During Monday’s episode of This Morning, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield spoke to travel editor Simon Calder for advice on where viewers could go in the UK for a short break. With half-term just a few weeks away, the pair wanted to help families find somewhere safe and affordable to enjoy a break.

However, as Simon suggested areas in the middle of Wales, viewers complained it was “unacceptable” of him to suggest they head to a country where there are local lockdowns.

While the south and north of Wales are under local lockdowns, Simon said Machynlleth in Powys and Aberystwyth in Ceredigion were both regions to consider visiting.

He added Wales was an “easy” option for a UK holiday which was the final straw for many viewers watching at home.

Taking to Twitter to comment, one fan complained: “Shame that most people living in Wales aren’t allowed to visit these lovely places- might be a good reason for this though. Just a thought…”

This Morning isn’t the only ITV show to be hit with Ofcom complaints.

Britain’s Got Talent’s latest episode, the last of the semi-finals, received 1,000 complaints regarding Nabil Abdulrashid’s comedy set and Amanda Holden’s racy gown.

Nabil, 35, entertained many viewers with his stand-up routine but some took offence as he mocked racists.

Amanda meanwhile angered BGT fans as she opted for a flowing navy gown with a thigh-high split and lacy corset.

In previous weeks, Britain’s Got Talent received over 28,000 Ofcom complaints following Diversity’s Black Lives Matter-inspired routine.

The pair referenced the recent death of George Floyd in the US with the powerful performance and received support from ITV regarding the routine.

Judge Alesha Dixon attracted another 1,900 when she showed her support for Diversity by wearing a BLM necklace the following week.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV at 10am.

Pentagon denounces any unilateral military action in ‘their’ part of Syria as unacceptable https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-denounces-any-unilateral-military-action-in-their-part-of-syria-as-unacceptable/ https://briefnews.eu/pentagon-denounces-any-unilateral-military-action-in-their-part-of-syria-as-unacceptable/#respond Thu, 13 Dec 2018 04:40:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pentagon-denounces-any-unilateral-military-action-in-their-part-of-syria-as-unacceptable/

The US is worried that “unilateral” military action against its proxy forces might jeopardize its foothold in Syria, claiming that the Kurds are vital in the battle against IS, as Turkey vows to get rid of “separatist terrorists.”

Despite major breakthroughs in the battle against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists and in the ongoing reconciliation process in Syria, the US has repeatedly made clear its intention to remain in the country indefinitely, pledging to continue to back the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to counter Bashar Assad and Iranian influence in the Kurdish-dominated part of Syria. The presence of some 2,000 US military ‘advisors’ in the country has not only angered Damascus, but has also placed Ankara in direct confrontation with its NATO ally, especially after US-backed fighters attempted to set up parallel government structures.

To get rid of what he called a “separatist terrorist organization” east of the Euphrates, where the US-supported YPG Kurdish militia of the SDF now controls much of the territory, the Turkish president on earlier this week promised to launch a new military campaign in Syria “within a matter of days.”

Washington, keen to protect its interest in the area, has –somewhat hypocritically– warned Ankara against launching a “unilateral” military campaign that might endanger US soldiers, who have recently established observation posts along the Turkish-Syrian border. Kurds, the Pentagon stressed, remain a “committed partner” in Washington’s fight against Islamic State.

We would find any such actions unacceptable

“Unilateral military action into northeast Syria by any party, particularly as US personnel may be present or in the vicinity, is of grave concern,” Commander Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement. “We would find any such actions unacceptable.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, however, believes that there is not much of a threat from the crippled Islamic State in Syria anymore, and that the Turkish military has the right to act to get rid of what he called a “terrorist corridor” forming alongside its border. “It is time to realize our decision to wipe out terror groups east of the Euphrates,” Erdogan said.

It is clear that the purpose of these US observation posts is not to protect our country from terrorists but to protect terrorists from Turkey.

“Our target is not the American soldiers, it is the terror organizations that are active in the region,” Erdogan added in a televised speech, which triggered a strong response from the Pentagon.

Ankara has already conducted two major offensives in northern Syria with the help of the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army. Earlier this year, Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch in northwestern Syria after the US announced its renewed commitment to maintaining support of the predominantly-Kurdish militia with training and weapons. Another cross-border incursion by the Turkish military, called Operation Euphrates Shield, was held from August 2016 to March 2017 with the aim of driving out IS terrorists, and the US-backed forces away from the border.

“It is a good first step. It is a big step,” Trump said, admitting, though, that “some questions” do remain and that he will be dealing with Congress on how to proceed to address the issue.“Saudi Arabia has been a great ally but what happened in unacceptable,” Trump emphasized.

