters.

The UNESCO chief has already confirmed receiving the respective notification.

Washington will remain in the organization “as a non-member observer state in order to contribute US views, perspectives and expertise,” the statement said.
There has been no immediate comment from the US government.

Earlier, Washington officials told AP that the United States is withdrawing from UNESCO after repeated criticism of resolutions that the Trump administration perceived as anti-Israeli.

Japanese island where women are BANNED and men must be NAKED wins top Unesco honour https://briefnews.eu/japanese-island-where-women-are-banned-and-men-must-be-naked-wins-top-unesco-honour/ https://briefnews.eu/japanese-island-where-women-are-banned-and-men-must-be-naked-wins-top-unesco-honour/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 12:55:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/japanese-island-where-women-are-banned-and-men-must-be-naked-wins-top-unesco-honour/

Okinoshima is a tiny island below South Korea, that belongs to the city of Munakata in Fukuoka, Japan.

The land mass is governed by a set of rules steeped in ancient tradition, including a ‘no women’ policy.

Okinoshima has just been declared a World Heritage site by the UN’s cultural body.

The Unesco honour included the island, three nearby reefs and four other related site.

Announced at the organisation’s annual summit in Krakow, Poland at the weekend, the World Heritage nod brings Japan’s total to 21.

The sacred island has long been the subject of intrigue thanks to its extremely unique features.

Okinoshima has a population of one: the lone employee to the shrine which resides over the sacred land.

It covers just 240 acres and rises 244m at its highest point.

But the most peculiar part of the island lies in its rules of entry, specifically who can and cannot step foot on its shores.

Women are completely banned from accessing the island due to an overarching religious tradition.

Okinoshima is considered a shinto kami, which adheres to an ancient Japanese religion focusing on diligent rituals.

The priests who work on the island enforce the female entry ban, but the exact reason why it exists remains shrouded in mystery.

According to the Japan Times, it might have something to do with women having periods.

Writer Ryo Hashimoto said: “There are varying explanations for the ban, but some say it is because menstruation would defile the site.

“Shinto treats blood as an impurity.”

Another theory is that traveling to the island by boat used to be extremely dangerous and so women were forbidden from going as a protection offering.

Even for men, access to Okinoshima is difficult. All visitors must strip naked and take part in a purification ritual before they arrive.

They are only allowed to visit one day per year, on May 27, to celebrate a festival dating back to 1905.

No one can take anything from the island upon leaving, not even one piece of grass.

Another condition for entering is to keep the details of your visit a secret when returning to the outside world.

Closer to home, the UK’s Lake District has also been awarded Unesco World Heritage status, after a 20 year battle for the privilege.

The endangered Great Barrier Reef is not in danger, says UNESCO https://briefnews.eu/the-endangered-great-barrier-reef-is-not-in-danger-says-unesco/ https://briefnews.eu/the-endangered-great-barrier-reef-is-not-in-danger-says-unesco/#respond Mon, 10 Jul 2017 12:16:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-endangered-great-barrier-reef-is-not-in-danger-says-unesco/

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization had voted not to add Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to its list of sites in danger. The baffling decision was taken despite the reef’s currently perilous state, where back-to-back coral bleaching events threaten more than two thirds of its length. Even worse, is that UNESCO published a paper just last month, saying that if nothing was done, the Reef would die in a century. The cause of this spectacular act of cognitive dissonance is political, thanks to hard lobbying from Australia’s government.

The Great Barrier Reef is a wonder of the natural world, and is pegged to benefit Australia’s economy to the tune of $ 56 billion. If it was added to the danger list, the country would be forced to take drastic action to protect it, which could threaten its short-term profitability. Not to mention that Australia is building a $ 4 billion coal mine which will ship tonnes of climate change-causing material through the Reef itself. Building the mine, and cutting a shipping canal through the reed to support it, is likely to cause extraordinary harm to the local ecosystem.

