“The UK in alliance with the US is hoping to have the OPCW able to assign blame and provide a rationale for future attacks by the US and the UK,” Sterling believes.

Under Donald Trump’s administration, the US used chemical incidents in Syria as a pretext to stage two nearly instant ‘retaliatory’ strikes against Damascus without due investigation. The UK, as well as France, joined the US-led military endeavor this spring when they bombarded government bases and infrastructure in response to an alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7. A year earlier, Washington unilaterally launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Shayrat Airbase, as a response to the Khan Shaykhun chemical incident on 4 April 2017.

Moscow has repeatedly criticized the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) for mishandling its probes, cherry-picking evidence and for vague wording in their reports. JIM’s mandate expired last November, following a number of failed attempts by the UNSC to extend its authority.

“One of the problems is that OPCW has not been willing to go to the sites in some cases and they don’t pursue evidence which contradicts the Western claims,” Sterling noted.

Despite repeated failures by OPCW experts to impartially investigate chemical attack claims in Syria –and at times even to visit the sites of an actual alleged incident– an ongoing special conference of the watchdog in the Hague is set to vote on the expansion of its mandate. The proposed new powers would involve the OPCW declaring any party to a conflict responsible for any chemical incident.

“OPCW has assigned blame to the Syrian government in various instances in the past, including chlorine, but if you look at their reports they rely really on witnesses who are provided to them by the opposition. So it is very logical to question the objectivity and the independence of the OPCW,” Sterling told RT. “Even the director of the OPCW is Turkish. And Turkey, of course, is a member of NATO.”

US seeking to turn OPCW into ‘manipulation instrument’ to exert pressure on Syria – Russian MoD

All of the latest OPCW reports were in large part based on open source data, witness testimonies and video and photo evidence provided by select ‘moderate’ rebel groups and controversial NGOs, such as the Syrian Civil Defence (SCD) –better known as the White Helmets– or the US-based Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS). Those same sources by coincidence were instrumental in heating up international public outrage in the buildup for ‘retaliatory’ US-led strikes against Damascus.

“In the last several years we’ve seen a situation in Syria where the efforts of countries to overthrow, to topple the Damascus government have used claims, accusations of chemical weapons usage, and the OPCW have been a part of that,” Sterling believes.

Russia censors coverage of opposition guy’s arrest, media cries foul… replace with ‘UK’ & ‘Robinson’ https://briefnews.eu/russia-censors-coverage-of-opposition-guys-arrest-media-cries-foul-replace-with-uk-robinson/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-censors-coverage-of-opposition-guys-arrest-media-cries-foul-replace-with-uk-robinson/#respond Mon, 28 May 2018 23:19:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-censors-coverage-of-opposition-guys-arrest-media-cries-foul-replace-with-uk-robinson/ Imagine the flood of sanctimonious media headlines if Russia were to prevent the hacks from reporting on the trial of a high-profile activist such as Aleksey Navalny. Now imagine such a ban existed in the UK. Oh, wait, it does…

Imagine this: Navalny, a highly-polarizing and outspoken opponent of the Russian government, beloved by the Western press despite his nationalist background, was sentenced to 50 years of hard labor in a Siberian borscht mine after being found guilty of high treason. (Actually, he received a 30-day prison sentence for something illegal in basically every developed nation – “blocking traffic without the correct permits” – but we’re sure the Siberian exile story must be floating around somewhere, even without restrictions on media reporting.)

Tommy Robinson's supporters on Saturday outside Downing Street

Now, just really stop whatever you’re doing, put on some relaxing whale sounds music, and try to envision the blue checkmark scream-fest that would immediately break Twitter if, “in an effort to guarantee a fair trial and avoid prejudice,” a Russian court put a blanket media ban on reporting on the activist’s arrest and court proceedings.

Is it even possible to comprehend the number of hernias that would ripple through every Western news outlet and internet content farm if Russia had a law that inhibited Radio Free Europe’s ability to report on the latest abortion of Russian justice? Or even BBC and CNN?

This completely, utterly imagined out-of-this-world story still reminds us of something. The internet seems to be really unhappy over a UK court order prohibiting media outlets from reporting on the details surrounding the arrest and trial of Tommy [Redacted]. [Redacted] was [redacted] for breaching the public [redacted] outside [redacted] Crown Court on Friday.

“This is [redacted], I haven’t said a word…I’ve done [redacted],” [Redacted] said while being [redacted] by [redacted]. He would say that, wouldn’t he? Typical [Redacted].

