Matt: If I have any more children, the next one is getting Davinson Sanchez as it’s middle names, absolute beast.

Lee: Not sure how the last few games Sissoko has warranted a place in the team. He is so poor!

Garth: Spurs need to learn to kill games! Should be two or three up and it’ll probably come back to bite them. It’s shocking how often it happens!

BURNLEY 0-1 TOTTENHAM

HT: And that’s the break. Spurs take a one-goal advantage in with them after Harry Kane emphatically converted a penalty won by Dele Alli. Burnley have been their usual resilient selves, but they’ve lacked any kind of spark going forward.

43: These boos for Dele Alli have subsided. No stamina this Burnley lot!

40: Gudmundsson wins a free-kick. This is within shooting range… nope. It’s a dreadful cross that soars over and out of play.

37: Better pressing from Burnley. They’re certainly ending the half stronger. Defour, who looks the most likely source of an equaliser, crosses low but Sanchez clears.

34: That’s a blow for Burnley. Chris Wood has limped off with what looks to be a hamstring injury. Ashley Barnes replaces him.

31: Burnley have their first meaningful attack of the evening. Aurier gives it away and Defour drives forward before seeing his cross collected by Lloris. Wood stays down…

28: Another chance for the visitors, Eriksen picks out Kane who fires well over from just outside the area.

26: Burnley are in danger of feeling sorry for themselves, and it’s not helpful. The players, manager and fans are moaning about every decision! Focus on the match, lads!

23: Corner to Burnley. They have to capitalise on these chances, but the cross is too deep and Son is able to break.

And what a break it is!

Sissoko is sent clean through one-on-one with Pope, but his effort is tame and the goalkeeper makes a double save to deny the Frenchman. I think it’s fair to say that Sissoko is NOT a natural finisher…

20: Spurs continue to press with Son claiming a penalty after his shot struck Bardsley, but referee Michael Oliver isn’t interested.

Harry Kane comes close again as he gets to the ball before Pope and takes it round him before finding the side-netting from a tight angle.

19: Gareth Southgate living the playboy lifestyle today folks. He’s ‘jet-setted’ from Goodison Park to Turf Moor. Talk about fancy…

16: Johann Berg Gudmundsson, whose name I will spell in full just once tonight, reaches the byline but can’t find a team-mate with his cutback.

13: Spurs have gone from strength-to-strength here at Turf Moor. They look more confident and clinical than they have done in recent weeks.

10: Dele Alli is very much the pantomime villain of the evening now. Burnley fans don’t think he should be on the pitch, and they certainly don’t think it was a penalty.

BURNLEY 0-1 TOTTENHAM – KANE (PEN)

8: No messing around from Harry Kane, who sets the ball down and sends Pope the wrong way with a well-struck penalty. Advantage Spurs.

PENALTY TO TOTTENHAM

7: Referee Michael Oliver has no hesitations in pointing towards the spot as Long makes a clumsy challenge on Dele Alli.

6: Shank! Son and Davies play a neat one-two but the overlapping full-back skies it.

6: Should Dele Alli be off? Possibly. The midfielder overruns the ball and flies into Taylor to win back possession. Could have gone either way.

3: John Harrison is co-commentating this evening folks, which is a real treat for me. He’s opened by reeling out every fact ever about these two sides. Nothing much happened yet.

BURNLEY 0-0 TOTTENHAM

1: That cracking Arcade Fire song, ‘Wake Up’ has been played and we’re underway folks. Whoever picked that tune deserves a sincere pat on the back!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BURNLEY

17:28: Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t think it’s a preposterous idea!

Sean Dyche’s over-achieving Clarets are point and a place better off than Spurs following their surprisingly strong first half of the season.

And while Pochettino accepts Burnley are outsiders for a place in Europe’s premier club competition, he feels anything is possible in football.

“Of course,” replied the Argentinian coach when asked if the Clarets could secure a top-four finish.

“Look, two years ago, Leicester can win the Premier League and, in the end, they won the Premier League. In football, all can happen. And of course they are doing so well. It will be tough because they are competing with big sides and so are we, but in football, all can happen.”

