HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson will use the second half of the club’s worst season in more than a decade to foster its next generation of stars.

After Gold Coast all but shut the finals door for the Hawks, leaving them 4-8 leading into the bye week, Clarkson said he would use the example of the club’s quick rebounds over the past 50 years as inspiration for the task ahead.

Part of that rests with a number of his “no-name” players who he hopes will respond to the challenge, as the last wave of players did after the difficulties experienced in 2009 and 2010.

Without late withdrawals Luke Hodge and Luke Breust on Saturday, as well as a string of other key players, the young Hawks could not stop a masterclass performance from Gary Ablett (37 disposals) and some old-fashioned grit from Gold Coast, which kept their own season alive.

“They have a book called ‘The Hard Way’ about our footy club for a reason … I don’t know why but we find a way to do it pretty tough from time to time, which is what we are going through right at the minute,” Clarkson said.

“We have had ebbs and flows a lot over the last 50 years, (but) what this footy club has been great at, is once it has dropped away, it has managed to get back up there pretty quickly.

“We had a really, really young side … (it) is really starting to test our depth a bit, (but) the pleasing part is we are seeing the next generation of Hawthorn players coming through.”

Clarkson was at a loss to explain a few umpiring decisions, including a costly 50m penalty against Kaiden Brand in the final term that resulted in a goal.

“I am not able to comment on disgraceful umpiring … so I am better off not saying anything,” he said. “I don’t know what it was for.”

“We didn’t lose the game because of the umps, but there were a few dubious decisions over the course of the game. You’ve just got to take the swings and roundabouts and unfortunately we hit a few road blocks in that regard.”

He said Hodge and Breust would likely return after the week’s break, when the Hawks will take on Adelaide at Adelaide Oval in Round 14.

Jack Gunston played his best match of the season, kicking five goals, with Clarkson saying much of it came from better use of the ball from his teammates going forward.

Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade was pleased with his team’s ability to close out the game when the Hawks came at them during the middle stages of the last term.

“I think we’re on the upward curve,” he said. “There might be some inconsistency going forward, as a young group. But we’re learning.”

He was frustrated Ablett was forced to spend eight minutes on the bench midway through the last term as they searched for a break in play to be able to get him back on.

“There were a few things said in the (coaches’) box, we need to be better,” he said of the communication issue that saw Ablett stranded for too long.

Eade said a final punishment for Jarrod Harbrow, who was left out of Saturday’s game following a drink-driving charge, would be determined in the coming days. But he refused to guarantee the defender would return for Saturday night’s clash with Carlton.

“We’ve met as a group, the key stakeholders … and that’s with the CEO and other people up above,” he said. “I think it’s just about done but there’s just a few finer points.”

SYDNEY Swans coach John Longmire has revealed he called the AFL umpiring department following last year’s Grand Final defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

The Swans were on the wrong side of the free kick count that read 20-8, which included a handful of controversial calls when the game was in the balance early in the last term.

A post-game analysis of the game found that the umpiring fell short of the standard expected from the three umpires of that elite calibre.

Like his predecessor Paul Roos, Longmire has long been an advocate for full-time umpires, but is adamant there is no lingering bitterness after the Grand Final.

“Yeah we had a chat, but its all done and dusted after the event,” Longmire told SEN Breakfast.

“We need to put more resources into the umpiring and the umpires need to spend more time working on their craft.

“Its very difficult with the whole industry going full-time, to have part-time umpires.

“I understand there’s probably not an absolute full-time role there, but to be able to spend more time working on your craft is really important in the industry to get better at it.”

AFL CONSIDERING TWO FULL-TIME UMPIRES

A 12-day AFL study tour to Europe in November gave 32 umpires and coaches the opportunity to canvass a variety of sports and see how they operate.

English Premier League referee John Moss — one of 18 full-time officials in the competition — addressed the 40-person group while they were in London.

“It will be interesting to see what came out of that (European trip),” Longmire said.

Former interim umpiring boss Luke Ball did concede the league would employ one or more full-time officials in the “not too distant future..”

But no binding decision has been made since Peter Schwab took over the role, leaving Longmire to contemplate what could have been in the 2016 decider.

“I’m more inclined to ask what is the best amount of time for us to have access to the umpires in order to achieve the best results on the weekend,” Schwab told AFL media last month.

“Two full days or three half days should be our thinking on that rather than Monday-Friday regardless.”

Former umpire Stuart Wenn does not believe employing full-time adjudicators is the magic solution.

“John’s comments were very balanced and in principle, what he is saying it right,” Wenn told SEN.

“Whether full time (umpires) is the answer, I’m not so convinced.

“A lot of those guys are in very high paid careers and are well established in those by the time they actually get to the AFL.

“There would be guys on the AFL List that would be earning upwards of $ 250,000 to $ 300,000 a year in their day-to-day jobs, so you are asking them to give up a lot.”

While plenty of players have never put themselves back through the torment of replaying a losing Grand Final, the Swans confronted the defeat just days after the Bulldogs triumphed by 22 points.

“We dealt with it quite a while ago,” Longmire said.

“It was the Wednesday straight after the game when we sat down and watched it and went through it.

“That’s the best way to do it, just to confront it. We talked about it and you need to really look at the areas like you always do to improve and get better at it. Then we put it to one side and get on with it.

“There is no point sitting on it over summer and waiting to address it when we get back to pre-season. We needed to address it straight away which is what we did.”

Longmire is hopeful luckless defender Alex Johnson will play football in 2017 after five knee reconstructions, while he also admitted he had an inkling Tom Mitchell would seek a trade away from the Swans before the end of their 2016 campaign.

Meanwhile, Lance Franklin won’t play in the Swans intra-club match on Friday due to an ankle complaint. Luke Parker (knee) and Gary Rohan (shoulder) will also miss.
