Amazon hires unsafe trucking firms twice as often as peers, WSJ finds

For years, people in cars stuck behind blue delivery trucks in traffic have echoed media reports criticizing Amazon for clogging American roadways. It’s well-known that the Amazon drivers steering these fleets of trucks and vans don’t actually work for Amazon but are hired by companies contracted by Amazon, and Amazon has repeatedly denied liability for any dangerous driving reported, though.

Because Amazon has contracts with more than 50,000 firms, just how dangerous Amazon’s contracted drivers really are remains a question that is hard to track. However, The Information reported last year that horrific car crashes are part and parcel of Amazon’s culture of convenience. And then more recently, The Wall Street Journal provided another window into how deadly America’s favorite speedy delivery service can be. Since 2015, WSJ reported this week, “Trucking companies hauling freight for Amazon have been involved in crashes that killed more than 75 people.”

To arrive at this number, WSJ partnered with Jason Miller—a Michigan State University professor who researches transportation safety—to analyze various sources of government data from “3,512 trucking companies that were inspected by authorities three or more times while hauling trailers for Amazon since February 2020.”

The Apple Watch SE 2 is making me think twice about the Watch Series 8 https://briefnews.eu/the-apple-watch-se-2-is-making-me-think-twice-about-the-watch-series-8/ https://briefnews.eu/the-apple-watch-se-2-is-making-me-think-twice-about-the-watch-series-8/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 17:41:08 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-apple-watch-se-2-is-making-me-think-twice-about-the-watch-series-8/ It’s easy to dismiss the Apple Watch SE 2 as the “lesser” Apple Watch, purchased only by those watching the bottom line. The Apple Watch Series 8 (or even the Apple Watch Ultra) is the one to buy, right? Sorry, but this is completely the wrong way to look at it.

Living with the Apple Watch SE 2nd generation made me realize it should be the default, go-to Apple smartwatch, and only then should you consider if you need the extra from the Series 8. It’s really that good, and here’s why.

Understanding the Apple Watch SE 2

I’m not reviewing the Apple Watch SE 2, so I’m not going into masses of detail about its specs or features — plus, I’ve only been wearing it for a few days. But I’m extremely familiar with the Apple Watch Series 7 and have worn the original Watch SE too, and this experience pretty much tells me what I need to know about the Watch SE 2’s value proposition. It also tells me who should be considering it, even without a few weeks with it on my wrist.

It’s not that the Apple Watch SE 2 is the perfect smartwatch, it’s just that many of the features that differentiate the Watch Series 8 from it aren’t going to be missed by a fairly large segment of people wanting to buy an Apple Watch. Well, apart from one feature, that is, but I’ll come back to that.

Initially, I thought I’d miss the larger screen area from the Series 7 and Series 8, as the SE 2 is based on the 44mm and 40mm case last seen on the Watch Series 6. But I haven’t so far! I prefer the greater expanse when I’m using the bigger Apple Watches, but the Watch SE 2 hasn’t felt constricted or “old” just because it doesn’t quite have the same visual punch as its more expensive sibling. It’s still gloriously sharp and colorful, and that’s what matters most.

Apple has used a new material for the case back on the SE 2. It’s nylon rather than ceramic found on the Series 8, and I was a little concerned it wouldn’t be as skin-friendly, and that it may get too sweaty. So far, neither issue has proven to be something to worry about. I’ve worn it overnight with no adverse reactions, and although it’s not as cool as ceramic against your wrist, it doesn’t seem to get hot or sweaty. It’s there to reduce the cost, and for once, it doesn’t cheapen the look or mean a compromise in comfort.

Do you need the added health features?

I know what you’re thinking now, what about the health and fitness features? There are three primary features missing from the Watch SE 2: blood oxygen sensing, an electrocardiogram, and a temperature sensor. These are great to have and open the Watch up to track more of your wellbeing — blood oxygen works with sleep tracking, and the temperature sensor for enhanced cycle tracking, for example — but everything still works without them, and really well, too.

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

I’ve never had the need (thankfully) to use the electrocardiogram outside of testing it for review purposes, cycle tracking isn’t relevant to me personally, and the Apple Watch isn’t the best device for sleep tracking regardless of its features due to a need to regularly charge the battery. The Apple Watch SE 2 still tracks workouts, has strong and reliable GPS, a heart rate sensor, and all the fitness apps I could want.

