The pound is currently trading against the euro at £1.123, having fallen again from yesterday’s figures of £1.126. Following a tense meeting between EU chief Donald Tusk and Theresa May regarding post-Brexit plans, the exchange rate has suffered once again. The pair met yesterday to discuss the controversial EU document which outlines a hard border being in place for Northern Ireland. Theresa May has rejected the decision for fears it would divide the UK. Meeting in No 10 Downing Street, it follows from the leaked document yesterday that suggested Ireland could stay in the customs union when the UK leaves the EU. A Downing Street source told The Times yesterday: “We are fully committed to implementing the December agreement but the EU should be absolutely clear that the prime minister is not going to sign up to anything that threatens the constitutional integrity of the UK or its common market.” Donald Tusk suggested that the Prime Minister would need to tone down the EU red lines to get a good deal. He was heard saying he was “not happy” according to The Sun. Mr Tusk warned Theresa May that there could be “no frictionless trade outside of the customs union and the single market.” He advised: “Friction is an inevitable side-effect of Brexit by nature.” Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX explained the fall in the pound. She revealed: “The GBP/EUR exchange rate lost around a cent on Thursday following a frosty meeting between PM Theresa May and European Council President Donald Tusk. “The pound broadly softened after Tusk indicated that he’s unhappy with the Brexit ‘red line’ put forward by May. “The GBP/EUR exchange rate also came under pressure as the Eurozone’s unemployment rate declined. However, she explained how it could continue to fluctuate over the weekend. Ms Parsons said: “We could see further Sterling volatility before the weekend with Bank of England Governor Mark Carney delivering a speech and UK construction PMI being published.”
European Council President Donald Tusk says Theresa May’s proposals for the post-Brexit status of EU citizens living in Britain are “below expectations” and “risks worsening the situation of citizens.”
The prime minister said her plan would ensure that no one living lawfully in the UK will have to leave, and that EU nationals will not face the prospect of their families being split up.
Under her plan, EU nationals who have been in the UK for more than five years would be able to claim a new “settled status,” entitling them to the same rights as full British citizens to healthcare, education, welfare and pensions.
Those who have been in the UK for a shorter time would be able to stay until they hit the five-year threshold for settled status. Others who arrive after an unspecified cut-off date will be given a “grace period,” expected to be two years.
May said the 3 million EU citizens living in the UK should take “reassurance and confidence” from what she laid out at the European Council summit in Brussels on Thursday. She said although there are differences between the two sides, the UK was giving a “fair and serious” guarantee.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said it was a “first step, but not sufficient,” while the European Parliament’s Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt said: “May’s ‘generous offer’ does not fully guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was a “good start” but that there were many issues still to be resolved.
Tusk said the proposal was “below our expectations” and needed more detail. He said the EU wants to secure the “full rights” of all its citizens and British expats on the continent.
The EU will “analyze line by line” the UK’s proposals when they are published on Monday, Tusk said.
“My first impression is that the UK’s offer is below our expectations and that it risks worsening the situation of citizens,” he told reporters.
Joseph Muscat, the prime minister of Malta, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU, warned of the dangers of “pitfalls” in which people were “treated differently” depending on when they arrived in the UK.
“Everyone in Europe wants a situation where we have a blanket fair treatment of all our citizens.”
The EU has said the bloc’s citizens should continue to have the same rights as they do on a lifetime basis, enforceable by the European Court of Justice. The UK’s view is that British courts should have jurisdiction.
May said the issue would be one of the first to be discussed, and she wanted an agreement as soon as possible.

Melania Trump has always been a fan of fashion thanks to her days as a model and today she is showing off her fabulous figure in a nude belted suit.
The 47-year-old showed off her lithe figure in the fitted suit as she arrived at the Queen Fabiola Children’s University hospital in Brussels, Belgium today.
Walking side-by-side with another official, the First Lady looked deep in thought as she walked around the hospital.
The belted suit was paired with gold stilettos and a matching manicure – her hair slightly less wild than yesterday as she stepped off Air Force One.
While former reality TV star Donald is meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk, Melania is taking the opportunity to show her philanthropic side.
Yesterday, the First Lady stole the show as she and Donald were welcomed into Belguim.
As they stepped off Air Force One – the President’s official carrier jet – Melania’s hair took a dramatic turn, perhaps with a gust of European wind.
The mother-of-one is usually seen with perfectly coiffered hair, but this time it was larger than life with a huge bounce to it.
Stepping off the plane before her husband, Melania wore a stunning blue and white chequered coat with little else.
Showing off her tanned legs, she looked every inch a star as she walked down the private stairs at Brussels International Airport.

Brussels (AFP) – EU President Donald Tusk said Britain must first settle the key divorce issues of “people, money and Ireland” before any talks on a post-Brexit trade deal.
In a letter to leaders of the remaining 27 European Union countries ahead of a summit on Saturday, Tusk said that “before discussing our future, we must first sort out our past.”
Former Polish premier Tusk said the “only possible approach” was phased talks in which Britain must make “sufficient progress” on the divorce issues before talks on future relations.
Britain had wanted to discuss its divorce settlement with the bloc and a trade deal at the same time.
The EU says the key issues are: the fate of three million EU citizens living in Britain and one million Britons resident in the EU; Britain’s exit bill estimated at around €60 billion; and the fate of the border between Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland.
“This is not only a matter of tactics, but — given the limited time frame we have to conclude the talks — it is the only possible approach,” Tusk wrote to the leaders.
“I would like us to unite around this key principle during the upcoming summit, so that it is clear that progress on people, money and Ireland must come first,” he wrote. “And we have to be ready to defend this logic during the upcoming negotiations.”
His comments come a day after a war of words between British Prime Minister Theresa May and German Chancellor Angela Merkel over the two years of negotiations ahead of Britain’s exit from the EU in March 2019.
Merkel said Britain should not have “illusions” about getting favourable treatment, but May hit back by accusing the EU 27 of planning to “line up to oppose us.”
At Saturday’s summit, the EU 27 leaders are set to adopt guidelines for the negotiations on Brexit, following May’s formal triggering of the two-year divorce process last month.
They will also discuss whether to back automatic membership for Northern Ireland after Brexit if it ever reunifies with Ireland, an EU Council source told AFP. Ireland is expected to ask the 27 EU leaders to endorse that idea.
Britons voted to leave the EU in a closely-fought referendum in June 2016.

