The “analysis” carried out by the Guardian paper established that the US fundraising bodies, which provide donations to the British think tanks, had received $ 5.6 million (£4.3 million) since 2008.

This money was used to support four UK organizations – the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), the Adam Smith Institute, Policy Exchange and the Legatum – that played and keep playing a key role in the Brexit debate.

Those conservative think tanks have been advocating free trade deals with less governmental control, which is a stance “likely to benefit big American businesses” that oppose the EU tight regulations, imposed after the 2008 financial crisis, the Guardian wrote.

Earlier this week, the IEA released a paper that insisted that Britain should cover its losses from Brexit by striking radical free trade agreements with the US and other countries.

According to the authors, such accords should soothe controls on hedge funds and banks; reduce taxes; open all UK services, including healthcare, to foreign competition; as well as abolish many of the EU regulations in data protection, pharmaceuticals, food safety and other areas.

Despite such publications, the think tanks insist that they remain impartial and take no specific angle regarding Britain’s future within the EU and its relations with the block, the paper wrote.

The Guardian said that the exact sums received by the IEA, the Adam Smith Institute, Policy Exchange and the Legatum from the US were “unclear” as the think tanks have a policy on not disclosing their donors due to privacy reasons.

However, the paper added that its report “leaves the think tanks facing questions as to whether wealthy Americans have undue influence in British politics, particularly over the form Brexit takes.”

And the questions are already being asked, with Labour MP and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, John McDonnell, taking to Twitter to demand an “independent inquiry” into the foreign funding of the think tanks as well as their links to the UK’s ruling Conservative Party.

He was echoed by other users, who sounded the alarm over what they called “foreign meddling” in British politics and urged the practice to be curbed.

Some commentators pointed out that the media’s focus should switch from scary stories about Russian hackers and Moscow’s alleged interference into Western electoral process to attempts by the US to influence other countries.

As one British expat in Europe put it: «While some people are fixated by Russia f**king around in the digital space Americans are f**king around on the ground. It’s the Americans who get their interests represented day in day out in this way, by penetrating the media.»

Following accusations against Russia in the US, politicians in the UK followed suit and tried to blame the Kremlin for Brexit, saying that it influenced the voters through Facebook and social media.

However, the claims turned out to be unsubstantiated, with Facebook itself saying earlier this year that the probe only revealed “minimal activity” on the part of Russia-linked pages during the vote on Britain’s future in the EU.

Type 2 diabetes: Can you guess how many teaspoons of sugar equate to the UK's RDA? https://briefnews.eu/type-2-diabetes-can-you-guess-how-many-teaspoons-of-sugar-equate-to-the-uks-rda/ https://briefnews.eu/type-2-diabetes-can-you-guess-how-many-teaspoons-of-sugar-equate-to-the-uks-rda/#respond Sat, 29 Sep 2018 10:23:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/type-2-diabetes-can-you-guess-how-many-teaspoons-of-sugar-equate-to-the-uks-rda/

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the level of sugar in the blood is too high.

Diabetes is a lifelong condition, but can be controlled by making simple lifestyle changes and taking medication.

If not controlled, type 2 diabetes can lead to serious complications with the heart, nerves, eyes and kidneys.

So how much sugar is it safe for diabetic people to consume?

The UK recommended guidelines for sugar intake state added sugar should not make up more than five per cent of the energy we get from food and drink each day.

This equates to about 30g of sugar for adults and children over the age of 11, which is equal to seven cubes or seven teaspoons of sugar.

Children aged four to seven should consume a maximum of 19g, which is equal to five cubes or five teaspoons of sugar.

Children aged seven to ten should consume no more than 24g, which is equal to six cubes or six teaspoons of sugar.

The guidelines are the same for both diabetic people and people without diabetes, as even people without diabetes are advised to limit sugar intake.

This is because eating too much sugar can cause tooth decay, but also, many sugary foods and drinks also contain lots of calories, which can contribute to becoming overweight.

In turn, being overweight can increase the risk of developing diabetes and other health problems like heart disease and strokes.

“As part of a healthy, balanced diet, you should consume fewer foods and drinks that are high in sugars,” warned the NHS.