It comes with the new crash detection feature to go along with fall detection and noise monitoring. You also get irregular heart rate warnings, and the always-helpful hand-washing timer, too, so it’s not like you’ll personally be any less safe with the SE. You will be slightly less informed, data-wise, but you may look at the list above and question whether the additional features would be relevant to you on a regular basis. If they’re not, then the Apple Watch SE 2 maybe the better buy.

Plenty of power and battery life

If you do decide to order the Apple Watch SE 2 you can look forward to great battery life. Apple says you’ll get “up to 18 hours” with mixed use. For me, the Watch SE 2’s battery life has been better than that, reaching two full days with two tracked 30-minute workouts and a single night’s sleep tracked, too, along with the usual notifications and music control.

You won’t lose out on power either, as it has the same S8 processor as the Series 8 and Watch Ultra, and WatchOS 9 is excellent. It’s smooth when scrolling through the menus, and fast to open apps and show notifications in more detail. I haven’t noticed any performance differences switching from the Apple Watch Series 7 to the Watch SE 2, and suspect it will be the same when I move to the Apple Watch Series 8. This isn’t a criticism of either, as the Apple Watch in all its forms is the very best performing smartwatch you can buy.

The Apple Watch SE 2’s biggest drawback

What’s the one thing I miss that I referred to earlier? It’s the always-on screen. When the Apple Watch SE 2’s screen isn’t being used, it is a big, black expanse of nothing. This impacts functionality to a certain extent as you can’t see the time at a glance, but Apple’s wrist-raise gesture is flawless and goes some way to mitigating that, but it’s more from a watch fan’s perspective that its absence hurts.

I like wearing watches of all kinds, as much (if not more) for the design than any level of functionality. To wear one and for it not to show a watch face all the time is upsetting to me personally. Especially because Apple has opened up the fun Nike watch faces for everyone, which, when paired with the new Nike “Just Do It” Sport Loop band here, gives that cool Nike version look on an SE. The effect would be complete on a Watch Series 8 with its always-on screen.

It bothers me to the extent that I’d pay extra to get an Apple Watch Series 8, but if it doesn’t worry you, then the Apple Watch SE 2’s $ 299 starting price makes it a rarity: The perceived budget option in a product range being the best bet for a lot of people.

What these last few days have taught me is the Apple Watch SE 2 should really be your first stop when considering an Apple Watch, rather than considering the Watch Series 8 the default choice. Yes, the latter is technically superior, but really ask yourself whether those additional features will be important to you before buying one.

NASA confirmed Wednesday that it has awarded five additional crew transportation missions to SpaceX, and its Crew Dragon vehicle, to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station. This brings to 14 the total number of crewed missions that SpaceX is contracted to fly for NASA through 2030.

As previously reported by Ars, these are likely the final flights NASA needs to keep the space station fully occupied into the year 2030. While there are no international agreements yet signed, NASA has signaled that it would like to continue flying the orbiting laboratory until 2030, by which time one or more US commercial space stations should be operational in low Earth orbit.

Under the new agreement, SpaceX would fly 14 crewed missions to the station on Crew Dragon, and Boeing would fly six during the lifetime of the station. That would be enough to fill all of NASA’s needs, which include two launches a year, carrying four astronauts each. But NASA has an option to buy more seats from either provider.

Dec explained: “It was tough, doing three hours of live telly, we were absolutely getting hammered in the ratings and the shows weren’t great.

“It was a struggle to get any guests, they all went on the BBC. We needed to put in more and more effort.”

And hosts spoke of the lightbulb moment they had when doing Christmas panto in front of hundreds of kids, leading them to bring in a live audience every weekend.

“The minute we brought kids into the studio everything lifted! The minute you can interact with real-life people makes everything better,” Cat said.

This Morning star to undergo bowel cancer surgery after being misdiagnosed twice https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-star-to-undergo-bowel-cancer-surgery-after-being-misdiagnosed-twice/ https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-star-to-undergo-bowel-cancer-surgery-after-being-misdiagnosed-twice/#respond Wed, 16 Sep 2020 18:41:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/this-morning-star-to-undergo-bowel-cancer-surgery-after-being-misdiagnosed-twice/

The This Morning resident doctor opened up about being diagnosed with bowel cancer, explaining she is set to have more treatment this week. Dr Philippa told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she thought she was “too young” to have the disease after she was diagnosed at the age of 39.

