Introduced in 2013, the GT hasn’t been the model’s most-coveted variant. Perhaps this explains why the German’s are so adverse to taking design risks. Defined as an “expanded take on the original […]

Sony
When Gran Turismo Sport arrived for the Playstation 4 at the end last year, I wrote that it was a great game. Any lingering problems I’d had with the way Polyphony Digital had been simulating tire physics disappeared, plus it looked and sounded better than any prior installment of the franchise. But it also wasn’t perfect, particularly for long-time fans of the series with little interest in racing other humans online.
Since the October launch, Polyphony Digital has been hard at work sending out regular updates, adding new tracks, new cars, and (perhaps most importantly for much of our audience) beefing up the single player mode. The latest of these updates was pushed out to PS4 consoles this morning, adding eight new cars and a new track. Among the additions are the 2017 championship-winning Mercedes AMG F1 car, the 1991 Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B, and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (serial number 3729GT for those who keep track). However, there is one tweak to the game that might enrage some: microtransactions.

https://briefnews.eu/porsche-mission-e-cross-turismo-how-porsche-shifted-with-the-market/
https://briefnews.eu/porsche-mission-e-cross-turismo-how-porsche-shifted-with-the-market/#respondThu, 08 Mar 2018 01:33:19 +0000http://briefnews.eu/porsche-mission-e-cross-turismo-how-porsche-shifted-with-the-market/
Porsche unveiled the next iteration of its Mission E pure battery-powered electric-vehicle platform in Geneva this week. But instead of being a low-slung sport sedan like the original Mission E introduced in Frankfurt in fall 2015, this Cross Turismo is more of a high-riding, long-roofed vehicle — not exactly an electric Cayenne, but more like a jacked-up version of a battery-powered Panamera Sport Turismo.
This makes sense. Even in the short period of time since the first reveal, the global market (and particularly the American and Chinese markets) for vehicles has shifted from sedans to crossovers at a rather astonishing rate. If Porsche is going to launch an EV, it makes sense to have ready a vehicle that fits where the market is.
“This signifies that the Porsche Mission E sedan is not the end in terms of pure EVs for Porsche,” says Joe Lawrence, COO of Porsche North America. “It is clear that the U.S. market is trending toward crossovers, so though the sedan is the only one we’ve confirmed, we recognize that Americans want the utility and function of a SUV.”
The larger question is what this means for the Porsche brand. Porsche has offered one of the broadest varieties of plug-in hybrid vehicles of any manufacturer, including a supercar (918), an SUV (Cayenne) and an executive sport sedan (Panamera). But it has shied away from electrifying any of its core sports cars, and has outright given up on previous plans to insert batteries into foundational vehicles such as the 911.
“There are no plans now for electrifying the 911, but that doesn’t mean that one day we might or might not,” says Lawrence.
Because such vehicles also generally imply the utilization of shared mobility or high-level driver assistance technologies, manufacturers such as Volvo (Polestar), BMW (i) or Mercedes-Benz (EQ) have experimented with spinning off their electric vehicles into separate sub-brands, seemingly to protect the ur-brand from impingement or dilution. Porsche seems to have considered this tactic and decided on integration.
“We are big believers that pure electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids can be real Porsche cars like those with an internal-combustion engine,” says Lawrence. “They can achieve incredible performance and dynamism, so it does fit very well with what Porsches are about. So there is no need to differentiate with a separate sub-brand.”
Porsche has also said that it is committed to assisting with the charging infrastructure required to make electric vehicles viable. It plans an 800-volt, super-fast charging setup, one that the brand claims will allow a 250-mile charge in about 20 minutes. It has already announced plans to install these chargers at all of the locations that make up its U.S. dealer network. But for the initiative to be a success, it needs to exist at more than 189 locations nationally.
“Our studies show that 80 percent of charging happens at home, and an additional percentage at work,” Lawrence says. “Nevertheless, a nationwide infrastructure is important for further EV adoption. Fortunately, there are private companies supporting that. We are going to look at some convenience or destination charging at sites like high-end hotels, resorts and shopping centers where we might brand some charging ports as well. But other than the dealers and that — and our two experience centers in Atlanta and L.A. — we have no plans for further infrastructure rollouts.”