“I would prefer if there is going to be some form of sanction, or what we may determine to do if anything,” the president said. “But I would prefer that we don’t use as retribution, canceling the $ 110 billion-worth of work, which means 600,000 jobs.”

“They have been a great ally in the Middle East. We need them as a counter-balance to Iran. So it’s not the simplest solution. It’s not the simplest situation to be in,” Trump reiterated, expressing hope that “it will get solved, it will get solved.”

Trump said he was going to call Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for more details and that Riyadh already promised him a “full report” into what happened to Khashoggi, a journalist who wrote for the Washington Post, after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. According to numerous reports citing Turkish officials familiar with the probe, the journalist was ambushed by Saudi agents, cruelly tortured and murdered.

When faced with a threat of potential retributions by the US and other world powers amid the widening outrage over its alleged complicity in Khashoggi’s death, Riyadh finally admitted that the journalist lost his life a “fist-fight” inside the embassy. Amid the ongoing investigation, Saudi authorities also announced the detention of 18 suspects in the case. Furthermore, King Salman fired top spy officials and issued orders to overhaul the General Intelligence Agency, a task he assigned to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ozil walked out on his international career after what he saw as “racism and disrespect” for his Turkish roots and claiming he had been made a scapegoat for the team’s World Cup failures after a meeting with Erdogan.

“Such racist treatment towards a young man who has given his all to the German national team for his religious beliefs is unacceptable,” Erdogan told reporters in parliament on Tuesday.

He said he spoke to Ozil on Monday night and described his approach as “beyond any form of admiration,” Reuters reported. He added that Ozil’s critics “could not stomach” the photograph of the football star and Erdogan that prompted criticism ahead of the World Cup.

The pair were photographed together in May, after which Ozil was called back from his holiday to explain his actions to German football association (DFB) bosses, which the player labeled a “patronizing” experience.

The DFB released a statement on Monday, admitting it had not done enough to protect the 29-year-old, and thanking him for his part in the country’s 2014 World Cup success in Brazil, although it rejected claims of racism.

“Mesut Özil played a key role in Germany lifting the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and so the DFB is and always will be incredibly grateful for his outstanding performances in Germany colours,” the statement read.

“We self-critically acknowledge that the DFB played a part in that when dealing with this issue. We also regret that Mesut Ozil – unlike Jerome Boateng – feels as if he wasn’t given enough protection when made the target of racist slogans.”

‘Unacceptable’: Turkey slams US-led coalition’s new Syria ‘border force’ using Kurdish militias https://briefnews.eu/unacceptable-turkey-slams-us-led-coalitions-new-syria-border-force-using-kurdish-militias/ https://briefnews.eu/unacceptable-turkey-slams-us-led-coalitions-new-syria-border-force-using-kurdish-militias/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 18:26:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/unacceptable-turkey-slams-us-led-coalitions-new-syria-border-force-using-kurdish-militias/ The US-led coalition says it is helping to create a thousands-strong “Border Security Force” in Syria using Kurdish SDF militias. Washington’s support, branded “unacceptable” by Ankara, is further straining bilateral ties.

Some 230 new recruits are already undergoing training in the “BSF’s inaugural class,” the Coalition’s Public Affairs Officer Colonel Thomas F. Veale told the Defense Post. The border force will be stationed along Kurdish-controlled parts of the Syrian border with Iraq and Turkey, as well as along the Euphrates River valley. It is estimated to reach a total strength of 30,000, according to the official.

Around half of the new unit will be comprised of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) veterans, while the other half is being recruited. “The base of the new force is essentially a realignment of approximately 15,000 members of the SDF to a new mission in the Border Security Force as their actions against ISIS [Islamic State] draw to a close,” the Coalition’s Public Affairs Office told Reuters in an email.

The move prompted discontent from one of Washington’s key NATO allies – Turkey. The catch here is that battle-hardened Kurdish YPG units – part of the SDF – are viewed by Ankara as an extension of the “terrorist” Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Continuous US support for the YPG has put a major strain on relations between the two states.

“The US, providing support to the PKK’s Syrian branch, PYD-YPG, on the grounds of ‘fighting ISIS,’ is taking some worrying steps to legitimize this terrorist [group] and make it lasting in the region,” Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Sunday, as quoted by NTV.

“It is absolutely not possible for this to be accepted.”

The new border force is expected to be based on the territorial principle, as its members will “serve in areas close to their homes” in order to ensure that “the ethnic composition of the force will be relative to the areas in which they serve.”

