Lung cancer affects about 44,500 people every year in the UK.

It’s most commonly caused by smoking. Cigarettes are responsible for more than 85 per cent of all lung cancer cases.

But how do you know if you’re at risk of the disease?

Lung cancer symptoms are difficult to spot in its earlier stages.

As the tumour progresses, it could lead to some tell-tale signs of the disease.

“Many people with lung cancer have no symptoms at first,” said Bupa.

“But the most common symptom is a cough, especially one that doesn’t go away or gets worse.

“Many symptoms of lung cancer, such as a cough, can also be symptoms of other much less serious conditions, such as asthma.

“But if you’ve had symptoms such as a cough or feeling very tired for longer than three weeks, contact your GP surgery for advice.

“Some of the more serious symptoms should be checked by a GP sooner rather than waiting three weeks.”

The more serious signs of lung cancer include shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood, added Bupa.

Other symptoms are frequent chest infections, unexplained weight loss, or feeling very tired.

Less common lung cancer symptoms include a swollen face, a hoarse voice, or a thickening of the fingertips.

Older people are more likely to be affected by lung cancer, said the NHS.

It’s rare in anyone under 40 years old, and is most common in people aged 70 to 74.

Seeing as lung cancer signs don’t tend to appear until after the cancer has spread into other parts of the body, the outlook isn’t as good as some other cancers.

Around one in three people survive the cancer for at least a year after their initial diagnosis.

Five per cent of patients survive for at least 10 years.

The best way to prevent lung cancer is to stop smoking, if you’re a smoker.

Eating a low-fat, high-fibre diet could lower the risk of lung cancer, while everyone should aim to do at least 150 minutes of exercise every week, added the NHS.

He did not name the exact type of cancer but said his recovery is taking longer than he had hoped.

London-born Costello, son of a singer and musician with the highly successful 1940s Joe Loss Orchestra, said that at first his recovery had gone remarkably well but the strains of touring had proved too much.

He explained: “Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said he had rarely, if ever, seen such very aggressive cancerous malignancy defeated by a single surgery.

I was elated and relieved that our European summer tour could go ahead.”

But he added: “Post-surgical guidelines recommend three weeks to four weeks recovery depending on whether you are returning to a desk job or an occupation that involves physical work or travel.”

He said: “It was impossible to judge how this advisory would line up with the demands on a travelling musician, playing 90-minute to twohour-plus performances on a nightly basis.

By the time we reached the Edinburgh Playhouse, I was almost fooled into thinking that normal service had been resumed.

“I have to now accept that it is going to take longer.” The singer, whose hits include Oliver’s Army, She and Pump It Up, said: “My apologies go to our ticket holders but I would rather disappoint our friends by not appearing than press on with a show that puts my health.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers to be diagnosed in women, according to the NHS.

The condition affects the ovaries; a pair of small organs that store a woman’s supply of eggs.

Ovarian cancer symptoms include a swollen tummy, passing urine more often than normal, and feeling full quickly after eating.

Those most at-risk of ovarian cancer are women that have gone through the menopause, but it can also affect younger women.

A new treatment has been approved today (June 1) for use in England, and it’s been hailed as “game-changing”.

Niraparib – the new treatment – has been approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) today.

The drug aims to stop cancer cells from repairing themselves; essentially crippling them.

It’s the first time a breakthrough drug has been made available to women with recurrent ovarian cancer on a mass scale.

Niraparib could help women with ovarian cancer, that have limited treatment options, live well for longer, it’s been claimed.

“Today’s announcement is a gamechanger in ovarian cancer,” said charity Target Ovarian Cancer’s Director of Public Affairs and Services, Rebecca Rennison.

“While we have seen some new treatments in recent years, these have been for highly restricted groups.

“With niraparib, we’re taking the fight to ovarian cancer. We know that with the right investment in new treatments, more women can and will survive this disease.

“Today is a critical first step in making that a reality.”

Ovarian cancer patient Vanessa, 59, was diagnosed with the condition in 2013.

It subsequently spread to her small bowel, liver and colon, and she underwent several rounds of chemotherapy.

Vanessa started taking niraparib in November 2017, as part of a clinical study.

She takes just two tablets a day, and her tumours have since halved in size. Her cancer is now in remission.

“Having access to this medicine has opened a door and given me my life back,” she said.

“I feel like I how I did before I was diagnosed and am now able to play with my grandchildren and make plans for the future.”

The earlier it’s diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of a cure, the NHS said.

Throat cancer can include many different parts of the throat, including the oropharynx, hypopharynx, and the nasopharynx, according to the NHS.

The cancer is a type of head and neck cancer. About 10,000 new cases are diagnosed in the UK every year.

Symptoms of throat cancer can include difficulty swallowing, a cough, or a sore throat.

A change to your voice – a hoarseness or an inability to speak properly – could also be a sign of the cancer.

But, Paul Simpson, 56, was diagnosed with throat cancer after he had a pain in his ear.

Simpson was diagnosed with the cancer two years ago, and his treatment is still ongoing.

He went to see a GP for ear pain, but was later told he had throat cancer, leaving him “in utter shock”.

“I’d had a little discomfort in my ear, so went to see my doctor who initially thought it was probably an infection,” he said.

“But it didn’t clear up and after further investigations I was told it was throat cancer.

“I was completely devastated and felt my world was falling apart.”

While he’s finished his chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he still has a lot of side-effects.

“It’s a long hard road to recovery emotionally and physically,” said Simpson. “I still have a lot of side effects, like having a very dry mouth when eating sometimes and getting cuts on my tongue.”

Simpson’s family and friends helped to push him out of his darkest days, he said.

“Some days are harder than others. Hopefully things are moving in the right direct and my family are so supportive.”

After training as a Macmillan Neighbour, he’s helping others in a volunteer role, by giving his colleagues advice about where they can find support.

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched its ‘Just Say the Word’ campaign, to encourage men with cancer to seek help.

Many men find it difficult to talk, the charity said. Macmillan was half as likely to receive a phone call from a man than a woman last year, it revealed.

That’s despite men being 22 per cent more likely to develop cancer.

Talking is an important part of coping with cancer, it said.
