Unravel Two is the follow-up to 2016’s Unravel, the first indie game published under EA’s Originals brand — and it is just as adorable and emotionally powerful as the original. Unravel Two stars Yarny, the same anthropomorphized ball of red yarn that carried players through the first game, and it adds a second, blue Yarny, instantly upping the cute factor 100 percent.

Using the strings hanging from their bottoms (See? Absolutely adorable), Yarny and its blue buddy traverse beautiful, sidescrolling 3D landscapes of jagged rocks, busted logs, smoldering forest floors, clear waters and dangerous animals. They swing from branches and wall-jump up the crevasses between rocks, helping each other along the way. The characters can swing from each other, climb up one another’s strings, and even tie those strings together to create a thin trampoline that boosts them up the level.

The cooperative aspect of Unravel Two is new, but it doesn’t require two players to actually work. The entire game is playable solo, with one person alternating between the blue and red Yarny to solve spatial puzzles. The two characters can also combine into one blue-and-red-streaked Yarny. This control scheme is crucial, especially because Unravel Two isn’t an online co-op game — it’s local only. Fostering in-person gaming relationships was important to Unravel developers at Coldwood Interactive, an independent studio based in Sweden. After all, the Unravel series is all about the power of connection.

“We were slightly overwhelmed by the feedback that we got about this kind of emotional game,” technical director Jakob Marklund said during an Unravel Two gameplay demo at E3 2018. “And we got some criticism for things, but I think it was quite fair in the reviews. We didn’t do everything perfectly, but hopefully we have fixed some of these things in this game.”

“With EA, we have plenty of time.”

Marklund will know soon if Coldwood succeeded — Unravel Two is available right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, following its surprise announcement at EA’s E3 press conference. Under the EA Originals program, Coldwood receives funding, publishing and a marketing boost from EA, which then takes a bit of the game’s profits in a revenue-sharing model. Before working with EA, Coldwood developers were living a rougher indie life, pressed to churn out a game every year just to stay sustainable. But Marklund says that with EA’s help, the team is free to focus on building bigger games with longer development timelines.

“With EA, we have plenty of time,” Marklund says. “So it’s a completely other world for us.”

EA doesn’t impose any creative restrictions on Coldwood, either.

“We are totally free to do the game that we want, but they give us really good feedback all the time,” he says. So in that sense it’s just a perfect situation for us. We can do whatever we want.”

Sony’s annual fan event, the PlayStation Experience, is right around the corner, and it looks like a big reveal is in store for PlayStation VR (PSVR).

This week the company revealed the panels that will run throughout the show, and PSVR is kicking things off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 9. There, Sony will host a “PlayStation VR Game Panel,” but the description suggests something big is going to be revealed beforehand.

“We can’t wait to tell you more about this one!” the text reads. “Experience a candid conversation between two legends as they discuss developing their new PS VR title and lessons from VR development.”

The secrecy around the game and the developers suggests that this is an unrevealed title that could well be shown off at Sony’s media briefing that will kick off the show on 8 p.m. Pacific Friday.

What could this mysterious game be and, more excitingly, who are the ‘legends’ making it? PSVR owners have it pretty good right now with the release of Skyrim VR; could this title be the next big game on the horizon for the headset?

Mexico is a country with a booming, high-value manufacturing sector and sophisticated business class a booming, high-value manufacturing sector and sophisticated business class. But it’s also a country with extreme poverty and dependence on subsistence farming in some areas.

These extremes gave rise to the phrase “Two Mexicos” —and raise questions about the role of geopolitics in Mexico’s development.

Mexico’s Disparity Originates in Geopolitics

The disparity found within a dual economy is often not a temporary phenomenon or transitional economic phase. It’s an enduring quality born of geopolitics. This holds true for Mexico, too.

The country has struggled with economic inequality since it was a Spanish colony in the 1520s.

After the Mexican revolution and the following reconstruction, Mexican governments more openly acknowledged their country’s discrepancies, enacting policy reforms meant to harmonize the economy’s most important areas: land ownership, social welfare, infrastructure development, and industrial development.