Yemen crisis: ‘Unacceptable that people die from totally preventable reasons’ https://briefnews.eu/yemen-crisis-unacceptable-that-people-die-from-totally-preventable-reasons/ https://briefnews.eu/yemen-crisis-unacceptable-that-people-die-from-totally-preventable-reasons/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 15:45:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yemen-crisis-unacceptable-that-people-die-from-totally-preventable-reasons/

The world needs to respond to the urgent humanitarian situation in Yemen, otherwise millions won‘t be able to provide the basic necessities of a decent life for their families, said Ralph El Hage, ICRC regional spokesperson.

At least 25 people were reportedly killed by a Saudi coalition airstrike at a busy market in the southwestern province of Taiz in Yemen. Dozens more civilians were wounded in the bombing raid on Tuesday. Many of the victims are children.

Saudi Arabia launched its intervention in Yemen in March 2015 to support the government against Shia Houthi rebels. The campaign has claimed thousands of lives.

Daoud Khairallah, Professor of international law at Georgetown University, says that as incidents like the Tuesday market bombing have become tragically familiar, the international community – and particularly the UN Security Council – should appoint a committee to carry out an investigation into what he described as “crimes against humanity.” In his comment to RT, he criticized the body for the lack of action.

“Washington should be more concerned, and it bears more responsibility than other countries. Why? Because it is so close to Saudi Arabia; it is the source of weapons used in Yemen; and because it can do much more. And it doesn’t,” Khairallah added. “The other party that I really would blame is the international media and particularly the American media. They don’t do what is necessary, bringing to the attention of the public, in general, the scope of these atrocities, to put an end to them; to put some pressure on responsible people.”

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Yemen is extremely worrying and may deteriorate even further if no urgent measures are taken, says Ralph El Hage, ICRC Public Relations for the Near and Middle East.

Ralph El Hage: The humanitarian situation in Yemen is extremely worrying, despite the fact that some humanitarian aid was able to reach through the port city of Hodeidah. More particularly the ICRC [International Committee of the Red Cross] managed to bring in much-needed fuel through the port city of Hodeidah. However, that is not enough.

Today we’re talking about a country where almost 18 million people need some sort of humanitarian aid – be it medical aid, access to food, access to proper clean water. This is a situation right now. Unfortunately, food and medicine prices have really increased to an unattainable extent, where people are unable to buy their basic necessities. This was primarily due to the blockade that was imposed on the country.

However, today what remains is that we need access to more humanitarian aid; we need more access through the port of Hodeidah. Also, we need the airport in Sana’a to be open so that we are able to bring in further humanitarian aid through different ports into the country. Without these ports fully functional the situation will continue to deteriorate. When it comes to cholera, we’ve seen that almost a million people are suspected to be sick with cholera today in Yemen. However, that is not the only issue when it comes to health cases. Today we’re seeing other types of diseases that are spreading. Again and again, it is because medicine and medical supplies are in really in scarce quantities in Sana’a, Taiz, Aden and all major cities and governorates in the country.

RT:  The UN has warned the situation in Yemen can result in the worst famine the world has seen. How can you comment on such a warning?

REH: The term famine is really a big term to use. What we see today is that more and more people are unable to access basic food necessities. The prices are increasing, which makes it even harder for them to purchase their necessary nutritional needs. Historically, we know that Yemen was and remains the poorest country in the Middle East. Even before this war wreaked havoc on the infrastructure and the people of Yemen, the Yemeni people were really suffering due to high levels of poverty. Now the war continues unabated with no end in sight. We only see that the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate on all levels in Yemen. Today if we look at the Middle East, Yemen is the most urgent humanitarian catastrophe, or humanitarian situation that the world needs to highlight, the world needs to respond to as soon as possible, otherwise thousands, maybe millions more will need humanitarian aid, and will be unable to provide for the children, for the families, the basic necessities of a decent dignified life.

RT:  Yemen is importing some 90 percent of food, and now over seven million people in the country are at acute risk of famine. How bad can the situation become given the ongoing blockade?

REH: As the result of the situation today in Yemen, the numbers are really sad and scary. We have [around] 20 people – men, women, and children, who lose their lives on a daily basis in Yemen, because they are unable to purchase their needed medicine, or because they are unable to provide the proper health care that they need to cure or to treat totally treatable diseases or medical cases. This is unacceptable for people to die of totally preventable reasons. If the situation continues as it is now, we will see more and more people unfortunately lose their lives.

