While Vikings was never meant to be faithful to real-life events, many of its characters have a counterpart in Viking kings and mythical warriors.

The life and death of the real Ivan played out differently and probably for the better.

The real Ivar the Boneless was also born with weak bones, a condition called osteogenesis imperfecta, but despite that, was still considered one of the greatest Vikings of all time

As for his death, there are multiple different accounts but seem to point that he did in fact die of disease, which hopefully was less painful than what happened to his TV version.

Vikings season 6, part 2 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

NCIS spoilers: Fans uncover Abby Sciuto’s real name in unearthed scene https://briefnews.eu/ncis-spoilers-fans-uncover-abby-sciutos-real-name-in-unearthed-scene/ https://briefnews.eu/ncis-spoilers-fans-uncover-abby-sciutos-real-name-in-unearthed-scene/#respond Sun, 05 Apr 2020 09:40:44 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ncis-spoilers-fans-uncover-abby-sciutos-real-name-in-unearthed-scene/

Abby was not always a completely open book during her time on screen, but viewers felt as if they knew her pretty well.

That is, until a viewer came along on the Little Things website, where a fan pointed out her middle name was present in some paperwork.

They wrote: “If you look closely at the paperwork Abby fills out in the season 12 episode ‘The Lost Boys,’ you’ll see it reveals her full name: Abigail Beethoven Sciuto.”

It was certainly no secret Abby’s first name was really Abigail – but Beethoven as a middle name may come as quite a shock to some viewers.

Fans are chomping at the bit for Outlander to return so they can find out what’s next for the Fraser family and especially now Brianna Randall Fraser (played by Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) have been reunited.

But now STARZ executives have revealed season five won’t be launching on the network, and as a result, Amazon Prime in the UK, until early 2020, many are searching out tidbits to keep them going through the rest of “Draughtlander”.

Luckily Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan and the show’s official Twitter account are on hand to give fans what they’re looking for.

Scottish actor Sam shared the show’s images in honour of the time-travelling hit’s five-year anniversary on his Instagram stories today, and while many of the stills have already been seen, one depicted the Frasers standing happily with Young Ian (John Bell).

Viewers remember the youngster completed his journey in season four by rescuing 20th Century historian Roger from the Mohawk tribe.

After months of gruelling travelling and searching for the character, whom Ian had wrongly sold to the tribe at Jamie’s request to deal with the man he believed to have raped his daughter Brianna, the Frasers were triumphant.

Unfortunately the tribe were unwilling to let Roger go so easily, prompting Young Ian to make a big decision.

Jamie shared an emotional goodbye with his nephew, and many were left wondering if the character would ever return to the series.

Do the images confirm Young Ian’s return in season five, giving the Fraser family a happy reunion?

Unfortunately, it’s not clear if the images are simply throwbacks from the cast posing on set during filming season four, but they still might have slipped in a sneak peak for season five.

STARZ CEO Jeffrey Hirsch recently revealed the real reason Outlander won’t be returning until 2020.

Speaking to reporters in Los Angeles about the decision to delay season five’s release, the boss explained it was to cater to the right audiences.

Outlander season 5 returns to STARZ and Amazon Prime Video in 2020.

  • Archaeologists discovered the remains of a harnessed horse in a Pompeii suburb.
  • The horse was located in a villa that archaeologists believe may have been owned by a high-ranking military official.
  • Pompeii and its surroundings were destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D.

ROME (AP) — Archaeologists have unearthed the petrified remains of a harnessed horse and saddle in the stable of an ancient villa in a Pompeii suburb.

Pompeii archaeological park head Massimo Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA that the villa belonged to a high-ranking military officer, perhaps a general, during ancient Roman times.

  • An Anglo-Saxon cemetery with skeletons buried among 1,600-year-old ancient treasures was discovered in England.
  • Archaeologists noticed many of the female skeletons were lavishly surrounded by brooches, jewelry, tweezers, and weapons, indicating that the people buried were most likely wealthy.
  • The researchers will conduct more analyses on the unearthed bones and relics to learn more about how this ancient community lived.

