The three UCLA basketball players arrested in China and charged with shoplifting, have returned to the United States.

The trio escaped a potentially major punishment in China with some help from President Donald Trump. But now they are still waiting to find out the extent of punishment they will receive from the school, and it sounds like it could be lengthy.

According to Arash Markazi of ESPN, UCLA is weighing suspensions that range from a half-season up to the entire season. To make matters more complicated, “major donors” have called the school to give their thoughts on the matter.

“Sources told ESPN that university officials are debating whether to suspend LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill anywhere from half of the season up to the full season. Multiple major donors have called the school with their thoughts on the situation, according to sources.”

It is unclear if the donors are angling for longer suspensions to send a message, short suspensions to protect the team’s hopes this season, or a mixture of both. 

As Markazi notes, one factor UCLA must consider is that if the players are suspended for an entire year, one or more of the players could choose to transfer.

The three players held a press conference late Wednesday morning in which they spoke about the incident publicly for the first time. All three players thanked several people, including Trump.

The three players were expected to remain in their hotel in China for up to two weeks as they waited for their case to be resolved. They were sent home, however, shortly after Trump made a personal plea to President Xi Jinping of China to assist in the case.

Three UCLA basketball players, including LiAngelo Ball, the brother of NBA star Lonzo Ball, “are set to leave China” after being detained on shoplifting charges, according to reports Tuesday morning.

News of the players’ pending release comes two days after President Donald Trump made a personal plea to President Xi Jinping of China to assist in the case. 

The three freshman players — Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill — were arrested last week during the Bruins’ trip to China to open the season against Georgia Tech. The players were charged with shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store. David Nakamura and Tim Bontemps of The Washington Post reported that the initial chargers were later reduced. However, the players were ordered to remain in their hotel until the case was resolved.

Trump confirmed that he had spoken to Xi about the players, saying he was “terrific,” but also noting the seriousness of what the situation. 

“I had a great conversation with President Xi,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One prior to the report that the players were being sent home. “What they did was unfortunate. You know, you’re talking about very long prison sentences. They do not play games.”

Trump also said that what the players had done was “something that should not have happened.”

“President Xi has been terrific on that subject,” Trump said. “But that was not a good subject. That was not something that should have happened.”

President Trump has asked his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, for help regarding the case of UCLA basketball players LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill. The players were arrested last week and charged with shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store located next to the team’s hotel.

According to David Nakamura of the Washington Post, Trump made the appeal during his two-day visit to Beijing, just a day after the arrests.

The UCLA Bruins were in China to open the NCAA basketball season against Georgia Tech in Shanghai. The story made headlines not only for its peculiarity, but also because of the involvement of LiAngelo Ball, the second-oldest son of LaVar Ball and brother of Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball.

The rest of the UCLA team has since returned stateside, but Ball, Riley, and Hill were ordered to remain in Hangzhou for “a week or two” according to ESPN’s Arash Markazi, as police review surveillance footage of the matter.

After Trump brought up the players’ arrests, Xi said he would look into the case, and ensured that the three would be treated fairly. The Washington Post also reported that charges against the players have been reduced and the case is nearing a resolution.

Lonzo Ball, said on Saturday that his father called him on Friday to say that the family is staying in China as the case plays out and that “we are handling it out here, so that’s a good sign.”

ESPN analyst and former NBA coach Jeff Van Gundy criticized the NCAA on Wednesday for what he called the “nonsense” of sending student-athletes to China.

The comments came after three UCLA basketball players, including LiAngelo Ball, were arrested on charges of shoplifting over an alleged theft at a Louis Vuitton store in China.

The three students were reportedly released on bail but were ordered to stay at the team’s hotel until the legal process concludes.

During the Golden State Warriors’ 125-101 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, Van Gundy questioned why the teams were in China in the first place.

“Why is UCLA and Georgia Tech in China to play a basketball game?” Van Gundy said. “Missing all that school, and then force-feeding their fans the idea of ‘student-athletes.’ If it’s such a cultural excursion, what is UCLA doing in the Louis Vuitton sunglass section? They can do that in Beverly Hills. You’re in charge of that league, I’ll tell you what the answer is: money. They are trying to sell something to get more money.”

Van Gundy added: “Stop the nonsense about ‘student-athlete.’ And I know they have tutors on there, and all that. You’re always going to get fed the same lines.”

William Nee, a Hong Kong-based legal expert, told Yahoo that it’s rare for people to get American-style bail, which could be a good sign for the players. However, Chinese law enforcement is also unlikely to just let them off the hook simply because they’re foreigners.

“If it’s a cultural excursion, why aren’t they doing something cultural?” Van Gundy said. “You can shop anywhere.”

Ball was in China with the Bruins as the team prepared to open the NCAA basketball season against Georgia Tech on Friday in Shanghai.

Ball, along with UCLA teammates and fellow freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill, were reportedly questioned about a theft at a Louis Vuitton store located next to the team’s hotel.

UCLA released a statement on the incident, saying “We are aware of a situation involving UCLA student-athletes in Hangzhou, China. The University is cooperating fully with local authorities on this matter, and we have no further comment at this time.”

Three players from Georgia Tech were also questioned by police regarding the matter, but were later cleared of any wrongdoing, according to the school.

“During the questioning, it was determined that Georgia Tech student-athletes were not involved in the activities being investigated,” Georgia Tech said in the statement. “They have resumed their scheduled activities in advance of Saturday’s season opener versus UCLA in Shanghai.”
