Lorraine, an NHS nurse in London told ITV Good Morning Britain she was told by her manager to share facemasks and other protective equipment with her colleagues as they face a “tsunami” of coronavirus patients. She denounced the Government’s failure to provide NHS staff with protective equipment four months ago when they first learned about coronavirus. She described her day-to-day- life as going into a “war zone”. 

Doctors will be forced to leave the profession during the coronavirus pandemic due to a lack of protective equipment, the head of a medics group has warned.

Amid fears over NHS staff shortages, the head of the Doctors’ Association UK said existing staff may feel forced to leave because they do not have adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to safely treat Covid-19 patients.

Chairman Dr Rinesh Parmar gave the warning as the Government urges recruitment of medical staff, including asking those who have recently left to return to help cope with the pandemic.

He told The Guardian: “The longer this epidemic goes on for, if doctors feel that there is a widespread lack of personal protective equipment, then some doctors may feel they have no choice but to give up the profession they love because they feel so abandoned by not being given the PPE that the World Health Organisation recommends.

Dr Parmar’s comments come after Matt Hancock promised a “military effort” to get equipment to health and social care workers.

On Tuesday, the Health and Social Care Secretary announced that a new hotline had been set up that staff can call if they are running low on supplies.

He said that 7.5 million pieces of protective equipment, including face masks, had been shipped out to frontline workers in the past day.

During the daily Downing Street briefing on coronavirus, Mr Hancock said: “Many, many people across the NHS are asking for more personal protective equipment (PPE).

“If people are working on the frontline to look after us, it is vital that we look after them.”

JAKARTA (Reuters) – A tsunami killed at least 43 people on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra and injured hundreds following an underwater landslide caused by a volcanic eruption, the disaster mitigation agency said on Sunday.

Some 584 people were injured and hundreds of homes and other buildings were “heavily damaged” in the tsunami which struck late on Saturday.

At least 20 people have been killed as a tidal wave hit beaches around Sunda Strait in Indonesia on Saturday night, according to the country’s Disaster Mitigation Agency. Another 165 have been injured.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said the wave was not caused by an earthquake, but was possibly the result of volcanic activity at Mount Krakatoa.

Video filmed at one of the affected beaches and posted on Twitter shows the wave rolling in as beachgoers scramble away from the water.

Two shallow earthquakes have occurred near the eastern Indonesian island of Sumba, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The temblors Tuesday occurred nearly 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) south of the area heavily damaged by a powerful earthquake and tsunami Friday on central Sulawesi island.

A series of powerful aftershocks, ranging between 5 and 5.9 in magnitude, have rattled Indonesia just days after a deadly earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc across the island of Sulawesi, killing hundreds.

The most powerful 5.9-magnitude quake was recorded at 10.6 km depth some 37 km South of Nggongi, USGS said. The earthquake, which struck at 11:59pm GMT, was preceded by a 5.2 jolt 25 km north of Palu about 15 minutes earlier.

PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) – The toll from an earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia soared to 832 confirmed dead on Sunday, with authorities fearing the numbers will climb as rescuers grappled to get aid to outlying communities cut off from communications and help.

Dozens of people were reported to be trapped in the rubble of several hotels and a mall in the city of Palu, on Sulawesi island, which was hit by waves as high as six meters (20 feet) following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

Indonesia was ravaged by both a tsunami and an earthquake last night in a horrible disaster that has seen at least 384 people killed. So what’s the latest travel advice to the region?

Sulawesi island, Indonesia was struck by a 7.5 magnitude quake 6.02pm local time on Friday. The earthquake triggered a tsunami in the following hour, severely damaging the coastal city of Palu city, home to 350,000 people. Several aftershocks have been felt today.

Thousands of homes and buildings have collapsed and authorities have warned that the current death toll could increase as rescue workers hunt for survivors and 29 people are reported missing. More than 540 are being treated in hospital.

Hundreds of people were gathered for a festival on Palu’s beach at the time when the 497mph wave hit. Indonesia’s disaster agency has said that many people on the beach didn’t immediately run when the threat arose and tragically found themselves victims of tsunami. Many bodies have been found along the shoreline.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have now updated the travel advice to the region.

“Following reports of an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 in Central Sulawesi, the British Embassy in Jakarta is liaising with the Indonesian authorities to establish facts,” the FCO website states.