https://briefnews.eu/gran-turismo-sport-update-adds-even-more-free-cars-events-track-layouts/#respondWed, 28 Feb 2018 23:27:29 +0000http://briefnews.eu/gran-turismo-sport-update-adds-even-more-free-cars-events-track-layouts/
Since its launch, Gran Turismo Sport has only been getting better. A previous update addressed some of our key complaints by adding more single-player activities, and leaving more modes unlocked when the servers are down or the internet is out. More cars were also added, all for free. That trend isn’t stopping either, as the newest update (1.13 if you’re curious) adds 12 more cars, two new track layouts and more single-player events.
The selection of new cars is quite good, too. Fans of classics will be pleased to see the 1971 Mustang Mach 1, the 1970 Dodge Challenger and the classic Alpine A110. And for the first time in Gran Turismo, the De Tomaso Pantera, an Italian-style supercar with Ford V8 power, makes an appearance. Toyota gets more road cars in the form of a second-generation turbo MR-2, and a third-generation turbo Supra. New cars include the Lamborghini Aventador, the original V8-powered Audi R8 and the new Alpine A110. There’s an old-style open wheel race car and Subaru’s Isle of Man TT STI race car, the one with 550 horsepower, too.
The update adds a new series of events to complete in single player. Each one is themed around American cars, super cars, or the new open-wheel race car. Several pre-existing race series get additional events, too. Also, Blue Moon Bay Speedway gets two new infield courses available for racing in forward and reverse configurations.