“Sugary foods and drinks can cause tooth decay, especially if you have them between meals.”

“Many foods that contain added sugars also contain lots of calories but often have few other nutrients. Eating these foods frequently can contribute to becoming overweight.”

The NHS advises reading the nutritional information on food labels to see how much sugar certain foods and drinks contain.

The nearer to the beginning of the ingredient list sugar is, the more sugar the product contains.

The ‘carbohydrates (of which sugars)’ figure on the nutrition labels will state how much sugar the product contains for every 100g.

More than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g is high, while 5g or less of total sugars per 100g is low.

Sugar is often listed under different names on ingredients lists, which can disguise the fact it is present.

Sugar can be listed as: glucose, sucrose, maltose, honey, molasses, maple syrup, glucose strip, hydrolysed starch, corn syrup, agave nectar, coconut palm sugar and treacle.

UK's privacy watchdog wants to fine Facebook £500,000 over Cambridge Analytica scandal https://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 03:15:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uks-privacy-watchdog-wants-to-fine-facebook-500000-over-cambridge-analytica-scandal/

The UK’s Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham has announced that she intends to fine Facebook up to £500,000 (US$ 664,000) over the Cambridge Analytica Scandal, in which the social media giant failed to safeguard user’s information. “New technologies that use data analytics to micro-target people give campaign groups the ability to connect with individual voters. But this cannot be at the expense of transparency, fairness and compliance with the law,” she said, in a statement. Before a final decision is made on the fine, Facebook will have a chance to respond to the Information Commissioner’s Office. “We have been working closely with the ICO in their investigation of Cambridge Analytica, just as we have with authorities in the US and other countries. We’re reviewing the report and will respond to the ICO soon,” the company said. British firm Cambridge Analytica was forced to shut down in May after it was alleged to have acquired data on 87 million Facebook users, without their consent, to target them during political campaigns. The scandal sparked two separate investigations, one by the Electoral Commission, into the company’s role in former UKIP leader Nigel Farage’s Leave.EU campaign, and one by the Information Commissioner’s Office, which has announced a wider inquiry into the use of such data in politics. The company’s practices also led to a US Congressional inquiry. Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has apologized for his company’s handling of the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal.

Halfords children on bikesHalfords

A bike trip with the family is a great way to keep everyone happy this weekend

Cycling is a worthy option for keeping all the family entertained – it’s fun, free, good exercise, and a fantastic way to experience the sights and sounds of the great outdoors.

And it’s easy to take the kids out to see different parts of the UK on the bikes, with a National Cycle Network of 14,000 traffic-free or quiet on-road miles up and down the country to be explored on two wheels.

Here are our four favourite bike rides in the country that the whole family will enjoy, with some helpful advice from Halfords to ensure all goes smoothly.

The Camel Trail, Cornwall

One of the most popular and entertaining routes in the country, the Camel Trail runs from Padstow to Poley’s Bridge, via Wadebridge and Bodmin.

The 17.3-mile (27.8 km), trail passes through the wooded countryside of the upper Camel Valley and alongside the charming Camel Estuary.

The cycle trail was once a railway built so trains did not have to negotiate steep inclines or sharp turns. Car parks break up the route into 5-mile (8km), sections suitable for families.

To combat the terrain, the Carrera Sulcata bike from Halfords will have adults soaring over obstacles and the 21 gears will help you tackle any hills. It’s part of a range of bikes with 20 per cent off at Halfords.

Too busy to shop? You can reserve via Click and Collect, and your bike will be built for free so you’re ready to go.

South Coast Promenades – Worthing to Brighton

This route is largely traffic free and it takes you along the coast, where you can admire the beaches of Worthing and Brighton on one side, and the South Downs in the distance on the other.

The surfaces along the way are flat and comfortable for children, so they’ll enjoy riding alongside you taking in the coastal scenes.

If your kids are new to the saddle, Halfords will measure and fit your bikes to find the perfect size – and even fit stabilisers if needed.