“You should be aware of the risk of aftershocks. If you are in the area monitor local news and follow the advice of the local authorities.”

The airport in Palu – Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport – has been closed after suffering damages to its navigation system, reported The Jakarta Post. It’s expected to remain shut until Saturday night.

Additionally, 500m of the airport’s 2,500m-long subway has also been damaged by the earthquake, meaning large aircraft are unable to land.

Flights to and from the airport between Makassar and Palu have also been cancelled. 

Airport Duty Manager Elet Sutriyanto said in a statement: “In accordance with the information released by Airnav in the form of NOTAM [Notice to Airmen] of the closure of Sis Al Jufri Airport in Palu, automatically the flights from Makassar to Palu are also cancelled.”

Fortunately, the remaining, undamaged section of the airport’s runway can still be used for Hercules cargo aircraft.

The Indonesian navy has deployed several such logistic planes to bring in technicians, supplies and rescue teams.

The main tremor struck at 6:02 pm local time (12.02pm BST) about 35 miles northeast of Donggala, Indonesia according to the US Geological Survey. 

Soon after, a tsunami warning was issued by Indonesia’s geophysics agency, before being lifted. After the tsunami warning was lifted, a huge wave struck Donggala and Palu, a coastal town of about 330,000 residents.

Footage from the Indonesia island captured the moment the huge wave struck the coast submerging homes and quickly reaching high buildings.

Onlookers can be heard screaming as the water approaches before fleeing away. The screen briefly turns to black before returning to capture footage of the devastated surroundings. 

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency BNPB, described the damage to Palu as “extensive” with thousands of buildings destroyed or washed away.

Authorities trying to carry out rescues have said this morning a massive power outage that cut communications around Palu following the tsunami has hampered their efforts.

International aid charity Humanitarian Relief tweeted: “Nearly 400 people died and scores of people were injured in #Palu city in Sulawesi Island of #Indonesia that hit by a major earthquake and tsunami yesterday.

“There are difficulties in reaching #Donggala city, so there is no reliable information for the casualties.”

Last month, a series of earthquakes struck the Indonesian island of Lombok, killing hundreds. The biggest earthquake struck on August 5, killing more than 460.

While his colleagues ran for their lives as the tower swayed violently from the shocks, Agung, 21, remained steadfast to ensure that Batik Air Flight 6321 got off the ground, as deep fissures and cracks began to appear on the runway.

When the plane took off to safety, further trembling hit the tower. Fearing that he would be trapped beneath the rubble, Agung jumped the four stories off the tower, landing on the ground where he sustained a broken leg and internal injuries.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors decided to send him to a bigger one for better treatment. However, he died before the helicopter transporting him could reach its destination. He was just one month shy of his 22nd birthday.

Tributes to Agung’s bravery were led by Yohannes Sirait, spokesman for Air Navigation Indonesia, who said Agung’s sacrifice had potentially saved the lives of hundreds of people.

“He gave clearance for this flight, and if he left his post before the plane was airborne, hundreds of people inside the plane might be in danger,” he said.

“Unfortunately we lost him this morning before the helicopter reached Palu.”

Hundreds of tributes have since flooded in, with Agung given a hero’s farewell earlier Saturday as soldiers carried his body to be transported to the burial.

In acknowledgement of his bravery and sacrifice, AirNav Indonesia officials raised his rank by two levels saying that he “demonstrated tremendous dedication” in providing flight safety.

At least 384 people have so far been confirmed dead and over 500 people injured as a result of Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.

Palu airport has been damaged to the extent that it has lost at least 500 meters of its 2,500 meter-long runway, but is still operational for rescue aircraft.

A mosque can be seen damaged following the waves that hit it.

The tsunami warning that was issued following the earthquake was downgraded just hours later.

However, according to the Associated Press, an Indonesia’s geophysics agency spokesperson said the tsunami hit just after the warning was lifted.

Hary Tirto Djatmiko confirmed that it was a tsunami to have hit Sulawesi.

Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a TV interview that houses had been swept away.

A number of families were also missing following the strong waves.

Communications are currently down in the area as search and rescue has been deployed.

Residents are being warned that aftershocks could follow.

More than 350,000 people live in Palu, although the extent of the injuries has not yet been established.

The 7.5 earthquake hit Indonesia earlier today, with a depth of six metres underground.

A tsunami warning was given yet this was downgraded just hours later.