According to the BBC, court-ordered media blackouts – like the one used to restrict reporting on Tommy Robinson’s current legal difficulties – are not entirely uncommon, and they are usually put in place to “prevent the publication of material which might prejudice a fair trial by influencing jurors to think that a defendant might be guilty.”

As for [redacted]: There may be perfectly innocent, even very reasonable reasons why the media can’t report that [redacted] was [redacted] while [redacted], and that he is now facing [redacted] for [redacted]. But we can’t help but wonder if Western media would display the same uncritical and dutiful obedience if such a decree were actually issued by… a Russian court.

‘UK behaving like Saudi Arabia’: Geert Wilders calls for release of Tommy Robinson https://briefnews.eu/uk-behaving-like-saudi-arabia-geert-wilders-calls-for-release-of-tommy-robinson/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-behaving-like-saudi-arabia-geert-wilders-calls-for-release-of-tommy-robinson/#respond Mon, 28 May 2018 21:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-behaving-like-saudi-arabia-geert-wilders-calls-for-release-of-tommy-robinson/

Anti-Islam Dutch politician Geert Wilders has criticized the arrest of Tommy Robinson, who was detained last week after drawing attention to a trial of an alleged Muslim child abuse gang,“ as an attack on free speech.

“I am here because I am shocked and outraged. What happened in the United Kingdom last week is an absolute disgrace,” the Dutch parliamentarian said while standing outside the UK Embassy in the Hague. “Freedom of speech is being violated all over Europe, and also in Britain. The lights of freedom are going out. Islam critics are taken to court, jailed, or targeted with fatwas.”

Calling Robinson a “freedom fighter,” Wilders called on the UK – “once a bastion of freedom of speech” – to stop “behaving like North Korea and Saudi Arabia” and “gagging its people” while Muslims are “pampered, protected and defended.”

Tommy Robinson was jailed on Friday, after live streaming from outside the courthouse in Leeds, initially for “intent to breach the peace,” though he did not have a chance to broadcast anything before he was hauled away. Robinson was then reportedly ordered by the judge to serve out a conditional 13-month sentence for contempt of court, handed down last year for a similar incident, in which he turned up outside a live court hearing as a “citizen reporter.”

Robinson is currently believed to be in Hull Prison, according to social media reports.

The judge ordered a media blackout of the coverage of the case Robinson attended “to avoid a substantial risk to the administration of justice in these proceedings.” More unusually, the details of the Robinson arrest and sentencing itself have also fallen under the media ban, at least until the end of the current trial.

This led to a situation where multiple outlets, including major UK media publications and RT, were forced to delete articles mentioning where he is being kept and for what crime, even if those pieces had no specifics about the proceedings he himself intended to report on.

This appears to have had the opposite of the intended effect, and not only have several outlets left their original pieces on the 35-year-old activist easily accessible, but hundreds of Robinson’s supporters held a widely-covered march on Downing Street on Sunday, demanding his release.

A petition asking Prime Minister Theresa May to free Robinson has collected over 400,000 signatures.

Robinson’s supporters, which included a UKIP MEP, have criticized the activist’s legally-mandated disappearance from news reports as “Orwellian.” Wilders, who was recently banned from entering the UK despite leading the largest opposition party in the Dutch Parliament, has made a diplomatic inquiry to British authorities over the jailing, particularly expressing concern about Robinson’s safety while in custody.

‘UK Parliament, not Trump, should set its foreign policy’ – Sturgeon on British strikes in Syria https://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-not-trump-should-set-its-foreign-policy-sturgeon-on-british-strikes-in-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-not-trump-should-set-its-foreign-policy-sturgeon-on-british-strikes-in-syria/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 10:01:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-parliament-not-trump-should-set-its-foreign-policy-sturgeon-on-british-strikes-in-syria/

The UK Parliament, not US President Donald Trump, should define British foreign policy, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said, criticizing Theresa May’s decision to join the US-led military intervention in Syria.

The main question that the British PM hasn’t answered yet is how “this action” against Damascus “taken without parliamentary approval,” will halt the use of chemical weapons or bring “long term peace,” the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader wrote on Twitter. “UK foreign policy should be set by Parliament, not US President, (sic),” she stated.

According to Sturgeon, air strikes have not resolved the crisis situation in Syria so far. “Nothing I’ve heard persuades me they will do so now,” she said, calling for “an international strategy for peace,” not “a course that risks dangerous escalation.”