She urged This Morning viewers not to put off going to the doctor if they have symptoms as it was important to be sure.

Speaking of her own diagnosis, Dr Philippa said: “When you’re young and even as a doctor, you think ‘This cannot be cancer.’

“I had had three emergency caesarean sections and I had some pain in my pelvis and assumed it was down to scar tissue and so did my GP.

“I was 39 and I then went to a gynecologist who also thought it was scar tissue, but when you get scar tissue in your pelvis you should go to a bowel surgeon.

“I have kept this part of my life private.m not a secret, but private until I felt ready and able to discuss it and raise awareness around all cancers and the experience of being a young adult and a Dr with cancer.

“1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives but this much feared diagnosis does not have to mean game over!

“Most people with cancer will be treatable and even those people with incurable cancer are living with their cancer rather than dying from it than ever.

“Please don’t put off going to the Dr if you have symptoms, the earlier we catch it the better and easier it is to treat!

“But I understand to your point that rap stars and the black youths have almost taken that word and turned it on its head and used it in either as friends do to each other.”

Taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “@liameley9  Dr Shola dropping the N bomb twice on @GMB this morning @piersmorgan not picking up on it either  #gmb.”

“Racial slurs with your cornflakes, only on ITV #GMB,” someone else remarked.

Microsoft unveils HoloLens 2: twice the field of view, eye tracking https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-unveils-hololens-2-twice-the-field-of-view-eye-tracking/ https://briefnews.eu/microsoft-unveils-hololens-2-twice-the-field-of-view-eye-tracking/#respond Sun, 24 Feb 2019 18:43:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/microsoft-unveils-hololens-2-twice-the-field-of-view-eye-tracking/

As expected, Microsoft today launched HoloLens 2, the company’s second generation augmented reality (AR) headset. The new hardware addresses what were probably the two biggest issues with the first generation device: the narrow field of view, and the comfort when wearing the device.

Microsoft says that the field of view has been doubled, without any reduction in visual quality. Both first and second generation devices aim to produce around 47 pixels per degree. This resolution is around the limit of human visual acuity (the Varjo VR-1 headset also aims at around this level, though it offers 60 pixels per degree), such that individual pixels can’t be discerned, and curves look smooth even without extensive anti-aliasing. Each eye has about a 2,000×1,500 display, so while Microsoft doesn’t seem to include an actual field of view measure on its spec sheet, that comes out at around a 53 degree (diagonal) field of view.

Details of the new display system were lacking, but it appears to be a Microsoft-designed, custom-built MEMS (microelectromechanical system) display, with a tiny little electromechanical mirror used to bounce laser light around.

Bird Box on Netflix showed the monsters TWICE: Did you spot THIS? https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-on-netflix-showed-the-monsters-twice-did-you-spot-this/ https://briefnews.eu/bird-box-on-netflix-showed-the-monsters-twice-did-you-spot-this/#respond Sun, 30 Dec 2018 05:06:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bird-box-on-netflix-showed-the-monsters-twice-did-you-spot-this/

The simplest ideas are always the most effective. Earlier this year A Quiet Place set up the terrifying world where the slightest noise would bring death. Bird Box has been a massive hit on Netflix as Sandra Bullock’s Malorie fights to save herself and two children in a world where the slightest glimpse of a monster causes almost everyone to commit suicide. The movie makes a virtue of never revealing the monsters. Except, there are actually two separate brief scenes where the monsters are shown. Did you spot them?

The film’s director previously explained why viewers never get a clear look at the monsters.

She said: “I pretty much feel that with creature movies – and they can be amazing, I recognize they are amazing – but there’s always a part of me that goes, ‘I’m not scared now. I’ve seen it.’”

The filmmakers originally created a scene where Malorie confront one of the monsters directly, but it was scrapped for a variety of reasons.

However, at two separate points in Bird Box, the monsters are shown.

The first is a chilling moment when one of the monsters goes past the house where Malorie and others are hiding. All that is shown ins a silhouette.

The second look is courtesy of Tom Hollander’s creepy Gary. His character reveals that it is possible to survive seeing the creatures, but only if you are insane.

Gary has drawn the monsters over and over, and a sharp-eyed viewer screengrabbed the brief glimpse of the black and white sketches piled up on a table.

They look like the typical monster alien seen so many times on screen with two large black eyes and tentacles coming out of their mouths.