The Apollo Cupcake bike (ages 3-5), makes a great first bike, or for older children, the Apollo Gridlok (ages 8-11), has front suspension for improved comfort and control. Alternatively, the Apollo Envy bike (ages 7-9), is as comfortable on roads as it is tracks.

Need to dig out your old bikes from storage? Halfords’ team can carry out a Free Bike Check – and offer a range of services to ensure that your bike is in tip-top condition.

They will even conduct a free check on any bike bought at Halfords once you’ve had it for six weeks, to make sure all is well.

Three Parks Trail, South Wales

This easy, traffic-free ride takes in three of Wales’ most picturesque parks.

At Hengoed you’ll ride past the magnificent ‘Wheel of Drams’ artwork, an eight-metre high sculpture constructed from old coal carts, known as ‘drams’.

Worrying about how you’ll get your bikes to your cycling adventure? Halfords currently has 20 per cent off a range of cycle carriers – for example, this Thule bike rack. It’s currently ‘buy one get one half price’ at Halfords – including free fitting – along with a range of 20 per cent off cycle racks.

Halfords’ experts can fit your bike rack to your car’s roof bars for you, and if you don’t have roof bars fitted, you can find out which are right for your car here.

When taking the car on a road trip to Wales, a free Halfords Summer Car Check will ensure that you’re not making any surprise pit stops en route.

Book online or just pop into your local store and you’ll get a free car bulb and battery check, as well as checks on your wiper blades, engine oil level, air conditioning and any windscreen chips. They’ll even give you a free screenwash top-up.

Halfords’ in-store experts can fit almost anything including wiper blades, stereos, dash cams, sat navs, cycle racks, roofboxes and batteries. Pop in-store or go online to find out more about WeFit, Halfords’ fitting service.

Bristol to Bath Path, Bristol

This well-loved path features a variety of sculptures and a working steam engine at the old train station at Bitton that the kids will love.

On the way, stop off to enjoy a pub lunch at Saltford, and take in the picturesque views of the River Avon.

In Bath, you’ll find plenty of ways to spend the rest of your day, including the Roman baths, art galleries, shopping and botanical gardens.

Your children can even ride like (modern day) Romans in their own chariot powered by your legs, in the Halfords Double Bike Trailer (50lbs weight limit per child, not for use with a child under 12 months old).

If they want to be slightly closer to you, the Hamax Rear Child Bike Seat (suitable for children older than 9 months and up to 22kg), is the perfect solution. Both are currently half price in-store and online.

Want to be fully prepared? Check out Halfords’ Buyers’ Guides for information on what to purchase that suits you and why – there are also some helpful How To Guides.

Gym fitness: Moves for over 60 – UK's oldest personal trainer sets up OAP Bootcamp https://briefnews.eu/gym-fitness-moves-for-over-60-uks-oldest-personal-trainer-sets-up-oap-bootcamp/ https://briefnews.eu/gym-fitness-moves-for-over-60-uks-oldest-personal-trainer-sets-up-oap-bootcamp/#respond Thu, 12 Apr 2018 17:52:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gym-fitness-moves-for-over-60-uks-oldest-personal-trainer-sets-up-oap-bootcamp/

Getting to the gym and building a level of fitness can seem more difficult in your 60s and above, but Britain’s oldest personal trainer is encouraging people of all ages to get back in the gym.

Eddy Diget, 73, who is Britain’s oldest personal trainer and trains at DW Fitness First, believes that you should be fitter than ever before as you enter your older years.

Appearing on ITV’s Tonight series at 7:30pm tonight, he set up an OAP Bootcamp for those who are elderly or physically less able.

He said: “I believe that the older you are, the more physically active you should be than ever before – to maintain the rest of your life!

“In your 50s or 60s and you finally have the time to prioritise staying healthy to enjoy all your later years.”

He added: “I’m 73 and I was doing 350 kilo leg presses yesterday.

“I’ve always said I want people to look at me in a coffin one day and say ‘he looks too good as a corpse!’”

Eddy’s inspirational message is that exercise is for everyone, no matter what your age is or whether you are suffering from a health condition.

“Ninety percent of the time, older people believe there is no reason to exercise. They listen to friends – or even professionals – who advise they can’t do this or that and often they end up doing nothing.