May authorized the British armed forces to launch an intervention in Syria together with France and the US on Saturday morning. In her speech, she announced “coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons capability.” The allies insisted that their strikes on Syria were performed in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack by Damascus in the town of Douma, 10 kilometers from the capital, last week.

The US-led intervention took place before the experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were due to reach Douma to determine whether the attack had indeed taken place.

‘UK makes light sabers, Russia makes Novichok,’ Johnson brags – but what about Saudi weapons sales? https://briefnews.eu/uk-makes-light-sabers-russia-makes-novichok-johnson-brags-but-what-about-saudi-weapons-sales/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-makes-light-sabers-russia-makes-novichok-johnson-brags-but-what-about-saudi-weapons-sales/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 11:03:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-makes-light-sabers-russia-makes-novichok-johnson-brags-but-what-about-saudi-weapons-sales/ Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson bragged about the UK’s cultural influence, claiming its “arsenals” carried the “power of imagination.” The bold statement came from a principle facilitator of civilian deaths in Yemen.

Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s Easter Banquet in London, Johnson had a message to deliver: despite withdrawing from the EU, Britain remains a global team player and a stalwart defender of the ideals-based rule of law. Unlike Russia, which he described as a bad actor in all too many regards, Britain is apparently a bastion of commerce, science and culture.

“We have the most vibrant and dynamic cultural scene, with one venue – the British Museum – attracting more visitors than 10 whole European countries that it would not be tactful to name tonight,” Johnson said.

The jibe’s targets were quite apparent, since earlier in his speech Johnson had named every nation that backed the UK in its drive to expel Russian diplomats over the Skripal poisoning affair – “the full roll of honor,” he called it. He didn’t mention that the absentees in the list probably didn’t have the opportunities to plunder their foreign colonies for decades to fill their museums, unlike Britain.

The poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia is seen by the UK government as a closed case, with Russia the undisputed culprit – despite the police probe being in the early stages.

London pushed for an unprecedentedly large expulsion of Russian diplomats, with the US accounting for the biggest chunk of people kicked out. Johnson’s cultural superiority bragging continued, when he cited “an astonishing fact that both of the two highest grossing movies in the world last year was either shot or produced in this country: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Star Wars.’”

“And that tells you all you need to know about the difference between modern Britain and the government of Vladimir Putin. They make Novichok, we make light sabers,” the foreign secretary said, referring to the nerve agent reportedly used in the poisoning.

“I tell you that the arsenals of this country and of our friends are not stocked with poison but with something vastly more powerful: the power of imagination and creativity and innovation that comes with living in a free society, of a kind you see all around you today,” Johnson added.

There are many countries that have experienced firsthand the power of British “imagination and creativity,” including Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen in this century alone. But not the kind Johnson spoke about. Just last month, the foreign secretary and the cabinet he is part of were welcoming Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and de facto ruler Mohammad bin Salman as he visited the country.

Riyadh is among the biggest buyers of British arms, including bombs, which it uses to hit all sorts of targets in Yemen. The strikes include civilian factories, marketplaces and funeral ceremonies – strikes which has been condemned by rights groups. While brushing off responsibility for some of the cases entirely, the Saudis tend to write off others as errors or unavoidable collateral damage, so the British government doesn’t seem to be particularly bothered that UK weapons kill civilians in Yemen.

Johnson praised the UK-manufactured light sabers, which make a “mysterious buzz” to inspire children and help the country stand against Russia in a company of “admirers and friends.” Somehow the arsenals it sells to Saudi Arabia, fueling the kingdom’s three-year bloodbath in Yemen, didn’t make their way into the speech.

Diabetes is ‘storming the UK’ – Five ways to lower your risk of condition revealed https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-is-storming-the-uk-five-ways-to-lower-your-risk-of-condition-revealed-2/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-is-storming-the-uk-five-ways-to-lower-your-risk-of-condition-revealed-2/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 15:20:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-is-storming-the-uk-five-ways-to-lower-your-risk-of-condition-revealed-2/

Diabetes type 2 accounts for 90 per cent of all diabetes cases in the UK.

Obesity – a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes – has more than tripled in the UK over the last 30 years, latest statistics have revealed.

Symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, weight loss, fatigue, and urinating more often than normal.

Here are five ways to lower your risk of developing the condition, which is “storming the UK”, according to nutritionist Cassandra Burns.

Sugar cull

Cutting back on your sugar intake will lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, said Burns.

It also includes reducing the amount of refined carbohydrates you eat, including white breads, pastries and pizza.

