Unity is what the opposition needs to succeed, he added.

In a major interview with RT’s Oksana Boyko, Gudkov criticized the Russian authorities for not giving “everyone,” and particularly the anti-corruption blogger turned opposition politician, Alexey Navalny, equal opportunities to participate in the political process and elections. The politician repeatedly referred to the rejection of Navalny’s application for the March 2018 presidential race as an example of the perceived flaws in Russia’s political system.

However, he also admitted that “there is a serious split in the opposition.” Asked about why it is so difficult for the Russian opposition “to put their political ambitions to the side and focus on forming a united front,” Gudkov called attempts to get together “a headache,” adding that “we [the opposition] cannot sometimes unite [our] efforts.”

The politician avoided detailing the reasons behind the situation, though. When Oksana Boyko brought up what she called “one of the main Kremlin’s criticisms of the opposition” to Gudkov by saying that the opposition politicians are sometimes considered to be “a bunch of egomaniacs who put their personal interests above their common values,” he said it was “a disease of our [Russian] society” in general, and not just of the opposition.

The former MP illustrated the divisions in the opposition front when speaking about the idea of an election boycott, an idea that has been championed by Navalny. “I understand him,” Gudkov said, calling Navalny the “most popular” figure in the Russian opposition. At the same time, he repeatedly stated that he does not “support his strategy to boycott elections.”

“I think we need to support those [Russian President Vladimir] Putin critics who will be in the ballot list,” Gudkov said, adding that the proper strategy would be to take part in the vote and to “do everything possible” to create a support base for the opposition. He also shared some of his plans to “unite” people who have various attitudes to voting.

“People do not like to take risks. They want changes but they won’t take risks,” the politician said, adding that those who could potentially back the opposition forces are lacking leadership.

Speaking about the fight against corruption that boosted Navalny to prominence, Gudkov said that it actually “should be out of politics.” At the same time, he admitted that “all politicians” will still use it for “their own political purposes,” as “there is a strong demand in our society to fight…corrupt officials.”

Dmitry Gudkov was a Russian State Duma MP between 2011 and 2016 after he was elected to the lower house of the Russian parliament from the Fair Russia party. However, in 2013, he was expelled from Fair Russia for taking part in a loose bloc of non-parliamentary street opposition. He then resumed his work as an independent. In 2017, Gudkov sided with the opposition parties Yabloko and PARNAS (Party of People’s Freedom) during the municipal elections in Moscow.

The opposition politician also repeatedly spoke about his intention to enter the 2018 mayoral race in Moscow. His efforts in the 2017 Moscow municipal electoral campaign were also allegedly aimed at putting opposition activists in municipal councils so that their signatures would allow him to pass the municipal filter.

Georgia State University receives grant to train underrepresented students in IoT tech https://briefnews.eu/georgia-state-university-receives-grant-to-train-underrepresented-students-in-iot-tech/ https://briefnews.eu/georgia-state-university-receives-grant-to-train-underrepresented-students-in-iot-tech/#respond Sun, 22 Oct 2017 08:17:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/georgia-state-university-receives-grant-to-train-underrepresented-students-in-iot-tech/

Georgia State University (GSU) has received a $ 300,000 Digital Economy Initiative grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the largest community foundation in the world, in collaboration with Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility, to propel students, especially those underrepresented in the tech scene, to pursue a technology career.

“One of the biggest challenges facing technology organizations is finding talent to successfully navigate the next digital revolution, with new technologies such as the Internet of Things transforming the globe,” Phil Ventimiglia, GSU’s chief innovation officer, told Hypepotamus. “To be successful, students need to be able to effectively communicate, collaborate, and solve problems digitally.”

The three-year grant will fund a new Digital Learners to Leaders program, an initiative to encourage students to use IoT technology — from data sensors and machine learning to smart city software — to create solutions for challenges within their community.