If a racing video game doesn’t have enough cars in it to appeal to enthusiasts of, say, turbo PT Cruisers, Ladas, and obscure versions of the Honda Jazz, most gamers aren’t going to bother even firing it up. Luckily for those looking for more four-wheeled variety, update 1.11 for Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation 4 launched worldwide last week and brought more cars (admittedly not a massive amount, but, hey, we’ll take it), more events for the recently added single-player GT League mode, and two new racing circuits.
–
New Cars
–
Dodge now has nine options in their showroom with this addition of the 448-hp 2002 Dodge Viper GTS, available in six colors. It’s in the N500 car category, along with the Group 3 Mustang, the Ferrari F40, and others. Ferrari fans get two more options: The 1976 Ferrari 512 BB is a beautifully detailed version of the mid-engine Berlinetta Boxer, complete with functioning radiator cooling fans; the other, a 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 race car, is one of the most expensive cars in the game at 20 million credits. Yes, this is the same model that debuted at the 1967 Rolex 24-hour race with not only a victory, but with two other Ferrari 330 P4s finishing 2nd and 3rd.
–
–
The 2006 Ford GT is here and is available in a handful of different colors with optional racing stripes, but we already know most players are going to head straight to the Livery Editor to re-create the classic Gulf look. The 1966 XJ13, not to be confused with an E-type, is just Jaguar’s fourth model in the game. Lamborghini’s roster adds the 2000 Lamborghini Diablo GT—which Lambo made just 80 of—in Giallo Corona paint. It’s a welcome addition to the N600 car category, and the second most expensive in its class at 300,000 credits. Elon Musk once owned a McLaren F1, and now you can, too, as that icon can now be driven in GT Sport.
–
Toyota’s showroom receives three new cars, each in different categories. The 1967 Toyota 2000GT sits in the slower N200 category. The detail in the woodgrain interior trim is fantastic, as are its big, pop-up headlamps and functional fender mirrors. The ’97 Supra RZ competes in the faster N300 category alongside the Subaru WRX STI and Audi TTS. Finally, 2014’s Toyota FT-1 concept has been added with, Gran Turismo points out, specifications that are “a fictitious set created especially for Gran Turismo.” Many of the specs are vague, but in-game the FT-1 makes 486 hp at 7,000 rpm with 425.2 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. You know what, we say make it faster Toyota!
–
–
Gran Turismo maker Polyphony Digital announced earlier this year that it plans 50 additional cars by March 2018. We say so far so good, but it does feel like the cars being added aren’t really anything new. The all-new Ford GT, for example, would be welcome, and the car choices almost make Gran Turismo Sport feel as if it’s aging too fast.
–
New Courses
–
Two Italian courses make their debut, one being the historic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, home of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. Monza is one of the oldest tracks still used today and demands precise timing of every input, especially when racing the layout with chicanes. It’s also been added as a new location in the Scapes photo mode. The second course is a fictional circuit called Autodrome Lago Maggiore that has six different layouts. It’s no Nürburgring in terms of length, but the challenging high-speed banking can be combined with tricky esses on certain layouts and will certainly keep you alert.
–
GT League Events
–
Campaign mode will feel familiar to those who played older GT games and features single-player events, computer opponents, and ranges of difficulty. New events in each of the four leagues are available. Leagues are split based on earned in-game experience: Beginner, Amateur, Professional, and Endurance.
–
–
Beginner League adds Raptor Survival, a three-race series that pits Ford F-150 SVT Raptors against each other. One of the courses featured in this series is a jump-dotted dirt track in Colorado Springs that’s pretty rad. Amateur League now has a Japanese-car-only series in the new J-Sports Meeting event. The first race of the three-race series is in Italy for some reason, but the others take place on the classic Tokyo Expressway and Suzuka Circuit. This is a great place for a trial run of any of the new Japanese cars from this update. La Festa Cavallino is new to the Professional League; it’s a three-race event for Ferraris held on the two new circuits as well as the Nürburgring Grand Prix course. The Endurance League gains a 30-lap race for Group 3 class cars at Monza. Players face 19 computer opponents in this trial, with tire wear and fuel consumption turned up to force you to consider pit strategy during the race.
Among the more under-appreciated parts of Gran Turismo Sport are its various manufacturer museums where you can dive deep on the history of not only the individual automakers but also relevant inventions and discoveries from science, music, computers, and literature. The Daihatsu Museum is new in this update, and we now know all about its creation of the first domestic suction gas engine in 1907.

Polyphony Digital claims that overall stability during online races has improved as well as updates to handling for cars with Dirt or Drift available in their settings. There also are the usual resolution of various glitches and bugs in the menus and during races. The days of sliding into the pits during a reverse spin to get a lap ahead of everyone during the race are over, and in a separate announcement Polyphony Digital warns that cheating like this can result in a pretty serious black flag. Gran Turismo Sport remains a work in progress—especially in terms of content—and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s being cooked up for future updates.

Greetings, Arsians! Courtesy of our friends at TechBargains, we have another round of deals to share. Today’s list includes a good range of discounts, including a bundle that includes a PlayStation VR headset, its accompanying PlayStation Camera, and a copy of Gran Turismo Sport for $ 199. You’re technically getting the first-generation PS VR hardware here, but if you don’t care about having HDR pass-through support, that shouldn’t be a big deal. And while we aren’t crazy about Gran Turismo Sport from a VR-specific standpoint, we do find it to be another enjoyable and superbly realistic racer, albeit one that’s almost totally focused on online play. Maybe just pick up Resident Evil 7to go with the headset, though.
There’s plenty more beyond that, so have a look at the full roundup below.

We have rooted for the return of the station wagon in the United States despite the body style’s limited success here in recent decades. While wagons remain popular in Europe, American consumers now embrace slightly taller, rugged-looking hatchbacks (i.e., SUVs) that do essentially the same job. (Although this is increasingly becoming the case even abroad.) READ MORE ››