I SPY…

17:23: I’m just watching Spurs going through their warm-up routine. There’s lots of one-touch passing and movement around the penalty area. Not hard to guess why…

WILL WE SEE THE REAL SPURS?

17:20: Having entered the season among the likeliest title contenders, things have gone badly off script for Tottenham since the high of beating Real Madrid in the Champions League.

A 4-1 defeat by City last time out spoke both of the gulf that currently exists between the pace-setters and the chasing pack and Mauricio Pochettino will have been stung by the thrashing.

Their opponents, Burnley, are a point and a place above Spurs going into the match and a tricky afternoon at Turf Moor should be a good test of how resilient the visitors really are.

EVENING

17:10: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Burnley vs Tottenham.

Tonight we’ll be watching a quality, free-flowing, top-six side against Tottenham at Turf Moor.

Corny? Yes. But terrible jokes aside, we should be basking in the magnificent job that Sean Dyche has done with the Clarets.

Can Spurs, who’re currently 24 points behind leaders Manchester City, return to form and spoil the party?

Let’s find out!

BURNLEY vs TOTTENHAM – PREVIEW

Burnley are without James Tarkowski for their Turf Moor clash with Tottenham after the defender was banned for three games for violent conduct.

Kevin Long will step back in to deputise for Tarkowski, while both Dean Marney and Jonathan Walters are close to returning to the squad after knee injuries.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton continues to make good progress from his shoulder injury but is not expected to feature over the festive period.

Tottenham will have defender Davinson Sanchez back from suspension.

Colombia centre-back Sanchez has completed a three-game ban following his red card at Watford at the start of the month and could go straight back into Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI due to the continued absence of fellow defender Toby Alderweireld (hamstring).

Defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama (knee), who has been sidelined for more than four months, has returned to training but will not be available at Turf Moor.

US travel warning for Cancun & Mexican vacation spots cites gang-related ‘turf battles’ https://briefnews.eu/us-travel-warning-for-cancun-mexican-vacation-spots-cites-gang-related-turf-battles/ https://briefnews.eu/us-travel-warning-for-cancun-mexican-vacation-spots-cites-gang-related-turf-battles/#respond Wed, 23 Aug 2017 03:52:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-travel-warning-for-cancun-mexican-vacation-spots-cites-gang-related-turf-battles/ Popular Mexican vacation hot spots for Americans may not be safe to visit, the US is warning American travelers. The warning targets two Mexican states that are rife with gang violence, and includes Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.

The warning issued on Tuesday upgraded information in the two states. Quintana Roo, which was previously only targeted in a December report for lack of internet and cell phone service in some areas, and Baja California Sur, citing increased homicide rates from this time last year, according to the US State Department Travel Warning.

Quintana Roo has had 169 murders this year. The department states that turf wars between gangs are the reason for an uptick in violence, Bloomberg Politics reported.

The warning also states that US citizens should “defer non-essential travel” to certain areas in Mexico because US government personnel and their families are prohibited from traveling to the areas outlined in the warning. As a result of this, personnel response times in an emergency may be “hampered or delayed.”

The expanded travel warning may hurt these areas, which pull in $ 20 billion a year for Mexico. Quintana Roo houses the resorts of Tulum and Cozumel, which attract 10 million tourists a year. This amounts to one-third of the national total for tourists.

“Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred” in both areas, the US warned, according to the State Department document. “While most of these homicides appeared to be targeted criminal organization assassinations, turf battles between criminal groups have resulted in violent crime in areas frequented by US citizens.”

Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry responded to the warning quickly, saying in a statement that the state is “safe and protected” and the government will continue to collaborate with US and federal officials regarding security, according to Bloomberg.

Coparmex is a business group that represents more than 200 hotels, restaurants and other companies in Cancun. The business says the warning will affect bookings in the winter when Americans head to the beaches to stave off the cold weather.

The head of Coparmex in Cancun, Adrian Lopez Sanchez, says that security is beginning to improve right now after declining earlier this year and last year.