“At Georgia State, we have been working to incorporate digital literacy skills and competencies throughout our core curriculum. This grant allows our students to augment in-class learning with exposure to professional problem-solving that will prepare them for the careers of today, and for future careers that do not even exist yet,” says Ventimiglia.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) will lead the program and will host and pair high school students with university students to look at pain points across Atlanta’s educational, business, government, and nonprofit community. Through workshops, online activities, an annual conference, and internships, students will identify more effective solutions for those issues.

“It is part of CETL’s mission to provide innovative learning opportunities for Georgia State’s students,” says Julian Allen, senior director of learning innovations at CETL. “This program encourages students from diverse backgrounds to engage with leading technology experts to create real technology solutions that will benefit the local community.”

The program aims to help develop the state’s future technology-focused workforce and bring diversity to a growing field in need of new perspectives for problem-solving, says Tiffany Green-Abdullah, manager of learning community development at CETL. Georgia State, which is located in downtown Atlanta, has a diverse student body and connections to local businesses and community partners, and thus makes an ideal hub for this program.

“As technology transforms the way we live and work, Cisco believes educational institutions and organizations focused on emerging entrepreneurs can be a powerful force for change for local economic development,” says Tae Yoo, senior vice president of Cisco Corporate Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility, in a statement.

“Public universities such as Georgia State University not only have the capacity to meet industry demand for a digitally skilled workforce in the Atlanta area, but also play a leading role in shaping entirely new ideas and industries to fuel the local economy and create the jobs of the future.”

‘Don’t Die’ is one author’s spotlight on gaming’s underrepresented people and views https://briefnews.eu/dont-die-is-one-authors-spotlight-on-gamings-underrepresented-people-and-views/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-die-is-one-authors-spotlight-on-gamings-underrepresented-people-and-views/#respond Wed, 04 Oct 2017 04:35:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-die-is-one-authors-spotlight-on-gamings-underrepresented-people-and-views/

David Wolinsky created his interview series Don’t Die to figure out how video games can be better. The impetus was Gamergate, but it’s since expanded to cover a whole slew of topics in the games industry, examining the culture and hearing from folks who both make and play games.

“Now, I don’t mean ‘better’ in terms of the end product and whether you enjoyed playing it,” said Wolinsky in an email to GamesBeat. “I mean reconciling the industry’s obsession with broadcasting a message of being ‘innovative’ while simultaneously so much of it is culturally regressive, creatively conservative, and publicly uncaring about how its workers and fans treat themselves and one another.”

Don’t Die began in January 2015, in the midst of Gamergate’s campaign of online harassment of women in the games industry. Another big part of Wolinsky’s motivation, though, was that he wanted to know what made developers tick. He felt that most coverage lacked a human element.

“You just don’t get the complete picture of what motivates someone to create from the press they [do to] promote their projects or their scattered behavior on social media,” said Wolinsky. “It seems like market pressures dictate a lot about what people are making, to the extent that it feels like few developers are making the games they truly want to.”

Beyond just discussing video games, Wolinsky says he wants to explore issues that are prevalent in many creative industries. For instance, he’s interviewing people in the restaurant industry who he says successfully raised awareness in the mainstream about poor labor conditions for restaurant workers. He’s also interviewing people in Kuwait about the games industry in the Middle East and how Western media has negatively impacted it.

“I’m more interested in connecting dots to adjacent but uncharted territories when linked to video games,” said Wolinsky. “I’m exploring labor issues and how other creative industries interact with their audiences beyond blind fandom. Part of that includes video games, but I’m increasingly finding similar issues pop up across the board in creative fields.”

Gathering new perspectives

Wolinsky has interviewed a wide range of people, such as user experience consultant Rosie Pringle and Bakari Kitwana, the author of The Hip-Hop Generation. He’s talked about the intersection of fandom and gaming with Amanda Brennan, the senior content insights manager at social media platform Tumblr, and discussed interactive mediums with film documentarian Mark Cousins. Some of the people he’s interviewed don’t even play games, so he asks them how they perceive the industry.