Of course, that is the point. The monsters show their victims their greatest fears, so it is logical they would apear to Gary like the stereotypical evil alien from popular culture.

Biere explained further: “Whatever those beings are, they tap into your deepest fear. Everybody’s deepest fear is going to be different from the other person. I think to suddenly take upon a concrete shape in order to illustrate that becomes weak. Where the conceit is really strong, then trying to illustrate it is kind of almost meaningless. So it would have been the wrong decision.”

Tyson Fury FLOORED by Deontay Wilder TWICE with rematch on cards after controversial DRAW https://briefnews.eu/tyson-fury-floored-by-deontay-wilder-twice-with-rematch-on-cards-after-controversial-draw/ https://briefnews.eu/tyson-fury-floored-by-deontay-wilder-twice-with-rematch-on-cards-after-controversial-draw/#respond Sun, 02 Dec 2018 10:57:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tyson-fury-floored-by-deontay-wilder-twice-with-rematch-on-cards-after-controversial-draw/

Wilder downed Fury in the ninth round of their heavyweight contest at the Staples Center in the early hours of Sunday morning.

And the American put Fury to the canvas in the 12th too – before Fury heroically got back to his feet to soldier on.

To that point, Fury had appeared to dominate but Wilder’s dramatic late surge looked to have stolen it.

Except Fury had other ideas. The man who says he has made the ‘greatest comeback ever’ in even making it to the ring refused to throw in the towel as he battled it through to the bell.

Once the 12th was over, Fury stomed round the ring in celebration in a clear sign he felt he had won. Wilder, meanwhile, barely let out a whimper.

Fury kissed his opponent and told him he ‘loved him’ in emotional scenes between two men who have all the respect in the world for one another.

There were moments of confusion with scorecards being handed back and forth with the verdict clearly a close one.

It was then it was announced as a draw, with the first judge giving it 115-111 to Wilder, the second one as 114-112 to Fury and the third judge Phil Edwards of England calling it 113-113.

It means the two are now set for a dramatic rematch – possibly in America – for what many are dubbing ‘the greatest fight ever’.

Wilder, however, was adamant he won the fight: “With the two knockdowns I definitely won. I don’t think he had control.

“I wasn’t hurt. I did not sit still, I was too hesitant, I started overthrowing the right hand. I was forcing my punches too much.

“I don’t know if it (a rematch) will be my next fight but would love it to be. We need to do it again.”

While Fury vowed to fight Wilder again: “We’re on away soil, I got knocked down but I still believe I won the fight. I’m showing total professionalism. Thank you for the opportunity D, God bless you.

“The Gypsy King has returned. God bless America. I’m a professional athlete who loves to fight. He is a fearsome fighter. The world knows the truth. Thank you to every fan around the world.

“I’m a fighting man and Jesus has his control over me so I was never going to get knocked out. I came here tonight and fought my heart out. That is the second best heavyweight apart from me. We are both going home to our family safe.

“I’ve been away from my family for 10 weeks and just want to spend some time with them over Christmas.”

On a rematch, Fury said: “One hundred per cent we will do the rematch. We’re the best two heavyweights in the planet. There is another heavyweight who is a chicken. (Anthony) Joshua where are you?”

But Fury’s trainer Ben Davison was left furious at the decision and fumed: “They have just taken away the biggest comeback in sports history. You have to be a sick, sick man to do that.

“I told Tyson before the fight he would beat him with his left hand. We didn’t come here for money to get through the fight we came here to win and I’m sick and gutted. Deontay is a very dangerous opponent after the 12 months we have had we need a break.”

Promoter Frank Warren was adamant that Fury won it by three rounds – even if he was surprised Fury returned to his feet after the 12th-round trip to the canvas.

“I thought he (Fury) had won it by three rounds,” Warren told BT Sport.

“When you think of what he has come from to be here. It is the art of hitting and not getting hit. I didn’t think he was going to get up (in the 12th) but at the end of the round he was pushing him back.

“It is a draw but everyone knows he won it and we will want to do a rematch. How could a fight like this not be a rematch? It is unfinished business. He won that. He won that fight and everyone knows it.

“In Britain that is an 80,000 job. Vegas will be drooling for this. When was the last time you saw a great fight in USA. Tyson and Deontay have livened up this decision. The best fought the best but it was not the best decision.”