Occupancy at hotels in Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and surrounding resorts rose to 78.6 percent in the year through July. That is an increase from the 75.1 percent in the period a year earlier, according to STR, which provides data and analytics on the lodging industry, Bloomberg reported.

“Tourism is very sensitive,” Sanchez said, according to Bloomberg. “Warnings directed toward the US market are significant.”

Tourism officials in Riviera Maya, a 140-mile-long area of the Caribbean coastline, which includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, have already been on the defensive this year regarding vacation advisories, following the death of a 20-year-old Wisconsin woman named Abbey Connor.

Connor allegedly consumed tainted alcohol at a resort in the area and later died, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The State Department issued a report after that incident advising US citizens to drink alcohol in moderation and seek help if they begin to feel ill, CNN reported.

The Great Golf Debate: To Turf or Not to Turf? https://briefnews.eu/the-great-golf-debate-to-turf-or-not-to-turf/ https://briefnews.eu/the-great-golf-debate-to-turf-or-not-to-turf/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2017 17:47:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-great-golf-debate-to-turf-or-not-to-turf/ With its immaculate fairways and majestic views of the ocean and outlying islands, the Reef Palms Resort’s 18-hole golf course along the coastline of Queensland, Australia, is tough to beat. The 100 sprawling acres of lush greenery amid towering palm trees contain another rare feature: They are 100 percent synthetic — or artificial — turf.

In a region with frequent droughts and salty soil, it seems like a no-brainer to think outside the bunker and try something new. But it’s not just in places like Queensland that golf course owners and developers are facing pressure to reduce their environmental impact and rein in the increasingly onerous costs of maintaining 100-plus acres of natural lawn. Why don’t they do themselves, and the planet, a favor and move toward a more sustainable solution? Why shouldn’t golf go faux?

Today’s synthetic turf … is not your grandfather’s rock-hard AstroTurf.

Consider this: According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, there are over 2.2 million acres of golf courses in the United States alone — roughly the size of the state of Delaware — of which about 1.5 million acres are natural, high-maintenance turf. Audubon International estimates the average U.S. course uses more than 300,000 gallons of water per day, and closer to 1 million per day for desert courses — about the same volume of water the average U.S. family uses over a decade. “Golf courses are intensively managed landscapes, which, in addition to the large amount of water,” says Cristina Milesi, a former environmental scientist at NASA and director of the Evalstat Research Institute, “use a lot of pesticides and fertilizer, which are often washed out in the streams, threatening to adversely impact the local ecosystem.”

Add to this environmental impact the fact that the areas where golf is expanding most rapidly are generally hot and dry, like the American Southwest, making it expensive and energy intensive to grow fine turf grasses — and the incentives to move beyond natural turf accumulate further. And today’s synthetic turf (usually made of some combination of polypropylene, polyethylene and nylon) is not your grandfather’s rock-hard AstroTurf. Many practice facilities already use synthetic surfaces, and some professional golfers use synthetic greens to practice at home. Synthetic turf also allows for more consistent performance in locales with less friendly year-round climates — courses in places like Luxembourg and Alaska have already used synthetic surfaces for tee boxes and greens.

Golf water

To be sure, synthetic golf courses are not without their own problems. Although maintenance costs can be a fraction of natural turf courses, building a new course, or converting an existing one, ain’t cheap. Nor are temperatures on the turf particularly cool on a midsummer afternoon. Synthetic turf does not hold rain or surface water like natural grass, or help prevent soil erosion. In recent years, as Milesi points out, many golf courses have also taken steps to become more sustainable, from using recycled water to drought-resistant turf to improved fertilizers.

The biggest obstacle to a turf takeover may well be convincing golfers that synthetic surfaces can provide a playing (and aesthetic) experience akin to what they’re accustomed to. But the advent of turf in other sports, like football, baseball and soccer, was greeted with a similar reluctance, and was eventually overcome. And, let’s face it, it’s not like the well-manicured, heavily engineered lawns on a golf course are all that “natural” anyway.