Archaeologists have uncovered an “extraordinary” Anglo-Saxon burial site in Britain that dates back 1,600 years. Its 20 occupants are surrounded by ancient treasures such as amber beads, silver rings, and even a pair of tweezers.

Specialists became aware of the site when a local metal detectorist began finding various metal goodies, from copper-gilded brooches to ancient spearheads. These artifacts were reminiscent of those generally found at Anglo-Saxon burial sites, so archaeologists began digging to uncover any remaining artifacts before the area could be damaged by agriculture.

Stunning ‘erotic’ fresco unearthed in Pompeii bedroom (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/stunning-erotic-fresco-unearthed-in-pompeii-bedroom-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/stunning-erotic-fresco-unearthed-in-pompeii-bedroom-photos/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 18:05:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stunning-erotic-fresco-unearthed-in-pompeii-bedroom-photos/

A “sensual” depiction of a legendary Spartan queen having sex with a swan has been unearthed in the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Further evidence, not that it was needed, that people just love erotic pictures.

The newly discovered fresco, which captures a scene from classical mythology, was found in a bedroom in the town that was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.

It depicts the figure of Leda being impregnated by the Roman god Jupiter, who has taken the form of a swan. The incredibly detailed artwork shows Leda protecting the swan with her cloak as he sits on her lap.

Archaeologists uncovered the, incredibly vivid, fresco on Friday during works to bolster Pompeii’s structures after rains and wear-and-tear caused some ruins to collapse, the body that oversees the ancient site said.

Depictions of Leda and Jupiter were not uncommon in Pompeii but the archaeological park’s director Massimo Osanna praised the discovery as exceptional because the skilled artist had painted it to make it appear that Leda was looking at whoever entered the bedroom.

“Leda watches the spectator with a sensuality that’s absolutely pronounced,” Osanna told Italian news agency ANSA.

He noted the fresco’s context in the Greek “myth of love, with an explicit sensuality in a bedroom where, obviously beside sleep, there could be other activities.”

The painting was found in an opulent house where another splendid fresco was discovered earlier this year. Osanna said one theory is that the owner was a rich merchant who wanted to display his good taste by filling his house with myth-inspired art.

Leda is an important figure in classical mythology. She was said to have borne children fathered by the god Zeus, the Greek version of Jupiter, and by a mortal king of Sparta. She is the mother of Helen of Troy and the twins Castor and Pollux.

Centuries after the destruction of Pompeii the story of the swan’s seduction of Leda became a favoured subject in Renaissance Italy and inspired works by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.

The fresco is the latest in a series of impressive recent finds in Pompeii. Last month graffitti was discovered that shifted the timeline of the catastrophic eruption by several months while the separate discovery of six skeletons huddled together shed further light on how people reacted as Vesuvius laid waste to their world.

New giant dinosaur species unearthed in Argentina https://briefnews.eu/new-giant-dinosaur-species-unearthed-in-argentina/ https://briefnews.eu/new-giant-dinosaur-species-unearthed-in-argentina/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 04:13:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-giant-dinosaur-species-unearthed-in-argentina/ Three well-preserved specimens of a new gigantic dinosaur species, named Lavocatisaurus agrioensis, have been discovered by a multinational team of scientists in the Argentine province of Neuquén.

The remains an adult and two juveniles reptiles which roamed the Earth some 110 million years ago, were unearthed by a team of Argentine and Spanish paleontologists. The new species, which the discoverers named Lavocatisaurus agrioensis were herbivorous and belonged to Sauropods saurischian clade of dinosaurs with very long necks, long tails, and a small head.

In addition to parts of the neck, tail and back, the team found “most” of the cranial bones, including the snout, the jaws, and teeth, making it possible to create an “almost complete reconstruction,” noted Jose Luis Carballido, a researcher at the Egidio Feruglio museum and the national council of scientific investigations.

The fossils showed the adult dinosaur to be 12 meters in length, while the young lizards, scientists believed, measured between six and seven meters long.

The scientist believes that the species has moved around and died together in a group from circumstances yet known to the scientific community. Desert conditions of the topography at that time could have contributed to their demise as herbivores need an abundance of flora and water to sustain their existence.