“I train people with who are partially sighted, have spinal bifida and cancer.

While exercise does not cure illness – in many cases – it can effectively help to manage symptoms.”

So how do you keep fit as you get older? Eddy has outlined two moves to help you get back in the gym.

Fitness moves for over 60s

1 Sit on a chair, position a broom across your lap, bend forward sliding the broom’s handle over your knees to your ankles. Sit up and repeat.

2 Lean against a wall holding a broom handle at shoulder height, turn to the right and then the left, ensuring you are turning your head in the direction of movement. Return to centre and repeat.

He has also provided three tips for those over 60 wanting to return to looking after their bodies.

Fitness tips for getting back into the gym

Live your life instead of sitting down and thinking about living it

Find something you enjoy. Whether that’s swimming, canoeing or mountaineering!

Listen to your body, if you find it’s too much, simply back off. When first starting out, remember you are a baby learning to crawl, not to walk.

Lastly, Eddy outlined the universal benefits of exercise for people of all ages.

He said: “From improvement of blood flow to creating a stronger immune and slowing the ageing process, the benefits of exercise are plenty – and importantly, exercise just makes you want to get up in the morning!”

UN Security Council passes Russia-sponsored resolution on Yemen after UK's Iran-bashing draft fails https://briefnews.eu/un-security-council-passes-russia-sponsored-resolution-on-yemen-after-uks-iran-bashing-draft-fails/ https://briefnews.eu/un-security-council-passes-russia-sponsored-resolution-on-yemen-after-uks-iran-bashing-draft-fails/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 01:55:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/un-security-council-passes-russia-sponsored-resolution-on-yemen-after-uks-iran-bashing-draft-fails/ The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a Russia-tabled draft that will see a technical extension of sanctions against Yemen. It comes after Russia vetoed a rival resolution that blamed Iran for fueling the conflict there.

All 15 UNSC members voted in favor of the draft resolution on Yemen, put forward by Russia as a compromise after it vetoed a rival, “antagonizing” draft submitted by the UK, that also drew criticism from China. The UK had proposed to include a provision that would call out Iran for allegedly violating an arms embargo on Yemen, imposed at the onset of its civil war in 2015. However, that draft gained only 11 votes in support, with Russia and Bolivia voting against and China and Kazakhstan abstaining.

Having said that Russia “fully endorses the majority of the provisions” set forth in the UK-sponsored resolution, Russian UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia noted ahead of the vote that Moscow “cannot concur with uncorroborated conclusions and evidence which requires verification and discussions within the Sanctions Committee.”

Calling the situation in Yemen “far more complicated that we are frequently made to believe,” the Russian diplomat said that the UK draft is aimed at advancing a geopolitical agenda of certain countries and is based on the “selective and contentious conclusions” of the UN experts panel.

The UK draft would have caused “fracturing of security council and sow discord at a time when the Security Council is in dire need of closing its ranks,” he argued, adding that Russia’s concerns about the divisive nature of the UK draft were “shared by many delegates.”

“There is a grave danger in toying with geopolitical maps, including with the use of the most volatile material, namely relations within the Islamic world, relations between the Sunnis and the Shiite,” he warned, adding that its approval could have triggered “dangerous, destabilizing ramifications” for the whole region.

Defending the purely technical proposal, that omits any mention of Iran and extends sanctions up to February, 2019, Nebenzia said that its “apolitical” nature is what is necessary to achieve the much-needed unity at the UNSC.

China, which abstained from the vote on the UK draft, sided with the argument, with its envoy saying that the Russian draft “reflects the broadest possible consensus within the Council.”

Describing the situation in Yemen as “very complex,” the Chinese envoy also pointed to the lack of proof of Iran’s supposed violations. “It’s inadvisable to the Council to rush to conclusion in absence of adequate evidence,” he said.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley briefs the media in front of remains of Iranian

The accusations against Iran stem from the January report of the UN Panel of Experts on Yemen. The report found that some missile debris discovered in Yemen was of Iranian origin, delivered into the country after the embargo was imposed. While the panel accused Iran of flaunting the embargo by “failing to take the necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply”, it fell short of identifying the supplier of the weapons.