I have seen it myself, when I was in Hodeidah and in Sana’a, children who are unable to receive the proper medical care, because government employees that work in hospitals are unable to be paid, there are no salaries, so they are unable to work, because the parents of these children are unable to pay for the needed medical examinations, or proper diagnoses for their cases, and … these children die…

Egypt summoned the ambassadors from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands on Sunday, and is also going to summon the ambassadors of the UK and Canada, to protest a statement in which the above-mentioned countries condemned the detention of a human rights lawyer, Ibrahim Metwaly. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has slammed the Western statement as “a blatant and unacceptable interference in domestic affairs and the work of the judiciary.” Metwaly was helping with an investigation into the death of Italian student Giulio Regeni, whose body was discovered in a ditch on the outskirts of Cairo in 2016, with signs of extensive torture, according to Reuters. Judicial sources told the news agency that he was detained on charges of spreading false news and joining an illegal group. The human rights advocate, who founded the Association of the Families of the Disappeared, was detained by airport security in September while heading to Geneva to attend a UN conference.

Washington’s economic war against Russian gas supplies to Europe unacceptable – Gerhard Schroeder https://briefnews.eu/washingtons-economic-war-against-russian-gas-supplies-to-europe-unacceptable-gerhard-schroeder/ https://briefnews.eu/washingtons-economic-war-against-russian-gas-supplies-to-europe-unacceptable-gerhard-schroeder/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 14:25:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/washingtons-economic-war-against-russian-gas-supplies-to-europe-unacceptable-gerhard-schroeder/

The United States would like to weaken Russia’s energy cooperation with the European Union, said former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, adding it’s unacceptable to create barriers to Russian gas deliveries to the German market.

“It’s wrong if the Americans and the European Union somehow resist each other on this issue. And still there are attempts to create some difficulties for this project [Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline – Ed.],” he told Rossiya 24 news channel.

According to Schroeder, “the fact the Americans will try entering the German market with the help of sanctions and to dominate with its liquefied shale gas is nothing but the signs of an economic war, and such war is unacceptable.”

Germany is interested in gas which it “will receive for sure and which will be cheaper than shale gas,” said Schroeder.

The ex-chancellor said German authorities were right to call the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline purely an economic project which should not be politicized.

Last week, European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager said the EU has no legal means to stop the pipeline that will deliver natural gas from Russia to Germany.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline will double the capacity of the existing Nord Stream pipeline, which goes under the Baltic Sea to Germany. The Gazprom-led project is opposed by the Baltic States and Poland.

During the EU summit on Friday, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo described the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a threat to European energy security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said this week Moscow faces obstacles constructing the new route despite the fact that diversification of gas supplies is cost-effective, beneficial to Europe and serves to enhance the security of supplies.

The Kremlin has repeatedly said the pipeline is strictly about business, accusing the United States of trying to thwart the project, as it wants to export its own liquefied natural gas to Europe.

‘Disrespectful, unacceptable and meddling’: Cuba slams Trump’s UN address https://briefnews.eu/disrespectful-unacceptable-and-meddling-cuba-slams-trumps-un-address/ https://briefnews.eu/disrespectful-unacceptable-and-meddling-cuba-slams-trumps-un-address/#respond Wed, 20 Sep 2017 09:20:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/disrespectful-unacceptable-and-meddling-cuba-slams-trumps-un-address/ Cuban flagHAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba on Tuesday slammed U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest comments about the island as “disrespectful, unacceptable and meddling,” while reiterating it was not involved in the alleged incidents that had harmed U.S. diplomats in Havana.

The sharply worded Foreign Ministry statement came after U.S. and Cuban delegations met in Washington to discuss bilateral relations, the first such high-level meeting between the Cold War foes since Trump took office in January.

Their meeting took place on the same day Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling Cuba “corrupt and destabilizing.” He also said he would not lift the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba until it made “fundamental reforms.”

Cuba said it had voiced “strong protest” against his comments, as well against his new policy toward the Communist-run nation. The Republican president announced in June a partial rollback of the U.S.-Cuban detente forged by his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.

“In the wake of the disrespectful, unacceptable and meddling statements made by President Donald Trump in his address to the U.N. General Assembly at a time when the U.S.-Cuba Bilateral Commission was sitting in session, the Cuban delegation voiced a strong protest,” the Foreign Ministry statement said.

U.S.-Cuban relations have become especially strained since the State Department said last month its personnel in Havana had experienced physical symptoms from what it could only describe as “incidents.”

donald trump united nationsAssociated Press/Evan Vucci

The symptoms ranged from hearing loss to mild brain injury, a State Department official said last week, adding that the toll of victims had risen to 21 people linked to the U.S. Embassy. Several Canadians were also affected.

Cuba has denied any involvement and the United States has not blamed it, although Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Sunday it could close its embassy in response.

“Cuba has never perpetrated or will ever perpetrate actions of this nature, and has never permitted or will ever permit any third-party use of its territory for this purpose,” Cuba’s Foreign Ministry said.

“The Cuban authorities have shown keen interest in both clarifying this matter.”