As Reuters explains, UNESCO’s decision prevents “political embarrassment and potential damage to the country’s lucrative tourism industry.” It also serves as an endorsement of Australia’s current plan to maintain the Reef’s ecosystem through its own, lighter-touch methods. UNESCO did, however, say that it held some concerns about the health of the Reef, urging the country to improve water quality in the surrounding area. Although, given that climate change is the biggest factor as to its current condition, backing a coal project next door will seem like adding insult to injury.

Israeli govt debates evicting UN from Jerusalem in wake of scathing UNESCO resolution https://briefnews.eu/israeli-govt-debates-evicting-un-from-jerusalem-in-wake-of-scathing-unesco-resolution/ https://briefnews.eu/israeli-govt-debates-evicting-un-from-jerusalem-in-wake-of-scathing-unesco-resolution/#respond Mon, 08 May 2017 06:28:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israeli-govt-debates-evicting-un-from-jerusalem-in-wake-of-scathing-unesco-resolution/ The Israeli government held a debate on Sunday, vowing to kick out UN and affiliated agencies from its longstanding offices in East Jerusalem, as proposed by a minister of culture, after UNESCO passed a strongly-worded resolution, labelling Israel “the occupying power.”

While no information on the outcome of the meeting is yet available, there is only a slight chance that such an idea could be actually translated into action with the Israeli Foreign Ministry reportedly warning of repercussions.

“The professional opinion that will be presented is that Israel is signatory to an agreement with the UN and other international conventions under which the UN headquarters is granted diplomatic immunity,” a senior Foreign ministry source said ahead of the meeting, as cited by Haaretz.

The unnamed official added that the Foreign Ministry would remind Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev, who has been a driving force behind the initiative, and the like-minded ministerial officials, of the necessity to heed international treaties.

The adverse consequences can be avoided in only one case, he said, which, however, appears to be highly unlikely.

“The only way to expel the UN headquarters from the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood is if the UN decides to vacate it on its own accord,” the ministry was expected to warn, according to the official.

The controversial proposal from within Israel’s power circles was triggered by an Arab-sponsored resolution passed by the UN culture body, the UNESCO, last week, provoking massive backlash in Israel.

The resolution, introduced by Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar and Sudan and passed by UNESCO on Tuesday saw 22 countries casting their votes for the motion versus 10 against. Three countries did not attend the vote while a majority, 23 representatives, declared their abstention.

The document chastised Israel for its rampant construction activity in East Jerusalem, in particular, calling out “Israeli occupying authorities” for their failure to “cease the persistent excavations, tunneling, works and projects in East Jerusalem, particularly in the Old City of Jerusalem, which are illegal under international law.”

It went on to stress that all steps by the Israeli authorities that “have altered or purport to alter the character and status” Jerusalem should be deemed “null and void and must be rescinded forthwith.”

The resolution and its wording immediately drew ire from the Israeli officials, with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu blasting it as a “delusional resolution” and a “harassment” which “has a price.”

Following up his menacing words with a deed, Netanyahu announced that he had tasked the Foreign Ministry to cut $ 1 million form the Israeli funds bound to the UN.

Israel is no stranger to such penalties in response to what it perceives as hostile actions on the part of the UN. Back in March, the Israeli government already employed a similar measure, slashing $ 2 million from its annual UN contribution, citing “hostile resolutions” by UN’s Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, which was later the one calling for restraint, also took aim at the resolution, referring to it as an “unnecessary politicization of UNESCO.”

Regev then went even further, saying that there is no point of harboring a UN compound in East Jerusalem, claiming that Israeli authorities “have been sovereign in the city for 50 years, so there is no need for UN monitors.”

“They were given use of the compound to oversee the ceasefire agreement from the Six-Day War. It’s an agreement that is no longer relevant. This saga has to end,” the minister said last week in an interview to Israel’s Channel 2, as cited by The Jerusalem Post.

Contrary to the outrage voiced by Tel Aviv, Palestine hailed the resolution. In a statement, following the vote, Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the organization for not caving in to “the campaign of intimidation, political bullying, and misinformation” it said Israel was waging to undermine the discussion and deflect attention “from the real and important issues addressed in the resolution.”

The UN headquarters is in Armon Hanatzv, a neighborhood in southern East Jerusalem, hosting officers of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), those of UNESCO and the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