“While I want to avoid retreading the same topics over and over again, I’m finding people are always able to provide new shades to things we think are already fully understood,” said Wolinsky. “Otherwise, left to my own devices, I’m always poking at parallels between video games and intersecting authorities from other interest groups.”

Don’t Die has an open-door policy, and anyone can pitch an idea using a Google form on the site. When Wolinsky’s deciding to interview someone, he says the main criterion is whether or not that person is being heard. He selects people who “feel voiceless” and ignored by mainstream media, who he criticizes for relying too much on only a handful of sources so that it can quickly churn out articles.

“The 24-hour news cycle has hemorrhaged onto all our screens, giving the illusion that we’re fully understanding a story before anyone’s had half a chance to process and breathe,” said Wolinsky. “In fact, the handful of voices that have grown to be the loudest are at best only a small fraction of anything. So, I’m interested in talking to people who have things to say on topics they would otherwise be shouted down, talked over, or perhaps silenced by non-disclosure agreements.”

He says one of his priorities is to provide insight and perspectives about the games industry and culture for media outlets who may not understand it.

“The greater reading culture doesn’t really seem to care about video games or the video game industry, and while I don’t at all advocate for it being the most important subject on the planet, I do believe there are lessons to be learned,” said Wolinsky. “You don’t have to go far on the internet to feel like warped and lazy reporting is at an all-time high. No amount of pivoting to video will ever serve as a replacement for patient, thorough reporting that allows stories to emerge on their own terms. I increasingly see video games being used as a blank in another agenda, when in fact they are a global workforce and emerging medium that deserves more nuanced and promiscuous coverage on its own terms.”

Not only do a lot of media not seem to care about video games, but Wolinsky also points to the way tech companies like Uber and Google frequently make headlines and are excoriated for their internal practices, while maltreatment in the games industry doesn’t seem to provoke the same amount of outrage.

“Companies like Uber, Google, and Facebook are taken to task with diligence, while game companies with employees living under the poverty line don’t rate a response when I pitch stories from my interviews to editors,” said Wolinsky.

No more spoon-feeding

Wolinsky has conducted over 200 interviews for the project. When he first started, he noticed that a lot of folks “above a certain pay grade” were unwilling to speak out about the issues of toxicity that plagued the industry.

“In the rearview, after 225 interviews so far, if there’s one trend that sticks out among people in the industry it’s their pervasive desire for someone else to speak out,” said Wolinsky. “We’re sliding into an era where the work done by artists on projects with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion — and arguably everywhere else — is being commodified. Anybody barely scraping by in this economy today can intuit the quality of life concerns that, well, aren’t concerns for management.”

In the end, Wolinsky says he’s creating the kind of reporting that he wants to read, and he encourages people to think for themselves. Too much of the internet, he says, “spoon-feeds” content and ideas to readers.

The same charge can be made for game companies as well. Wolinsky says that he sees a lot of new titles as setting aside the kind of games that developers actually want to make. Instead, they’re attempting to “solve” genres with titles like Super Mario Maker, which give players the task of using their own creativity to create the kind of games they think they want.

“But there was a time not long ago when we didn’t have this internalized narrative about what a video game is and how it should make us feel,” said Wolinsky. “Much more was up for grabs. I feel like we’re forgetting we’re still just at the beginning of all this.”

Don’t Die wants to remind us of this and to shine a light on different ways of viewing games. It’s a unique medium, but it’s also as a part of a wide network of other industries, all struggling with their own demons and all striving to innovate and create.

45% of Intel’s new hires are diverse, but underrepresented minorities are just 12.5% of work force https://briefnews.eu/45-of-intels-new-hires-are-diverse-but-underrepresented-minorities-are-just-12-5-of-work-force/ https://briefnews.eu/45-of-intels-new-hires-are-diverse-but-underrepresented-minorities-are-just-12-5-of-work-force/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 01:14:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/45-of-intels-new-hires-are-diverse-but-underrepresented-minorities-are-just-12-5-of-work-force/ Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel

Change isn’t easy. Intel said today that 25.8 percent of its work force are women, and 12.5 percent of the staff are underrepresented minorities. And that’s after a few years of trying.