In December, US ambassador to UN Nikki Haley posed in front of the partially incinerated remains of a missile, purported to be Iranian-made and fired into Saudi Arabia from Yemen. She did not say when or where the missile was used or fired, or its location when found. Tehran insists it has not violated the embargo and dismissed the accusations, describing the “evidence” showcased by Haley as “fabricated.”

The US immediately lashed out at Moscow for its veto, blaming Russia for shielding a “terrorist-sponsoring” Iran. “Russia prevented accountability and endangered the entire region,” Haley said in a scathing statement ending with a thinly veiled threat: “If Russia is going to use its veto to block action against Iran’s dangerous and destabilizing conduct, then the United States and our partners will need to take actions against Iran that the Russians cannot block,” she said.

Tehran, meanwhile, said it “categorically rejects” all the allegations around its supposed arms supplies to Houthi rebels in Yemen, calling the UK-submitted draft an attempt to deflect attention from the “catastrophic humanitarian situation in Yemen,” caused by the Saudi-led coalition bombings.

The UK and the US representatives, indeed, appeared focused more on pushing Iran’s narrative than on civilians’ suffering during their speeches.

While the UN panel investigating 10 Saudi airstrikes that caused civilian casualties found last year that, in eight of them, the bombing was unwarranted and “may amount to war crimes,” the UK resolution did not mention any adverse impact of the Saudi-led campaign on the Yemeni population. The same report stated that although some weapons supplied to the Houthis were of Iranian manufacture, there has been no “sufficient evidence to confirm any direct large-scale supply of arms” by the Iranian government.

Geri Haliwell, Gok Wan, James Martin, Gabby Logan, Louis Smith and Michael Ball are among the stars who introduce us to their beloved canine friends.

Prince Harry even makes an appearance, coming face to face with an Invictus Games hero John Flint, from West Sussex, and the dog that helped him deal with his injuries.

The dog-a-thon gives each breed’s heritage, fascinating facts, key characteristics and personality traits.

New crossbreeds feature heavily, such as the chorky, sproodle, puggle, cavapoo, cockapoo and jorky.

You'll never guess which show has topped the UK's biggest Christmas Day TV audience https://briefnews.eu/youll-never-guess-which-show-has-topped-the-uks-biggest-christmas-day-tv-audience/ https://briefnews.eu/youll-never-guess-which-show-has-topped-the-uks-biggest-christmas-day-tv-audience/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 06:47:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youll-never-guess-which-show-has-topped-the-uks-biggest-christmas-day-tv-audience/

Crocodile Dundee, the 1980s comedy smash hit starring Paul Hogan, is the surprise record-holder of the UK’s biggest Christmas Day TV audience.

Some 21.8 million viewers tuned in for the film’s UK premiere on December 25 1989 – a figure that no single TV broadcast has managed to beat since current records began.

Second place in the chart with 21.3 million viewers is the episode of Only Fools And Horses shown on Christmas Day 2001, which saw the Trotters lose their fortune and Del Boy attempt to win it back on a game show.

In total there are seven episodes of Only Fools And Horses in the top 20, along with editions of comedy classics Just Good Friends, Bread and One Foot In The Grave.

Among the soaps, EastEnders appears twice, Coronation Street just once, and none of those are from the past 16 years.

The chart reflects the traditional domination of Christmas TV by the BBC, with 17 of the top 20 having been shown on BBC One.

While films make up a fifth of the chart, soap operas – a permanent fixture on December 25 for decades – barely appear, suggesting they are not quite as popular on Christmas Day as TV executives assume.

The two episodes of EastEnders in the chart are from 1986, when Den Watts famously surprised his wife Angie with divorce papers hidden inside a Christmas cracker.

Coronation Street is represented by the episode in 1987 that saw veteran resident Hilda Ogden leave Weatherfield for a new life in Derbyshire.

Missing from the top 20 entirely are Morecambe and Wise, whose most popular star-studded Christmas specials date from before the modern system of compiling ratings began in 1981.