Burns said: “Focus instead on eating whole, unprocessed foods: plenty of vegetables, healthy proteins such as eggs, fish and lean meat, whole grains, nuts and seeds, beans and lentils and natural dairy foods such as hard cheeses and natural yoghurt.”

Cut down on fruit to just two servings a day, and get your remaining five-a-day from vegetables, she added.

Stop sugar cravings

You can ease sugar cravings by adding some natural supplements to your diet, said Burns.

Some food supplements work by supporting blood glucose regulation. Look out for capsules contains chromium and green coffee extract, that helps to balance insulin levels.

“Sugar is quickly broken down into glucose in our blood – the type of sugar that converts directly to energy. But because high levels of glucose in our blood are harmful to the body, it releases insulin, which then quickly removes the glucose and stores it as glycogen or fat.

As well as causing us to put on weight, this surge in insulin often makes our blood sugar level drop too low, causing cravings for yet another boost of sugar – and so the cycle continues.”

Stay physically active

“Staying active is also vital,” said Burns.

“Exercise helps the body respond to insulin, keep blood sugar levels down and manage your weight.

“You can get the greatest benefits by including both aerobic exercise such as cycling, dancing or jogging and strength training with weights or bodyweight exercises.”

Workout out with a friend or partner could help to keep you motivated, she recommended.

Stop smoking

Smoking could increase your risk of developing diabetes, according to Diabetes.co.uk.

It also increases the risk of diabetic complications, including heart disease, strokes and circulation problems.

“Smoking is proven to be a risk factor for insulin resistance,” said the medical website.

“Patients who are insulin resistant cannot use their bodily insulin properly. Insulin resistance often leads to diabetes.”

Cut back on alcohol

Alcohol can lower the body’s sensitivity to insulin, potentially leading to type 2 diabetes, said DrinkAware.

Alcohol also contains a large amount of calories, which could contribute to weight gain, and subsequently diabetes.

‘There are no unemployed people in the UK’: Chancellor makes spectacular gaffe on air (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/there-are-no-unemployed-people-in-the-uk-chancellor-makes-spectacular-gaffe-on-air-video/ https://briefnews.eu/there-are-no-unemployed-people-in-the-uk-chancellor-makes-spectacular-gaffe-on-air-video/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 15:35:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/there-are-no-unemployed-people-in-the-uk-chancellor-makes-spectacular-gaffe-on-air-video/

As the Tory party struggles to put out the fires from multiple public gaffes ahead of this week’s budget, Chancellor Philip Hammond has claimed “there are no unemployed people in the UK.”

In a discussion on BBC’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, Hammond tried to draw comparisons with the IT revolution of the 80s and 90s when discussing the potential impact of driverless cars on British employment in the future.

“It’s a simple choice: either we embrace change or we try to hide from change and we allow ourselves to slip behind,” he said. “I remember 20 years ago we were worried about what would happen to a million shorthand typists in Britain as the personal computer took over. Nobody has a shorthand typist these days.”

“Where are all these unemployed people? There are no unemployed people. We have created 3.5 million jobs since 2010. This economy has become a jobs factory.”

According to official statistics, however, there are approximately 1.42 million unemployed people in Britain, with many more struggling to work enough hours to support themselves.

Hammond faces a difficult budget on Wednesday as economic forecasts for a post-Brexit UK take a darker and darker turn. The Chancellor is also under fire from within his own party, much the same as Prime Minister Theresa May, as many Brexiteers believe he’s not fully committed to leaving the EU.

Earlier in the week, Nick Timothy, May’s former chief of staff, described Hammond as politically tone deaf and bereft of any desire to change people’s lives for the better, reports The Times. Hammond addressed these comments by saying, “Nobody would be in politics if they didn’t have a desire to change people’s lives for the better,” as cited by The Guardian.

Hammond later told ITV’s Peston On Sunday: “Of course I didn’t mean [there is no unemployment]. There’s 1.4 million unemployed people in this country and that’s 1.4 million too many. But we have record low levels of unemployment. It hasn’t been this low since the 1970s.”

Reaction from his counterparts in the Labour Party was understandably one of outrage and derision.

Twitter suspends RT’s ‘UK Embassy’ account created for historical project after London complains https://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/ https://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 15:23:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/twitter-suspends-rts-uk-embassy-account-created-for-historical-project-after-london-complains/ The UK Foreign Office is apparently so concerned with protecting its brand that it asked Twitter to suspend an RT account which reports what London diplomats had to say about Russia back in 1917 as part of a historical reenactment.

