For the first time in his professional career, Joshua was taken to the judges’ scorecards and in truth 118-110, 118-110, 119-109 looked a little kindly on his performance.

And it was unlikely to send a strong message across the Atlantic to Deontay Wilder. But if his boxing didn’t, his voice most certainly did.

“Just like Dillian said: Wilder let’s go baby. Let’s go!” Joshua told the 78,000 people in the Principality Stadium.

Joshua fighting has become a global event, and that was no clearer than when four separate flags could be seen around the ring. Joshua flew his green-and-white Nigerian colours as well as those of the United Kingdom while Parker had both the New Zealand flag and the Samoan one.

Both men are fiercely proud of their familial heritage as well as the countries of their birth: Joshua bears a tattoo of Africa on his right shoulder while Parker was led out by his two uncles in traditional Samoan dress.

That the Welsh crowd seemed to tolerate, but the two national anthems wore on the patience of a crowd who had been riled up by a spectacular knockout of David Price, who himself had knocked down Alexander Povetkin before the WBA’s No 1 challenger showed his true class in the fifth round.

But once the anthems had finally ended, there were just three men in the ring and it was a predictably cagey start with Joshua looking the work the body and Parker trying to stay out of trouble.

When the Kiwi did get trapped on the ropes, Joshua looked to let fly with combinations while Parker’s escape route was to charge at him. It appeared effective although he was caught by some first upper-cuts in the third round while trying to get out of the neutral corner.

Joshua repeatedly looked to his favoured overhand right in the opening rounds for the big shots, especially as a counter-punch, but Parker’s speed was evident in his evasion.

The cagey nature of the fight continued, aided by referee Giuseppe Quartarone keenness to jump in and call break at the slightest hint of a clinch. Joshua fell foul of that in the seventh round, attempting the land his famous uppercut after the referee’s instruction, which triggered trainer Kevin Barry almost to climb the ropes and take matters into his own hands.

It was Rob McCracken who was fuming a round later though when Quartarone broke a seemingly legal exchange, the type that Joshua would have relished. It led to a farcical moment in the ninth that left both boxers looking to the referee expecting another premature break, only for him to raise his arms as if yo say “what do you want me to do?”.

The Italian seemed to recognise his own mistake and allowed them to work more extensively on the inside and Joshua started to favour the upper-cut more and more, although it was the jab that opened up a small cut on his right eye.

In the closing rounds, neither fighter seemed to fade. It seemed unfair that Joshua won by such a wide margin on the cards, but he had done enough with his jab to win the fight.

In a widely anticipated move, Xi’s close ally, Wang Qishan, who led a thorough anti-corruption crackdown, was promoted to vice president. Wang stepped down from his senior position in the Communist Party as head of an anti-corruption watchdog last October after reaching the age of 68, a customary age for high-ranking Chinese officials to go into retirement. The age limit is traditional, but non-binding.

Wang received only one vote against, with 2,969 delegates backing his promotion. Along with scrapping presidential term limits, the congress last weekend abolished term limits for the vice president as well.

The repeal has prompted speculation in the media that Xi eyes a life-long presidency for himself. The top Chinese Communist Party paper, however, denied the rumors. It clarified ahead of the vote that the measure “does not mean a life-long term system for leading officials.”

Speaking at a fundraiser on March 3, US President Donald Trump caused quite a stir when he jokingly suggested the US should “give a shot someday” to having a “president for life,” calling Xi “great” and causing his critics to chastise him for “dictatorial” leanings.

Responding to the backlash, Trump said he was merely joking, before launching an attack on “fake news” media for deliberatively taking his light-hearted remark at face value.

The Manchester man’s bid to regain the WBA lightweight title ended in failure as the classy Venezuelan outpointed him for a second time.

Linares was just too good as he looked even slicker than in his September win over Crolla.

‘Million Dollar’ did not underperform here, he was just simply not in Linares’ class.

It was brave, but the boxing brain and brawn of Linares was too much for him.

The Tokyo-based fighter gave an almost punch-perfect display to retain the title and his status as a three-weight world champion.

It was not the result that the 14,000 crowd inside Manchester Arena wanted, but they did get to witness one of the world’s top fighters in action even if he was beating their man.

Crolla was welcome into the venue in his hometown to an ear-shaking reception.

The Manchester United nut was treated to songs he sings himself when he’s watching his beloved team at Old Trafford.

Linares was, as expected, booed to the arena but there was no real ill-feeling for the Venezuelan road warrior.

He was also well respected by Crolla with no pre-fight insults as both just focused on providing another exciting affair – and it turned out to be just that.

Crolla is British boxing’s Mr Nice Guy but he promised he would get nasty to take the champion out of his rhythm.

He would find that an impossible task as Linares started on the back foot, popping his jab to find range before delivering fierce right hands.

His array of shots was so impressive, even in the early stages.

Crolla’s early success was to the body, but it only opened him up to the right uppercut that would be the visiting fighter’s best weapon throughout.

The Manchester man felt the force of one at the start of the third round and it seemed to deter him from taking risks as he tried to get inside the effective jab of the defending champion.

Crolla finally had some success in the fourth with a straight left landing after a missed uppercut, but it was not enough to take the round.

Linares, watched by promoter and ring legend Oscar De La Hoya from ringside, then went up a gear in the fifth as he started to sit down on his shots more and looked to be hurting the home favourite.

The atmosphere was still electric though as the crowd continued to sing for their man as the challenge he faced was laid bare.

A cut over the left eye in the sixth was only going to make it more difficult.

They also roared their man off the canvas when he was dropped by a left uppercut in the seventh.

It was a sickening shot that all but ended any slim hope Crolla had of turning this around.

But it did not put the brave Manchester fighter off having a go as he had his best round in the eighth.

Crolla finally disrupted Linares’ rhythm and let some sharp combinations go.

But the success was short lived as Linares regained control in the ninth as every time he was put on the back foot he responded with sharp rights that rocked the hometown favourite.

Linares then dished out more punishment in the 10th before he cruised over the line to take it 118-109 on all three of the judges’ cards.

Crolla can be proud of his effort though as his rollercoaster career was never expected to have got to a level where he would be sharing a ring with a fighter of Linares’ class.

The fact that he went the distance again with Linares, who had a year lay-off before their first fight, was impressive in itself.

This was his 40th fight and he may have to consider his future, but you get the feeling there may be one more chapter in the exciting tale for Crolla.