Sometimes these measures were successful, but they never fully reconciled the differences between the Two Mexicos.

The Two Mexicos Are Not Just Economically Divided

There’s also a geographic division.

Central and northern states typically boast more dynamic, advanced economies. Infrastructure networks—roads, electricity, telecommunication, etc.—are well developed and incorporate large portions of the population.

The workforce in these states is generally higher educated, relies on formal employment, and receives comparatively higher wages. Those in poor, southern states have limited access to education, are often informally employed, and are paid lower wages, generally in low-value manufacturing and subsistence farming.

A look at formal employment figures and household incomes shows how the economic activities endemic to each region contribute to economic disparity.

Informal employment in Mexico is high—in August 2017, 56.9% of the workforce held informal jobs. However, the difference in economic activity makes informal employment much more common in the South than it is in the North.

Drastic differences are also observed on the state level. Mexican states along the US border account for nearly a quarter of the country’s GDP.

Powerless Against Geography

One of the reasons the Mexican government has never been able to reconcile the differences between Two Mexicos is that no government can reconcile a country’s geographic features.

The dynamics and disparities observed in the Mexican economy today stem from geopolitical factors that have molded Mexico’s economic development. On multiple occasions, developing the central and northern states of Mexico, as opposed to the southern states, was essential to fulfill geopolitical imperatives.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

Here’s an intriguing trailer for a new documentary about Lady Gaga that Netflix is releasing later this month. But instead of just being a concert film like their Justin Timberlake doc from last year, this one looks like more of a behind-the-scenes piece that follows the artist all over the place as she gears up for a major show. The best part about this trailer is the way it’s cut almost like a horror movie, with tons of disconnected imagery and a surreal score. I wouldn’t really call myself a Lady Gaga fan, but after watching this trailer, now I’m interested in seeing what this doc has to offer.

The Foreigner

Have you been wondering what Martin Campbell, the director of Goldeneye and Casino Royale, has been up to lately? Wonder no more! He’s been behind the camera of a new revenge film starring Jackie Chan and former Bond Pierce Brosnan, and while this looks a little cheesy and formulaic, the combination of talent involved all but assures that I’ll be checking this out at some point.

The Foreigner arrives in theaters on October 13, 2017.

The Opera House

Firstshowing points us to the trailer for The Opera House, a documentary about New York City’s famed Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center that will play at this year’s New York Film Festival. While I’m sure it’ll play well for the NYC crowd who could to walk past that building every day and actually go there regularly, I’m not sure how well something like this will do in the wider world. But for a doc about the making of an opera house, at least it looks like there’s a compelling narrative underneath the glitz and glamor.

My Little Pony: The Movie

What if I told you that Emily Blunt, Michael Pena, Zoe Saldana, Uzo Aduba, Taye Diggs, Liev Schreiber, Kristin Chenoweth, and Sia were all in the same movie, and it was coming out this year? Well, now you’d know that movie is My Little Pony: The Movie, which looks like a throwback to the adventure-driven animated films of my youth, only…you know…pony-fied.

My Little Pony: The Movie bursts into theaters on October 6, 2017.

Even though the It sequel still hasn’t been given the official greenlight, Andy Muschietti‘s adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel absolutely crushed the box office during its opening weekend, so it’s only a matter of time until the studio stakes out some ground on the calendar for It: Chapter Two. A writer is already working on the screenplay for the sequel, and now we have some details about a significant change the follow-up will make to one of the members of the Losers’ Club, the group of kids who serve as the protagonists in the first film and will reunite as adults in the second.

The version of Mike Hanlon we’ll see in It: Chapter Two will be very different from the one we just met in this new film, and he’ll even be considerably altered from the character that appeared in King’s original novel.

We’ll have a much more in-depth article on the site tomorrow about everything we know about the upcoming sequel, but for now, let’s concentrate on Entertainment Weekly’s report about how Mike Hanlon, the character played by Chosen Jacobs in Muschietti’s It, will be different moving forward.