The account in question was created as part of RT’s 1917LIVE project, which gives people the chance to experience the atmosphere of the Russian Empire as it was undergoing dramatic changes and eventual collapse a century ago.

Dozens of interconnected accounts named after historical figures like then-Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky or Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin tweet comments on the events of one hundred years ago.

The account @BritishEmb1917 spoke with the voice of the British diplomatic mission of the time. It was described as “the official Twitter account of the United Kingdom in the Russian Empire” and carried the official crest of the office.

Apparently, the initiative did not sit well with Britain’s current Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as it reported the account to Twitter as an imposter.

“We alerted Twitter to an unofficial account that was using HMG branding without consent,” an FCO spokesman said, The Guardian reports.

RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan reacted to the development by asking: “Whatever happened to my beloved English humor?”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange also drew attention to the suspension on his Twitter feed. “UK government gets Twitter to suspend RT account showing what the FCO was saying in 1917 about Russian revolution,” he tweeted.

Some historical figures of 1917LIVE offered their opinions of what had transpired. ‘General Brusilov’ remarked that the suspension called into question the UK’s commitment to its Entente ally Russia, especially after London rejected asylum to members of the deposed Romanov family. Aleksey Brusilov was a World War I commander in the Russian Army who was credited with one of the greatest feats in the war – the Brusilov offensive.

‘General Kornilov’ (another prominent Russian military commander and later a leader of the counter-Bolshevik ‘White Movement’) suggested that Twitter should instead suspend all Bolshevik propaganda and Vladimir Lenin himself. ‘Bolshevik Mikhailov’ praised Twitter for banning an “account of imperialist UK” while the ‘German Kaizer’ said the Second Reich’s victory over Russia on social media will be followed by a victory on the battlefield.

On a more serious note, head of RT Social Media Operations Ivor Crotty said the move by the FCO “to subvert the project, without ever contacting its creators” was “extremely disappointing.”

“When we created the accounts for 1917LIVE, including the 1917 UK Embassy in Russia account, they were white-listed, approved and given official status by Twitter,” he said, adding that the British Embassy was informed of the project beforehand and “showed no interest,” neither supporting it nor objecting to it.

“To take undisclosed action behind closed doors and seek the removal of an innocent Twitter account clearly recounting historic circumstances, are acts that are difficult to interpret as anything other than elitism and disdain for innovative attempts to build bridges, digital or otherwise,” Crotty said.

“We should all be disappointed by this – Russians, Brits and all with an interest in History.”

Twitter suspended the account on August 7, and neither the microblogging service nor the British Embassy in Moscow have so far provided the 1917LIVE project team comments on the situation.

The historical project was launched in February and has followed those turbulent times in Russia’s history, including the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and the failed attempts of the provisional government to stabilize the situation, with the Bolshevik uprising looming two months ahead.

1917LIVE has held online Q&A sessions with historical figures of the revolutionary year, livestreamed from fugitive Lenin’s hideout, and showed how children perceived the historic events as they happened.

The fictional Russian Telegraph newspaper, which serves as the Twitter hub of the project, has almost 50,000 followers, while the entire community of 1917LIVE accounts has reached over 100,000. The project has drawn global attention from historians, political scientists, media professionals, and history buffs.

There is nothing worse than walking along a beach strewn with rubbish.

For any traveller looking for the perfect beach break in the UK this May bank holiday, then all has been revealed over which are the cleanest beaches.

Keep Britain Tidy researched all of the beaches throughout the UK to celebrate 30 years of monitoring them all.

Only the cleanest and the safest beach is then awarded a Blue Flag, which also means it gets high environmental standards both on land and in the water.

Cornwall boasted the highest amount of winning beaches with seven Blue Flag beaches including Porthminster and Trevone Bay.

Popular beaches at Whitby and Blackpool also made the list, as did Bournemouth and Brighton which is great news for holidayers this bank holiday weekend.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton commented on the proud results.

“It is great news for holiday-makers, overseas visitors and businesses that rely on coastal tourism that we have been able to award so many flags this year. “

However, it has recently emerged that 20 beaches failed to be found safe to swim in the UK according to European Environmental Agency.

They were only beaten to the bottom by Ireland who had a higher proportion of dirty beaches.

Whilst 96.4 per cent showed to be safe to swim in, some beaches including at Scarborough South Bay, North Yorkshire and Burnham Jetty North, Somerset.

To be regarded as unsafe, the samples taken include levels of sewage and animal contamination.