The pair’s 1977 Christmas show is sometimes mentioned as having been watched by as many as 28 million people, but this figure was publicised by the BBC based on its own audience surveys, and is not comparable with the current system.

Another person absent from the chart is the Queen. Ratings for her annual Christmas message have not always been published and on other occasions have been split across different channels, meaning reliable comparisons are impossible to make.

The biggest TV audience on Christmas Day last year was for BBC One’s Call The Midwife, which was watched by 9.2 million.

Flu warning: Experts warn of UK's worst epidemic for almost 50 years https://briefnews.eu/flu-warning-experts-warn-of-uks-worst-epidemic-for-almost-50-years/ https://briefnews.eu/flu-warning-experts-warn-of-uks-worst-epidemic-for-almost-50-years/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 23:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flu-warning-experts-warn-of-uks-worst-epidemic-for-almost-50-years/

The warning comes as Australia is in the grip of its worst season on record with more than 70,000 cases of flu and standing room only in some Accident and Emergency departments.

Specialists say this strain is likely to hit our shores this winter as global travel means the virus will “almost inevitably” be carried across.

Professor Robert Dingwall, a public health expert at Nottingham Trent University said the outbreak presents the most serious challenge since the 1968 flu pandemic which originated in Hong Kong and killed a million people worldwide.

Scientists are concerned about “virological drift” where flu evolves so that even if a vaccine works in one country, it may not be effective months later.

Prof Dingwall said: “Based on the Australian experience public health officials need to meet and urgently review emergency planning procedures. Public Health England should be working with local authorities and local health services to ensure more hospital beds are freed up. We need to be prepared, alert and flexible.

“There is no point in trying to close the borders. It’s almost inevitable this will come to us. This is potentially the worst winter since the Hong Kong flu outbreak of 1968. Lots of people have been very badly affected in Australia and whilst their mortality rates are not out yet we suspect this is a more severe strain than most other years.”

The warning follows a speech earlier this month from NHS chief Simon Stevens who said the NHS may not be able to cope with the pressure.

He told delegates at the NHS Expo conference in Manchester: “The signs from Australia and New Zealand are that it has been a heavy flu season and many of the hospitals down there have struggled to cope. I’m confident this is not just the biggest on record but the largest flu outbreak we’ve seen for some time.”

Professor John Oxford, the UK’s leading flu expert, said more effort was needed on vaccinations.

He added: “I would be very surprised if this virus doesn’t arrive in the UK from Australia. We cannot be complacent and I am very worried about increased mortality. We need to boost our vaccination programme.”

Professor Hugh Pennington, a leading expert in disease at the University of Aberdeen, said: “We have to assume a flu outbreak might reach epidemic proportions.

“We need to find out exactly what the virus is in Australia and if it is significantly different from our vaccine.

“If it is significantly different we need to produce something that will be a match and we need to ramp up the vaccine programme for those in high-risk groups such as elderly people.”

A spokeswoman for Public Health England said it was: “Continuing to prepare for all scenarios this winter and this includes the implementation of the vaccine programme.”

She added: “Our vaccines contain the strains which the World Health Organisation recommends we vaccinate against, based on the best available evidence.

“It takes six months with current egg-based technology to produce sufficient quantities of vaccine for the annual campaign.”

But David Gandy is having the last laugh after it was revealed yesterday that he is the only male to appear in a list of the top 10 best-paid British models.

Gandy, from Billericay, Essex, earned £4million last year mainly as a result of contracts with Dolce & Gabbana and Marks & Spencer.

Only Cara Delevingne, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kate Moss took home more in 2016.

Despite turning 37 earlier this year, Gandy shows no sign of relinquishing his place at the top of a profession that he has taken by storm after winning a TV competition in 2001.

I’ve never been particularly confident in front of the camera.

David Gandy

Gandy wanted to be a vet but he wasn’t good at school so instead went on to study computing and marketing at the University of Gloucestershire.

Then his life took a very different path when, without his knowledge, his fl atmate at the time entered him in a competition run by Richard and Judy on ITV’s This Morning.

The first prize included a contract with Select Model Management – and Gandy has not looked back since.