About 45 percent of the company’s hires employees were from diverse backgrounds in 2016, according to the company’s 2016 Diversity and Inclusion Annual Report.

The company increased the overall representation of women by 2.3 percentage points since 2014, and achieved pay parity and promotion parity for women and underrepresented minorities.

During the year, Intel introduced its WarmLine service, which is designed to provide employees with guidance and counsel on career-related issues. It also launched a multicultural retention and progression study that helped leadership better understand the barriers to retaining and progressing underrepresented minorities.

“Intel is evolving, and diversity and inclusion are among the most important forces driving that evolution and reinvention,” said Danielle Brown, chief diversity and inclusion officer, at Intel, in a blog post. “Meeting our diversity hiring and retention goals in 2016 demanded a continued dedication to inclusive hiring practices.”

Intel has moved to establish equity across the company through evaluating pay, progression and advancement of women and underrepresented minorities.

Intel exceeded the 2016 hiring target with 45.1 percent diverse hiring and is committed to surpassing this in 2017.
Positive gains were also made in the overall representation of women, which rose 2.3 points since 2014 to 25.8 percent.

“We hit our year-end goal of achieving 100 percent pay parity for both women and underrepresented minorities and achieved promotion parity for females and underrepresented minorities as well,” Brown said. “We met our overall diverse retention goal, retaining diverse employees better than parity, which means that we retained the overall diverse population at a higher rate than the counterpart majority.”

But Brown said there is “still much work to be done to achieve our 2020 goal of full representation, namely with increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and countering the retention issue.”

Representation of underrepresented minorities in Intel’s U.S. workforce has increased modestly from 12.3 percent in 2014 to 12.5 percent in 2016.

“We endeavor toward our goal of full representation, as Intel firmly believes that reaching a critical mass of women and underrepresented minorities in our workforce through creating an environment where everyone can thrive, brings ample benefits not only to Intel but the entire tech industry,” Brown said.

Since its launch in 2016, more than 1,200 employees have used the WarmLine service, which focuses on support for the retention of employees.

In addition, Intel undertook its largest-ever study of retention and progression for our multicultural employees. This study surveyed over 15,000 Intel employees.

“It provided us a thorough look into the challenges our employees of color face and brought us many key insights for improvement that we have put into action,” Brown said.

In 2017, data and learnings from the multicultural retention and progression study and the WarmLine will be used to create tailored playbooks to improve diverse representation, and improve inclusion within each business unit, Brown said. Those playbooks will be distributed to managers and other business leaders.

Intel also said it has achieved 100 percent pay parity for females and underrepresented minorities in the U.S. It first achieved gender parity in 2015, and it maintained that in 2016.

The company also said that it promoted five women to the level of Intel Fellow, a distinguished technical leadership position. In addition, Intel improved representation in its vice president ranks this year. Of the newly appointed U.S. vice presidents, 41 percent are women or underrepresented minorities. Intel has also made progress in diversity among early, middle, senior, and leadership levels for both gender and ethnicity.

As for other populations, such as the disabled, veterans, and the LGBTQ community, Intel said it is also making strides. Intel has a $ 125 million diversity fund for investing in startups with diverse leaders, and it is also investing in an “inclusive supply chain.” In 2016, Intel wanted to spend $ 400 million with diverse-owned suppliers, but it actually hit a target of $ 555 million.

Intel is also holding its Hack Harassment events, where it encourages college students to come up with ways to combat online harassment.

“Moving into 2017, Intel will continue to improve the representation of underrepresented minorities and women within its U.S. workforce and establish challenging hiring, retention and progression goals,” Brown said. “Additionally, we will continue to foster an inclusive culture. Key to that culture is ensuring we focus on continuously improving our manager capability, which includes managers who are effectively trained in building and leading diverse and inclusive teams.”