“While one can imagine that this group of sauropods could have adapted to move in more arid environments, with little vegetation, little humidity and little water, it’s an area in which you wouldn’t be looking for fossils,” said Carballido.

Film unearthed from WWII trench reveals faces of Soviet fighters who battled against Nazis (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/film-unearthed-from-wwii-trench-reveals-faces-of-soviet-fighters-who-battled-against-nazis-video/ https://briefnews.eu/film-unearthed-from-wwii-trench-reveals-faces-of-soviet-fighters-who-battled-against-nazis-video/#respond Thu, 01 Nov 2018 19:55:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/film-unearthed-from-wwii-trench-reveals-faces-of-soviet-fighters-who-battled-against-nazis-video/

A photo from a Leica camera, which spent 77 years buried in a WWII trench near Russia’s southern city of Rostov-on-Don, has been restored by researchers, revealing a stunning image of volunteers fighting Nazis.

A team of amateur archeologists, devoted to recovering remains and artifacts from WWII sites, made the discovery when they unearthed the trench in one of the city’s suburbs.

In autumn of 1941, it was the site of fierce battles as the Russians tried to prevent Nazi troops from entering Rostov-on-Don.

The camera was tucked away carefully in a bag, probably by a Red Army officer whose remains were discovered in the trench along with a helmet and machine gun shells.

“He was defending his position and died when the Germans hit him with a frag grenade”, says Andrey Kudryakov, a search brigade chief.

The camera itself is a legendary Leica A model, one of the world’s first portable small cameras, created in Germany in 1925. The film inside was mostly damaged beyond restoration, except for one frame which miraculously remained intact. Experts carefully applied various methods to develop the surviving frame piece by piece.

The result was a photo showing two dozen (or more) men and women dressed in civilian clothes or paramilitary fatigues. The men had stern faces, while the women were pictured smiling.

Historians believe that this could be the last photo of a local volunteer battalion that was one of the first to face Nazis during the opening phase of the war.

But who are those people and did they survive the perils of war? Search for the relatives are now underway in Russia, local researchers say.

Sarah Ferguson caught doing THIS at royal wedding to Prince Andrew in unearthed footage https://briefnews.eu/sarah-ferguson-caught-doing-this-at-royal-wedding-to-prince-andrew-in-unearthed-footage/ https://briefnews.eu/sarah-ferguson-caught-doing-this-at-royal-wedding-to-prince-andrew-in-unearthed-footage/#respond Tue, 21 Aug 2018 20:47:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sarah-ferguson-caught-doing-this-at-royal-wedding-to-prince-andrew-in-unearthed-footage/ Sarah Ferguson, 58, is still close to ex-husband Prince Andrew, 58, often speaking fondly of him in interviews.

As the duo look forward to the wedding of the younger daughter Princess Eugenie, 28, in October, thoughts have turned to the lavish nuptials they enjoyed in 1986.

Some of the most famous memories of the day include a young Prince William acting as page boy, and Fergie messing up Andrew’s full name as she said her vows.

But there is one moment which seems to have gone unnoticed – until now.

In unearthed footage which has surfaced on YouTube, Sarah appears to do something members of the Royal Family are rarely, if ever, seen doing – winking.

As she promised to “obey” her groom during her vows, the bride turned her face towards him and appeared to wink.

It is a brief moment of fun which is over in less than a second, and is difficult to see thanks to the thick veil Sarah is wearing, however it was reported in some news outlets at the time.

The Los Angeles Times wrote in 1986: “Some spectators said they saw her wink at Andrew beneath her veil as she vowed to ‘obey’ her husband.”

Her wink is further backed up by a moment caught more clearly on camera later as the newlyweds walked out of church.

The ecstatic bride can be seen winking at someone sitting on the left hand side of the church, which would have seated her friends and family.

Back in the 80s, the British Royal Family were not known for public displays of emotion, so Fergie’s unbridled joy was unusual.

One element of her wedding which has endured in the public memory is her wedding gown, which was a large, classic 80s design.

The ivory number had huge shoulders and sleeves typical of the era and a wide skirt.