David GandyGETTY

David Gandy is the only male to appear in a list of the top 10 best-paid British models

His breakthrough opened the door to deals with fashion labels H&M, Zara and Hugo Boss. Then in 2007 he earned that nickname when Dolce & Gabbana chose him to become the face of its Light Blue aftershave campaign.

Except it was not just his unshaven, chiselled features and blue eyes that drew attention.

Gandy wore a pair of white pants commonly known as budgiesmugglers or tighty whities.

His rippling, tanned torso was on a 50ft-high billboard in Times Square, New York, which brought pedestrian traffic to a halt. The advert – and his little white pants – attracted 11 million views online.

Catwalk appearances in similar tight pants followed and ever since clothing brands have unsurprisingly fallen over one another to get him to wear their smalls.

He has even “designed” his own range of pants for M&S and when swimwear joined the range a pair of Gandy trunks sold every minute on the collection’s first day in stores.

If anyone could “sex up” the high street, it is Gandy and he admits: “I probably wouldn’t be here without Light Blue.”

His first sniff of the perfume that made his name was onboard the boat on the way to the shoot in Capri.

Bianca Balti and David Gandy reunite for Dolce & Gabbana

Many years later it is with Dolce & Gabbana that he is most associated, to the extent that the fashion house was compelled to launch a 280-page coffee table book of images chronicling their collaborations.

Yet the model has also revealed that his success took him by surprise.

“The trend was for skinny, androgynous guys who had bodies more like girls,” he says.

“In my teens lookswise I was nothing to write home about and had no idea about fashion. At school I wasn’t the guy who got the girls or was thought to be hot. I have grown into my looks.

When my friends said they had sent my pictures in for the competition, I thought they were joking.

“Modelling wasn’t seen as an aspirational thing. It wasn’t a manly job.”

Gandy has also admitted that it took a while to feel comfortable posing nearly naked, knowing that the images would be viewed and lusted over by millions of people.

“It’s definitely something that you have to get used to,” he says.

“This is the weirdest thing in the world. I’ve never been particularly confident in front of the camera. I’m not into being the centre of attention but I knew if I wanted to be successful in the industry, it was something I would have to get over.”

It is why he tries to keep his professional and personal lives separate, stating that there are two David Gandys: the model and the bloke who loves driving cars and hanging out with his mates in Essex.

When his giant image adorned Times Square, he says he was never tempted to see it, insisting: “It’s not really me.”

Gandy also guards his love life, never revealing who he is dating.

However, it is known he has had relationships with a number of celebrities including Mollie King of girl band The Saturdays.

More recently he has been linked with lawyer Stephanie Mendoros. It is reported they have been an item since April and they were seen together at a polo event in West Sussex earlier this month.

Gandy is more at ease giving tips on how he maintains his enviable physique, revealing: “I have always played sports since I was young so I have always been in the gym. And I am nutritionally aware so I know what to eat.

Away from the catwalk he gets his thrills from racing cars

“Having the willpower to say no to certain things is the hardest. I have a sweet tooth.”

Gandy was the only male model chosen to appear at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, proving that he is not just a clothes horse.

He has also endorsed whisky and Jaguar cars. Away from the catwalk he gets his thrills from racing cars and has twice competed in Italy’s Mille Miglia (1,000 miles) event.

The action man has also tried his hand at powerboat racing. On a more cerebral level Gandy has put his university education to good use by writing for GQ and Vogue magazines, while he has been involved in several charity campaigns.

Gandy has also been an ambassador for the British Fashion Council, has recently been focusing on his own business ventures and has dabbled in acting.

He was approached for a role in the film Fifty Shades Of Grey but turned down the opportunity. When he is not doing macho things, Gandy, who lives in Fulham, London, has added yet another string to his bow by collecting antique clocks.

There is no doubt that our top male model is easy on the eye and looks great in pants. But Gandy is determined to go on showing that there is more to him than just a pair of smalls.

“Models are as popular as bankers,” he laments.

“You are seen as a brainless idiot and paid a fortune to do very little. I don’t want to just be known as the man in pants.”