Synthetic golf courses like Reef Palms may never fully replace grass ones, but as costs and environmental concerns with existing courses mount, and the industry looks to expand into new locations and climates, more courses should consider the real benefits of going fake.

AUSTIN—Today, AMD unveiled the first generation of Epyc, its new range of server processors built around its Zen architecture. Processors will range from the Epyc 7251—an eight-core, 16-thread chip running at 2.1 to 2.9GHz in a 120W power envelope—up to the Epyc 7601: a 32-core, 64-thread monster running at 2.2 to 3.2GHz, with a 180W design power.

AMD initially revealed its server chips, codenamed “Naples,” earlier this year. Since then, we’ve known the basics of the new chips: they’ll have 128 PCIe lanes and eight DDR4 memory controllers and will support one or two socket configurations. With today’s announcement, we now know much more about how the processors are put together and what features they’ll offer.

When it comes to PC gaming, most of the world thinks of Steam first. It’s the biggest store and community for PC games, so much so that it’s almost a platform onto itself.

But in China, where PC gaming is a growing market (analyst firm Newzoo pegged it at $ 13.8 billion in 2016), Steam is a runner-up. China belongs to Tencent, the biggest game company in the world. You might know it as the owners of Riot Games, the folks who make the fantastically successful League of Legends.

And don’t count on Steam overtaking Tencent. Motherboard, Vice Media’s tech site, breaks down why each will keep their existing strangleholds on their home turfs. But this shows that while mobile is a booming market for gaming, the PC platform is still growing worldwide thanks to the ease of distribution (you don’t have to deal with Apple or Sony for certification) and the variety of experiences — and experimentation — a mouse-and-keyboard provide for.

And it also shows that China — one of the biggest markets in the world — is opening up to Western design studios. It’s probably a good time to brush up on your Mandarin, or do what folks in mobile have learned: find a partner like Tencent that’s interested in publishing your game there.

P.S. Tired of modern first-person shooters? Strafe might be for you.

Britons turf out the lawn and replace it with plastic grass https://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/ https://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 08:38:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/britons-turf-out-the-lawn-and-replace-it-with-plastic-grass/

For the latest research shows that a desire for low maintenance gardens has seen a surge in the laying of synthetic turf along with building larger patios and putting down concrete and tarmac.

Industry figures show that out of the 86per cent of homes in the UK with gardens, as many as three in four have removed part of the original lawn as Britons develop a taste for al fresco living and demand a larger outdoor entertaining space.

The study highlights the fact that today’s garden trends increasingly flout the image of England’s green and pleasant land as described by poet William Blake.

Catalogue and online store Studio.co.uk carried out a survey among its customers after finding that people were spending more on accessories and furniture for patios than they were on plants and other gardening products.

Eight out of ten of home owners admitted to revamping their outdoor space in the past five years.

This trend to make more use of our open air environment, has resulted in a dramatic rise in demand for garden furniture, sun loungers, parasols, barbecues, gazebos, ornaments and chimineas according to the low priced retailer.

Seventy-three per cent said they owned rattan style furniture or loungers, 57 per cent had barbecues, 12 per cent tables with canopies while a third (34 per cent) have some form of outdoor lighting.

The report found that neighbourly get-togethers on the patio have soared at the expense of the formal dinner party. Almost nine in ten adults said they preferred entertaining guests outdoors rather than a more formal sit down meal around a dining table.

Almost half (46 per cent) of those surveyed said they would cook on the barbecue during summer months at least once a week or one in five (21 per cent) said weather permitting they would regularly eat meals outside.

Paul Kendrick, a spokesman for Studio.co.uk said: “I don’t know what William Blake who wrote those famous words would think but today more and more people are looking to create that extra room where they can eat and drink in the open air and relax in the sun as they seek to take advantage of a Mediterranean lifestyle and spend more time outdoors.

“There has been a definite change in how we use the space surrounding outside our homes.