A corset tightly nipped in Sarah’s dress, which she revealed in her autobiography she lost six pounds to fit into.

On the day she married Prince Andrew in 1986 Sarah made sure to include some subtle symbols of their love on her dress.

Sarah’s dress was designed by Lindka Cierach, who has also dressed Helen Mirren, Lady Victoria Hervey and Cherie Blair.

The satin dress has lots of detail created by embroidery and beading. This detail depicted symbols that indicted the coming together of Sarah and Andrew.

Bumblebees and thistles were featured on the gown as a nod to Sarah’s family crest. Anchors and waves were added as a nod to Andrew’s work in the navy.

Sarah Ferguson: Five facts about the Duchess of York

Childhood

Sarah is the second daughter of Major Ronald Ferguson and Susan Mary Wright.

Her parents divorced in 1974, with her mother going on to marry polo player Héctor Barrantes in 1975 and moving to Argentina. Sarah stayed in the UK with her father, who remarried in 1976 and went on to have three more children.

Wedding

Sarah married Prince Andrew on 23 July 1986 at Westminster Abbey in London.

She wore an ivory-silk wedding gown designed by Lindka Cierarch which had a 17 foot train and 20 foot veil. As is tradition, Sarah wore a diamond tiara, and her wedding band was crafted from Welsh gold.

The couple spent their honeymoon abroad the real yacht Britannia off the coast of the Azores Islands.

Divorce

Sarah and Andrew divorced in 1996 after separating in 1992.

However the couple remain on good terms, even living together in the Royal Lodge from 2008 until Sarah moved to a ski chalet in Switzerland they bought together in 2015.

Career

Sarah has written children’s books for many years, her first being a series about Budgie The Helicopter in the early 90s.

She has also been the US spokeswoman for WeightWatchers after famously battling her weight over the years.

On top of commercial endeavours, the Duchess devotes plenty of time to charity, including Children in Crisis, which she founded in 1993.

Social media

Fergie, as she is known to friends, uses both Twitter and Instagram.

She has over 200,000 followers across the platforms, and shares many insights in to her life.

Most of the Royal Family are not on social media, but are represented by Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, or Clarence House.

Sarah’s daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, are the exception, with both joining their mother on social media.

3,000yo Egyptian cheese infected with deadly disease unearthed at ancient burial site https://briefnews.eu/3000yo-egyptian-cheese-infected-with-deadly-disease-unearthed-at-ancient-burial-site/ https://briefnews.eu/3000yo-egyptian-cheese-infected-with-deadly-disease-unearthed-at-ancient-burial-site/#respond Fri, 17 Aug 2018 17:55:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3000yo-egyptian-cheese-infected-with-deadly-disease-unearthed-at-ancient-burial-site/ Connoisseurs say that the taste of cheese improves with age – but what if it was left to age for 3,200 years? Archaeologists in Egypt now have the chance to find out, but it comes with an unexpected bonus: deadly ancient bacteria.

A team from the University of Catania in Italy found the cheese at the tomb of Ptahmes, a 13th-century BC mayor of Memphis in Egypt. The cheese was found wrapped with canvas inside a broken jar. It could be the most ancient cheese ever discovered, according to the team’s study, published in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

“The archaeologists suspected it was a kind of food left for the owner of the tomb and they decided to ask for chemical analyses,” said lead author Enrico Greco, a leader in the new field of ancient food discoveries known as ‘archaeofood.’

Ancient Egyptians may have dodged a potentially life-threatening bout of illness by not eating the cheese, after researchers found the specimen contained signs of a bacterium known to cause brucellosis, a deadly disease spread from animals to people via unpasteurised dairy.

The tomb of the Memphis city official was found to contain murals showing various barter scenes featuring cheese, a product that had a medicinal use in ancient times. It is also thought that cheese was included in feasts buried alongside wealthy Egyptians.

“Until now, we were not sure whether it was really part of the daily life of the ancient Egyptians,” said Greco. “We do not have much information on what the taste could be, we know it was made mostly from sheep’s and goat’s milk, but for me it’s really hard to imagine a specific flavor,” he added.
