  • Unlike the banks at the center of the 2009 financial crisis, the internet companies did not consciously create a toxic product with a purely financial motive.
  • But the system these internet giants created allowed a toxic byproduct to spread, while they largely looked the other way and went about their business.

Tell me if this story sounds familiar: A group of companies make gobs of money, enjoying all the benefits of an all-too-trusting system.

Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey is reportedly getting more personally involved with blocking controversial accounts on the platform, a departure from an earlier, long-held ethos that the company is the “free speech wing of the free speech party.”

According to Fast Company, citing Twitter insiders and former employees, Dorsey had a say in booting conspiracy theorist and lobbyist Roger Stone from the platform.

  • Human rights watchdog Amnesty International has launched Troll Patrol, a project that will assign digital volunteers to analyze abusive tweets aimed at women on Twitter.
  • The project follows Amnesty’s #ToxicTwitter report, which detailed the results of a 16-month long investigation into how harassers and abusers target women on the social media platform.
  • The goal of the project is to provide data to Amnesty researchers to develop an algorithm that can be used to automatically detect abusive tweets, putting pressure on Twitter to up its game.

Amnesty International is taking it upon itself to help police harassment on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the human rights organization commenced with Troll Patrol,” a project which will recruit volunteers to find and analyze potentially abusive tweets directed at female journalists, activists and politicians.

Twitter shares rallied Wednesday, gaining 4.37% to $ 37.72 apiece, despite weakness in the tech-heavy Nasdaq. 

Twitter, like Facebook and Snap, has received negative attention regarding its platform recently. Shares sank more than 10% Tuesday after Bloomberg reported the Israeli government lashed out at the social media company for ignoring its requests to take down content that suggested violence towards the state.

Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said Twitter has been ignoring Israeli government requests to remove content that suggests violence towards the state, brought on by the US’s plan to move its embassy to Jerusalem, according to the Bloomberg report.

There’s an Apple software bug currently affecting iPhones, iPads, and Macs — and some pranksters are taking advantage of it.

The bug means a keyboard character from the Indian language Telugu can crash applications as soon as it shows up in a text field.

As Mashable first reported, a number of Twitter users are intentionally posting the Telugu character in hope that it will show up in some people’s timelines, and crash their device whether they see it intentionally or by accident.