Once the garden plants and lawn were our pride and joy, but now home owners prefer to pave over areas, lay down artificial turn or install decking as they seek to have that comfortable low maintenance living and seating area in the open air.

We can see from purchases this reflects a desire for a continental style of living.

Chelsea and England’s John Terry is one of those who has opted to replace his grass lawns and is reported to have spent £150,000 on artificial turf. Ruby Wax is another who prefers the appeal of the artificial grass while Tory MP Michael Gove is also a fan.

Tottenham kept the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Bournemouth at White Hart Lane, which reduced the gap at the top of the Premier League between the club to just four points.

But Spurs have stumbled against Chelsea too often in recent seasons, dropping two points at Stamford Bridge to hand Leicester the title last season and losing at Wembley in the 2015 League Cup final to their London rivals.

But Pochettino believes Tottenham are answering Chelsea in the right way by building gradually, bringing home grown stars like Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Harry Winks through and not relying totally on big-money buys funded by a billionaire owner.

“Our answer has been fantastic,” he said. “If you analyse where we came from, it’s a fantastic time for Tottenham. And how you build your project is important to analyse.

“Tottenham is not building now in an artificial way. It is not about putting in money, money, money, money and building a fantastic stadium and fantastic team.

“Tottenham is very genuine. It is a very natural process and it is so exciting because it is unique in the world.”

Chelsea spent £120 million players last summer, while Spurs splashed out only £48m.

3 bodies thrown out of plane in suspected Mexican cartel turf war https://briefnews.eu/3-bodies-thrown-out-of-plane-in-suspected-mexican-cartel-turf-war/ https://briefnews.eu/3-bodies-thrown-out-of-plane-in-suspected-mexican-cartel-turf-war/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2017 02:40:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3-bodies-thrown-out-of-plane-in-suspected-mexican-cartel-turf-war/

At least three people have been thrown out from a plane allegedly belonging to Mexico’s infamous Sinaloa drug cartel, once run by Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, local media reported. One of the bodies landed on the roof of a hospital.

According to local police, the bodies were dumped at dawn on Wednesday morning from a single engine plane in the Sinaloa State of Mexico. One of the bodies landed on the roof of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) hospital in the town of Eldorado at around 7:30 am. The half-naked man had signs of torture on his body with his head covered with a sack.

Witnesses saw a plane flying at a low altitude from which a person – who may or may not have been alive at the time of the incident – was pushed out onto the hospital’s roof, Reuters reports.

Two more bodies were discovered nearby by local residents in the Arboleadas colony, with witnesses claiming that they too were flung out of the same plane.

Unidentified “armed men” have reportedly taken the two bodies, while the third, which landed on the roof of the hospital, was retrieved by security forces, who are now trying to determine the person’s identity. The identity of the other two victims also remains unknown.

The area over which the tragic incident took place is currently controlled by Damaso Lopez Nunez, also known as “El Licenciado,” a prominent figure of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Sinaloa is one of the most violent states in Mexico. It is the birthplace of the Sinaloa cartel leader, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who has recently been extradited to the US to face a number of criminal charges. Currently, control of drug routes to the United States is disputed between the Sinaloa and the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel (CJNG).

Sinaloa Ministerial Police said in addition to the three bodies thrown out of the plane, security forces discovered another four bodies who were “violently” murdered on Wednesday in the municipalities of Culiacan, Navolato and Mazatlan.

What It Is: A 2019 Ford Ranger test mule spied in action near Ford’s Dearborn headquarters. Despite wearing a black-and-white coating of wavy dots, the sheetmetal is very similar to that of the Ranger currently sold overseas. This is far from shocking, as we’ve long expected that when the Ranger returned to the United States it would be closely related to that vehicle. Yes, there is a small chance that the truck pictured here could just be using the global Ranger’s body for testing and evaluating foreign-market powertrains, but some visual cues point to American aspirations: The test mule’s twin-bar grille looks to be a downsized version of the unit found on the refreshed-for-2018 Ford F-150, and the same can be said of the taillights—indications that the finished product we’ll soon get won’t stray far from the truck seen here.