The Source Material

In King’s novel, Mike is the only member of the Losers’ Club to stay behind in Derry, Maine while the rest of his friends move away and live their lives. Mike becomes the librarian and unearths the terrifying history of It and Pennywise by interviewing some of Derry’s oldest residents who recount incidents from years earlier. But in Muschietti’s sequel, Mike will be mentally and physically weakened by the time his friends return to the town because of what he knows.

“My idea of Mike in the second movie is quite darker from the book,” the filmmaker said. “I want to make his character the one pivotal character who brings them all together, but staying in Derry took a toll with him. I want him to be a junkie actually. A librarian junkie. When the second movie starts, he’s a wreck.”

“He’s not just the collector of knowledge of what Pennywise has been doing in Derry. He will bear the role of trying to figure out how to defeat him. The only way he can do that is to take drugs and alter his mind.”

One part of the book that didn’t make it into the movie (among many others) involves the Losers building an underground clubhouse in the Barrens. They participatie in the “Smoke Hole Ceremony,” in which they close themselves into their clubhouse and start a fire inside, with a small hole for it to escape through the ceiling. Inhaling the smoke gives them visions, and the ones who can stand the heat the longest are suddenly transported back to millions of years in Derry’s past and witness the first coming of It as the entity arrived on Earth from somewhere far beyond the reaches of space. Here’s how the kids describe it in the book:

“It came from out of the sky,” Mike repeated, “but it wasn’t a spaceship, exactly. It wasn’t a meteor, either. It was more like…well…like the Ark of the Covenant, in the Bible, that was supposed to have the Spirit of God inside of it…except this wasn’t God. Just feeling It, watching It come, you knew It meant bad, that It was bad.”

He looked at them.

Richie nodded. “It came from…outside. I got that feeling. From outside.”

“Outside where, Richie?” Eddie asked.

“Outside everything,” Richie said. “And when it came down…It made the biggest damn hole you ever saw in your life. It turned this big hill into a doughnut, just about. It landed right where the downtown part of Derry is now.”

How Mike Will Be Different in It: Chapter Two

Instead of including that Smokehouse sequence in the first movie, Muschietti says the adult Mike’s drug trips will achieve the same result:

“It resonates with what the kids do when they go to the smokehouse in the Barrens,” Andy Muschietti says. “By inhaling these fumes from the fire they have visions of It, and the origin of It, and the falling fire in the sky that crashed into Derry millions of years ago. We’ve brought that to Mike, by the end of those 30 years Mike has figured out the Ritual of Chüd.”

That otherworldly ritual is an essential part of the confrontations against It (aka Pennywise), and since we know the second movie will explore the novel’s more “transdimensional” elements, we’ll presumably get to see Mike’s vision and a much weirder confrontation with It during the second film’s climax.

A survey found more than two thirds of UK mothers-to-be have no idea how many extra calories they need during pregnancy. 

Nearly two-thirds felt under pressure to eat larger meals. 

Alex Davis, from the National Charity Partnership, which commissioned the poll, said: “Eating healthily and consuming healthy portion sizes are important before, during and after pregnancy to increase the chances of conceiving naturally, reduce the risk of pregnancy and birthrelated complications and stave off health problems like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.” 

Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence say women do not need any extra calories in the first six months of pregnancy. 

A total of 2,100 women took part in the survey, with 85 per cent saying they did not know how many extra calories to consume during pregnancy. 

More than a third thought they needed to eat 300 extra calories per day.

Ben Carson clarified statements he made on Monday in which he seemed to describe African slaves as immigrants.

In a statement issued Monday night on his Facebook page, Carson said: “The slave narrative and immigrant narrative are two entirely different experiences. Slaves were ripped from their families and their homes and forced against their will after being sold into slavery by slave traders.”

During a speech earlier Monday, the newly minted Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary appeared to refer to slaves as “immigrants” in an address to department employees on Monday that often veered off-topic.

The original speech transcription read:

“There were immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder, for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

Carson’s original comments were widely rebuked. Some critics accused him of trying to dismiss the undisputed history of slavery in America.