Barrow, 53, was appointed the role of Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the European Union in January 2017, and was described by Downing Street at the time as “a seasoned and tough negotiator, with extensive experience of securing UK objectives in Brussels.”
But was Barrow’s “tough” demeanour on show when he met with Donald Tusk?
And despite protestations by Tusk, 59, that he “missed the UK already”, what did he really think of Brexit?
Body language expert Darren Stanton gave his professional opinion of the secrets behind the handshakes to Express.co.uk.
Of the first image, Darren said: “We see Sir Tim Barrow handing over the letter to Mr Tusk.
“This is an interesting photo because both men are posing for a photo for the press but it’s clearly an awkward moment.
“I see that Sir Barrow’s right hand seems to be hovering as he deliberates what to do with it, this could be a combination of nervousness or anxiety or indeed just a moment in time caught by the camera.
“Either way it’s quite an odd gesture, generally denoting being uneasy in his surroundings.
“Mr Tusk looks as if he is being handed a writ as his facial expression shows the emotion of contempt.
“If you look closely at his mouth, his facial expression is not symmetrical. This is called a ‘bilateral’ gesture. When the mouth curls up on one side this is a gesture of contempt or moral superiority.
“Mr Tusk could be thinking how he is going to respond to the letter.”
Of the second image, Darren said: “Seeing both men engaged in a hand shake and adopting similar postures to each other, this is just going through the formalities for etiquette’s sake and does not reveal too much more in this photo.”
Darren said the body language in the third image, of the letter handover, is similar to that seen in the first photo.
Earlier this week, the body languge expert revealed insight into a meeting between Theresa May and Nichola Sturgeon.
The pair held critical talks in Glasgow about the Scottish independence referendum, and according to Darren, there was more than a little awkwardness.
He said: “A true smile would see certain muscles engaged on the face, however both women are faking a smile for the camera, as if being asked to say cheese whilst posing for a photo at an event you don’t want to be at.”
Brussels (AFP) – EU leaders are set to ignore bitter opposition from Warsaw and re-elect Poland’s Donald Tusk as the bloc’s president Thursday in a row that underscores the difficulties of post-Brexit unity.
A summit that was meant to focus on plans for the future after Britain leaves has instead become mired in a Polish political drama with wider implications for looming east-west splits in the European Union.
The row threatens to overshadow talks on the economy, defence, and unrest in the Balkans on Thursday, and then on Friday, without British Prime Minister Theresa May, on preparations for a summit in Rome on March 25th to mark the 60th anniversary of the EU’s founding treaty.

Leaders had hoped to rubberstamp former Polish prime minister Tusk’s new term after his current mandate runs out in May, but a government guided by his long-term domestic foe put forward a surprise rival candidate.
Poland appears to have won no support, but the other leaders will still be keen to avoid a public bust-up with the EU’s biggest post-communist state just weeks before the bloc enters its seventh decade.
Tusk said he was “ready for this judgement” by the 28 leaders but rejected criticism by Poland’s right-wing prime minister Beata Szydlo that he had “brutally violated” his job’s supposed political neutrality.
“I am not the one responsible (for the) clashes,” Tusk said on the eve of the summit in Brussels. “I am, and I should be also in the future, impartial and politically neutral.”
Poland’s eurosceptic government, which has repeatedly clashed with Brussels in recent months over the rule of law, on Saturday stunned the EU by nominating Euro-MP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski instead of Tusk.
Tusk has been a long-term foe of the head of the governing Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who has accused the centrist former premier among other things of “moral responsibility” for his twin brother’s death in a plane crash in Russia in 2010.
But Germany said on the eve of the summit there was “overwhelming support” for Tusk, while European diplomats accused the Polish government of “wanting to export an internal problem.”
“I hope we will find a choreography that will allow Mrs Szydlo to express her views without disturbing the process,” one diplomat said on condition of anonymity.
The Tusk issue nevertheless highlights a growing split between the older, western EU nations led by Germany and France and the poorer, newer countries in the east that used to be under the Soviet yoke.
Divisions have emerged over whether plans for a major declaration on the bloc’s next 10 years, to be made at the Rome summit, should include a mention of plans for a so-called “multi-speed Europe.”
The leaders of the EU’s post-Brexit “big four” — Germany, France, Italy and Spain — used a summit in Versailles on Monday to back plans for countries to choose at which speed they integrate on key issues.
But eastern countries in particular fear this will lead to a virtual apartheid system where they are left behind on issues like the euro currency, the economy and defence while the major powers push ahead.
There are also divisions over migration, with the eastern bloc fearing their attempts to offer to pay instead of sharing the burden of Europe’s migrant crisis could be used to cut the substantial funds they get from Brussels.
Leaders fear the split could distract from attempts to use Rome to give birth to a new Europe after Brexit, in the face of growing populism, uncertainty over US President Donald Trump and an aggressive Russia.
Tusk insisted on Wednesday that “the anniversary will be a moment for reflection and unity, but also a moment to set the direction of the EU for the decade to come.”
